My guest today is Lori Miller! She is a quilter, pattern designer, and national quilt educator from Oxford, Michigan. With a career in IT software for 25 years you can imagine why she enjoys the design process and why one of her favourite tools is EQ8 Quilt Design software. She teaches EQ8 classes around the country and writes Lessons With Lori for the EQ blog. As an Accuquilt GO! Getter, she shares tutorials and patterns of her designs on the Accuquilt blog as well. Today's podcast is a great conversation about how she combines these two products for the perfect mix of precision and creativity. Lori's original quilt designs have been featured in American Patchwork and Quilting, American Quilter, Fons and Porter Love of Quilting, and many other quilt publications Find Lori on Instagram: @lorimillerdesignsFacebook: @lorimillerdesignsGo to her website: www.lorimillerdesigns.comWant to travel with Brandy?2025 FESTIVAL OF QUILTS Birmingham!!! The American Patchwork Quartet is a group that reflects the American melting pot – the patchwork quilt of people who've come and made the U.S.A. their home. APQ features two-time Grammy winner Clay Ross, of the band Ranky Tanky, drummer Clarence Penn, and two musicians who immigrated from Asia: the singer Falu (from India) and bassist Yasushi Nakamura (from Japan). Their debut, untitled album is just out, and includes fresh, often Indian-tinged arrangements of old fiddle tunes, folk hymns, and early blues. As the famed folksong collector and producer Alan Lomax said, “America has a patchwork culture made of the dreams and songs of all its people.” The American Patchwork Quartet performs their take on old folk songs in-studio.  Set list: 1. Wayfaring Stranger 2. Lazy John 3. Shenandoah

Episode 274: Beyond his skills as a guitarist and singer, Clay Ross is what I like to call a Musical Instigator. Since heading to his current base in New York 20 years ago from his home town of Charleston, SC, he's conceived and organized three brilliant groups that bring a new global consciousness to American roots music. First it was Matuto with its infusion of Brazilian melodies and rhythms. Then with old college-era friends from South Carolina he launched Ranky Tanky, a Grammy-winning outfit that reimagines African-American Gullah music for a world stage. His latest project is the American Patchwork Quartet, with members from three continents and a completely original way of updating classic folk songs. We go deep on his background and his approach to making creative space for diverse people to truly collaborate.

Drum roll….it's the first episode of Travel Notes for 2024! I'm so excited about this year's first guest - Clay Ross, a multi-grammy award winning guitarist/vocalist, composer and educator about his group American Patchwork Quartet or APQ. I saw the American Patchwork Quartet perform at the APAP conference in NYC this past January and was absolutely blown away by their live performance and music. This dynamic and virtuosic group binds timeless American folk songs with jazz sophistication, country twang, West African hypnotics, and East Asian ornamentation on their debut self titled album which comes out Friday, February 9th. Throughout the album, we find potent symbols of unity in diversity, exploring universal truths through a range of musical languages and cultural lenses - themes like longing, heartbreak, desire, fulfillment, tranquility and love...ultimately revealing the joys, sorrows, and unwavering hope of a nation crafted by shared dreams and diverse histories.

She even shares a super-easy lesson plan she uses to teach her art students to love sewing. Plus, she shares some ideas for vaccinating your kids against defeat and self-doubt. And how textile art can give your child a sense of belonging and a healthy identity. And she shares how textile art helped her process grief. And she gently edits my definition of mindfulness. Join us for this episode with the lovely Krista Hennebury- prolific quilter and teacher who lives on Bowen Island, BC.  Our conversation gets into how  Krista started quilting, and then how her approach and practice has evolved and expanded to explore sustainability in different ways, such as by using retired clothing in quilts and creating useable objects out of scraps like jeans. We chat about some of the challenges and pressures around how to get out of creative slumps, and understanding creativity and creative practice broadly. About KristaKrista Hennebury is a geologist by training and quilter by choice. She's been quilting since 2000 in her home studio, currently located on Bowen Island, B.C. Her semi-retired blog is poppyprintcreates.blogspot.ca but these days she mostly shares on Instagram as@poppyprint. Passionate about sharing her love of quilting with others and fostering community through stitching together, Krista established a successful day-retreat business in 2005. She is a popular teacher, presenter and certified Aurifilosopher, working with general and modern guilds all across Canada and internationally, including an Alaska cruise,  Australia, Sweden, the U.S., Scotland, England and at Quilt Canada 2019. Since 2020, Krista has taught and lectured at over 90 Zoom events around the world. She describes her work as traditionally-informed modern quilting, using designer prints, solids, linen and retired clothing. Her original patterns have been published in Stitch,  Australian Homespun, Quilters Connection, Simply Moderne and Quilt Now magazines. Krista's had 15 quilts juried into QuiltCon and Quilt Canada since 2014 and won awards at both shows. Her book of retreat-inspired projects Make It, Take It was published by Martingale in 2015 and she's twice been a guest on American Patchwork & Quilting Podcast with Pat Sloan. Krista is delighted that her quilt “Chess on the Steps” appears in Modern Quilts: Designs of the New Century, 2017and her“Blackbird Fly” quilt appears in Thomas Knauer's beautiful book Why We Quilt, 2019.Instagram: PoppyprintFB: Krista HenneburyBlog: poppyprintcreates.blogspot.comEmail: poppyprintcreates@gmail.com Support the showJoin The Green Stitcher's Hive at https://thegreenstitchershive.mn.co/ Follow Bridget O'Flaherty @thesustainablequilter on Instagram and @TheSustainableQuilter on Facebook.
