February 1, 2022 Let me see about keeping this going. It's been a long while since I had anything approaching a regular posting schedule. No promises, but for my own sake I'd like to (re)start boardgaming and podcasting a little more often... Opener: Five Games For Doomsday podcast As I explained in the previous episode, I'm not yet living in a post-pandemic world. None of us are. Things have not gone back to normal. Not even "the new normal." At least, I hope not--I hope things can get a bit better, more stable, and more social than they are for me at the moment. My boardgaming hobby is therefore in a hybrid state. Sort of like how we talk about "hybrid meetings" at my work where some people are in the office, but most are at home on their screens--my boardgaming is a mix. Much of it is still with friends (and some random people) on sites like BoardgameArena, Yucata.de, and Brettspielwelt. Other times just two or three of us manage to meet in-person for a real game night over a table, with drinks & snacks. I want the latter to take over my hobby again, but we aren't quite there yet. Consequently, the games I discuss are a blend of ones played with friends across a table, and others played with friends on a screen. As always, I have thoughts, opinions, and questions about the games regardless of the medium. My main thoughts are about The Adventures of Robin Hood, the Spiel des Jahres nominee from last year (in the podcast I mistakenly say Kennerspiel nominee). The story of Robin Hood is ok, I suppose, but what impresses me is the physical gameplay design of this one. I'm sure there are many great examples of this concept, but I struggled to find a good description or list anywhere. I don't just mean the bits, and I definitely don't mean sculpted miniatures (thankfully, this game doesn't have those). No, I mean gameplay that relates to the physical act of manipulating the boardgame as an object. Dexterity games do this, but they're in a different category. I mean strategy games that do this. I'd love to find more examples. Images by Tobias Franke & Henk Rolleman Surprising to me, thoughts about this game leaked over into thoughts about solo boardgaming in general--why I don't like it, even though I love solo wargaming. Next I play pop psychologist on myself to connect this feeling about solo boardgames to my waning interest in fiction...if I'm consuming it alone. Nonfiction is my solo experience, while I want to enjoy fictional stories/shows/games with friends & family. Other games discussed are Isle of Cats, Bosk, So Clover!, and LaCorsa. Applying the Bible

When Peter denied Jesus 3 times, he went away and wept bitterly. We really don't see much of Peter until after Jesus' resurrection though. The first two times Peter saw Jesus, it was when He appeared to the disciples from behind a locked door. In that first appearing, Jesus said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:21-22) and in the second appearing He addressed Thomas' doubt directly. I don't know about you, but if I were Peter, the thing that would come into my mind when Jesus first appeared would be a mix of joy in seeing Him alive and a sorrowful repentance over denying Him 3 times before His death, but we don't see that addressed here. Then when Jesus appeared a second time and addressed Thomas' shortcoming of doubt, I would think my issue of denial would be next, but we don't see that addressed here either. We don't even see Peter assert himself the way he usually did before Jesus was crucified. It wasn't until the next appearing when Jesus comes to the Sea of Tiberias as Peter and some disciples had been fishing all night, that we see Peter jump into the water and swim to Jesus when John told him it was Jesus standing on the shore. The next thing we see is this interaction between Jesus and Peter after they had finished having breakfast. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him a third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” (John 21:15-17) On first reading, it is understandable why Peter was grieved that Jesus asked him if he loved Him a third time, yet when looking even deeper, we see that Jesus was indeed being loving by meeting Peter where he was at that moment. It's important to know that in the Greek, the language the New Testament was written in, there are different words used for love. In English we have one word and we use it interchangeably to be interpreted according to context. However, we don't love our favorite food the way we love our family, friends, or spouse. So in that sense, the English language falls short when it comes to the word “love”. The Greek, on the other hand, has 4 words for love to represent familial love, brotherly love, spousal intimacy love, and the unconditional and sacrificial love of God. Understanding the Greek: In this section of Scripture, both brotherly love (phileō) and the unconditional and sacrificial love of God (agapaō) are used. (On a quick side note: we often hear this love described as Agape love, and this is because agapaō is the root word that agape, or Agape as it's said in English, is derived from) When Jesus asked Peter the first time, He asked, “Do you agapaō me?” and Peter replied, “You know that I phileō you.” When Jesus asked Peter the second time, He asked, “Do you agapaō me?” and Peter replied, “You know that I phileō you.” When Jesus asked Peter the third time, He instead asked, “Do you phileō me? And Peter replied, “You know that I phileō you.” We see that Peter is honest in his reply that while Jesus is asking if Peter loves Him unconditionally and sacrificially, at that moment the love that Peter could honestly profess was a brotherly love. Yet, the third time, Jesus met him where he was at and asked if he had brotherly love for Him. Three times Peter had denied, and three times he professes his brotherly love for Jesus. Further on in this encounter, Jesus tells Peter that he will indeed be martyred for His sake to glorify God, and then Jesus ends that encounter by saying, “Follow me.” While it did cause grief in Peter because Jesus asked him 3 times, it was also encouragement from Jesus, because while in that moment of time Peter could only honestly profess to have a brotherly love for Jesus, he would eventually grow in his unconditional and sacrificial love FOR God by abiding IN God. I would also be remiss if I don't mention the second part of Jesus' interaction, which was regarding the tending of His sheep. The first time Jesus says, “Feed my lambs”, it is boskō egō arnion in the Greek. The second time Jesus says, “Tend my sheep”, it is poimainō egō probation in the Greek. The third time Jesus says, Feed my sheep”, it is boskō egō probation in the Greek. This is important because Jesus was not only stating the importance by repeating Himself, but He was including how to view His followers and care for them. Here is what those Greek words mean: Boskō – to pasture, fodder/feed, graze Arnion – lambkin, a little lamb Poimainō – to tend as a shepherd to, feed, rule Probation – sheep, sheepfold Jesus views us as His lambs, some are little and some are bigger, which speaks to our spiritual maturity, but we all need to be fed. Now as far as it was speaking to Peter, who would later take on the roll of a pastor/shepherd in the Jewish community of those who would come to believe in Jesus Christ as Messiah, it also speaks to the heart of God towards us and how we should view one another. If we are viewing our brothers and sisters in Christ in any way other than how God sees them, then we're in the wrong and we're not showing that agapaō love of God. When Jesus gave the new command in John 13:34-35 to love one another as He has loved us and that people will know we're His disciples if we have love for one another, He uses the word agapaō in reference to the love He has and the love He expects from us towards one another. We cannot show that agapaō love of God if we're not abiding in Him, because we cannot give what we are not receiving. At best, we'll peak at phileō brotherly love, which while sweet, still falls short of what God intends for us. If you have been or still are in the place Peter found himself, whether in moments of weakness or denial or only able to offer brotherly love, heed the words of Jesus and follow Him, abiding in Him the vine, whom apart from you can do nothing (John 15). And may you, when asked by our Lord Jesus, “Do you agapaō me?”, be able to answer with full confidence, “Yes Lord, I agapaō You!”

