Getting to know the Brazilian percussion music-making community, one interview at a time with your hosts, Courtney and Dianna
Courtney Danley & Dianna Ramirez
The Brazilian Beat podcast is a true labor of love for music and Brazilian culture. Hosted by Courtney and Diana, the podcast offers in-depth conversations with knowledgeable guests about various aspects of Brazilian music. The hosts' passion and expertise are evident in the well-formulated questions they ask, resulting in engaging and informative content. Listening to this podcast is not only a delight but also an opportunity to learn more about the rich cultural heritage of Brazil. I look forward to seeing Courtney and Diana at CBC (presumably California Brazil Camp) sometime soon!
One of the best aspects of The Brazilian Beat podcast is the hosts' deep knowledge of Brazilian culture and music. They bring on guests who are experts in their respective fields, whether it's samba bateria directors, teachers, musicians, or group leaders from Rio de Janeiro or around the world. This diversity ensures that listeners get a comprehensive understanding of different genres like samba reggae, maracatu, choro, and more. The conversations range from personal stories to practical advice on topics such as group dynamics and recording techniques. It feels like sitting in on a great conversation with Courtney, Diana, and a friend.
While the podcast delivers excellent content overall, one possible drawback is its heavy focus on samba bateria. Although this genre plays a significant role in Brazilian music culture, some listeners may prefer more variety in terms of topics covered. While there have been efforts to diversify with interviews from other genres like samba reggae and maracatu, it would be great to see even more representation from different styles within Brazilian music.
In conclusion, The Brazilian Beat podcast is a must-listen for anyone interested in exploring the vibrant music scene of Brazil. With its well-informed hosts and diverse range of guests, this podcast provides valuable insights into not only the technical aspects but also the cultural nuances surrounding Brazilian music traditions. Whether you're stuck in traffic or simply seeking an immersive experience, The Brazilian Beat podcast is the perfect companion. Don't miss out on the opportunity to learn and be entertained by this fantastic show! Beijos e queijos from your number one fan!
Promotes multicultural dissemination between both countries, Mexico and Brazil, through musical dissemination. Expressing our art through samba school bateria originating in Rio De Janeiro with young Mexicans, incorporating our roots and Mexican culture, taking the concept of Day of the Dead traditions as a way of showing our culture, carrying with great respect this tradition of our ancestors that makes us completely unique, represents and identifies us worldwide.Musically, Groove e Rimshot is a project directed and focused on the reorganization of the batucada concept in our country, taking the bases of a samba school drummer that is currently represented in the largest carnival in the world, in RdJ e SP.Our objective is to influence these Mexico based musical groups (batucadas) in our country with the good technique and rhythmic knowledge that have evolved over the years in Brazil. The primary task of the project is to make known all these musical transformations that continue to emerge so that in turn that they can develop rhythmically and musically to avoid that musical stagnation that has persisted in our country over the years.Links:https://www.facebook.com/share/v/LZw3nCwNQDma6QBR/https://www.facebook.com/share/v/KrVZQMnHYLdzckeB/https://www.facebook.com/share/v/uMXQaBKB7t4xQgVD/

Recorded at São Paulo's prestigious Estúdio Arsis and musically directed by award-winning Brazilian musical artist Fabiana Cozza, this 4-song EP serves as an introduction to Manrique's delicate delivery and unique blend of Latin and Brazilian jazz and contemporary sounds. A bout with breast cancer in 2020 led her to refocus on her artistic career and this EP commemorates her official return to music. “This release is titled ‘Sonho' because it means dream in Portuguese – and this EP is exactly that, the realization of a deep desire to record music not only for pleasure but also for posterity,” said Silvia, who began vocal training with Fabiana Cozza while undergoing chemotherapy as a way to release stress. “Fabiana really encouraged me to stop thinking of singing as a hobby or a pastime – it really is a vocation that I have to nurture every day for the wellbeing of my body and soul.” ‘Sonho' features covers of classic world jazz songs by Rosa Passos, Joyce Moreno, Henri Salvador, as well as a bolero by legendary Cuban composer Frank Dominguez, a nod to Silvia's Latin American (Mexican) heritage. Waguinho started with the kids Bateria of Acadêmicos do Engenho da Rainha and then played in the Famous kids Bateria of Mestre Odilon at Ilha do Governador! Soon after, he joined the Repique Solos team at Engenho da Rainha! But the first time he was the repique soloist in a grupo especial school was at Estácio de Sá, at the invitation of Mestre Ciça. He alone has created 55 Paradinhas! Waguinho is one of the people responsible for the rise of Repique Mor which he learned at Beija flor. He is the creator of the original Naipe and Levada played at Cabula, a school which he also paraded. Waguinho proposed the idea of having repique mor to Mestre Casa Grande for Unidos da Tijuca, Pura Cadência. Casa Grande gave him a lot of freedom to tread a new path for the instrument within the school. Repique Mor generated a lot of prominence because only Tijuca did it at the time, but other baterias were interested. Waguinho after the success of Naipe in Tijuca, implanted Repique MOR in Salgueiro's Bateria. Waguinhow took the drum to an Ensaio once and played it. Mestre Marcão and his board liked it and so Repique Mor was placed in Salgueiro and is still played there, because of his efforts. Waguinho became involved as a percussionist with the social project of the great musician Robertinho Silva. Waguinho played for years as a guest musician on the annual Samba School CD Production and had the honor of playing and sharing theStage with: Simone, Daniela Mercury, Fernanda Abreu, Ana Costa, Beth Carvalho, Iza, Martinho da Vila, Diogo Nogueira, Zeca Pagodinho, Gabriel Moura, Arlindo Cruz. Francisco Machado Bio:Curriculum My name is Francisco Machado and I am a professional and music lover. At 9 years old I had contact with the world of music in social projects for low-income young people. I am very grateful for that! My main instrument is the ganzá, an afro-indigenous rattle widely used in samba and other Brazilian rhythms. I studied blowing (flute, baroque and pife), guitar, singing and percussion. I started my musical training in percussion at Bloco das Carmelitas, in Santa Teresa. I continued my studies in another social project, the Bloco Rio Maracatu, in which I was invited to be the monitor of the workshops and musician of the concert block. Then, I became responsible for the rattle wing of Bloco Picada de Primeira, being invited to conduct and beep at the workshop, in addition to being in charge of the musical direction of the show. Among the works, I highlight the musical direction and conducting of the Funk Carousel of Emotions Block, performing more than 300 shows in all states of Brazil, participating in a tour in Europe and recording their DVD of the block, in Rio de Janeiro. I also highlight the performance as a percussionist in the band of the great Mestre Naná Vasconcellos, at the Festival Black2Black. I was invited to be a teacher of ganzá at the Maracatu Brasil Music School and I offer my classes as an experience through the Airbnb platform. In 2018, I created the Ganzanzá instrument (transparent ganzá) and the brand ChicoChocalho, selling in 2019, more than 100 rattles all over the world. In April 2019, I completed 20 years of musical studies. To celebrate, I realized a child's dream of having my own block for studying percussion. And thus NossoBloco was born, which aims to study, research and value Brazilian percussion, with a methodology adapted to each type of student and with more accessible values. In November 2019, with the objective of valuing the rattle and Brazilian percussion, I launched the Repercussion Project, teaching the Rhythm and Rattle Workshops in different states of Brazil, taking and sharing their knowledge with other musicians, percussionists and rhythm players. I am currently a musician and musical director of several carnival blocks in Rio and rhythmist of the samba schools Acadêmicos do Sossego, Unidos de Vila Isabel and Acadêmicos da Grande Rio.Links:Instagram and Facebook @chicochocalho @nossoblocooficial @cochi22 (perfil pessoal) E-mail: chicochocalho@yahoo.com Lessons and group classes (online) WhatsApp +55 21998864120 Chocalhou orders: +55 21981969825CurrículoMe chamo Francisco Machado e sou um profissional e amante da música.
