A few months ago, Instagram suggested I start following a guy named Jake Thomas. I'd never heard of him, but when I saw that we followed a lot of the same people, ran in the same circles, and had a lot in common, I thought, "Why not?" One thing Jake said that stuck with me was, “Every day is day one.” See, Jake grew up in New Orleans in a suburban family. He appeared “good” on the outside and his family seemed “perfect"...but things were NOT good OR perfect. Having no direction or purpose in his life, and while carrying a lot of suppressed emotional baggage he didn't know what to do with, Jake joined the Marines at age 17, where he found leadership, assertiveness, and mission. But after he left the Marines, he lost all sense of identity. Even working in the oil fields and making plenty of money, he couldn't handle reality and escaped with booze and "pleasurable company." He also got fat and inflamed. His turning point came at age 30, when he finally got fed up and asked himself, “Dude! Where are you going? What are you doing?!” Determined to clean up his act, Jake researched human physiology and discovered that what we eat impacts everything in our lives, including our mind and spirit. Jake took control of his eating (he went carnivore) and adopted the same training style used in recruit training in the Marines, which is where "every day is day one" comes from. The day recruits ARRIVE for training is day ZERO. The day they START is day ONE. As Jake explains, it doesn't matter what you look like on day zero. When training starts on day one, it's on. Everybody is the same on day one. Jake also says that “The single most effective thing we can do as human beings is controlling what we put in our mouth.” Amen! And you can start doing that today, even if you've never done it a day in your life or you've gone back to your old ways. Every day is day one, which means every day you can "start training" again. Exodus 14 of the Bible includes a famous story everyone's heard about: The parting of the Red Sea. The Israelites were fleeing captivity and slavery in Egypt at the hands of Pharaoh. With the Egyptian army closing in on them, the Israelites stood at the edge of the Red Sea with nowhere to go. So God told Moses to stretch out his arm to part the waters... BUT the waters didn't part until the children of Israel TOOK A STEP toward the Red Sea. In the New Testament of the Bible, while Jesus was walking on water, he told Peter to take a step toward him - ON the water - to meet him. These stories remind me that the first step is usually the hardest. (Or, as we say in boxing, the first round is the hardest.) For example, at the half-marathon most of my Coaches and I ran in Jackson Hole, Wyoming this year, that first mile was the hardest. The first step is usually the scariest, too, no matter what you're doing...starting a business, going on a first date, or even starting the Code Red Lifestyle™. I wish more people understood that NOT taking that hard or scary first step is worse than the fear or difficulty of taking it. I'm not good at very many things, but I don't fear taking chances, because when I take a chance, I have a 50/50 chance of being right. Sometimes I'm right. Sometimes I'm not. But I find out. If I don't take a chance, on the other hand, I have a zero percent chance of being right. A friend of mine recently had a miscarriage. This was after going through IVF, hormone treatments, and working SO hard to get herself healthy, so she could get pregnant and carry a fetus. It was tough. But she began to come up with a plan, which was to get back to baseline, because she'd gained 15 pounds doing IVF and wanted to lose that. I suggested that what she needed was to reset and recover, and give herself time to heal her grieving heart. Resetting and recovering are things many people dismiss as "being weak" or "wasting time"...OR as something you only do if you've gone through an accident, miscarriage, divorce, loss, or some other tough experience. When sharing the Code Red Lifestyle™, people don't believe what they hear, they believe what they see. That's how people decide if something is going to work or not. They look for proof, aka "the fruit" of what it produces. Actual fruit doesn't just pop up on its own. It's produced on a vine or tree. This is why I've posted a before and after picture of a Rebel who's lost weight every single day for the past eight years, plus stories that go along with them. It's to show people "the fruit" that Code Red produces when you live the lifestyle consistently and correctly. A lot of people who start living the Code Red Lifestyle™ want to inspire their friends and family to join. One of THE best ways to do that is by actually living the lifestyle and letting your results do the talking. An example: Say your mailman sees you at the mailbox, notices you've lost weight, and asks what's going on. "Oh, I'm doing Code Red. It's real food water, and sleep. No shakes, pills, diet foods, or exercise," you reply. That mailman, your pastor's wife, your sister-in-law, they're all going to notice "the fruit" of your work. Another example: Let's say you're in an Uber and the driver tells you, "I'd really like to lose weight. I've been struggling the last four years, busting my butt at the gym three days a week. I haven't skipped one single workout, and I'm not losing weight. It's just so frustrating." You could say, "I've lost 135 pounds on a program called Code Red," and the Uber driver will probably be impressed. But if you reach your phone forward (wait for a red stoplight or until you arrive at your destination!!) with a before picture, so they can compare it to how you look now, THAT's going to make much more of an impact than just saying it. When the Newness Wears Off

