Cassie and Laura continue our Arabian Nights era with book one in the Once Upon a Time series from Simon Pulse -- The Storyteller's Daughter by Cameron Dokey. There's a bit more chatter up top in this episode than usual, so if you want to get straight to the discussion and bypass Toddler Tales and the history of the Once Upon a Time series, skip to 10:55!Laura and Cassie go off on several tangents during this discussion, but along the way, we do touch on how this novel captures the oral tradition feel inherent to Shahrazad, tricks for behavior that work on toddlers as well as spoiled kings, and how quickly public opinion can change, for better and for worse.Join our community! It's time to bid another farewell to our second (riches to) rags to riches girlie and introduce ourselves to the ultimate storyteller Shahrazad, in any of the many many ways her name has been spelled. Cassie and Matt start us off with our final thoughts on The Goose Girl, including our ideas for how we would like to retell the story ourselves and how easy it is for Cassie to shoehorn Anonymous Penpals into any story. Then Cassie and Laura begin a journey into a new story, 1001 Nights, also known as The Arabian Nights. We talk through the plot of the story and the many questions it brings up, then we reveal the criteria we'll be using and which retellings we'll be talking about throughout the month.Join our community! On last week's podcast and the one a few before that, and in a post, Shaun and I talked a bit about plot structures and narrative structures and how here in the U.S. we think of these usually (not always!) as pretty linear, and pretty much in a three-act framework (think beginning, middle, end) with rising stakes and drama as you go along. This is not the only way to write. I am very much a product of the U.S. culture. And I'm going to talk a tiny bit in the next couple weeks about different forms/shapes of storytelling, but again . . . I am a student of this culture's structures. I am not an expert at other structures. I adore them though. I'm going to be providing links. And hopefully by quickly talking about some of them, you might go off and explore and adore, too. Maybe even get an epiphany for your own story? So, another kind of storytelling is Middle Eastern and it's  Frame Story in our language. And it's so cool. Basically, as the Novelsmithy explains "many types of stories, characters, and symbols are woven together into a larger tale. "One Thousand And One Nights is the most famous example of this. In this story, Shahrazad tells story after story to the Sultan in order to keep him from killing her. Her stories include a variety of complex narratives, different characters, conflicts, genres, and morals. There are even frame stories within the larger frame story! "Characteristics of Middle Eastern Storytelling: Outer 'frame story' tying multiple stories together Multiple characters and narratives Variety of genres, fantasy, and high action." It's very influenced by The Qur'an. Gulf News writes, "One of the most revered traditions of oral storytelling is the hakawati. As intricate and complex as a weaving pattern, this motif-rich narrative style darts in and out of stories, offering unending drama where the storyteller begins one tale, deftly leaves it mid-way to pick up another and then has a third story emerging from a subplot of the first and so on. All this is done using the tools of allegory, folklore, satire, music and a visual spectacle of grand sweeping gestures and facial expressions to finally create an enthralling experience for his listeners." There's a great piece about frame stories here. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Pogie's like "hey dude, I live my style and life in the frame story style of way. It always comes back to me. I'll always be doing something. I'll see a cat and I'll change my storyline." And that keeps happening. It's all about multiple stories in a brain. WRITING EXERCISE Do the Forrest Gump. Find a setting like a park bench and tell the stories that make a life. OR at least outline it. Overview Confessions of a Knight Errant is a comedic, picaresque novel in the tradition of Don Quixote with a flamboyant cast of characters. Dr. Gary Watson is the picaro, a radical environmentalist and wannabe novelist who has been accused of masterminding a computer hack that wiped out the files of a major publishing company. His Sancho Panza is Kharalombos, a fat, gluttonous Greek dancing teacher, who is wanted by the secret police for cavorting with the daughter of the Big Man of Egypt. Self-preservation necessitates a hurried journey to the refuge of a girls' camp in rural Texas. Then a body turns up nearby that is connected to Middle East antiquities, and they are on the run once more. Gretchen McCullough was raised in Harlingen Texas. After graduating from Brown University in 1984, she taught in Egypt, Turkey and Japan. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Alabama and was awarded a teaching Fulbright to Syria from 1997-1999. Her stories, essays and reviews have appeared in The Barcelona Review, Archipelago, National Public Radio, Story South, Guernica, The Common, The Millions, and the LA Review of Books. Translations in English and Arabic have been published in: Nizwa, Banipal, Brooklyn Rail in Translation, World Literature Today and Washington Square Review with Mohamed Metwalli. Her bi-lingual book of short stories in English and Arabic, Three Stories from Cairo, translated with Mohamed Metwalli was published in July 2011 by AFAQ Publishing House, Cairo. A collection of short stories about expatriate life in Cairo, Shahrazad's Tooth, was also published by AFAQ in 2013. Currently, she is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Rhetoric and Composition at the American University in Cairo. Book Website http://www.gretchenmccullough.wix.com/gretchenmccullough Favorites YouTube https://youtu.be/3ff8O98jt3E Transcript Stephen: So today on Discovered Word Smith I have Gretchen McCullough and you may notice if you're on YouTube watching the episode that there's no video because Gretchen is not. Anywhere in this hemisphere of where I'm at or at least I should say this continent. So we had a bit of a spotty connection and we turned off video to make sure we could hear everything. So Gretchen, welcome. How are you doing today? I'm Gretchen: doing great. Thanks for having me on your show. Stephen: Yeah. And I'm excited. So let's jump right into that before we start talking about your book. Tell us a little bit about you. And where you are at the moment. Gretchen: I'm sitting in my bedroom and it's dark outside. It's quite noisy. I live in a really busy part of Cairo. And yeah. That's where I am. It's across the Nile from Tahrir Square where a lot of Americans probably are familiar with Tahrir Square because of the uprising. It's not that far from the square. It's a huge island called Zamalek. And you can walk everywhere in this area. You don't really need a car. It's a neat burrow. There are lots of coffee shops. Yeah. Stephen: Nice. What, why what brought you to Cairo? Gretchen: It's a long odyssey. I taught in Egypt in the 1980s and then I taught in Turkey and then I taught in Japan. And then I went and got an MFA from the university of Alabama. And I had a Fulbright in Syria in 1997 to 99. And. I went back to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for a year and a friend of mine said, there's a job in Cairo. You're perfect. Why don't you apply? And I did. And I got the job at the American university in Cairo in 2000. And I've been here ever since. Stephen: Gretchen, where are you originally from? Gretchen: I'm originally from Harlingen, Texas. It's called the Rio Grande Valley. It's near the Mexican border, near Brownsville. It's the very tip of Texas. That's where I grew up. I'm from a very small town. Stephen: Big change. Gretchen: Yes. I wanted to get out of that town in 1980 and I didn't realize how far I would go.

