The world is already full of lies, but none of those need to come from you... Because lies that come from ourselves are the hardest to overcome. Someone outside you tells you you're fine, but you know you're not, so you dismiss it because you know it's not true. However, the moment you tell yourself you “feel” fine, even at 80lbs overweight and battling six different chronic conditions, the lie becomes much harder to ignore. The longer you entertain the lie, the more “real” it feels, until you can no longer distinguish it from the truth. And that's when tragedy strikes! People typically act on truths. With false beliefs at the helm, we alter our actions and responses to enable those beliefs, to the detriment of our REAL goals. Maybe you're sick, overweight and hurting all over. Back then, the internet primarily carried a hefty bunch of reliable informative resources. But it has grown to become the heavily opinion-based “grieving” ground. People are influenced to become “woke”, and to shout at the top of their lungs what they think and feel… With little to no regard for what is true and what RIGHTFULLY NEEDS TO BE DONE. People will hate us for telling them to get rid of sugar like it's some sort of violation against their rights. They'll make ugly remarks on not needing “that much” water. They'll justify why they get very little sleep. But the truth stands! REAL food, water and sleep need to take over their lives in order to become healthy. Bad health won't wait. It's going to get worse unless we act NOW! So, regardless of what you think or feel, you still need to take action. The sooner the better! And what of feelings? Are they any less true than the commitments we have? Change isn't the enemy. Advancements in technology and other fields aren't inherently good nor bad! It's what we make of these changes that matter. And so why should we stop ourselves from experiencing and leveraging these in order to better our lives? It's stubbornness that's the true enemy. Stuck in our old ways, we leave so many opportunities on the table! We need to understand that when an opportunity – to improve our quality of life, to thrive – presents itself, it's up to us to embrace the change. But we can count on stubbornness to put up a fight. Accepting change won't be always easy, especially when change comes in quick succession. Change can be overwhelming. We might have to put in the work in order to keep up, but that's no excuse to throw opportunities down the drain. In any aspect of life, especially in health and wellness, throw out what no longer serves your purpose. Throw out what no longer makes you happy. Make way for the new things that will send you in a direction of better! Still think excessive sugar has no repercussions to your health? Still reluctant about accepting the idea that there's no shortcut to becoming healthy? Still believe your current circle of friends will help you get you to goal weight? You're sick, tired, obese and can barely call your existence a life. Consider that it's time to make a paradigm shift! Sometimes, the best thing anyone can do for themselves is to sit still and do nothing. HO HO HO! We can smell ‘em keyboard warriors rearing to smack us with some self-righteous ideals from miles away! There's bound to be someone who'll read this and say, “that's just lazy!” Or maybe something along the lines of, “not everyone's a privileged schmuck who can afford to bum around…”. We can't blame them because in the context of the recent/on-going pandemic, where a lot of people lost their livelihood, telling someone to “sit still” just seems so inconsiderate, maybe even offensive. And so, we're obliged to extend the context… When was the last time you made time for yourself? When was the last time you considered the state of your HEALTH above things like work and responsibilities? A heck load of people have become so addicted to being BUSY to the point where they've NEGLECTED the truly important things like health and family. And for what? There's this mentality that success equates to hustling and grinding, overcommitting and overextending oneself, else, running themselves to the ground. Like that's the only way to provide for their families, meet the demands of daily life, and maybe one day, earn the right to “live the dream”. But what if there was another way? A way that promotes productivity instead of being busy. A way that puts more weight on progress rather than the motions. A way where you get to REALLY LIVE! Fight-or-flight response is an evolutionary survival mechanism that's wreaking havoc in our lives today, and most of us don't even realize it! It is a primitive reaction that triggers the release of hormones and other chemicals in the body to help us respond to a perceived threat, whether real or imagined. Basically, it's genetic instructions that tell us to run when we can and fight only as a last resort. What's troubling is that this crude mechanism, though still applicable in today's settings, is causing us more harm than good. Because we're not meant to simply survive...we all NEED to THRIVE! Here's where it gets tricky: it seems like most of us will keep running away from living a healthy lifestyle until they no longer can, at which point, “fighting” is no longer an option. Why run from healthy living? It's because most of us have grown accustomed and comfortable with eating junk food, drinking alcohol, and getting