Greetings! Happy Post-Birthday to Terry Riley! (June 24th) Enjoy an early composition from 1965 followed by a new composition honoring Terry Riley's, "Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band", the "B-side" of his classic release, "A Rainbow In Curved Air". " Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band" is a saxophone-based drone piece featuring tape loops and edits, drawing on Riley's all-night improvisatory performances in the 1960s. The balance of the program features the usual musical shenanigans you've come to know and love from Pushing The Envelope. Octavian Winters was formed in San Francisco, California in 2021 when Randy Gzebb (drums) and Stephan Salit (guitar), former bandmates in Thrill of The Pull, met up to discuss a film/television publishing deal for Thrill's catalog (a four-year licensing deal has since been finalized with Expressive Artists). A subsequent jam session produced several motifs, inspiring several more jams in the next weeks. Gzebb invited Ria Aursjoen (vocals, lyricist, Keyboards), whom he had met earlier via another project, to a session and the musical chemistry was immediately evident. Gzebb brought in Jay Denton (bass) to round out the lineup.Their debut EP , The Line Or Curve, is a mixed blend of ethereal, shoe gaze and darkwave genres, released via Stratis Capta Records and was produced by Octavian Winters and William Faith (The Bellwether Syndicate, Faith and the Muse, Christian Death, The March Violets) and recorded by Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto, Consolidated). ‘The Line or Curve' – references the idea of symbols and sigils, which are intricate collections of lines and curves. They are expressions, arrangements or gateways of energy and if correctly drawn they may invoke and transform. But the configuration of lines and curves is vital; if not right, a sigil is useless and has no power. So at each point you are choosing whether to draw a line, or a curve,” says Ria Aursjoen. Each member of Octavian Winters brings their own rich musical tapestry to the collective and have shared the stage with many iconic acts over the years, including Nine Inch Nails, Killing Joke, Lords of the New Church, Savage Republic, Christian Death, The Frozen Autumn, Everything Goes Cold and Black Tape for a Blue Girl, just to name a few.https://octavianwinters.comhttps://octavianwinters.bandcamp.comQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on ModSnap Radio | KMOD: San Antonio3pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)Follow me on my other social media sites :Website: https://djnocturna.comRadio: https://modsnapradio.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/nocturna.remixed/Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/djnocturna/

When he was a young teen, Oscar Herrera (Former lead singer with The Sleep of Reason, Halo, El Duende and Black Tape for a Blue Girl) discovered the Beatles and there was no looking back. When he and his wife had children they made sure that music - and especially the Beatles - was front-and-center in their lives. For this special episode, Oscar is joined by his daughter Danielle Herrera as they unpack some songs from the Fab Four's 1968 release 'The Beatles' aka The White Album. Along the way they are both amused and slightly confused by Rob's lack of familiarity with the record, and it's a super-fun conversation! I'm So Tired - Alex Chilton; These Fleeting Moments, She's Gone - Black Tape For A Blue Girl; Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Back In The U.S.S.R. - The Beatles; California Girls - The Beach Boys; Dear Prudence - Siouxsie & The Banshees; Dear Prudence - The Beatles; You Shouldn't Be So Sad - The Kinks; Sand and Foam - Donovan; Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da Story (part 1) - Jimmy Scott; Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da - The Beatles; Goo Goo Itch - DEVO; The Continuing Story Of Buffalo Bill, While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles; What Is Life - George Harrison; Happiness Is A Warm Gun - The Breeders; Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Martha My Dear, Blackbird, Piggies, Rocky Raccoon, I Will, Julia, Sexie Sadie - The Beatles; Mr Blue Sky - E.L.O.; Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey, Helter Skelter - The Beatles; Helter Skelter - Siouxsie & The Banshees; Revolution, Revolution 1, Cry Baby Cry, Revolution 9, Good Night - The Beatles; Good Night - Linda Ronstadt

When you were in high school what did you want to be when you grew up? Were the seeds planted for what you eventually would be doing, or did you take a completely different path? Today my guest and I are going to look back at 40 years and compare experiences. Way back in the 70's and 80's, when I was growing up in South Florida, I went to school with a lot of the same kids from elementary school through high school. Sam Rosenthal was one of those kids and I thought it would be fun to check in with him ( 40 years later) and ask him what his perspective is on life. I thought he was a pretty cool guy back then and I'm happy to report he still is. Listen in and see where life took both of us. Troy Marks is a living legend when it comes to being a part of the New Orleans Heavy Metal music scene as the vocalist for Razor White. To me, nobody did it better than Razor White. I know some will say Lillian Axe did but honestly, I LOVE them but it was the Razor that pumped me up like no other. In 1988, Razor White released a 5 song demo that became known as "The Black Tape" that featured five amazing songs. Razor White followed it up with a full length called Just What The Doctor Ordered and then disbanded not long after it's release in 1991. 35 years later, vocalist/songwriter Troy Marks announced that both the The Black Tape and Just What the Doctor Ordered will be re-released via Lost Real Records and I was beside myself! Being an old buddy of mine, I reached out to Troy and got him to talk about this huge news. As always, it was an absolute blast talking to him about the old days of the New Orleans music scene, the releases, and even the possibility seeing these songs re-visited in a live setting.

