Erica, Gil, Scott, and Sen have a roundtable discussion about player counts. We go through each of the common player counts, as well as a few uncommon counts, and discuss what's special about designing for them. SHOW NOTES 0m39s: Our thoughts about and general strategies for designing games at different player counts. 5m42s: 2-player games 9m20s: We chatted with Matt Wolfe about decision scales on Ludology 157 - Come Scale Away. 13m08s: Inhuman Conditions 13m59s: Belfort 16m24s: Alien: Fate of the Nostromo 19m41s: Pandemic 22m06s: Tokaido, High Rise 24m20s: Scott Pilgrim Miniatures the World 24m38s: 3p games 26m44s: The three-body problem. 27m38s: Here's Cole Wehrle's talk on kingmaking in games, and how it can be a good thing. 28m16s: Churchill 28m37s: Basari, which was adapted into Edel, Stein, and Reich in 2003 and modified to try to better handle a higher player count. Also, a note on ties with 3-players: it's impossible to tie on a vote with 3 voters (or any number of odd voters), as long as you are limited to two choices to vote for. Once you have at least 3 choices to vote for, the possibility space gets far more complicated (see the three-body problem above). 30m52s: Rayguns & Rocketships 32m25s: 9-5-2 is known by various names. Here are the rules to Sergeant Major, which is a very similar game; rule changes for 9-5-2 are further down the page. Also: Carolus Magnus, Bargain Hunter, End of the Triumvirate (Gil was wrong, it can play 2 players), Three Kingdoms Redux 32m58s: 4p games 38m24s: Stuffed Fables, Between Two Cities 39m14s: Tichu 40m03s: 5p games. Also, a note: Eagle-eared listeners will notice that you don't hear much from Scott from now until the end of the episode. He had to leave our recording session early, so we quickly recorded his bits for the end of the episode. And that's how the sausage gets made! 41m10s: 7 Wonders 44m16s: Alhambra, Alhambra: The Vizier's Favor, Catan: 5-6 Player Extension 47m36s: 6p games 50m44s: Godfather: A New Don. The "other Godfather game" Sen is hinting at is The Godfather: Corleone's Empire by friend of the show Eric Lang. 54m43s: Floor Plan, Welcome To..., Take It Easy, Time's Up, Karuba 56m11s: Werewolf, Two Rooms and a Boom 57m11s: The Unlock! series of games, Cranium 1h00m59s: Terra Mystica 1h01m23s: Arkham Horror 1h02m02s: 1p games. If you want to know more about designing solo versions of games, check out Ludology 154 - Leave Me Alone! (with Morten Monrad Pedersen), Ludology 234 - Playing With Time (with Dávid Turczi), and Ludology 248 - Solo-liloquy (with Carla Kopp). 1h05m12s: Onirim 1h06m38s: Chainsaw Warrior. Sen also mentions Ian Livingstone, who created the Fighting Fantasy series of interactive books with Steve Jackson (that is, the British Steve Jackson who co-founded Games Workshop, not the American Steve Jackson who designed Ogre, GURPS, Illuminati, and Munchkin. To muddy the picture further, the latter Steve Jackson authored three Fighting Fantasy books himself!). 1h07m33s: Kingdom Rush: Rift in Time 1h10m03s: 0p games, starting with So, You've Been Eaten. (Note that the BGG header only shows it as a 1-2 player game; technical limitations prevent it from properly showing as a 0-2 player game.) 1h11m34s: Strat-o-matic Baseball 1h13m30s: In Ludology 142 - Slots of Fun, Geoff and Mike chatted with slot machine designer Jeremy Hornik. 1h15m19s: Another link to Alien: Fate of the Nostromo. 1h15m43s: Sen's project: Avatar: Last Airbender RPG, Tiny Frontiers: Mecha and Monsters (referred to as "Mechs vs. Kaiju"), Coded Chronicles (Jay and Sen have already designed games with the Scooby Doo and The Shining licenses for this series), Dungeon & Dragons: Rock Paper Wizard 1h16m34s: Erica's projects: Rat Queens: To the Slaughter, Disney Sidekicks 1h17m37s: Gil's projects: Networks Broken Token insert, shipping issues, con season coming up

