The Miami Dolphins led 27-14 with less than three minutes on Monday Night before the Tenessee Titans completed one of the more shocking comebacks of the 2023 NFL season. Coach Mike McDaniel and the Dolphins were stunned as Will Levis and the Titans needed just 13 plays — and a two-point conversion — to score 15 points and escape South Florida with a 28-27 win. Concerns and injuries are mounting with just one month remaining in the regular season — can McDaniel and the 2023 Miami Dolphins learn from last year's mistakes? The Miami Dolphins have started eight offensive line combinations this year and yet rank third in the NFL with an average of 1.5 sacks allowed per game this season. Considering injuries to Teron Armstead, Robert Hunt, Isaiah Wyan, and Connor Williams — four of the team's five starting offensive linemen — the unit's sustained success is hard to ignore. Miami's offensive line didn't just struggle in past years, it was one of the league's worst units. Coach Mike McDaniel, offensive coordinator Frank Smith, and offensive line coach Butch Barry wasted little time turning things around. From top-to-bottom, Miami's offensive line has held through 12 games. It was apparent that Miami had top-end talent entering the season, but unexpected stars are pushing this team toward the top of the playoff race. Defense coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Kansas City's defense held quarterback Tua Tagovailoa under 200 passing yards in Sunday's 21-14 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The offense was scoreless in three of four quarters and a Tyreek Hill fumble — it was a harsh Week 9 showing for the unit. The slightest adjustments can make a difference in professional sports and potentially sway the outcome of games. Coach Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins decided it was best to leave for Germany on Monday for Sunday's AFC battle with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Dolphins will practice in Germany three times ahead of Sunday's game. That said, Kansas City has decided to take the tunnel vision approach — traveling overseas on Thursday and practicing internationally on Friday. They're not adjusting to the time difference, instead just focused on football. We saw the Buffalo Bills struggle to keep up with the Jacksonville Jaguars after traveling late in the week — could the same happen with the Chiefs? The Miami Dolphins will be without De'Von Achane for an extended period of time after suffering a knee injury in Sunday's win over the New York Giants. The Dolphins are yet to make a decision on if Achane will land on injured reserve, meaning he'd be sidelined for at least four weeks. Miami may give the rookie tailback an extended period of time off, considering that the team has a Week 10 bye — the same week Achane is eligible to return. Achane is an instant success with the Dolphins, 11 runs of 10 or more yards, and leading the league with a PFF grade of 94.7. He's needed just 38 attempts to rush for 460 yards, the second-most in the NFL. Coach Mike McDaniel's offense leads the NFL with an average of 511 yards per game — will the team maintain that mark with one of its biggest playmakers? The New York Giants forced the Miami Dolphins into three turnovers yesterday but couldn't parlay them into a win Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw two interceptions, including a pick-six, but it wasn't enough to derail an offense that scored on two separate three-play drives. Coach Mike McDaniel continues to flash his background as a run game coordinator as De'Von Achane ran for 151 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. In comparison, Raheem Mostert added another 65 yards and another touchdown. Overall, the Dolphins averaged 9.7 yards on the ground and improved to 2-0 at home with a 15-point win over the Giants. Miami Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel Monday Presser
Coach Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins are determined to run the football more in 2023 — who thought it would go this well? The Dolphins ran for 350 yards on eight yards per carry and scored five rushing touchdowns against the Denver Broncos, so why was this team chasing other running backs throughout the offseason? Will Raheem Mostert end the season as RB1? Can De'Von Achane have an impact for each of the next 14 games? We doubted Miami's group of running backs once, will we make the same mistake again? Keep in mind, Chris Brooks ran the ball nine times for 66 yards and Jeff Wilson Jr. may be activated off injured reserve after one more game. The home opener! Expect Hard Rock Stadium to be loud as the Miami Dolphins play in South Florida for the first time this season. Coach Mike