little to no sleep – to the point where real food, water and sleep have become “threatening” to a “way of life”. Here's some news to get things into perspective… Not getting your dose of sugary treats or your buzz from booze or missing an episode of your fave sitcom aren't threats… Poor health and obesity are the REAL THREATS! And we keep running towards ‘em every darn time! This has GOT TO CHANGE! For others, it's simpler (but NOT less important) like being a parent, a son or daughter, or a friend. Each of our unique purposes are meant to contribute to a higher purpose: for all life to thrive and prosper! In finding that purpose, you stand to gain the LIFE YOU TRULY DESIRE! In CodeRed, we're fortunate enough to be able to serve our communities as teachers who educate others about living a healthy lifestyle, and as warriors fighting against the plague that is obesity (and all diseases it entails). Seeing the frog's predicament, you know it's going to need your help, but that frog's not going to try to get itself out until the water heats up to an uncomfortable temperature. Isn't that how it is with most people? We can see they're in dire need of losing excess weight, but until they start feeling the need to help themselves, they're not going to want help. No matter what you say, even the truth about obesity, if people choose not to hear you out, there's just no convincing them! We're not asking you to give up on your loved ones, rather, we're asking you to acknowledge that there are other truths that may garner positive responses… Like the truth about needing time and space to figure things out for themselves. It was probably difficult for our parents too, watching us fall down again and again. Yet here we are today, making our parents, family, and friends proud. Learning. Knowing. Doing. Succeeding. Rinsing and repeating. Weight loss shouldn't be anything different! Take those baby steps! Break down the goal into smaller chunks that you can tackle one at a time. Normal is NOT always what SHOULD BE. The idea of being normal is one that has been deeply ingrained in our minds. We have been conditioned to believe that there is a right way and a wrong way to do things. But what is normal? How do we define it? Is it what the majority of people think, or a set of rules which society has dictated over time? “Boys will be boys.” “Nice girls don't.” “Girls take care of their weight because they need to be attractive.” “Boys can be fat and still get a girl.” Should girls really work on their weight for aesthetics? Is it okay for boys to be fat? Shouldn't the point of taking care of one's body, regardless of sex or gender, be for health? We've got to think about these things… Just because something's normal in the eyes of many, doesn't mean it's RIGHT thing to do. This is especially true when it comes to health and wellness! Shouldn't we all encourage healthy behaviors instead of shunning those who are trying to improve themselves in whatever way possible? Doesn't it make more sense to give people the right information instead of discouraging them with our words or actions? Isn't it important to correct misinformation instead of blindly following ineffective/harmful trends that have been going around the industry since ages? More importantly, when someone else is right, isn't it only logical that WE are the ones to CHANGE our ways instead of asking them to conform? We're not in the habit of arguing because we want to be right. When it comes down to it, we argue because we know what's right and we want others to know what we do, and to do the things that will get them to the healthy body they deserve to have. There is a strong underlying idea that we can't be happy until we accomplish something. It might be a degree, a new job, a better body or the perfect relationship. And it's not only tangible achievements like these. We also have the idea that we must reach certain levels of mental and spiritual attainment before we can be happy. The problem with this viewpoint is that it keeps us stuck in the same cycle of “I'll be happy when…” We keep putting off our happiness for another day — for when we get that thing — and in the meantime, we become frustrated, stressed and unfulfilled. This mentality keeps us from doing the things we want to do for fear of not doing them perfectly or achieving them perfectly or being ready for them. And at the same time, those who do achieve their goals often find themselves still feeling empty inside because they never stopped to ask themselves what they wanted out of life beyond just achieving these goals. How many times have you delayed getting to goal weight? Once you do achieve goal weight, what of it? What does reaching your goals mean to you? In this episode, we want to shine the light on YOU! It's YOU who can define what you truly want. It's YOU who needs to appreciate the ups and downs in your journey to good health. It's YOU who can decide what you'll make of the experiences along the way, and the benefits of reaching goal weight. This is why I believe that happiness comes from within and not from any external factors. The moment you come out of your mother's womb you're placed on a road… In your earlier years where you couldn't come up with sound decisions of your own, it was the environment you were in and the people around you who influenced the actions you took. It was your parents, your siblings, maybe your