Some of Sen's games: Junk Art, Akotiri, and Jiangshi: Blood in the Banquet Hall. Some of Erica's games: Bosk, Roar: King of the Pride, Kodama 3D, Scott Pilgrim Miniatures The World, Steven Universe: Beach-A-Palooza, and the forthcoming Rat Queens. Here's Sen's appearance on Ludology 236 - Role With It. 2m11s: The hobby "classics": Catan, Carcassonne. The new hotness as of this recording: Bonfire, Carnegie (which is so hot, it's not even out yet...).  2m55s: More info about PSI, the sales agent Gil (and many other publishers) use to sell their games to publishers. 4m11s: Yep. 4m36s: Wingspan, Terraforming Mars, Codenames 11m15s: Phoenix Games and Mox Boarding House in Seattle. It's a better example. 44m24s: The idea of affordances and signifiers from a design standpoint was popularized by Donald Norman in his book The Design of Everyday Things. This subject came up when we chatted with game designer and graphic designer Daniel Solis in Ludology 204 - The Eyes Have It. 45m11s: Kingdom Builder 47m39s: Seven Wonders 50m01s: The story of Lizzie Magie, Charles Darrow, and the way The Landlord's Game eventually became Monopoly is worth knowing about. The Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game also had components exclusive to Target. 1h04m23s: Scott is referring to the mechanism in each game in the Betrayal family of games, in which the game assigns one player to turn against the other players in one of dozens of wildly different scenarios. 1h08m31s: We discussed complexity in Ludology 238 - Unraveling Complexity. 1h11m33s: Gil likes to occasionally return to this lukewarm review of Catan from 1998, complaining about game length, runaway leader, and balance issues. The more things change... 1h12m13s: Here's Emma's talk for the Tabletop Mentorship Program about playtesting! 1h13m48s: More info about the AEG Pitch Project.

