We have some very good family cooperative games for you this week. The first is My First Castle Panic (3:45), the adaptation of Castle Panic that is excellent for your three year old! For the older kids, we share next about Zoo Break (7:21), a family game about recapturing escaping zoo animals with some excellent moments of thematic integration? Finally, we get to one of the big releases from early 2019 - Comanauts (16:04). For our discussion topic, we're revisiting a conversation Jason had with Dr. Max Davie, a specialist in child psychology, that was posted on the Dice Tower main YouTube channel a few months ago. We chat about how to use games to help kids heal, how to adjust games so that we can get them gaing with us as adults, and other aspects of gaming with kids. Adam, Ryan and Chad take a few moments to discuss the role of narrative and story in modern board games. Whether it's a static story or a collection of random events, storywriting has taken more of a prominent role in board game design. We discuss if we think the tales written in-between the mechanics actually add anything to a game's value, and highlight a few good and not-so-good examples in the hobby. We close the show with a few games we've been playing lately, including Between Two Castles of Mad King Ludwig, Gloomhaven, Treasure Island, Just One, Ultimate Werewolf Legacy, Comanauts, and more!

Last year, we went to PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia, where we had a lot of fun, played a lot of games, and gathered clips from various attendees who spoke about the show. This year, we have two episodes for you! More games, more clips, and more coverage of the only convention that Jason gets to go to all year (hooray for newborns...). We start things off with two first impressions of some good games - with some more plays, we might get back to these for some proper reviews. First, Anthony and Chris from Board Gamers Anonymous join Jason for his first play of Teotihuacan: City of Gods (3:42), a Euro worker placement game where you get to construct your own pyramid out of tiles and... yes... score points. After that, Jason ran for cover from all the Euro goodness and found himself demoing The Reckoners (16:25), a cooperative dice rolling superhero game based on a series of novels by Brandon Sanderson. Designer Brett Sobol was good enough to give us his thoughts on his design goals for player experience here. For our sole proper review this episode, we take a look at Star Realms: Frontiers (25:50), the second full expansion for Star Realms. We take a particular look at the solo-coop space battle modules that this expansion includes, as well as the special, player-specific Legendary Commander packs which are sold separately. Finally, Jason spoke with one of the designers, Rob Dougherty, about the mechanical differences between Star Realms and Hero Realms. Finally, we get to some hot previews! We hear from the designers and publishers of 1001 Odysseys (39:18), The Everrain (49:55), and Comanauts (57:04). All three of these promise storytelling and adventure in their gameplay, so you know Jason will be all over these when they release!

Recorded in War Room Studios - Albuquerque, NM : 8/17/18 This episode brought to you by Inside Up Games, Tasty Minstrel Games & Meeple Realty. We are very late with this episode thanks to a rather vicious Ransomware attack on War Room Studios. Tune in for ALL the dirt on how we contracted this nasty bug, and laugh away at the misery that the Brothers have endured while trying to get our systems back up and running. Brandon reports back from Gen Con 2018 with news on all the exciting new games, including War Chest, Root, Everdell, Keyforge, Orbis, Forbidden Sky, Comanauts, Tidal Blades, Gen7 and many more. No episode of Brawling Brothers would be complete without food talk: We'll tell you a few of the very best places to eat in Indianapolis (including the legendary St. Elmo Steak House).