Mournful...plaintive...melancholy...somber...sonorous...resonant: the cello is all this and more — a compact, versatile string orchestra in one instrument, with a four-octave range that comes fully alive in the dark days of autumn. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an autumn journey featuring the plangent tones of the cello, on a program called "CELLO ELEGIES 2." Music is by DAVID DARLING, HANS CHRISTIAN, MAYA BEISER, BLACK TAPE for a BLUE GIRL, ERALDO BERNOCCHI & HOSHIKO YAMANE, JESSE AHMANN, MAX RICHTER, and MARCELLO DE FRANCISCI. Jace chats with writer/artist Dan Panosian about an upcoming project from AWA Studios that combines many of Dan's favorite things. Set in the late 60's, that tumult of that time period is perfectly suited for a story combing horror, rock and roll with some Kung Fu thrown in for good measure. Jace and Dan discuss choosing this specific time period for the story, how you can find the light by coming through the darkness, the incredible art of his collaborator on the project, Dalibor Talajic and a whole lot more. Final Order cut-off is January 9, 2023, so tell your retailer to order you a copy now!
Today's guest deejay is Sam Rosenthal. I invited Sam to guest deejay on Soundwave because he is the founder of Projekt Records. I didn't ask Sam because Projekt explores genres of music I love, such as ambient, darkwave, and goth, although that's part of it. No, it's because Sam has been running Projekt and releasing breathtaking music for nearly 40 years! For a lot of us, Projekt has become an institution. It feels like it's always been a part of our lives. Incredibly, I've been listening to music released by Projekt for nearly half my life. Sam's Black Tape for a Blue Girl has always been a favorite. Steve Roach, of course, who makes an appearance on today's mix. And I've been listening to Anji Bee and Ryan Lum's Lovespirals for years. And so many compilation albums. I fully expect Sam will be releasing more music from Projekt well into the middle of the 21st century. And Sam will be the house deejay at my funeral. Wow, that got dark. Sam, I hope you took that in the spirit that was intended. Sam has some words about his mix below. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be DJ Bulut. See you then. I put together a mix of tracks selected from the 600+ electronic/ambient/drone albums released on Projekt over the last 39 years (founded in 1983!) Three are my collaborations with label artists; for the other four, rather than selecting “hits” I programmed deep tracks that I quite enjoy. With over 50 releases on Projekt in 2022 there is an abundance of wonderful music to chose from. My intention for Soundwave was to create an hour flow of the mood of Projekt — an exploration and overview for listeners discovering the label for the first time. 404.zero, Solace Road, Ocoeur, Steve Roach & Michael Stearns, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Brian Eno, Terminus Void, Marcus Denight, Endless Melancholy, Stellardrone, Suso Saiz, Meg Bowles, The Expanding Universe, Vangelis. We were thrilled to have Sam Rosenthal of Projekt Records, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, and more join us to head down atmospheric dark ambient branches. Sam has been operating since the early 80s and shares his thoughts on his own work, the artists that were part of the label, and how the music landscape has changed. An insightful history shadowy world of Projekt Records.
Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 209 features an interview with Sam Rosenthal and Jon DeRosa of Black Tape For A Blue Girl. There's no easy way to describe the music of Black Tape For A Blue Girl. The band call what they do "ethereal darkwave" and "neo-classical", but also have a healthy following from fans of goth rock, neo-folk, and drone. I spoke with Black Tape For A Blue Girl founder/instrumentalist Sam Rosenthal and vocalist Jon DeRosa about how they met, and the circumstances that led Jon to become the band's new lead singer. We also discussed how the 13th BTFABG album The Cleft Serpent came together while the members were in three separate locations, as well as the narrative and characters that drive the album. My thanks to Sam and Jon for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. Music In This Episode: "Remnants of a Deeper Purity" taken from the album Remnants of a Deeper Purity "The Trickster" "Ares & Hermes" taken from the album The Cleft Serpent "So Tired Of Our History (Instrumental Mix)" taken from the album The Instrumental Serpent "Tear Love from My Mind" taken from the album A Chaos of Desire Thanks for listening! The Cleft Serpent is the 13th album of Black Tape For A Blue Girl. The two-CD edition which is also available on vinyl, minidisc, cassette and digital format is one of Projekt Records' ' founder Sam Rosenthal's latest production. Black Tape For A Blue Girl began over thirty years ago by Rosenthal's exploration of brooding extended electronics and strings meshed with deeply revealing lyrics and darkly textured, melodramatic vocal performances. The ethereal, gothic and dark ambient stylings has made the band one of the originators of the American darkwave genre. Rosenthal's pensive electronics and revelatory songwriting has made fans of director David Lynch, former adult actress Sasha Grey, writers Poppy Z. Brite and Caitlín Rebekah Kiernan, just to name a few.The latest album weaves the tale of the enigmatic Cleft Serpent, as we follow him through time and space within a lush, dark and sensual musical palette of string-hued Neo-Classicism. It's rich and engaging, created by our three-piece ensemble featuring new members, Jon DeRosa's powerful vocals and Henrik Meierkord's mournful cello strings twined around Rosenthal's somber electronics. https://www.projekt.comhttps://blacktapeforabluegirl.bandcamp.comSubscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:http://eepurl.com/gtw6PPQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on MODSNAP Alternative RadioKMOD: San AntonioListen : http://modsnapradio.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.com3pm to 5pm (HST/Hawaii Standard Time)5pm to 7pm (PST/Pacific Standard Time)6pm to 8pm (MST/ Mountain Standard Time)7pm to 9pm (CST/Central Standard Time)8pm to 10pm (EST/Eastern Standard Time

Hailing from Coventry England, Attrition is one of the pioneers in dark electronic music in the UK. The band, founded by the talented Martin Bowes in 1980, emerged from the experimental post-punk scene of the early 80s, alongside with other influential groups such as Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey and the Legendary Pink Dots. Bowes' early beginnings was when he started a xeroxed fanzine called Alternative Sounds in Coventry England in 1979, running 18 issues. It was then when he decided to form Attrition. With an amazing catalog of music, Bowes continues to tour with Attrition, producing music and remixing tracks for various artists such as Nine Inch Nails, Die Form, Pigface, Black Tape for a Blue Girl and so much more.Attrition's latest single, "The Great Derailer' to be released on EP is coming soon !Photo by Tracy Chan, taken at the 4th Annual Hawaii Horror Ball concert in September 2017.www.attrition.co.ukhttp://attritionuk.bandcamp.com/www.thecagestudios.co.uk
Listen to my interview with the amazingly diverse, Athan Maroulis, record producer and eclectic vocalist of goth industrial band Spahn Ranch, Projekt’s Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Fahrenheit 451, Blue Dahlia and most recent, NOIR. From his early industrial, goth rock days to vocal jazz, Maroulis is best-known for his position as lead singer of the industrial/goth/darkwave band Spahn Ranch. He has done a lot of producing through the 35 years or so, remix works, liner notes with Cleopatra Records and Projekt Records and as a publicist for Metropolis Records. He returns in 2019 with his new EP, A Pleasure.
