The NHL offseason is already heating up, and Brenden Escott is joined by Mick Kern from SiriusXM NHL Network radio to dive into the biggest stories shaping the league. With Mike Babcock cleared by the NHL to return behind an NHL bench, we examine whether he's the right fit for the Edmonton Oilers, how his coaching style would translate in today's game and what challenges would come with leading a Stanley Cup contender in one of hockey's most demanding markets. We also break down John Chayka's first major move as Leafs general manager, shipping Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit to Philadelphia for Emil Andrae and Sam Ersson. What does the deal reveal about Toronto's priorities moving forward? Elsewhere around the league, the Leafs made a surprising choice by hiring Jim Hiller after an extensive coaching search, while the Vegas Golden Knights opted for continuity by promoting Ryan Craig from within. We compare the two approaches, discuss which organization handled its coaching search best and identify the biggest gamble of the offseason so far. Plus, with the NHL Draft just around the corner in Buffalo, we look at the top storylines, potential surprises and the rumours generating the most buzz as teams prepare for one of the most important events on the hockey calendar. We also examine the major offseason storylines that could reshape the league in the weeks ahead. The Leafs made a surprise hire by naming Jim Hiller as head coach, a move that aligns with GM Chayka’s analytical approach but raises questions if past relationships with key players factored into the decision. In Vegas, the Golden Knights continued their aggressive organizational approach by moving on from John Tortorella and promoting longtime successor Ryan Craig, while GM Kelly McCrimmon defended the franchise’s win-at-all-costs reputation by pointing to three Stanley Cup Final appearances in just nine seasons. Around the league, trade speculation continues to swirl around Connor Hellebuyck despite Winnipeg not actively shopping the star goaltender. Other potential trade candidates remain a hot topic as well, with Matthew Knies viewed as a highly valuable but unlikely Leafs trade chip, Buffalo facing difficult decisions on Bowen Byram’s future, and Vincent Trocheck once again generating speculation after changing agents and continuing to seek a fresh start away from New York.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The coaching carousel and the non-stop Darnell Nurse trade rumours have completely dominated the airwaves in Oil Country. Dustin Nielson (Dusty) and Hernan Salas are shifting gears for a full hour of pure, unfiltered Edmonton Oilers talk to address the massive elephant in the room: management's absolute disaster in the blue paint. Stan Bowman is staring down a massive crease conundrum this summer, and the boys are here to unpack the latest rumours and simulate the solution. On Today's Show: The Goaltending Pickle: We've spent weeks debating who is behind the bench, but what about who is stopping pucks? With Calvin Pickard and Connor Ingram hitting the UFA market, the Oilers are backed into a corner with massive salary commitments. Reports are officially surfacing linking Edmonton to Montreal Canadiens netminder Samuel Montembeault. The boys break down the rumours and look at what it would cost Kent Hughes to move him. Montembeault in Edmonton: Let's play out the hypothetical scenario. If the Oilers head into next season with a tandem of Samuel Montembeault and a rebounding Tristan Jarry... is that honestly good enough to get this team back to a Stanley Cup Final? Hernan and Dusty debate the ceiling of that duo, Jarry's path forward after a brutal stretch, and if a 50/50 split is a realistic option for next season. Alternative Targets in Net: If Montembeault isn't the answer and a Jarry buyout doesn't make financial sense, where else can the front office look? The fellas map out the remaining trade and free-agent board, evaluating high-risk reclamation projects and blockbuster options like Jacob Markstrom. Vegas & Toronto Find Their Guy: Around the league, the Vegas Golden Knights and Toronto Maple Leafs have both hired their new head coaches —Ryan Craig to Vegas and Jim Hiller to Toronto. The boys react to each hiring, discussing what it means for the remaining bench bosses left on the market. The Oil Stream is presented by Boston Pizza!
The final hour opens with discussion around the belief that this may be the strongest Commanders roster yet under head coach Dan Quinn, and Jayden Daniels adding intrigue after alluding to offseason workouts with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The conversation shifts to NBA Draft buzz, where Darryn Peterson reportedly prefers landing with the Wizards or Grizzlies rather than Utah, sparking debate about draft positioning, player preference, and what it could mean for Washington's future if they land a top talent. Later, the show turns to the NHL, where the Vegas Golden Knights make a stunning coaching move, firing John Tortorella and hiring Ryan Craig, reshaping expectations for the franchise moving forward. The hour also includes calls from our audience regarding the Commanders' outlook and much more.