This episode is about what you do when the newness of a program or “fresh start” wears off. In her book, Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, shares that the anticipation of getting something is usually better than actually getting it. (Not always. Sometimes it's WAY better, like the new dress I just bought! But mostly, she's right.) Very often the excitement and anticipation dwindle before you even get what it is you're going for! The point is, newness always wears off, and that's when a lot of people go looking for some new way to feel excited instead of continuing to do what works just because it's not "new and exciting" anymore. I see this every single time on the Facebook 10 Pound Takedown. The week leading up to Day 1 and Day 1 itself have the most posting and engagement. The excitement is palpable. But once Day 1 hits, people start dropping off, because the dopamine hit they got from "a new start" begins to fade (which it always does, no matter the situation). I've been in the weight loss industry for thirty years as of 2024, and when it comes to weight loss, I've seen everything you can imagine. Pills, shakes, powders, and crazy "diets" come and go year after year, decade after decade. I've changed my stance on a few things over the years, too. For example, I used to believe in frequent eating for weight loss, and that the low-fat/high-carb diet was the "healthiest." I used to give my mom grief for not eating breakfast (which she didn't do because she wasn't hungry first thing in the morning). When I first started Code Red fourteen years ago, people lost weight much more slowly, and that's for two reasons: I was still learning, so the program wasn't as good as it is now I allowed people to eat one cheat meal a week I come from a bodybuilding background, and one cheat meal a week is what bodybuilders often do. But many average Americans don't work out consistently (or at all), and most are metabolically broken. (More importantly, you cannot out-train a bad diet, no matter how much you exercise.) What I eventually figured out is that a healthy, super fit bodybuilder eating one cheat meal a week is a completely different situation than an obese grandmother who can't get out of her recliner without help eating one cheat meal a week. It also became crystal clear that cheat meals led my clients to take one step forward and TWO steps back. Plus, once they started cheating, they couldn't contain it to just one meal. This episode is about expecting a miracle when you're not willing to do your part to get it. John Chapter 5 in the Bible illustrates this perfectly. People believed that once a year an angel came down to stir the waters in the Pool of Bethesda, and the first person to touch the stirred water was healed. A paralyzed man had been there for thirty-eight years trying to get into the pool. Jesus came to help him, but interestingly, he didn't heal the man right away. Instead, he first asked him if he wanted to be healed...and instead of just saying yes, the guy whined and felt sorry for himself because nobody would put him in the pool. I see a version of this when I ask people if they want to lose the weight. Many tell me, "Yes, BUT..." and rattle off excuses about why they can't, kinda like the paralyzed man at the Pool of Bethesda did. Until that man was willing to quit focusing on his excuses, he couldn't be helped, and it's the same for us. If we want our excuses more than our results, we won't get our results. The Book of Exodus in the Bible tells the story of how God used Moses to free the Israelites from centuries of enslavement in Egypt. Egypt's ruler, Pharaoh, refused to let God's people go, so God sent plagues into Egypt. The second of those plagues was frogs. EVERYWHERE. Frogs in their houses, in their bedrooms, in their beds, in their servant's houses, and even ON the Egyptians and their servants! Can you imagine? (I can't imagine touching one frog, much less having wall-to-wall frogs in my house, in my bed, and hopping all over me!) But this is the part of the story that always gets me. When Moses went to Pharaoh and asked him when he should remove the frogs, you know what Pharaoh said? "Tomorrow." Uh…what??? WHY would Pharaoh want his people to spend even one more night with the frogs? It seems weird, but how often in life do we wait around in rotten situations, like Pharaoh did with the frogs, instead of