We find out why Fireside Games' co-op boardgame Castle Panic remains a masterpiece and how its wonderfully welcoming all-ages version My First Castle Panic brings in younger players while remaining entertaining for adults. Then a look at why the sheer amount of planning for a weekend playing Avalon Hill's Civilization has been an early part of the overall joy of running this epic length event game. And the reasons why 100 years of Nosferatu has done nothing to take the sting out of the vampire's bite. All that, and Nora going door-to-door, on Ep216. 00:00 - Two Tuna Buses in a row, plus our favourite bedtime readers 08:48 - Nosferatu 26:01 - Preparing for Civilization 44:29 - Castle Panic and My First Castle Panic On this episode were Kris (@DigitalStrider) and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). Our Spotify Playlist brings together lots of great thematic music inspired by the stuff we talk about. It doesn't skew how we think about that thing, and we don't receive compensation for anything we discuss, but we thought you might like to know this is the case.
This week we look back at a classic co-op game, Castle Panic. Monsters have decided to attach your castle in a clearing surrounded by dangerous woods. Waves of monsters charge the castle. Fortunately, the clever design makes it hard for the monsters to get at your castle and your highly trained warriors (knights, archers and fighters defend the castle), each specializing in combat on a certain type of terrain. This is a pretty simple and accessible tower defense game that has had a relatively recent art upgrade and continues to be fun, if a bit simple. * Castle Panic (BGG, Fireside games)
I love a good game with an atmospheric setting. I want to feel the cold as my meeples climb up the mountain, hear the bees as I place my apple tree hexes in my cider orchard, smell the smoke and the grease when my trains operate or see the next station that my underground train enters. A game that whisks you away and fully immerses you in another world for an hour or two or three is truly awesome. In this article, I want to look at a few that do it for me. I always used to be very much a competitive player. Pitting my wit against other people was my thing. I would usually lose games and still do, but it was always a lot of fun. Cooperative games really only came into my life when our daughter was young enough to play games with us that weren't just roll-and-move. I remember our first game of Forbidden Island, which we all really enjoyed and played many times since. So in this article, I want to explore why cooperative games have become so popular in recent years. "Troll!" came the shout from the battlements. "Where?!" we shouted back. "Southeast!" was the reply. Darn it. We didn't have any archers defending our fortress in that direction. It was fortunate that we still had time before we had to deal with the next wave of attackers. We were already in over our heads fending off orcs and goblins at the northern end of the bastion. Things were slowly becoming too chaotic. It was a real Castle Panic by Justin De Witt from Fireside Games. Sometimes expansions help breathe new life into games, other times they make a game actually playable. Other times they just add some cool new bling to the game!
When it comes to writing blurbs for our podcast episodes sometimes the muse graces us with whimsical descriptive powers and other times… well… Today I thought I would get a little more technical. Some clever person over on Board Game Geek created a poll on how much expansions improve or harm the base game and ‘abracadabra’ (that felt appropriate seeing as how we are taking about wizards) the 50 best game expansions of all time were identified. The Wizards Tower is the most popular expansion for Castle Panic and is also ranked 12 on the list of best game expansions with 80% of voters considering it an excellent expansion. Listen in to hear how it changes the base game and what we think of this expansion in the latest episode of All Mana of Things. Recorded from War Room Studios in Albuquerque, NM : 10/10/17 This episode brought to you by Tasty Minstrel Games, BoardGameTables.com, Arcane Wonders & Meeple Realty. Brandon has a little issue with a round vegetable, and Josh takes great joy in his misery. Josh pays the piper by canceling "THEN" (bets are bad, kids.). Interviews with Lance "Undead Viking" Myxter from Tasty Minstrel Games and Evan Derrick of Van Ryder Games are the highlight of this episode. We talk about our "advance screening" and present our Detective City of Angels review. Did you know that Wrigley Field was originally in Los Angeles??! Today we're talking about playing games with people who have jobs fixing cars. Oh, wait, that's wrong. Sometimes games can be really good but have a mechanic that otherwise we would hate. That, I think, makes the game even more special. We also totally didn't post any video content from Geekway.
