We support design engineers and make lightning protection easy. 0:14You're listening to the struck podcast. I'm Dan Blewett. I'm Allen Hall. And here on strike we talk about everything aviation, aerospace engineering and lightning protection. 0:30Alright, welcome back to the struck podcast. I'm your co host, Dan Blewett. On today's show, we're going to talk about a new contract between bombard a Learjet and the US Air Force looks like it's worth about almost half a billion dollars, so exciting for them. We'll talk a little bit about more about supersonic jets. So obviously aireon collapse, we'll talk a little bit more about that. There's been some interesting news stories that have come out. And then we'll also talk about boom, announcing a partnership with United united wants to buy a bunch of planes. So we'll see if that comes to fruition. Obviously, that's going to be quite a long game. In our engineering segment, we'll talk about a Boeing mq 25 drone, refueling and FA t fa 18 in flight. So pretty exciting. First time a drone has refueled manned aircraft. And we'll also talk a little bit about airships, and why one maker is betting that passengers will choose comfort over speed. Lastly, in our E VTOL segment, we'll talk about ehang. And some interesting news about flight controls from Joby. So, let's start with mrda. They've got a $464.8 million contract for bombarding a global 6000 aircraft with their Air Force. what's notable about this aircraft, it's just a thing of it as a midsize business jet, which makes the tube section 1:54decently sized. So you can put some humans in it and put equipment in it. So if you're running a special missions aircraft, where you want to put a couple of control centers, in it, monitoring stations, those kind of things, you can, you can fit that all that infrastructure into the aircraft, you have room to do it, there's places to mount all that hardware. And then typically what those aircraft will have is sensors mounted on the top of the aircraft on the fuselage and on the belly to look left or right, up and down and communicate satellite data back to whoever they want to send it to. So there's a you just need a certain amount of size aircraft to do all that and the global 6000 is sort of is really a nice platform for that and that's they've been doing a lot of work in Wichita Learjet, they're on modding and doing military support aircraft for a long time. I mean, I think I can revert back into the early 2000s. They were doing some back then I worked on a couple of those. And I think the the bonus here is that Wichita as a city has been really getting hammered on terms of not having any really new projects going on. Textron has got a couple of derivative projects going on. But in terms of Lear, Jet Lear jets been shrinking and they shut down all production of Lear jet just recently so everybody is left at Lear jet on the west side of town there needs something to work on. And so it's good they earn you know, 400 $500 million project gets some a couple years out in terms of support, and they have a great flight test. And they've always had a great Flight Test Center in Wichita. So all the Bombardier flight test programs,

In April of this year, we reported on the latest activities of Aerion Supersonic, the ambitious, Boeing-backed planemaker whose goal was to bring supersonic passenger jets to the sky by the middle of the decade. The company's “boomless cruise” technology is designed to ferry business travelers on an ultra quiet jet in about half the time of a traditional plane… without creating a sonic boom. The plane has generated a lot of excitement throughout its development, and Aerion touted an $11 billion sales backlog. And while a lot can change over the course of just a few months, it still came as a shock when multiple news outlets reported last week that Aerion was shutting down.Aerion confirmed the news to CNBC, saying in a statement that “the current financial environment” has “proven hugely challenging to close on the scheduled and necessary large new capital requirements.” Translation? They're out of money. And while the company seemed very bullish when it touted product developments in April, experts say we shouldn't exactly be stunned that Aerion pulled the plug. Engadget says this was “not a surprising outcome” due to the heavy expense of aircraft design and the circumstances of the pandemic creating a big question mark as to how long it will take for air travel to fully recover. They suggest that more permanent shifts to remote work might mean the market for business travel might not roar back fully… possibly ever.

In this episode of the World of Aviation Podcast, host Adam Thorn and reporter Hannah Dowling discuss the global fallout of the Belarus hijacking, and what the next stages of the investigation could look like. The crew also discuss IATA's discreet optimism towards global air travel recovery that appeared to see the association change its forecast for recovery back to 2023 from 2024, as well as a UK-based start-up looking to see the return of the blimp in 2025. Alright, welcome back to the struck aerospace engineering podcast. I'm your co host, Dan Blewett. On today's show, we've got a bunch of Boeing related news, some other news. So first, we'll start with Emirates, sending a warning to Boeing that it might refuse their 777 x shipment. That doesn't meet commitments. We'll talk about Airbus and some other helicopter market and our engineering segment today we'll talk a little bit more about the grounding issue the electrical issues that Boeing's had. And how does the complex fastening riveting? Just the order of operations in manufacturing played a role in that. And we'll also talk about sustainable jet fuels and a potential tax credit that's coming out in potential legislation. Lastly, on our EBT well segment, like a little bit about john Air Mobility as they're trying to get a will they have a partnership now with cae to accelerate design of a flight simulator. And we'll talk about the implications for aireon shutting down. Of course, Ariane is not an EBT well, but a supersonic jet company, now defunct, but this will certainly send a ripples throughout a lot of these throughout the industry, as a lot of these other startup companies, which were well funded like aireon, maybe wonder if they're next. So Alan, let's start here with with Emirates. So they warned Boeing that they were refused 777 x jets, if they fall short of contractual performance commitments, is this a big deal, or is this pretty sort of normal par for the course, it's normal if you're inside company to company, but it's unusual to see that get into the press. 2:06So somebody is getting upset, and those using the press as a leverage point. Because the aircraft manufacturer doesn't want to be in the press about that stuff. And they don't want it to spread that maybe their performance numbers are not being met. And on the triple seven, there's been a lot of conjecture about the performance of the power plants, like what kind of thrust we got, what kind of fuel burn we have, because that's critical to the operation of any airline or freighter company, for that matter of how much fuel we're gonna burn with x kind of load in it, and what's the range and all those kind of things. As you can imagine, if you're the analyst at the airline company, and you're trying to put that into your database and figure out what the cost of an airline ticket is, or what kind of profitability this airplane is going to be what routes you can fly it on, you have nothing to base that on, you just have no data without having that that's like the most crucial piece of data of all of it is engine performance. So you can get a lot of back and forth between buyers and producers of ...