starting NOW? This podcast episode is about why success is next to impossible without enough skin in the game. People message me all the time and say, "I bought a Home Study program for my nephew, and he never even did it," or "I bought a Home Study program for my mom, and she never lost any weight with it." This is sad, but it doesn't surprise me at all, because I've NEVER seen anybody succeed when they don't have skin in the game. Meaning, they're not going to value something they get for free because people do not value free (especially if someone else forces it on them, even with good intentions). It's the same if you buy something for your kids vs. if you make them purchase part of it themselves. If they help buy it, they will appreciate it more. (Same deal with their time. If they help choose and cook breakfast, they'll be more invested in eating it.) It's not about the money (or even the time) itself. It's about the fact that most people aren't invested enough if they don't trade something of value to them in order to get a result they say they want. Some people do pay and STILL won't work the program. For example, people buy online courses or a book, then don't take the course, won't watch the videos, and won't read the book...all because it's not worth their time to finish it. They just don't have ENOUGH skin in the game. I can't even wrap my head around instant or easy success. Any success I have sure as heck wasn't instant. I paid for it with blood, sweat, and tears. I've got a documentary coming out, and Lord knows most people who see it will say I'm an overnight success. Nope. It's taken me 25 years to become an “overnight” success. Code Red is the easiest hard out there, but people on our program have had to cry at times and say no to the chili feeds and bake sales. They've had to measure their food, spend Sundays getting their chicken cooked, and take their water bottle wherever they go. The gimmicky quick fix is appealing. I get it. AND nobody's gonna hand your success to you. Even if they did, then without skin in the game, you wouldn't value it, so you wouldn't be satisfied with it. "Well, you don't know me, Cristy." Maybe not, but I know human nature, and without skin the game, we don't value what we have (or what we COULD have if we'd just do our part to get it). Most people want change without having to change. The thing is, change is inevitable. You can wait around for it to strike in the form of disaster, or you can design it yourself and have some control over it. Training a dog is a great example of this. A trained dog is easier to control than an untrained dog. The catch is, you've gotta design how you want your dog to behave, and then train it to meet that design. You can also leave your dog to its own devices...it'll do what dogs do...and it'll probably turn into a "disaster" of a dog. Same with anything in your life. Your relationships, your finances, your health, how you spend your time... You can either design it into what you want it to be...or you can wait around for it to turn into a disaster. And while you can't control every little thing that happens, I guarantee you have more impact on your own life (and health) than you think. In this week's episode we're talking about doing TOO much to get a result you want (like weight loss). It's pretty easy to get sucked into thinking you need "all the bells and whistles"....even though they won't do jack squat to move the needle in whatever result you're working to get for yourself. Case in point: I once bought an Oura Ring and paid over $300 for it. It's a beautiful ring that looks like a wedding ring, and it measures all sorts of metrics in your body, including core temperature, heart rate variability, and tons of other stuff. In other words, it had all the bells and whistles. But I ended up just selling it, all because it measured TOO MUCH stuff that I didn't understand or care about...stuff that wasn't going to move the needle for me. A lot of people fall prey to complicated bells and whistles that promise you everything but the kitchen sink...while simultaneously ignoring the non-negotiable basics that actually move the needle. I get asked this question all the time: "Cristy, how do I build more confidence?" It always shocks me how little confidence most people have. Next to self-worth, it's probably the biggest thing people struggle with. I think it's pretty well known that I've got loads of confidence. I'm 47. I've lived a lot of life, and I've done a lot of things. But I know a lot of people my age who don't have a lot of confidence, so it's not just an age thing. So why is it that I have so much confidence, even in things that I don't know how to do, including in things I'm not skilled at and in situations I've never been in? I would say, “I can't, I can't, I can't,” a lot because I believed that I couldn't. Then my mom caught me saying it and told me, “You are NOT, ‘Cristy, I can't!' You are, ‘Cristy, I can!'” I believed her, and it totally shifted what I believed I could do in life. You cannot be successful if your words aren't