aunts and uncles who taught you which direction to take along the road you're on. Now that you can make sound decisions on your own, we want to ask you this… Are you headed towards the direction of good health? Having been raised in a household where real food was the staple, are you keeping true to the direction of good health? And if you lived in a home where junk food and vices were the norm, are you now steering clear of those and travelling towards a healthy lifestyle? Unclear of your bearing, maybe you decide to just “stay in the middle” or “get off the road”. The thing to note is that you're not on a freeway where you can simply choose to exit or to wait it out on the curb. Every action you take is either pushing you towards or away from good health. No matter your beliefs about health, that road is going nowhere. You'll always be on it so long as you live and breathe. That's why it's always in your best interest to figure out which direction you want to take. “But where do I begin? “I should've known better.” The most common line that usually precedes a statement of regret, precedes submission to a past fault – that which most people fixate on as they succumb to the belief that “now, it's too late”. If you knew back then what you know now, would that have made difference? Would you be healthy right now if you knew about the consequences of substance abuse and poor eating habits? Would you have done things differently and focused on a healthy lifestyle? It's easy to say, “Yes, things would be better today”; nonetheless, we'll never really know, right? Because those “ifs” are merely vestiges of the past and there's no turning back time. And so, what of our new realizations? What of the knowledge we possess right now? Are they for naught, because there're no do-overs? In today's episode, we'll be talking about the things we'd like our younger selves to know, not for the sake of past but for posterity. We take the learnings from past struggles, apply them to our present lives, so that we may move forward with the prospect of living better lives in the future. That's the key: Moving forward and to a direction of “Better”. Our superiority over other living species on earth lies not in our power to control everything but in our free will. When God made humans stewards of His creations, we weren't given extra comic book superpowers nor omnipotence. He knew that our intelligence coupled with the power to choose were enough for us to perform His will. This fact greatly showed when Noah excellently performed His will. Noah had no control over the flood. What he could control was his response to God's call. And so he chose to tap into his resources including God's grace and guidance, his family, and natural resources to build an ark. Noah could've chosen to disobey God. He could've sulked in despair over the inevitable natural disaster and let the flood consume his family and the creatures he was called to save. BUT he chose otherwise. And that's the key! There will always be circumstances in our lives and in our weight loss journey that we CANNOT control! But we're NEVER powerless! Surrendering to trials and tragedies is NOT our only OPTION. There's always something we can control and we have the power to choose our responses to the challenges we face. You can beat the environment when you have the discipline to make the difficult choices. 2 things are most likely to happen when you put a person under the lens. Either they fake it or they show you the truth. But no matter which path they take, they'll be glorifying something. Why is this relevant? In a world where the internet is far reaching and cameras are in everyone's pockets, dashboards, head gears, offices and homes, there's always someone watching. At any given time, the human population can share and consume countless information. And when there's that much information going around, it becomes harder to discern truths from lies. Information, regardless of whether it's true or not, is powerful. When we cannot discern one from the other, we become vulnerable to the influence of things that shouldn't be glorified, and instead should be criticized, denounced or even condemned for the harm they may deal to people. You think telling people that junk food has no ill effects to the human body and is therefore “okay” to consume should be glorified? Masked as a mere “opinion”, things like these are destructive information! And should you be vilifying someone who is “against” your perception of beauty because s/he believes that genes and age shouldn't justify obesity? These are just some contributors to the plague that is obesity. When people glorify the wrong things about health, unknowingly or deliberately, they empower obesity and the complications that come with. In this regard, we invite you to consider the messages you're putting on social media. What message are you sharing with the world? Whom or what are you glorifying with your lifestyle? Hating your food but finishing it anyway is an intriguing phenomenon. Despite the intense emotions of anger and hatred that we feel towards a certain food, many of us “can't help it” and continue to eat ‘em anyway. We're not talking about disliking food for their looks, taste or smell. We're talking about hating food (that we otherwise would probably love) because they occupy space in our homes and in our lives. “What?! Absurd! Why would anyone hate