Ken Coomer joins me on the podcast today. Ken is a fantastic drummer, producer, and studio owner, as well as one of the few musicians I know that is actually from Nashville! Ken is well-known as the original drummer for Wilco, as well as the last for Uncle Tupelo, bands that literally defined the alt-country genre in the mid-90's. But before that, Ken came up in the punk and alternative rock scene here in Nashville with his band Clockhammer, and since leaving Wilco in 2002, he has had an incredible career as a studio drummer and producer, operating most recently out of his studio just a few blocks away from me in East Nashville called Cartoon Moon Recording. Ken was heavily involved in the recording of Uncle Tupelo's classic “Anodyne”, as well as the Wilco albums “FM”, “Being There”, “Summerteeth”, “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” and the “Mermaid Avenue” projects with Wilco and Billy Bragg. After his run with Wilco, Ken returned to Nashville to try his hand at session work and producing. He's played with and recorded on albums for Steve Earle, Will Hoge, Al Green, Tim Finn, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and many more. He's also had an incredible run producing some huge Spanish artists, which is an intriguing left-turn that his more recent career has taken, with artists like Chetes, and AppleTree - albums that were huge in Mexico and Columbia. It was great to have Ken drop in to speak about all of this amazing history. Police In Baltimore Super Storm's Impact On NYC. Beginning his career in the Baltimore Police Department, he witnessed firsthand the unpredictability and violence that can erupt in an instant. His time in Baltimore was marked by traumatic events, including responding to calls involving his fellow officers being attacked, one of whom was stabbed in the eye during a violent assault. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. Seeking new opportunities, Carchidi lateraled to the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland. However, his career was tragically cut short due to injuries sustained in a line-of-duty accident, forcing him into early retirement at just 31 years old. Even after leaving the force, his commitment to service did not wane. He later took on the role of Sergeant at the Sea Gate Police Department in New York, where he faced one of the greatest challenges of his career, Super Storm Sandy. Thomas Carchidi’s journey through law enforcement is a testament to the resilience and sacrifice that comes with wearing the badge. You can listen to the interview as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website and platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. The Impact of Super Storm Sandy on NYC Super Storm Sandy, which formed on October 22, 2012, wreaked havoc across the Caribbean and the U.S. East Coast. By the time it made landfall in New Jersey on October 29, it had become the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, causing an estimated $70 billion in damages. The storm devastated parts of New York City, including Brooklyn’s Sea Gate community, where Carchidi was stationed. Police In Baltimore Super Storm's Impact On NYC. Read the supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium, Newsbreak and Blogspot. The destruction was unprecedented: Floodwaters surged into homes and businesses. Power outages lasted for weeks. Entire boardwalks were washed away in places like Seaside Heights and Belmar. More than 250 people lost their lives across eight countries, with nearly 150 casualties in the U.S. alone. As the storm bore down, the Sea Gate Police Department’s command post was destroyed by a massive boulder, leaving officers to fend for themselves in the chaos. Despite the harrowing conditions, Carchidi put his life on the line to save others. The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. During the height of the storm, Carchidi received an urgent call, two people were trapped inside a sinking van at Mermaid Avenue and W. 37th Street. With floodwaters already reaching eight feet, he waded, then swam through the raging current to reach the vehicle. Battling freezing water and fierce winds, he managed to rescue both occupants, pulling them to safety in a remarkable display of courage. Police In Baltimore Super Storm's Impact On NYC. But his night was far from over. As the storm continued its assault on the city, Carchidi would go on to make another daring rescue, saving two more lives before the night was through. Carchidi’s experiences in Baltimore, Montgomery County, and New York illustrate the physical and emotional toll of a life in law enforcement. The trauma of witnessing violence, coupled with the challenges of career-ending injuries, took a significant toll. Like many officers, he carried the weight of these experiences long after leaving the force. The impact of such events is often compounded by social media, with platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn serving as constant reminders of past traumas and lost colleagues. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. In an effort to shed light on the realities of policing, Carchidi authored the book, A Life in Law Enforcement: A Police Memoir-The Good, The Bad, The Corrupt. Through his writing, he shares not only the struggles of the profession but also the moments of triumph and heroism that define a career in law enforcement. Police In Baltimore Super Storm's Impact On NYC. Today, Carchidi’s story continues to be shared through various media platforms, including Apple and Spotify podcasts, where he discusses the highs and lows of his police career. Billy Bragg joins lizzie and Cindy on-board Cayamo to talk about songwriting, social justice, punk rock and, of course, The Little Guy (Bragg's nickname for Woody Guthrie). In our interview we talked about using humor as a way to connect to his audience, so that he can bring up his political activism like fighting for transgender rights, the importance of unions and abortion rights. It's interesting to hear how he wants the Americana audience to remain as relevant as he does. Billy talked about his place as a British artist in the genealogy of folk music and how working on Mermaid Avenue with Wilco allowed him to be a part of the folk tradition. He also shared how he overcame anxiety as a teenage musician. Standing in front of a crowd playing with his friends in a band really boosted his confidence. Meanwhile, the old school "stiff upper lip" of British culture created an emotional barrier between Billy's and his parents' generation. The older generation grew up with the cultural heritage of separating oneself from any emotion. When Billy was a teen, his father was dying. The doctor recommended not telling the patient or talking about it at all. Several decades later, his mother insisted that everyone talk to and about her terminal cancer diagnosis. Bragg also gets into the merits of socialism, why nostalgia rubs him the wrong way and his favorite English treat. Spoiler: It's marmite. In this episode we welcome the left's very own "national treasure" Billy Bragg – beamed in from his adopted Dorset – and ask him about the long and remarkable career that's enshrined in forthcoming box set The Roaring Forty. Billy revisits his Barking boyhood and early pop and folk influences, culminating in the 1977 formation of Clash-inspired punks Riff Raff. After a brief 1981 detour via the British Army, he explains how he settled on his unique solo style and delivery – and how he wound up on the cover of the NME in January 1984. Inevitably the conversation turns to politics and the way Billy has managed to retain his charm, humour and compassion in the face of hatred and extremism. An audio clip of Spectator editor Boris Johnson haranguing him at Glastonbury in 2000 is followed by discussion of left-wing patriotism, Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party and our present-day hyperpolarisation. Martin recalls the day Billy came to tea to ask about the RBP co-founder's father Bill and uncle Ken – and the catalytic impact Ken Colyer's Jazzmen had on the music Billy chronicled so impressively in his 2017 book Roots, Radicals and Rockers: How Skiffle Changed the World. From the Colyers and Lonnie Donegan we cross the big pond to talk about Woody Guthrie, the agit-folk bard whose lyrics Billy and Wilco turned into 1998's Mermaid Avenue album. Clips from Chris Smith's 1999 audio interview with Woody's daughter (and archivist) Nora Guthrie prompt conversation about the Okie icon's mighty legacy. After Mark quotes from recently-added articles about the Stooges, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Dr. Dre, Jasper wraps matters up with remarks on Truth Hurts and FKA Twigs. Many thanks to special guest Billy Bragg. For more about The Roaring Forty, as well as Roots, Radicals and Rockers, visit his website at billybragg.co.uk. Pieces discussed: Billy Bragg on the cover of the NME, Who the hell does Billy Bragg think he is?, Billy Bragg comes to tea, Nora Guthrie audio, Billy Bragg's Mermaid Avenue, The Stooges, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Dr. Dre, Truth Hurts and FKA Twigs.

God bless Billy Bragg, one of mankind's greatest gifts! The man has devoted his life to fighting for those that can't fight for themselves, to improving the planet and to inspiring all of us to get involved. We learn what actually motivates him is empathy and knowing that makes his mission even better. Last year he put out a new album called The Million Things That Never Happened that sees him looking at the world optimistically and this week he kicks off a North American tour. We also go deep on the Mermaid Avenue albums he made with Wilco, how those happened, working with Johnny Marr, and the stories behind many of his songs. Billy is a national treasure. www.billybragg.co.uk www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Season Two's theme is “Growing Up in Coney Island” through the decades, from the 1930s to the 21st century. More than a thousand families were able to move into the two brand-new city-owned projects, Gravesend Houses and Coney Island Houses. Others made do with seasonal bungalows and rooming houses as year-round homes. World-famous Steeplechase Park was their neighborhood playground and television was a popular new indoor pastime. The oral histories in Episode Three are with Susan Petersen Avitzour, Barbara Unterman Jones, Sheldon Krimsky, David Louie, Johanna Gargiulo Sherman, and Ronald Stewart. The lyrical subject matter gets very dark, which can be easily overlooked because many of the melodies are bright and poppy. This month on LTA, we will digress your mind with stories of murder, depression, and drug addiction. There you go...feel better? For episode 132 of Love That Album, I am joined by electronic music duo, Lovers and Poets ….oh yeah and the hosts of the wonderful All Time Top Ten podcast, Shannon Hurley and Ben Eisen to talk about Wilco's third album Summerteeth.Wilco are probably thought of mostly for their collaboration with Billy Bragg, “Mermaid Avenue” or for the stranger than fiction story surrounding the recording of their Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album. Summerteeth was YHF's predecessor and is often written off