GUEST: Plainsong/Matthews' Southern Comfort/Fairport Convention's Iain ( aka Ian) Matthews. In this epysode of Vinyl Relics, we delve into "In Search of Amelia Earhart", the 1972 debut album by British folk-rock group Plainsong. Blending historical reference with lyrical introspection, the album offers a unique lens on myth, memory, and the cultural echo of one of the 20th century's most enigmatic figures. With exclusive commentary from bandleader Iain Matthews, together we walk through the album's narrative themes, compositional style, and contextual relevance within the early '70s folk revival. Ian offers firsthand insight into the album's creation, intent, and enduring resonance. I hope you dig "In Search Of Amelia Earhart" as much as I do. -Farmer John ===CONNECT & SUPPORT=== Transport yourself into the realm of grooviness by supporting us on Patreon using this link --> patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Use this link to follow us on Facebook --> https://www.facebook.com/farmerjohnmusic/ Use this link to follow us on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/vinyl.relics.podcast/ Use this link to follow us on TikTok --> https://www.tiktok.com/@vinylrelicspodcast Use this link to follow us on BlueSky --> https://bsky.app/profile/farmerjohnmusic.bsky.social And find us on X here --> @VinylRelicsPod Email me here --> farmerjohnmusic@gmail.com ===THE MUSIC=== Songs used in this Epysode, in order of appearance. Iain Matthews fronted the influential British band, Fairport Convention for their first three albums before embarking on a solo career that's lasted almost 60 years. With Matthews Southern Comfort he scored a hit cover version of Joni Mitchell's “Woodstock” in 1970, had a solo hit in 1979 with “Shake It,” and the Eagles' borrowed his arrangement of the Steve Young song, “Seven Bridges Road” for their live album. After saying he was done making solo albums, here he is with How Much is Enough, on Sunset Boulevard Records. Whether this is his last, who knows? But it's damn good to hear him again.
Iain Matthews was an early member of the pioneering British folk-rock band Fairport Convention, singing on its first two albums and leaving during the recording of the third one, Unhalfbricking. Since then this singer-songwriter has formed other bands — Matthews Southern Comfort, Plainsong — and released much solo work, including the just-released How Much Is Enough. He has scored some hits — Southern Comfort's cover of Joni Mitchell's “Woodstock,” his 1979 solo song “Shake It”—and says he has recorded about 70 albums total, all projects included. So he has many tales to tell —about the Fairport years with Richard Thompson, Judy Dyble and Sandy Denny and his break from the group; the many places he has lived and whether they had an impact on his music; his years as an A&R rep; and that vocal arrangement of his that the Eagles borrowed without credit. Iain Matthews contemplates retirement and, instead, writes a song about it, adding to his discography of nearly 60 albums. Denny, who's been a fan since the beginning of Matthews' career, from Fairport Convention to solo to Matthews Southern Comfort, gets Iain talking about Joni Mitchell, Robert Plant, and in a totally unplanned moment, Amelia Earhart. ¿No habías nacido? ¿Dónde estabas el año que mataron a John Lennon? ¿Qué estabas haciendo en 1980? ¿Qué música escuchabas, a qué conciertos fuiste? Today's program features tuneage from (not in order of appearance) Orleans,Todd Rundgren, Jay Ferguson, Iain Matthews, The Smiths, Alan Parsons Project, Tears For Fears, Simon & Garfunkel, Doobie Brothers, Coldplay, Pat Metheny, Pink Floyd, America, Radiohead, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Cream, The Hollies, Jeff Beck, Stephen Stills, Joe Walsh, Genesis, Gordon Lightfoot, Steve Stills, The Police, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Traffic and The Who.
Iain Matthews first gained attention as a founding member and vocalist for the innovative Fairport Convention's first three albums, changing the voice of folk music in his country. He moved on to create Matthews' Southern Comfort, exploring his interest in American music. They had a No 1 hit in the UK with Joni Mitchell's ‘Woodstock'. Never one to stand still for very long Iain moved on during the 1970's with another group, Plainsong. An ensemble that allowed Iain to blossom as a songwriter and acoustic guitarist – supported by his ex-Fairport mates Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson both in the studio and in Richard's case on tour. Between his own solo recording and various Plainsong line-ups Iain released ten albums to critical acclaim including another well known Top Ten US hit with the single ‘Shake It'.During the early 1980's Matthews turned towards the business side of musicas a rep for Island Records, but was persuaded by Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin to get back to making music. He returned to the USA for more solo work and Plainsong records. During this period he recorded a wonderful version of Peter Gabriel's ‘Mercy Street”, contributed to a Phil Ochs's Tribute album and recorded plus toured with Nanci Griffith. Next he released another respected record with the somewhat sarcastic title “Excerpts from Swine Lake”.In 2000 Matthews settled in the Netherlands and found a busy, happy life in Europe with more touring of the UK and continent. Yet more well received collaborative recordings were issued including a Tribute album to Sandy Denny. Since then Matthews has found one of his most sympathetic musical companions the pianist Egbert Derix. However Matthews feels he has finally found an almost perfect musical sweet spot, playing solo, in support of his most recent solo album ‘A Baker's Dozen”. As his 50 years (can this be true) in the business prove, things do come around again and again…. and Iain Matthews, guitar in hand and songs springing from his muse, is available for bookings..http://iainmatthews.nl/