We are working to improve this for future episodes. Due to this, not mentioned in our gift guide that we recommend are a few games good for the younger audience, including Stuffed Fables, games by HABA including Karuba and Rhino Hero, and Kingdomino/Queendomino. On this episode of the Board Game BBQ, Sarah is joined by Def and Dan to talk about heavy games, light games, and everything in between. In our Sizzling Games, Def wows us with the epic Gaia Project, Dan (and his son) battle the undead in Zombie Kidz Evolution, and Sarah has been trying to get everyone onto her wavelength in, er... Wavelength. We also introduce a new segment: Beyond the Board, an interview series where we speak to interesting people in the board gaming community. This week we spoke with Oliver Millan, a Melbourne board game designer who has been working on his pet project, Matchbox Empires, for over two years. We discuss his inspiration for the game, and learn about its mechanics, but also enjoy a greater discussion about prototypes and playtesting. We reveal the winner of the most recent Board Game Bracket: Aeons End Legacy vs Azul, before announcing the next match-up: Through The Ages vs Dead of Winter. It's Dan vs Def in this one and only one game can be victorious. Make sure your favourite goes through to the next round by casting your vote on all of our socials. There's not a lot of Kickstarter action between the team this week, so instead Def breaks down the heavily-backed Nemesis for us. Meanwhile, Dan has backed the fun-sounding Roll Camera!: The Filmmaking Board Game. Swear An Oath is such an important segment - it's when out team stand before each other and our listeners and vow to honor the Board Game Gods by playing a game from our #shelfofshame. Which is why it is so disappointing when one of our own fails to respect the code and fulfill their oath. Okay, that was a bit heavy-handed - basically Sarah didn't have time to play Race For the Galaxy: Alien Artifacts this week. But she does make amends by doubling-down on her oath and adding Papayoo to the list. Meanwhile Dan played both Stuffed Fables and Fox In The Forest Duet, and Def played Tzolk'in. The lads then add Back In Time (Dan) and Viticulture (Def) to their oaths. For Sarah, it's all about strategy in the bag-building area control game War Chest. For Dan, it's all about character in the story-driven game Call To Adventure. For Steve, it's all about... his Uncle Bob? And lots of laughs!! Our Sizzling Games this week are all very different, and all great fun!   How do you curate your collection? Do you have a 1-in-1-out policy like Steve? Do you hang onto games for when your kids are older? Do you buy games with a particular person in mind? All of these ideas and more are explored in our topic of the Week as the team chat about how they have come to amass their current collections, and provide advice to those listeners that are looking to build up a solid collection from scratch.   We have all been bitten by the Kickstarterbug again! Steve has backed Rallyman: Dirt and also Dead Reckoning. Sarah recaps our recent BGBBQ game of Blood on the Clocktower which she also helped kickstart last year, and Dan has put himself down for Catapult Kingdoms.   In our Boardgame Bracket we pit Azul against Aeon's End Legacy - two very different games with solid fanbases behind them. We also reveal the winners of our past two match-ups, Mage Knight vs A Feast for Odin, and Brass: Birmingham vs Incan Gold. Make sure you hit up our social and vote for your favourite to ensure they progress to the next round.   In Swear An Oath Steve, the AEG fan-boy, swears to play Ecos: First Continent, adding it to his yet-to-be-played Forgotten Waters. Dan finally fulfilled Terraforming Mars but failed to put the paints down long enough to actually play Stuffed Fables. He then adds the co-op trick-taker Fox In The Forest Duet. Sarah had a blast playing Starfighter and vows to bring Obscurio to the table. (Beware of the traitor, Sarah!) And a special shout-out to friend of the show, Katia Howatson, who fulfilled her oath by playing Sorcerer.   