The State of Florida is open for business and building a name for itself as a hub for the space industry, supersonic jets and autonomous vehicles. Jimmy Patronis, the state’s Chief Financial Officer, is the man who manages all the budgets, keeps the trains running and even serves as the fire marshal. He sits down with host Grayson Brulte to talk about the revitalization of the “Space Coast” and how emerging technology companies can succeed in Florida.   Before the conversation kicks off though, Grayson gets Jimmy to explain his ongoing Twitter pursuit of Elon Musk to bring SolarCity to Florida. The two segue into how the “Space Coast” has revitalized itself into the “Comeback Coast” as private sectors have come to Florida to start businesses and add jobs. Jimmy explains the role that government plays in this process to help industries grow and prosper.   The conversation explores the commercialization of space flights and how space tourism can bolster Florida’s economy; what’s next for supersonic jets now that Aerion has planted its flag in Florida, fulfilling Jimmy’s obsession with Concordes and supersonic flight; and how the state’s policies are attracting self-driving vehicle companies to relocate to Florida, which will ultimately lower insurance policies for residents.   Jimmy digs into how government, and specifically the CFO, can support these burgeoning industries, from ensuring that R&D in space exploration stays in-state to the liability protection bill in the Florida Legislature that will help businesses and the investor community to attracting manufacturing companies to the state.   Grayson and Jimmy close out the conversation by discussing what Florida’s economy looks like now and in the future, and how a well-funded pension, a stable economy, and a government that’s open for business can provide new opportunities.   Connect with Jimmy Patronis on Twitter at https://twitter.com/JimmyPatronis.   Subscribe to SAE Tomorrow Today or visit www.sae.org/podcasts to stay up to date on all the latest information from SAE. Aerion plans to bring back the Golden Age of Flying, only this time, it will be done by an environmentally conscious, technology-innovative company. Tom Vice, Chairman, President and CEO of Aerion, lends his expertise in supersonic aviation to the podcast for a conversation with host Grayson Brulte on all things Aerion, plus insights into why the aviation industry stopped innovating and what the future holds.   Tom walks us through his journey into aviation, from watching every Apollo launch on a small, black and white TV to working on the B2 Bomber to the “most incredible thing” he worked on at Northrop Grumman: the James Webb Space Telescope, which Tom believes could be the tool that finds life beyond Earth. Tom recalls the lessons he’s learned along the way and how they have shaped his vision for innovation and sustainability.   Tom shares the vision for Aerion Connect, which builds out the entire travel ecosystem and experience—FBOs, travelling to-from airports, airplanes—to allow travelers to experience the joy of travelling once again. All of this aligns with Aerion’s vison to connect any two points in the world within three hours in a more compassionate and empathetic way, without spending so much time in an airplane. Essentially, get to your destination, enjoy your destination, and learn and love from it.   Next, we step into Aerion’s highly anticipated AS2 jet and hear plans for when it will start soaring through the sky. We learn about the fully customizable, highly digitized, “Whisper Quiet” cabin; how “Boomless Cruise” is a game changing supersonic technology that’s closer to commercial reality than most people think; and how the AS2 can reinvent business by cutting significant travel times.   The conversation digs deeper into the second revolutionary aspect that Aerion is perfecting: new fuels and power sources. Tom shares how customers, investors and the general public appreciate Aerion’s commitment using biofuels that are kind to our planet and are excited to see the AS2’s aerodynamically clean and efficient engine. Grayson and Tom touch upon Aerion’s partnership with Canadian-based Carbon Engineering and how they are setting Aerion’s advancements apart from the industry.   Throughout the conversation, Tom touches on Aerion 2050, the company’s strategic plan to go to hypersonic, branch into supersonics for commercial aviation, what future fuel and power sources will make this a reality, the AS3, and take us inside of Aerion Park in Melbourne, Fla., where the AS2 will be designed, built and tested.   To close out, Grayson and Tom discuss why aerospace innovation, specifically with supersonic jets, stopped in the mid-20th Century. From the difficult challenges to overcome environmental and noise concerns to the increased focus on revenue and dollars in commercial aviation, Tom discusses why aerospace, once of the birthplace of innovation, became stagnant; but offers optimism for what the future holds for the industry.   Learn more about Aerion at www.aerionsupersonic.com.   Subscribe to SAE Tomorrow Today or visit www.sae.org/podcasts to stay up to date on all the latest information from SAE.

We have more game reviews this week, as well as something of a follow-up on last week's conversation about the psychology of cheating in board games. We welcome Anthony back to the show to discuss Aerion, the latest in the Oniverse series (3:55), then Jason talks about a unique, push-your-luck take on deckbuilding, Heroes of Tenefyr (14:01). Finally, Jason revisits the topic of the psychology of cheating, but in a different way. The board gaming community became wrapped up in some controversy this past week - a creator was noted for committing plagiarism on their blog. A lot of "naming and shaming" happened, as well as people wondering why anyone would be driven to plagiarize. Jason shares about some of the pit traps that creators can face - they're much more common than you might think. Next up in acquisition disorders, Anthony looks at Aerion, the new solo game from Shadi Torbey, and Chris looks at 18Chesapeake, a new entry-level 18XX game now on Kickstarter.  At the table this week, Anthony reviews Bumuntu, abstract-like tile game from Wizkids, and Chris reviews Clank!: The Mummy's Curse with Clank!