as a transitional album. As great as YHF is, Summerteeth is not transitional to anything – it's its own magnificent beast. The lyrical subject matter gets very dark, which can be easily overlooked because many of the melodies are bright and poppy. As wonderful as Wilco's catalogue is, they never made another album that sounded quite like this again. Of course, aside from Jeff Tweedy and John Stirrat, Wilco in 2020 is not the same band as Wilco of 1998.Ben, Shannon and I discuss band dynamics, musical contributions and the stories told on Summerteeth. I make a really large stretch in suggesting that the record is a concept album. Do I justify it? What are Ben and Shannon's thoughts? Tune in and find out.I am so hugely grateful for Ben and Shannon for having this great conversation with me. Check them out weekly on ATTT Podcast (wherever you get your podcasts, or from the website at https://alltimetopten.podomatic.com/). You can check out their musical collaborations from https://loversandpoets.com/ - listen to their music and smile. Also, in a cross podcast venture this month, I will be joining Ben on ATTT talking about the greatest cathartic albums. Wilco put out a new album in 2019 called Ode to Joy. To talk about it, Colin brings back historian and music expert Court Carney, a professor at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas and a longtime Wilco fan. Together, Colin and Court discuss not just Wilco's new record, but the band's 25 year history. Court was a fan of Uncle Tupelo, an early-90s southern Illinois alt-country band that featured songwriters Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar, who would go on to form, respectively, Wilco and Son Volt. Initially, Court was on "team Jay" before becoming enamored with Jeff Tweedy's music. Since putting out his first Wilco record, Tweedy has been involved in various side projects, including Golden Smog and Loose Fur, as well as the memorable Mermaid Avenue sessions, where Wilco and Billy Bragg interpreted unfinished Woody Guthrie songs. Tweedy has also done solo work by himself and with his son Spencer. But Wilco endures. And how has the sonic journey of Wilco compared to other great bands, such as the Beatles, Dylan, and Led Zeppelin? Does Wilco's recent work measure up to expectations? Whether or not you love the latest record, Wilco still loves you, baby.

My guest this month is the incredibly original singer, songwriter, author and activist, Billy Bragg. Bragg was the leading figure of the anti-folk movement of the '80s, and for most of the decade, he bashed out songs alone on his electric guitar, singing about politics and love. While his lyrics were bitingly intelligent and clever, they were also warm and humane, filled with detail and wit. Even though his lyrics were carefully considered, Bragg never neglected to write melodies for songs that were strong and memorable. With a strong DIY ethic and punk-rock attitude, Billy recorded an incredible body of work from the late 70's up through his recent collaborations with Joe Henry. Billy went from his obscure first recordings (which are awesome) through commercial success, working with artists like Paul Weller and Johnny Marr. Kirsty MacColl had a hit with "New England" and Billy's own solo recordings gained attention worldwide. Then in 1998, he teamed up with Wilco to record Mermaid Avenue, a collection of performances based on unreleased songs originally written by Woody Guthrie. That spawned 2 follow-up records that are all incredible documents of Americana. His latest records, "Tooth and Nail" and "Shine a Light: Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad" mark a new direction in his work and prove that he's as vital as ever. He has also recently released an incredible book that details the history of skiffle music in Britain entitled "Roots, Radicals and Rockers". Thanks go out to Joe Henry for introducing us, and please enjoy my conversation with Billy Bragg!
This week, we look back at July 24th, 1998 to discuss Mermaid Avenue from Billy Bragg & Wilco and Saving Private Ryan from director Steven Spielberg. With special guest, Jim Kelly. Mermaid Avenue Saving Private Ryan
Our final Mixed Up Confusion for Woody Guthrie month looks at Woody's influence beyond Bob Dylan and onward toward the future, with projects like Mermaid Avenue and others. Part 1 (3:00) looks at other artists interpretation of Woody, featuring: Donovan, Ani DiFranco, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Bruce Springsteen, Alison Krauss, Country Joe McDonald, Ry Cooder, Old Crow Medicine Show, U2, Jimmy LaFave and Odetta. Part 2 (14:00) concerns Billy Bragg and Wilco's 1998 MERMAID AVENUE and the utter brilliance of Woody as a tender hearted and quite romantic songwriter. Part. 3 (45:00) looks toward the future. We listen to songs by the Dropkick Murphy's and Anti-Flag and delve into the other album interpretations of Woody's words with the Klezmatics, Jonatha Brooke, and Jay Farrar and Company. Forgotten Silver (movie) John starts us off with a documentary that went direct to TV in New Zealand. It puts forward the tale of a kiwi inventor and filmmaker who actually was first in many fields. The documentary is a short project Peter Jackson put together after Heavenly Creatures and before he directed The Frighteners. The film uses all the common documentary tropes to paint a picture of a national hero. It is a complete fabrication. Forgotten Silver is available on iTunes and there are DVD copies out in the world. NEXT WEEK: We continue with a pick from Keith “Mermaid Avenue” a collection of Woody Guthrie songs brought to life by Billy Bragg and Wilco.
