Happy anniversary to Tommy Pham, who eight years ago went deep for the first time as a major leaguer, a two-run shot at Busch Stadium that gave the Cardinals the lead after a Matt Kemp RBI single for the Padres in the top of the third inning. Scoring ahead of Pham on that first homer was an appreciative Lance Lynn, who'd given up the run to San Diego in the top of the frame, and led off the bottom with a single. Two innings later, Lynn and Pham hit back-to-back doubles, and the Cardinals went on to a 3-1 victory — Lynn the winner, he and the just called up Pham (he was in his third game that season after a cup of coffee the previous September) responsible for all the runs.* Tommy Pham hit his first home run off Ian Kennedy, 7/5/15* Ian Kennedy gave up his first home run to B.J. When he was a young teen, Oscar Herrera (Former lead singer with The Sleep of Reason, Halo, El Duende and Black Tape for a Blue Girl) discovered the Beatles and there was no looking back. When he and his wife had children they made sure that music - and especially the Beatles - was front-and-center in their lives. For this special episode, Oscar is joined by his daughter Danielle Herrera as they unpack some songs from the Fab Four's 1968 release 'The Beatles' aka The White Album. Along the way they are both amused and slightly confused by Rob's lack of familiarity with the record, and it's a super-fun conversation! I'm So Tired - Alex Chilton; These Fleeting Moments, She's Gone - Black Tape For A Blue Girl; Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Back In The U.S.S.R. - The Beatles; California Girls - The Beach Boys; Dear Prudence - Siouxsie & The Banshees; Dear Prudence - The Beatles; You Shouldn't Be So Sad - The Kinks; Sand and Foam - Donovan; Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da Story (part 1) - Jimmy Scott; Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da - The Beatles; Goo Goo Itch - DEVO; The Continuing Story Of Buffalo Bill, While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles; What Is Life - George Harrison; Happiness Is A Warm Gun - The Breeders; Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Martha My Dear, Blackbird, Piggies, Rocky Raccoon, I Will, Julia, Sexie Sadie - The Beatles; Mr Blue Sky - E.L.O.; Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey, Helter Skelter - The Beatles; Helter Skelter - Siouxsie & The Banshees; Revolution, Revolution 1, Cry Baby Cry, Revolution 9, Good Night - The Beatles; Good Night - Linda Ronstadt

Written at the end of 1967 and finding a home later the following year on the back end of the White Album, "Cry Baby Cry" serves as several different significant markers. It's John's last real psychedelic track, marking the end of his acid-haze word play and the start of writing as reporting on real life. It's the last track engineer Geoff Emerick works on with the band, quitting mid-session due to ongoing tensions. And it's also the start of what Jonathan refers to as "the creepiest 11 and a half minutes in the Beatles catalog." This dreamy, opium-den-sounding track is a fantastic tune, with great work all around from the band, especially Paul's brilliant bass work (Julia thinks the his part at the beginning sounds like a spaceship!). A great tune, with an ominous vibe that leads the listener down a dark path, with Paul's "Can You Take Me Back" segue guiding the listener into the darkness of whatever they're about to experience with "Revolution 9." Returning to the show this week is singer/songwriter Paul Sanchez, one of the most prolific, award-winning, and beloved songwriters in New Orleans. After releasing 19 solo albums (including a recent vinyl reissue of his 1992 solo classic Jet Black and Jealous), we take the time to look back at the role the Beatles, as writers, have impacted his songwriting through the years. We touch base on all sorts of things, like the chemistry of bands vs brands (Paul was a guitarist and founding member the band Cowboy Mouth, and after leaving after 15 years, Jonathan joined the band as guitarist for the next 3 years, more details in the show), whether Nebraska is Bruce Springsteen's Plastic Ono Band, the immediacy and vulnerability of Lennon, and realizing that your songs are ALWAYS about you in some way. We also get a rendition of the first song Paul ever wrote! Paul also now is co-host of "Another Cup of Coffee," a Youtube-based podcast airing live Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9am CST! Tune in! Venture under Maharajji's blanket with Erin Montgomery author of “Dirty Little Secret” as we get all emotional and discuss the human emotional life related to the spiritual awakening. Get your box of tissues before you listen. Cry baby cry, make your mother sigh as the Beatles sung. “Now when an emotional upset starts, it may start out of a thought process, but then it starts to involve all of the body — the adrenaline and all kinds of chemical reactions. Then often, one of the ways out of it is to work with the body. For example, running or movement. Taking a walk. Doing things which start to release the energy, the kind of chemical buildup. Because you get that kind of nervous energy when you are emotionally upset. Then there is meditation–quieting down and allowing yourself to see how lost you've gotten. I mean on the deeper devotional path, there is the offering of the emotion to God. Saying, “Here, You take it. I offer it to You.” There is appreciating your humanity. “Yea, here I am. I'm human. I just lost it again. Ah so!” There's the Ah so — Right? “Okay. Once more. Boy, am I hung up.” These are all spiritual techniques. See, it's the upleveling. It's the ability to see it without denying it. Not saying, “I'm not really upset.” “I am upset. Far out. Here we are again.” It's like talking with God and saying “Oh, look at how deliciously human I am.” Not to milk it. Not to keep feeding it, but not to push it away. That's the quickest way through. To acknowledge it, allow it, and then use body energy to keep working out the chemical stuff that's built up and the tension in the body that's been built up. And then get on with it and just keep letting go, letting go, letting go. Sometimes music does it. There are a lot of techniques that do it.” - Ram Dass Erin's website https://www.peoplesouterdimension.net/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Welcome to the Big Beatles Sort Out, a show in which I, author and musician Garry Abbott, attempt to finally decide my favourite Beatles recordings by scoring each and every one for lyrical content, musicality and production. I am assisted in this venture by my brother and resident Beatles expert, Paul Abbott, with a deep knowledge of the Beatles and the wider context in which they operated. Each episode we explore and score 5 songs from the Beatles full recording catalogue. The songs are drawn at random to try and avoid any album or era prejudices skewing the results. So please join us as we try and sort out, The Beatles. While many dismiss mourning for joy, the beatitudes call us to remember that mourning is the characteristic of the kingdom. We ought not be surprised at suffering loss, and we should be open to embracing the sadness that comes with mourning.
We wrap up our four-part look at the Beatles White Album by welcoming back producer, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and co-proprietor of Love Hz studios - Michael Carpenter. Why were the Beatles Michael's first memory? Which version of "Revolution" is better - electric or semi-acoustic? How did Lennon's songwriting change on the White Album? How did Lennon come through for McCartney on "Honey Pie"? How did "Savoy Truffle" change the way Michael records music? Why does Michael (and John Lennon) hate "Cry Baby Cry"? How the hell can Michael defend "Revolution 9"? All this and more for your listening pleasure.
