Welcome back to another episode of Puzzling Company! This week's episode is on Detective City Of Angels from Van Ryder Games! In this experience, you will become detectives working the streets of LA in the 1940's. You will work together or competitively to solve different cases. This game offers three different game modes: Sleuth (Co-Op) , Head To Head (Detectives Vs Chisel) , and Classic Mode (Competitive). This game was a lot of fun to play many different modes. On the show, we had our first live guest in studio Evan Derrick from Van Ryder Games, on to discuss the game and many other things! We hope you all enjoy the episode! Welcome to Die Alone: a Solo RPG Podcast! Each week I'll be playing a different solo roleplaying game and talking about my experiences the following episode. I'll also occasionally dabble in solo tabletop games and adventure gamebooks. I'll be looking at the games as a play experience, as a meditative and creative exercise and also looking at them from a designer and artist viewpoint. In Episode 10 of Die Alone, I talk about the Van Ryder Game: DETECTIVE: CITY OF ANGELSSet in the dark and violent world of 1940s Los Angeles, Detective: City of Angels is a game of mystery, deception, and investigation for 1–5 players. Most players will step into the shoes of LAPD homicide detectives, hungry for glory and willing to do whatever it takes to close a case, even if that means intimidating suspects, concealing evidence, and hiring snitches to rat on their fellow detectives. One player, however, will take on the role of The Chisel, whose only goal is to stall and misdirect the detectives at every turn using bluffing, manipulation, and (often) outright lies. The game includes separate, detailed casebooks for the detectives and The Chisel. Each crime is a puzzle that can unfold in a variety of ways. As the detectives turn the city upside down, uncovering fresh evidence and "hot" leads, hidden suspects may be revealed and new lines of questioning will open up, creating a rich, story-driven experience!I also discuss the projects I'm backing or watching now:FINAL GIRL Series 2 on Kickstarter:ACROSS A THOUSAND DEAD WORLDS on Kickstarter: andTHROUGH THE VOID - Itchfunding! Welcome to Episode 18 of The Last Standee Podcast! We begin with the usual Standee Catchup (0:50), where we learn about the gifts of mother earth and Rule 34 of boardgaming (DON'T google "rule 34". Just. Don't). When conversation gets to devolve into talking about the weather (that really happened), we move on to talk about The Networks (9:52) and by comparison about its streamlined two-player version The Rival Networks. Alexis then introduces us to Project L (25:29), while we learn about the extremely important difference between tetriminos and polyominos. Fen closes the episode by first talking briefly about Destinies(43:50), what it got right and what could be improved, then talking about Detective: City of Angels (55:32), which prove to be a proper boardgame about investigation (take that, famous smug consulting detective!).

To share in the joy of unboxing a new board game, not so much in theatrics, but in information, to be so narrative that it tells a story, that we go into the world that this box has, that we share that feeling and that function. This week Steve and Jules welcome Adrian to the podcast as the team recap the first Board Game Bracket showdown, and there is a lot to unpack from both sides of the contest. Who came out on top - Gloomhaven or Pandemic? And did that game win on both the BGBBQ contributors bracket and the popular vote? There are some unique games sizzling this week (and Steve proves that even a broken watch can be correct twice a day), and the topic of the week is Social Deduction Games. The team explores what sets these games apart from regular party games, and why lying, cheating, backstabbing and deception are just so much fun! In our regular Kickstarter segment, Adrian shares what he has backed recently, and everyone comes to the party in the ever-popular segment Swear An Oath. Jules fulfilled his backlog of oaths by playing both Photosynthesis and Quoridor, before swearing to replay Explorers of the North Sea (and upping the level of difficulty of the oath by increasing the player count to five). Steve brought Detective: City of Angels to the table with very little fanfare from his family, and has been inspired by Jules to play Kemet this week. Finally, Adrian swears his first oath by refining his code-breaking skills with Decrypto. It's the last day of the Kickstarter! If you haven't checked it out and you would like to support the show, check it out at www.TheSecretCabal.com/Kickstarter. Today the gang starts out by discussing the games we've been playing including Century: Golem Edition – Eastern Mountains, REEF, The Pursuit of Happiness, Detective City of Angels, Tichu, and Jurassic Park: Danger! Then we give a feature review of Quacks of Quedlinburg and look back at Space Gate Odyssey. Then, after Tony T's news segment the Founder's discuss building a strategy in a board game and cultivating that strategy long term. Quacks of Quedlinburg Overview 01:00:35, Quacks of Quedlinburg Review 01:05:49, Space Gate Odyssey Look Back 01:26:20, News with Tony T 01:31:34, Developing and Cultivating Strategy Discussion 02:37:25
The gloves are off this week as the Boardgame Bracket kicks off with a massive match-up: Gloomhaven vs Pandemic. Steve, Mitch, and Dan square off in defense of why one game is better than the other. They cover game mechanics, themes, replayability, components and, of course, fun! The conversation gets fierce, but ultimately we need your help to decide a winner. Cast your vote on our Facebook, Instagram or Discord, and join in the conversation on which game should advance to the next round. But first of all the boys discuss their Sizzling Games, before taking a deep dive into the topic of the week: Boardgame Bling - what is it, where can you get it, and is it worth it? And somehow they still find time to brag about fulfilling their oaths and set new ones. What a show!! Sizzling Games: Brass: Birmingham (1:20), King of Tokyo: Dark Edition (14:10), Awkward Guests (25:43) Weekly Topic: Boardgame Bling (43:00) Boardgame Bracket (1:03:41) Swear An Oath: (1:31:26) Steve successfully played Minecraft: Builders and Biomes, Dan completed the first campaign for Arkham Horror LCG, and Mitch got Dawn of the Zeds to the table.