right. You've got to watch your mouth! Thoughts become things, but words give our thoughts power. And you can create OR destroy just from what you say. I know because this topic is something I didn't actually wanna get into. I felt resistance and I didn't wanna know the truth. At the same time, I DO want to learn, because when it comes to relationships, I don't wanna make the same mistakes I've already made. To help me help you with this, too, I invited special guest Brad Pickett onto the podcast to talk about choosing how someone loves us. As in, when it comes to love, we want to CHOOSE how other people love us. We want to change them to be who WE think they should be. When it's clear they aren't gonna change (or if they do, it's just to get us to shut up about it, so they resent us while only pretending to change), we get mad at THEM... When really, we're the ones who put these expectations on another person that they didn't ask for. Listen, there's nothing wrong with asking for what you want. But expecting someone to change who they are to love you how you say you want to be loved is trying to choose how someone loves you. And your expectations could be the source of fights, arguments and other problems in your life. Brad Pickett joins me again for this week's podcast, and we'll be talking about voting...but probably not in the way you're thinking. Yes, you go to the polls and vote for politicians. And any time you buy something, you're voting with your dollar (whether you realize it or not). But neither of those are the kind of voting Brad and I are talking about in this week's new podcast. We're talking about voting with your THOUGHTS. Seriously, did you know that with EVERY thought, you are voting for your future? Most people don't realize it, but we CONSTANTLY have thoughts. (Some people call it "inner dialogue.") Some thoughts are pretty silly. Some are positive. Some are negative. And those negative thoughts can be a real problem. I first became aware of my thoughts back in 2016, when I met my first business coach, Natasha. She came into my office for weight loss and went on to lose 55.5 pounds in five months. Then she started helping me with my business and my mindset, and one of the first things we worked on were my thoughts. When I followed her suggestions, my world took a complete 180-degree turn! It was crazy (in a good way)! If you've ever gotten to your goal weight, felt lost, and regained weight, this episode will help you understand what happened. Here's the scoop. I boxed as a licensed professional fighter from 2002 to 2010. There was a lot of training, but I loved the feeling of knowing I could do hard things. After I retired from boxing, I felt lost. My identity was no longer "a fighter." To cope with that feeling, I immediately transitioned into another extreme sport: Cycling. And then I trained my butt off for that! Fast forward to this year, and I trained and got on stage for a bodybuilding competition at age 47. There are other really hard things I've sought out in my life, too...like hiking Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon in 2021...like climbing Mt. Whitney last year...and many others. What doing all these hard things has taught me is that when something is over that you really worked at, you can get depressed. You can feel lost and like you don't have a purpose anymore... Kinda like when you finally get to goal weight and find yourself thinking, "Now what??" In this episode, I'm revealing what YOU can do to prevent the "Now what?" feeling from causing you to re-gain weight after you reach goal. This episode is about what it REALLY takes to lose the weight and keep it off. It's not about foods or supplements, or anything else you might think. It's about going the distance. I fought 15 pro fights all over the world during my boxing career, and in all that time, I was never knocked OUT, even fighting some of the toughest girls on the planet…because I could go the distance. See, one way you decide who to fight in boxing is by scouting the other fighters. As in, can she go the distance? Does she have the stamina to be able to last the whole fight? (A fighter that tires easily makes for a short, boring fight.) Getting what you want in life - like losing the weight and keeping it off for good - requires going the distance, too. When someone says to you, “You need to stop being so obsessed with your health,” you probably take it as an insult, right? "Obsession" has such a negative connotation that someone calling you obsessed about anything supposedly isn't "nice." But consider which is worse...to be obsessed with exercise and bodybuilding, or obsessed with drugs and alcohol? (We don't exercise for weight loss on Code Red, but you get my point.) Or how about this one...when you go on vacation, you can be obsessed about eating as much unhealthy food as you can get your hands on, or obsessed with healthy choices, getting your water in, and sleeping. And Katie bar the door if you choose real food, water, and sleep over "wine-thirty" and enough dessert to feed an entire small town!