Since entering the NHL in 2017, no team has operated quite like the Vegas Golden Knights. With a "win now" mindset from their inaugural season, the team has traded draft picks and have made whatever moves the rules have allowed in order to be annual contenders. After removing Stanley Cup-winning coach Bruce Cassidy with just eight games left in the regular season, the VGK responded to interim coach John Tortorella to within two wins of the Stanley Cup.And within two days of the Final, Torts was gone and replaced by the Golden Knights AHL affiliate head coach in Henderson, Ryan Craig. So begins the off-season for the Golden Knights. Montreal dropped a tough OT decision to Carolina as Andrei Svechnikov scored the winner for a 2-1 series lead, with Lane Hutson publicly taking responsibility for a giveaway that led to the OT goal. Rod Brind’Amour’s team-first mentality continues to define the Hurricanes and Martin St. Louis now faces the challenge of keeping the Canadiens focused on tightening up defensively — particularly clearing the zone and protecting the middle of the ice — rather than dwelling on one play. Out West, Vegas has stunned Colorado with a 3-0 series lead as injuries to Nathan MacKinnon, quiet performances from several Avs stars and stronger goaltending from the Golden Knights have tilted the series heavily. Mark Stone’s impactful return in game 3 arguably overshadowed the hype around Cale Makar’s comeback. Coaching chatter continues as John Tortorella’s future remains uncertain despite a potential championship run, with Ryan Craig viewed as Vegas’ eventual successor. Meanwhile in Colorado there’s growing speculation about sweeping organizational changes if the Avalanche are eliminated as early as tonight.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, Eric Thompson interviews Ryan Craig of Traverse City, Michigan, along with his Ninja Coach Mark Johnson, to explore a powerful transformation: pivoting from a cold lead centric business to a relationship based Ninja business. Ryan previously ran a high pressure lead generation operation with a large team and roughly 35,000 dollars per month in overhead, including about 10,000 dollars per month spent on cold internet leads. The model produced transactions, but it also created constant stress, fragmented attention, and a life where Ryan was physically present with his family but mentally tied to the phone. After discovering Ninja Selling while listening to the book with his wife, Ryan realized there was a different way to build a real estate career, one centered on relationships rather than relentless lead conversion. In 2025 he fully committed to the Ninja approach with coaching support from Mark Johnson. The result was dramatic: Ryan produced 722,000 dollars in gross commission income from 47 transactions and 34 million in volume, while simultaneously reducing his monthly overhead by about 25,000 dollars. Ryan credits the transformation to mindset, structure, and consistent implementation of the Ninja Nine habits. Instead of chasing cold leads, he began focusing on handwritten notes, proactive relationship calls, gratitude, and intentional conversations with people who already knew and trusted him. Mark helped him slow down, eliminate unnecessary commitments, and prioritize meaningful interactions over constant activity. The shift not only improved his income but restored balance in his life, allowing him to be present with his wife and five children. Ryan's story illustrates how focusing on relationships, consistency, and purpose can produce both better business results and a better life. Key Takeaways Cold lead generation can create a false sense of productivity while increasing stress and reducing meaningful relationships High overhead business models often hide the true cost of lead driven systems Pivoting to a sphere based business dramatically increases income per hour and reduces overhead Relationship calls feel very different from cold lead calls because the trust already exists Handwritten notes and proactive conversations create compounding opportunities Consistent Ninja Nine habits create momentum and confidence Coaching provides clarity, accountability, and perspective during major business transitions Slowing down can actually accelerate growth by focusing energy on the right activities Addition through subtraction is often the fastest way to improve both life and business Fragmentation and constant responsiveness create anxiety, while proactive systems restore control Real estate success does not require working constantly, it requires working intentionally Relationships that already exist are often the most overlooked source of business Memorable Quotes "I bought the book for my wife and it turned out to be mine." "The cold lead style of business is an illusion." "You can only go so far before you run out of gas." "I felt like a robot being told where to go and what to do." "My kids would try to tell me about their day and I'd hold up one finger and say one more minute." "I realized 87 percent of my business had always come from people I knew." "My phone used to ring nonstop. Now it hardly rings at all." "I used to feel fragmented. Now everything feels intentional." "Addition through subtraction changed everything." "The more things I cut out, the more the right things showed up." "Doing the work consistently is what made the difference." Recorded live at the ASU GSV Summit in San Diego, this episode of The Disagreement Podcast tackles the pressing question: Is college still worth it? Host Alex Grodd moderates a dynamic debate between higher education experts Dr. Bridget Burns, CEO of the University Innovation Alliance, and Ryan Craig, Managing Director at Achieve Partners and author of Apprentice Nation. Together, they unpack whether the traditional college model delivers economic and societal value in today's economy, or if shorter, skills-based alternatives like apprenticeships offer a better path. The discussion dives into ROI, workforce readiness, and the need for institutional reform, with Burns defending college's broader societal benefits and Craig advocating for "earn and learn" pathways to