Liz and Jeremy are back once again to talk about some bigger, meatier projects. Many of these were featured at the big show in Indy this past year, so into the wrap-up they go! Liz starts us off with Detective: City of Angels (10:16), the highly thematic case-solving game from Van Ryder Games that will unfortunately not hit retail due to scale and cost. Go ahead and check Kickstarter, as well as some conventions, if you want to get hold of this one. Next, Jeremy gives us some knowledge about Gugong (16:38), a mid-weight economic game set in the Forbidden City in China. Liz then jumps back in to share about a “dudes on a map”-type game with a slick auction system, Rurik: Dawn of Kiev (22;37). We wrap up with one of the most buzzed-about games at the whole con, the MOBA-style combat game with competitive, cooperative, and solo modes, Cloudspire from Chip Theory Games (31:36). Chris and Anthony are back this week to discuss the BGG.com top 100 board games. We get asked a lot which of these we've played and which we haven't, and whether we'd recommend one particular hot game or another. So, we figured, why not do them all! To kick things off, we ask everyone our question of the week, "What game has been sitting on your shelf unplayed the longest?" We got dozens of responses - apparently a lot of games are going unplayed out there! Next up, we dove into our acquisition disorders for the week. Anthony looked at Detective: City of Angels, and Chris looked at Small World: Sky Islands - another round of new content for the classic Days of Wonder game. At the table this week, ANThony reviews BrilliAnts, a game he's been filled with ANTicipation about for weeks. Chris discusses Fog of Love and The Terrifying Girl Disorder, both unique themes with clever takes on mechanics you may know from others in the genre. Finally, we dig into the first five of the BGG.com top 100 and let you know what we think - buy, play, dodge, or burn (hint, none of them are burned!). Question of the Week: 6:27 Acquisition Disorders: 9:33 BrilliANTs: 15:50 Fog of Love: 22:20 The Terrifying Girl Disorder: 28:10 BGG.com Top 100 (#100-51): 32:10 If you haven’t yet, be sure to connect with us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/boardgamersanonymous), Twitter (http://twitter.com/bgapodcast), and on our website (www.boardgamersanonymous.com). DESCRIPTION: This week, Erin and Ryan talk about the eclectic mix of recent games that made it to the table. Then they talk to Evan Derrick of Van Ryder Games about his new title Detective: City of Angels - a game adding a new take on an old genre! GUESTS: Evan Derrick RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (00:26): Xia: Legends of a Drift System by Far Off Games (BGG Link) Festival of Thousand Cats by Fukuroudou (BGG Link) AVES by Play With Us Design (BGG Link) FEATURED TOPIC - (18:51): In this episode's interview, we talk Detective: City of Angels with designer Evan Derrick, which has recently launched on Kickstarter. The game is a thematic take on noir…which means Erin goes on an L.A. Noire tangent almost immediately. No but really, the conversation covers Detective: City of Angels and what makes it so different compared to other one-and-done narrative-driven games, but they also discuss the role of noir in the current political climate, the way that designers balance difficulty for players of all skill levels, and how hard it is to drive in LA. PLUGS - (59:59): We’re raffling off a copy of Major General to a lucky Patreon backer. Consider donating today! As always, Cardboard Republic YouTube videos, Instagram pictures, and the BGG Guild are still ongoing. Subscribe to one or two - or all of them if you really love us. You do really love us, right?
