The Duke Basketball Roundup is back with Episode 531, with Jason and Donald getting us ready for the start of Duke Blue Devils Football. We start with some comments on the tragedy that occurred at UNC on Monday. Our hearts are with the family and friends of the faculty member who was killed. UNC may be our rivals on the court or field, but they are our neighbors, co-workers, friends and family in the game of life, and we stand with them. We also wanted to announce that we have moved the show to a new network: Fans First Sports Network! We're hoping this move will be a beneficial one as we reunite with several podcasts from the SB Nation Podcast era, and we're excited about all the possibilities! We get into Duke Football, as they host the Clemson Tigers in a huge game to open up the season on Monday night. We discuss what makes Clemson really good and why Duke has a better chance than most think of pulling off the upset and otherwise turning some heads with their play. After the break, The Brotherhood Podcast had a great episode featuring the freshman class for Duke Basketball. We marvel at how tight knit the players are and how they seem to really enjoy being around each other. It's a fun interview done by Ryan Young, so check it out! Finally, we give Johnny Dawkins and Coach K their flowers, as they are both inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame. We reflect on their career and how it's awesome that the two of them get to enter the Hall together. Make sure you're following us! He didn't make varsity on his high school basketball team in Batavia, Illinois until he was a junior. A huge growth spurt from 5'11” to 6'8' helped, as did his high school coach who took the time to help make Dan Issel a future icon at the University of Kentucky, the ABA and the NBA. Dan still holds the record as the all-time leading scorer at Kentucky, a record he set in 1970 that will likely never be broken. After college Dan played in the ABA and set the league on fire as the 1971 ABA Rookie of the Year and scoring champ, the 1972 ABA All Star Game MVP, ABA Champion in 1975 and 6-time ABA All-Star. After he was sold (yes sold) to the Nuggets and the ABA & NBA merged, Dan added another All-Star appearance to his name as a member of the NBA. His #44 jersey is one of 7 retired Nuggets jerseys. After his playing days were over, Dan had two stints coaching the Nuggets, both of which ended with resignations. In retirement, Dan is now enjoying life in the Denver area with wife of over 50 years, Cheri, his two adult children and 5 grandchildren. He also co-hosts a radio show on ESPN Radio in Louisville. Dan is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the College Basketball Hall of Fame and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.

WbW with Dan Dakich and the late great Mr. Jerry Harkness. 03/27/2018-The Loyola Ramblers were heading to the Final Four and Ramblers 1963 Champion and Guard with the Indiana Pacers back in the ABA days joined DD to talk about what it was like when he grew up playing basketball at Rucker Park, the NBA vs ABA, his National Championship win in 1963 and of course why this 2018 FF team was so special. Mr. Jerry Harkness told a story that you wouldn't even believe! At the time in HS, he didn't even think he was good enough for the team. Someone came up to him at the local YMCA and said hey, you are pretty good. Went out for the team and made it. Wait until you hear who that person was at the YMCA that day. Talk about being inspired. More importantly, Mr. Harkness was a pioneer leader for civil rights and equality. He was the first black sportscaster in Indianapolis and member of the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Jerry was also the first African-American fundraiser for the United Way, and helped found both Indiana Black Expo and the 100 Black Men in Indianapolis. Life after basketball was dedicated to helping others in the community. RIP to Mr. Jerry Harkness See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
I can see clearly now the rain is gone.I can see all obstacles in my way.Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind. It's gonna be a bright (bright)Bright (bright) sunshiny day.-Jimmy CliffThe Freethinkers | There are exceptions to every rule, so our two guests aren't rivals, but kindred spirits who are living for that “bright (bright) sunshiny day! Two great athletes as well as two of the most outspoken athletes of their time. They're freethinkers who speak to everything in the world. Neither is shy to express themselves, they've been outspoken and even controversial at times. The FreethinkersBill Walton is a two-time NBA Champion and a two-time NCAA Champion. He played college basketball at UCLA for legendary coach John Wooden and was the National College Player of the Year three times, from 1972-1974. In addition to those two NCAA titles in 1972 and 1973, including an amazing 88-game winning streak, he was also the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player in those years as well. He won the NBA title in 1977 with the Portland Trailblazers and in 1986 with the Boston Celtics. He was the NBA Finals MVP in 1977 and the league's Most Valuable Player in 1978. These incredible accomplishments have landed him in both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as well as the College Basketball Hall of Fame. However, with all these feats, he might be best known as the biggest Grateful Dead fan on the planet.Speaking of planets, Bill “Spaceman” Lee had a 14-year major league baseball career with the Boston Red Sox and the Montreal Expos. He was an all-star in 1973 and in 2008 was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame. Bill played college baseball at USC under legendary coach Rod Dedeaux when they won the 1968 College World Series. He then was drafted by the Red Sox in the 22nd round of the 1968 draft. Bill began his career mostly as a relief pitcher, but then went on to become a starter in two games in the 1975 World Series. However, his career took a turn for the worse in May of 1976, as he got injured in a huge brawl with the Yankees and suffered a torn ligament in his left pitching shoulder. But bill's dynamic personality would not be curtailed and his tremendous popularity as the “Spaceman” continued even after his playing days in books and films. So, fasten your seat belts as two planets are about to collide and hopefully you can see clearly again once you hear these freethinkers' words of wisdom…See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