food for being in their life?” If this ain't a thing for you, you can probably ask someone who's on a weight loss program and has to deal with food that should be disposed of – food that should never have made their way into the house in the first place but are there anyway. Ask someone who struggles with obesity but chooses to eat the junk food in their house because the alternative is throwing (wasting) the food away. Not everyone struggles with this BUT everyone can still pick up important lessons from this phenomenon. Achilles would probably have lived longer if he protected his heels. Might not have had iron greaves then but he sure could've protected this vulnerable spot one way or another, if only he wasn't too focused on being invulnerable. Depending on the account, some might argue that Paris just got lucky with that arrow to the heel, or Achilles was simply unlucky to have been on the receiving end of Apollo's anger. What's this myth got to do with weight loss? Well, the story of Achilles might not have been real but losing everything to complacency is! However fit, healthy, or strong you think you've gotten, you CAN lose everything to a single “unlucky” moment when you become complacent. A stroke can come without warning, a spouse might catch you cheating and decide to end your relationship, your business might fall because you became complacent. You CAN regain all the fats, illnesses and disorders, among other physical complications you've lost because of a single uninhibited trip to Taco Bell. One trip to your favorite fast food chain can become two trips. Sooner or later, you'll find that you're no longer preplanning, pre-measuring, and pre-logging your meals, and instead, you're making a habit of eating junk food AGAIN. We've said it before…our country doesn't have a weight loss problem. We're faced with a weight REGAIN problem. People forget how good it feels to be healthy and unburdened by physical complications and maintenance medicines. People lose sight of why they worked so hard to lose all that weight. The expression dates back to when indoor plumbing wasn't a thing and families would share the same bathwater. So, the punchline… By the time they finish bathing the baby, with so many having used the same bathwater, the water would be so murky that one might accidentally “throw the baby out with the bathwater”. It's a funny expression in the sense that no one would throw out something so precious along with one undesirable thing…ermm…right? Oh WAIT! That's currently what our society does! Isn't it common nowadays that when someone we support and follow on social media features something we don't agree with/believe in, we're quick to hit the unfollow/unsubscribe button? We're often quick to judge and we treat “petty” and “different” to be nuances of “intolerable” and “toxic”. Is giving up on your weight loss program (and your health) after having a disagreement with your coach, about foods you should eat, the way to go? You're probably asking…what's the alternative? When it comes to health, you want to be certain. Our goal is for people to take their health back from years of abuse due to poor eating habits, poor water consumption and sleep deprivation, among other factors. If we want to achieve that goal, we need people to strongly believe in us. We need people to see that we did the research and put in the work. We built a culture where people look to empirical data, scholarly articles, scientific studies, and credible sources before making decisions that affect health. One such article is from The New England Journal of Medicine where they showcase a study, made by N. A. Christakis, and J. H. Fowler, on the spread of obesity in a large social network over 32 years. Results show that people's chances of becoming obese increase by 57% if s/he has a friend who is obese in a given interval. Among pairs of adult siblings, there's a 40% increased chance of one becoming obese if the other is obese. Furthermore, if one spouse is obese, the other has a 37% increased chance of becoming the same. One conclusion derived from the study is that obesity appears to spread through social ties. Today on Rebel Weight Loss & Lifestyle we are talking about cutting out the noise.   Can you honestly say you remember all that you had before it got so noisy? Don't you miss ‘em? The peace and serenity? The focus? The sincerity of it all? All of which now seem unprecedented in the face of so much noise! What happened to turning off the radio and TV so we can enjoy a peaceful meal with our families? What happened to giving attention to what matter, like your health and your family? It seems like when technology evolved, it changed the dynamics of consumption. Where we used to consume information, noise now consumes us. It's a barrage! FB, IG, Tiktok and Twitter posts everywhere! Messenger, Zoom, FaceTime calls left and right. Not to mention all the other websites out there. Oh and of course, TVs and radios still exist. Crazy, right? How you can't seem to get away from the misinformation, biases and censorship? How private lives aren't so private anymore? How it's gotten harder to focus on REAL goals when you're centered on other people's achievements? It's like you don't know who you are anymore, not with everyone else's voice drowning out your own. It's stressing you out and it's heavily affecting your health and well-being. If you don't consciously and proactively give yourself a fighting chance, you really will fall victim! You have a choice! Not everything is noise when you learn how to be more discerning. From there, you CAN cut out the noise, especially the toxic ones. There are ways around this and that's what we're here to talk about! We're going to be loud about this message but it's not going to be noise. Today on Rebel Weight Loss and Lifestyle we discuss struggling through things vs. working hard at things in life. We all have things in life that is just not worth it, not worth it for your health or for your happiness.  