address employability gaps. With sharp insights, personal anecdotes, and a candid exchange of ideas, this episode challenges assumptions about higher education's role in a rapidly changing world. From the alarming statistic that only a quarter of college matriculants achieve their desired job outcomes to the call for integrating work-based learning into curricula, Burns and Craig offer compelling perspectives. A lively “steel man” exercise caps the debate, showcasing their ability to articulate each other's arguments. This episode is a must-listen for parents, students, and educators grappling with the future of post-secondary education.Key Takeaways:College's economic ROI is under scrutiny, with nearly half of students not completing degrees and over half of graduates underemployed.Societal benefits of college, like critical thinking and civic engagement, remain vital but must be balanced with better employment outcomes.Apprenticeships and work-based learning offer viable alternatives, though they may limit long-term career flexibility.Higher education needs reform to align curricula with workforce demands, especially in the AI-driven economy. The debate highlights the need for diverse, adaptable educational pathways rather than a one-size-fits-all model.“College is not a monolith, and it is a very individual choice, and we have to do a far better job actually helping people be successful with it.” – Dr. Bridget BurnsLearn more about the UIA by visiting:WebsiteLinkedInTwitterYouTubeFacebookThis week's episode is sponsored by Mainstay, a student retention and engagement tool where you can increase student and staff engagement with the only platform consistently proven to boost engagement, retention, and wellbeing. In Surrey, B.C., a bird renowned for its beauty became the centre of an ugly dispute. In the quiet Sullivan Hights neighbourhood, a group of peafowl divided a community for over a decade. The story began when Ryan Craig and his wife bought a home and quickly noticed three peacocks roosting nearby. At first they were charmed, but soon became overwhelmed as this population exploded to some 100 birds. They and their fellow residents soon faced damaged property and a messy, noisy battle with the animals. In his documentary, A Foul Feud, CBC Vancouver journalist Rafferty Baker takes us into this divided community where neighbours were no longer speaking to each other, a tree was illegally felled and bylaw officers called in to deal with the peacocks — and the residents. The documentary was produced by Rafferty Baker and Joan Webber and originally aired on The Current in 2018.Storylines is part of the CBC Audio Doc Unit

Apprenticeships aren't just for blacksmiths! The notion that an individual could earn a living, while simultaneously learning how to do their job is such a foreign concept. That's certainly not how we do things here in America where more folks believe that it takes money to make money! In recent decades more individuals have subscribed to the idea that you have to go to the most expensive college, take on a boatload of student loans, and saddle yourself with years of debt if you want a decent job that pays. Some of the most selective universities are quickly approaching the $100,000 mark… for a single year of college. Nothing has risen faster than the price of college over the decades. But, what if there was another way? We're joined by education and workforce expert Ryan Craig who says that there are alternatives. His book, Apprentice Nation explores how a modern apprenticeship system will allow students and job seekers to jump-start their careers by learning while they earn, leading to greater workforce diversity and geographic mobility. Hear why other countries are beating us at the apprenticeship game, the types of industries that would greatly benefit from apprenticeships, why college and apprenticeships aren't mutually exclusive, where you can go to find the best learn and earn programs today, and much more! History Factory's CEO Jason Dressel interviews Ryan Craig, Managing Director of Achieve Partners and author of "Apprentice Nation: How the "Earn and Learn" Alternative to Higher Education Will Create a Stronger and Fairer America."
In this week's episode of Trending in Education, Ryan Craig, author of the new book Apprentice Nation: How the "Earn and Learn" Alternative to Higher Education Will Create a Stronger and Fairer America, joins host Mike Palmer to dive into how "earn and learn" models like apprenticeships can bridge the growing experience gap facing young workers seeking their first good job. Craig makes a compelling case for why apprenticeships should be a mainstream option for high school graduates, not just a pathway for trade occupations. He argues apprenticeships can provide the work experience and skills training needed to prepare young people for high-demand roles in fields like cybersecurity, healthcare, and software development while presenting a less risky alternative to the loan-based approach that predominates in higher education. The discussion reveals how apprenticeships have languished in the US compared to countries like Switzerland and Germany. Craig advocates passionately for greater government investment and support for intermediaries that can set up and run apprenticeship programs at scale. Without this kind of backing, companies lack incentives and capacity to provide these earn-and-learn opportunities. The lively exchange offers thought-provoking ideas around closing both the skills gap and the growing "experience gap" faced by college graduates who aren't graduating ready to work. Craig warns that employers are increasingly expecting entry-level hires to already have real work experience. Apprenticeships and other earn-and-learn models can help bridge this divide. If you care about creating new pathways to economic mobility and opportunity for young Americans in the digital age, you won't want to miss this forward-thinking discussion. Tune in to hear Craig's compelling vision for how an "Apprentice Nation" could transform education and workforce training. Subscribe to Trending in Education wherever you get your podcasts.