This is Andrew Bieber, The Cycling Certified Cicerone. There is no new episode this week, instead just a quick announcement. From here on out, we’ll be switching the posting schedule from every Friday to every other Wednesday. Switching to a midweek release day is an easy choice - it will make sure you get your WBT right when you want it - in time for your commute, workday lunch, or evening bike ride, plus if I am a little tardy with posting the new episode, you don’t need to wait till Monday to get your brewery fix. Also, responding to other feedback, we’ll be shortening the episodes a bit. Our interviews tend to get a bit carried away these days and an hour or more long episode can’t quite be knocked out in a single commute, so expect to see more 30-45 minute episodes. If you are now lamenting that you don’t get your episode this week, well fear not because I have another exciting announcement! WBT has made the move to Patreon. If you don’t know, Patreon is a crowdfunding platform where fans of Washington Beer Talk can get access to extra episodes including extended interviews and multipart episodes, Cycling Cicerone swag, and other great perks like episode shout outs. This week, exclusively for patrons, is part 2 of my discussion with Will from Bosk where we talk shit on beer snobs and find out which breweries he’d marry, bang, and kill. This episode is just for those who become patrons of the show over at patreon.com/cyclingcicerone. If you want to get access to a bonus episode every other week, and maybe score a shirt, a pint glass, or more, go check out patreon.com/cyclingcicerone. Thanks for listening to Washington Beer Talk. I’ll be back next Wednesday with Kauai Beer Company. And that one is for everyone!

Bosk has made an interesting Gamble. They have opened a production scale brewery in a beer market that is arguably running out of room and in addition to that, they are choosing to focus on lager beer! Will Lefevre is the head brewer here at Bosk and he’s been given free reign to brew how and what he wants… more or less. We talk about what it’s like getting a gig like that, what it was like before when he worked at Lagunitas (now Heineken), and what is on the road ahead.

Do tego Pixar (i ten długo- i ten krótkometrażowy), kilka oczekiwanych staroci, odrobina Szekspira, Penelope Cruz i gotowanie wody w polskim serialu.

List II                                   Cremona, 4  styczeń  1531 r.            Do Wielce Szanownego Pana Bartolomeo Ferrariego i Pana Giacomo Antoniego Morigii, moich Czcigodnych Braci w  Chrystusie.   W Mediolanie. Wstęp Bartolomeo Maria Ferrari (1499-1544) i Giacomo Maria Antonio Morigia (1497-1546) byli mediolańskimi szlachcicami, którzy po różnych doświadczeniach życiowych dołączyli do Antoniego Marii Zaccarii pomagając mu w zorganizowaniu nowej rodziny zakonnej różnie nazywanej: Synowie św. Pawła, Księża św. Pawła lub po prostu Barnabici.              W wieku dwóch lat Bartolomeo stracił obydwoje rodziców, a wkrótce potem starszego brata. Wysoki i przystojny zyskał reputację najlepiej ubranego mężczyzny w Mediolanie i przydomek  „Morigia elegant”. Antoni Maria Zaccaria spotkał Bartolomeo M. Ferrari i Giacomo M. Morigia w wyżej wspomnianym Oratorium w drugiej połowie 1531 r. To im Antoni Maria przedstawił swoje podglądy na temat pilnej potrzeby odnowy chrześcijańskiej. W 1532 r. Można by wskazać inną przyczynę ludzkiej niestałości, ale nam to wystarczy. Och, jacy jesteśmy żałośni! Zamierzając czynić dobro, dopuszczamy się wielkiej niestałości i wahania, czego nie powinniśmy czynić, by unikać zła. Ilekroć uświadamiam sobie od wielu lat panujący w mej duszy chaos - popadam w zadumę.  Najdrożsi, gdybym przemyślał poważnie to zło, które bierze początek z niezdecydowania, to dawno - jestem pewien - wypleniłbym go z mej duszy. Polega ona na wznoszeniu myśli do Boga z błaganiem, aby On udzielił daru rady. Pozwólcie mi to wyjaśnić. Jeśli spotka Cię coś nieprzewidzianego i niespodziewanego, to [sytuacja ta] wymaga, by dokonać wyboru, wówczas wznośmy nasze umysły do Boga prosząc Go, aby nas natchnął, co mamy czynić.  Idąc za natchnieniem Ducha świętego - nie zbłądzimy. Druga droga, polega na poszukiwaniu kierownika duchowego – oczywiście wtedy, kiedy dysponujemy czasem i możliwościami - by prosić go o radę i postępować według jego zaleceń. Fra Bono[13] prosi go i Was obu o modlitwę za Niego. Módlcie się również za mnie. Cremona, 4  styczeń  1531 r.                          Wasz oddany brat w Jezusie Chrystusie,                           Antoni M. Zaccaria, kapłan ________________ NOTES: [1] Por. 1 Kor  2,10. [2] Por.  Mich  6, 8. [3] Rz 12, 11. [4] 2 P 1, 10. wlg. „przez dobre  uczynki”. [5] Por. Łk  9,60. [6] Łk  9,60. [7] Por.  Mt  4, 18.  [8] Por.  Flp  2, 8. [9] Por.  Hbr 12, 2. [10] Do zidentyfikowania tytułu wspomnianej książki mogą posłużyć trzy następujące okoliczności. [11] Nieznany. [12] Ksiądz z Cremony. [13] Zob. nota. 16 z Listu I