Do you have things in your life that you absolutely struggle through? What do you mean Cristy, you asked.  Being in a place of being miserable can truly do more harm than good. So a few examples here: Cari hates to run, she will not run very far or for very long especially if you put her on a treadmill.  Now put Cari on the stairs and she will go longer, go farther and truly get more out of the experience including wanting to do it again another time. Or Cristy had a very rough time doing evening meetings for Code Red.  She did not give as much to the meetings that she needed to for the other participants and she was not gaining anything by being there at an evening meeting.  So guess what, Code Red meetings now never happen in the evening allowing everyone to get more from Cristy during those meetings. We use a scale to track our weight loss but so many do not do anything to track their sleep.   In comes tracking our sleep and we mentioned having a FitBit to help you measure and just in case you are in need of getting one I have made it easier for you.  Just hit the link and you are there:  Fitbit Charge 3 Fitness Activity Tracker https://amzn.to/3tHfVGQ   As a reminder we are not affiliated with Fitbit   Key Takeaways:   (Cristy 8:22) All three steep sleep stages are equally important, light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep, all, give you a different type of recovery and they're all equally important   (Cari 10:33)  Since I got the watch and not the watch itself, but being aware of my sleep has changed.  My sleep habits, just having a number and knowing where I need to improve, because you could get beautiful amount in each sleep stage, but if you didn't quite get enough time altogether, your sleep score is lower.   (Cristy 15:34)  Any food in my stomach will, will make me toss and turn I'll get up. I won't feel good and my sleep score will be like an 82 and that's that's low for me   (Cristy 15:50)  You need to be moving in a direction of improvements. So if you are normally in the sixties, since you've been on code red. You're now 77, 81. This is a massive improvement of your normal set. Now, if I had a 71, I would be catatonic   (Cari 27:00) You can even track your mood, the phone like this, and they're kicking my mood in I'm teasing. I'm teasing. So if you're unhappy with your life, it is your responsibility to change.  This mentality holds true for EVERYTHING in your life not just happiness. 4 Mainstream Lies Keeping You Fat

Today on Rebel Weight Loss and Lifestyle we are discussing 4 mainstream lies keeping you obese, or fat or overweight.  Whatever you want to call it we are going through 4 of those lies today. Lie #1 - "Well it's just I can't lose that baby weight" - If you just had a baby you do not need to be back to your normal weight immediately after you have a child but at some point it is time to get moving and get that weight off. Lie #2 - "Weight gain is a part of getting older and there's nothing you can do about it" - Age is just a number.  It doesn't have to be an issue and in Code Red we have had over 60,000 people achieve their goals and it all has nothing to do with age.  We have so many examples of proving this within Code Red. Lie #3 - "Well, you're overweight because that's just how you're built" -  I know there is frame size, small, medium, and large frame size for people but a bigger frame does not mean you should be overweight. Lie #4 - "Your obesity is genetic. You'll always be fat" - Genetics do play a role in your health and where fat might go but again.  You are not fat because of genetics.  You are not obese because of genetics.  You have to make a choice to working differently than those genetically related to you.   This was a fun one and I hope you all get a message that resonates with you and then make a change to not go with the mainstream lies! In today's episode we are sharing practical scenarios and practical situations of what would be a friend that you wouldn't want to have and what would a good friend say that you do want to keep around. I know we might get a few comments about this episode but this is so important when you are working to be better in life, better in health, a better spouse.  We all have people in life that are just not good for us in certain situations but we never talk about this subject. Do you have clear boundaries for everything in life? Do you have low confidence?  If you do, it will be harder to maintain your boundaries and say no to the things that do not fit your goals. So a good friend is one that respects your boundaries... Are you having conversations to set expectations of the day or the week or anything that you are trying to accomplish?  These conversation can really set the tone and allow your good friends to prove the respect that they have for you.