Sizzling Games: War Chest (2:03), Call To Adventure (10:16), Bob's Your Uncle (18:48) Topic of the Week: How to Curate Your Collection (24:42) Kickstarter (41:51) Board Game Bracket (53:23) Swear An Oath (1:04:28)   The Saturday Night Gameshow!! On this week's episode of the Board Game BBQ Steve, Adrian and Dan sink their teeth into Card Games. But these are not your parents' card games. You won't find Canasta or 500 here. How about writing a Love Letter to the Princess? Fancy yourself some Exploding Kittens? And who doesn't love a Sushi Go Party? We also pay lip service to Hanabi and The Mind for more card gaming goodness. The Virtual Gaming Con is this week (June 24th-29th) and the Board Game BBQ is hosting live games across the Con. The team will be online for most of the con during Australian hours so you will be able to find a game or three to jump in on without having to wait until the US or Europe comes online. Search for "Board Game BBQ" and you'll find us all in the game schedule. Our Sizzling Games this week are Fugitive, Pandemic Legacy: Season 1, and Orleans: and you couldn't get three more different games in a single segment if you tried. Our followers on FaceBook and Instagram have decided another winner in the Board Game Bracket, and this week's match-up is another great battle: Five Tribes vs Mansion of Madness. Adrian and Dan plead their cases for the better game before we throw it over to our listeners to choose. Swear An Oath this week takes a turn as not one, but two of our hosts fail to fulfill their Oaths. Dan and Steve both failed to complete Terraforming Mars, Kemet, and Photosynthesis, but Adrian gracefully lets them off the hook. Adrian tells of his late-night addiction to Decrypto and then goes about setting Exploding Kittens as his next Oath. Dan adds Stuffed Fables to his list, while Steve doubles down on his oath by adding Cartographers and Paperback. --- The News (1:08) Sizzling Games: Fugitive (5:00), Pandemic Legacy Season 1 (14:44), Orleans (24:54) Topic of the Week: Card Games (36:18) Board Game Bracket (1:01:56) Swear An Oath (1:17:30) **FUGITIVE ONLINE** Fugitive by Tim Fowers is now online! Episode 52 of Gaming Couch! This past week I got to experience I number of AWESOME games. Yes, I have had my fair share of CTR NItro Fueled and Super Mario Maker 2 but there was more. Some awesome board games have been added to my library. I already looked at Dice Forge and House of Danger last week but after that episode went up I got Stuffed Fables and oh man....It's a REALLY good game. Huge shout out to Plaid Hat Games for this one. Join me today with an indepth review of the game and some first time experiences playing the game. Because it is an adventure game that is big on a story narrative I want to warn people of spoilers for the first story of the game. When you hear me call out the warning hop to 59:20 to avoid hearing about the results of the first tale and jump straight to my final thoughts. Check out Plaid Hat Games website: https://www.plaidhatgames.com/ Don't forget I am now on Twitter (@G_C_Podcast) for daily updates and random tidbits as well as reviving the Facebook page for weekly updates. You'll see the red couch and know its me. Take care, Smartboy P.S: I hope you like the summer heat. It isn't my thing...but it is really beautiful out.

Happy New Year! In Episode 6, we talk about paragraph games, a topic near and dear to several of our hearts. Learn about the game that Frank thinks is better than Star Saga (gasp!), the game that might be Joe's favorite of all time, and the game that Mike calls "the Dark Souls of paragraph games." If you're interested in playing (British) Steve Jackson's Sorcery! series on your PC or phone, turn to page 17. If you want to play the classic Lone Wolf choose-your-own-adventure books online for free, turn to page 6. If you want to hear Joe butcher several Polish game designers' names - we're all very, very sorry - fast-forward to 1:01:10. If you'd like to see Frank's beautifully-painted Stuffed Fables miniatures, turn to page 12. If you would be kind enough to give us a review on iTunes, turn to page 42.