McDaniel's squad found early success with wins in back-to-back road games against AFC opponents to kickstart the 2023 season. The Dolphins got to Mac Jones for four sacks and eight quarterback hits last week and will now face a Denver Broncos offensive line that allowed Russell Wilson to be sacked seven times against Washington last week. All eyes will be on Tua Tagovailoa and Miami's high-powered offense against a Denver defense that has struggled early in the season. Robert Mays, host of The Athletic Football Show, summarized this offense with the perfect stat: 17.5 percent of Miami's plays have been explosive so far. There is a greater gap between them at one and the team at two than between teams 2-11. Jaelan Phillips hopes to return to the lineup after missing last week's game and should play an important role against a quarterback who likes to sit in the pocket and let plays develop. Most importantly, improving to 3-0 with a win in the home opener is an opportunity Miami can't squander. Another Dolphins Podcast is hosted by Joshua Houtz (@Houtz) and Jake Mendel (@JMendel94). The Miami Dolphins flirted with Dalvin Cook and Jonathan Taylor throughout the offseason but ultimately chose to stick with Raheem Mostert as the team's starting running back. Mostert had a handful of good games in his first season with the Dolphins, and Sunday Night Football featured a balanced attack — the Patriots simply struggled to keep up. Coach Mike McDaniel called 30 pass plays and 30 rushing plays as Mostert took the ball 18 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns. The question becomes — how long can Miami's rushing success continue before airing it out to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle? Only two teams began the season with back-to-back road wins, including the Dolphins. Sunday Night Football featured a divisional bout with the New England Patriots, but Miami had enough answers to solidify a 24-17 win in Week 2. Coach Mike McDaniel showcased a 50/50 split with 30 pass attempts and 30 rush attempts against New England. Raheem Mostert stole the show with 121 rushing yards on 18 attempts, his best performance since running all over the Bills last December. It wasn't the prettiest game, but Miami showcased the ability to smooth out road bumps when moving the football. Defensively, Jaelan Phillips was sidelined, but Bradley Chubb and Andrew Van Ginkel answered the call. Mac Jones was sacked four times and Xavien Howard secured another interception against the Patriots. It's hard not to like where the Miami Dolphins are now — but we're all wondering how far they can go. Another Dolphins Podcast is hosted by Joshua Houtz (@Houtz) and Jake Mendel (@JMendel94). Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw an interception to begin Saturday's preseason game against the Houston Texans but the fourth-year quarterback had a strong performance overall in his first live action since Dec. 25, 2022. Houston's Denzel Perryman intercepted Tagovailoa, who finished the day 5-7 for 61 yards. The former Alabama standout quarterback looked comfortable during a 93-yard drive that closed with a touchdown from Raheem Mostert. Coach Mike McDaniel was determined to run the football and closed the game with 205 rushing yards. That said, the Dolphins saw some good things from Tagovailoa and second-year player Skylar Thompson. The Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons spent the week battles in joint practices ahead of Friday night's game at hard rock stadium. The Falcons offer a unique challenge as they're a team built in the trenches and on the ground. Meanwhile, the Dolphins are a finesse bunch flying around the football field. The joint practices have allowed the Dolphins to focus on their weaknesses in the trenches and at linebackers while Tua Tagovailoa and the offense have been hit-or-miss against the Atlanta defense. Coach Mike McDaniel didn't seem to like Miami's effort in the first practice with the Falcons and held back on awarding an orange jersey for the first time this year. The Miami Dolphins have until Aug. 29 to solidify opening day's 53-man roster and Friday's bout with the Atlanta Falcons is the first of three major tests for 90 players hoping to stick with the team. Coach Mike McDaniel wasn't clear on if Tua Tagovailoa and the starters will play on Friday, but there is still much to learn about the 2023 Miami Dolphins. Miami has question marks at left guard, right tackle, and cornerback — some of those questions could be answered against the Falcons. Is Isaiah Wynn ready to take over at left guard? De'Von Achane returning kicks? Who wins a heated race at wide receiver? Could Skylar Thompson be second on the depth chart to begin the year?
