This week I teach Julius about the game Coldwater Crown. This is a game in which you are competing in a fishing tournament to get the most trophy points. Like a modern dance competition, there are trophies available for just about anything you do. Come hear what someone that doesn't like fishing think about this game. Coldwater Crown (BGG, Bellwether Games)
Billy reflects on some of the new games he played in 2020, while Maggie muses on some of her old favourites. Discussion jumps from the earthly national parks in Parks (4:01) to space with Alien Frontiers (10:40). Sticking with the space theme, they move to discuss the co-operative trick taking game [wait, what?] called The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine (16:26) and then lessen the scope with Concordia (23:32) and Coldwater Crown (39:34). Old and new gems abound in this episode.

We talk about some games that we like with weird themes as well as talking about a few games with player elimination (a thing we normally do not like!) in this half and half episode. Once again, Jared is sick, and once again, a cat is screaming the entire time. We also talked about Japanese Kit-Kats for half of this episode, so make sure you check in at the 41 minute mark for that.

We welcome Liz from Beyond Solitaire and Jeremy from Jambalaya Plays Games back to the show! As we like to do when we have guests, we share about some games we completely adore, but which aren't getting the publicity they deserve. First, Jeremy tells us about Coldwater Crown (2:58), a worker placement style game with a fishing theme. The expansion for this game, The Sea Expansion, is currently live on Kickstarter. Next, Liz shares about something of a "grail" game for some gamers, Coffee Roaster (10:29). Jeremy then hops back in to discuss a cooperative deckbuilder from the designer of Terraforming Mars, After the Virus (18:13). For our discussion, we chat about getting started as a board game reviewer. We share about our first steps, building relationships with the community and with publishers, and also trying hard to keep the sense that we are gamers, as well. For anyone who has a ton of passion about the board gaming hobby and wants another outlet besides just playing a ton, we hope that we can give you some ideas.

Draft Mechanic Episode 47: Fields of Green v. Among the Stars; Coldwater Crown on tap; Honshu; Pocket Mars; Shahrazad I’ll be up front about this one - I’m sorely disappointed that Episode 47 doesn’t contain a single Star Trek reference. But now that I’ve got that off my chest, I’m very proud of what we put together here, including the debut of a new segment! In our new feature, Variants, we’re doing the compare and contrast treatment for Fields of Green and Among the Stars - two games with the same foundation that go in different directions, both from designer Vangelis Bagiartakis and published by Artipia/Stronghold Games. We get back on the boat with our on tap featured game Coldwater Crown, and also discuss recent plays of Honshu, Pocket Mars and Shahrazad.