(Volume 13) Arabian Nights - The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night by Anonymous audiobook. This is a collection of stories collected over thousands of years by various authors, translators, and scholars. They are an amalgam of mythology and folk tales from the Indian sub-continent, Persia, and Arabia. No original manuscript has ever been found for the collection, but several versions date the collection's genesis to somewhere between AD 800 and 900. The stories are wound together under the device of a long series of cliff-hangers told by Shahrazad to her husband to prevent him from executing her. In translating the Nights, R. F. Burton attempted to invent an English equivalent of medieval Arabic. In doing so, he drew upon Chaucerian English, Elizabethan English, and the 1653 English translation by Sir Thomas Urquhart of the first three books of Rabelais's Gargantua and Pantagruel (1532-1546). (Volume 3) Arabian Nights - The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night by Anonymous audiobook. This is a collection of stories collected over thousands of years by various authors, translators and scholars. The are an amalgam of mythology and folk tales from the Indian sub-continent, Persia, and Arabia. No original manuscript has ever been found for the collection, but several versions date the collection's genesis to somewhere between AD 800-900. The stories are wound together under the device of a long series of cliff-hangers told by Shahrazad to her husband Shahryar, to prevent him from executing her. Many tales that have become independently famous come from the Book, among them Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and the voyages of Sinbad the Sailor. This collection comes from the third of sixteen volumes translated by Burton. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

King Shahriyar and his brother King Shahzaman of India and China suspect their suffering to be unique in this world. Their wives have slept with other men, and this drives them to grief, to madness—Shahzaman skewers his wife and her lover. Shahriyar begins to take a new bride each night, only to have her killed the next morning. Parents grieve; the kingdom darkens. Eventually, Shahrazad, the vizier's daughter, comes up with a plan. She offers herself as a bride, but holds Shahriyar's attention, night after night, with stories that end on a cliffhanger. With every dawn, the king decides to let her live, burning to know what comes next. This goes on for one thousand and one nights, hence the name of the famous middle eastern folk tale collection. Here comes the good news: This 8-14 century compilation created in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age was recently re-translated in a new Norton edition by the British Syrian poet Yasmine Seale in 2021. Joining us today is its editor Dr. Paulo Lemos Horta, associate professor of literature at New York University Abu Dhabi. Professor Horta is also the author of Marvelous Thieves: Secret Authors of the Arabian Nights. Recommended Reading:The Annotated Arabian Nights: Tales from 1001 NightsJorge Luis Borges, “The Translators of The Thousand and One Nights”—“One Thousand and One Nights”This podcast is sponsored by Riverside, the most efficient platform for video recording and editing for podcasters.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! 1. Should we filter and be mindful of how we apply the perspectives of elders that are deemed well respected voices to our lives? 2. Are we failing to acknowledge the mishandling of shared wisdom and insight from some elders in the black community? 3. Have we abused the teachings of some elders to manipulate each other in the black community? (Specifically in intimate relationships) 4. Are black men confusing black women addressing each other with compassion as failing to hold other black women accountable? (Does accountability have to be packaged in a certain tone and with a look to be received?) 5. Are elders above correction and being held accountable for neglecting to maintain balance in their guidance?

With the world on lockdown and all Magic tournaments cancelled, we are taking you out of the current reality and onto a cruise through the history of Legacy. Together with our guests Marius "MariusOfTheMoon" Hausmann we specifically explore the bans of the years 2004-2011. I did a ton of research on this episode to provide you with some super interesting tidbits and little-known facts about these bannings. While doing so I found in particularly interesting to analyze Wizards of the Coast's historic explanations about their decisions, which played a significant part in establishing the formation of Legacy as we know it today. With all our hosts being contemporaries of all these banned cards, we discuss our experiences with the respective cards at the times and how we feel about the necessity of their bans.