On this super-short episode, we talk Mother's Day and reveal the winner of our BattleGoats giveaway. What did you do with your Mom (or mother-figure) on Sunday? The Project EGG Show: Entrepreneurs Gathering for Growth | Conversations That Change The World
Running a business is an extremely difficult endeavor in which only a few people truly succeed. One way to improve your chances is to learn more about strategic business management. In this interview, Anne-Marie De Witt, CEO of Fireside Games, shares her origin story and talks about strategic business management for her ecommerce brand. Anne-Marie started out as a speech language pathologist working in hospitals and public schools. She realized early on that she wanted to get into publishing more, and pivoted into educational publishing. She worked her way up from a position of copy editor all the way to becoming a vice president of product development. Around that time, her husband, Justin De Witt, was working in the board game industry as a production artist. The time came in 2013 when they decided to marry the business side of what she brought to the table with the industry knowledge that he was gaining and jump headfirst into Fireside Games. Fireside Games was founded in 2007 when they decided to take their hobby of creating board games and make it their livelihood. Justin had been designing games most of his life, and in 2009 Castle Panic became the first game published by Fireside Games. Since then, they've grown the Panic line and introduced entirely new games to their growing fanbase. They are "committed to bringing joy and shared experiences to the world and are convinced that board games are a fantastic tool toward that end." The duo love hearing from people all over the world about how their games help reconnect with friends and family, even in this hectic, digital world. By focusing on acts of service and helping others, we can all achieve our dreams through whichever vehicle we decide to pursue them through. After rambling on about FTL for most of last weeks episode a consensus was reached - we need structure... and by structure, I mean a time limit for topics... and by "we", I mean "Dave" - he was the one rambling on after all! Fresh out of an Another Dungeon's August Tabletop Day we had plenty to talk about too, but we hunkered down and narrowed our selection down to the following few titles - Small World Underground, Star Trek Panic, Sushi Go Party, and Discworld: Ankh Mopork. This structured episode was accompanied by the delectable Hoegaarden wit blanche - which, incidently, was Dave's first venture into the world of wheat beer! 00:00 - Intro 03:07 - Quest for Sponsorship - Hoegaarden wit blanche 05:42 - Small World Underground 15:16 - Star Trek Panic 27:18 - Sushi Go Party 32:53 - Discworld: Ankh Mopork 38:54 - Hoegaarden wit blanche rating Buy games at Here Be GamesFollow us on FacebookWatch us play games on YouTube or Read our articles on the website.
Dave really likes the game FTL: Faster Than Light - something which should be abundantly clear after he craps on about it for most of this episode! We also talk briefly about Castle Panic again (as Dan bought it during the week) and about gaming on a Mac - all while drinking the podcasts most expensive (and highly rated) beer thus far - Duvel! 00:00 - Intro 01:40 - Quest for Sponsorship - Duvel 05:31 - Castle Panic 13:17 - Mac Gaming 16:37 - FTL: Faster Than Light 39:40 - Duvel Rating Follow us on FacebookWatch us play games on YouTube or Read our articles on the website.
This week Dan and Dave discuss modernising old classics with Monopoly Revolution. Dave tries to teach Dan that games can be cooperative and we both get the Estrella Damm - Love of Lesbian song well and truly stuck in our heads! We also briefly touch on Pokemon GO... but only briefly as we know everyone's probably sick of hearing about it by now :) 00:00 - Intro 02:03 - This week's beer... Here in Show 22.0, Mark and Jeff feast on some leftovers from the tabletop of Wil Wheaton. But before digging into this cold pizza, there is some business to take care of. Mark and Jeff start by telling you all about our new Twitter Threads idea, one of which (#GameopolisTanks) has already completed, and a second of which (#GameopolisPnP) is just getting started. After this, it's on to the Dusty Old Box segment! This time, it's a Dusty Old Thing, with some pretty --interesting-- artwork! After the Dusty Old Box segment, Mark launches us into the show's first main topic: the Wizard's Tower expansion for Castle Panic. Mark covers the main ways this expansion changes the game, and the effect of these changes on the play experience. After Mark's main segment, Jeff finishes his 2-episode-long campaign to scratch his Arkham Horror Itch --with Fantasy Flight Games' Elder Sign. Jeff covers this new lighter Arkham play experience with focus on how the game differs from its parent game, Arkham Horror.
