GARY WRIGHT 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' EPISODE 4 with RAY SHASHO Gary Wright (April 26, 1943 – September 4, 2023)   Gary Wright is a celestial keyboard virtuoso, idyllic songwriter, and vocalist with powerful soulful pipes. Wright is an innovator of the synthesizer and over the years has managed to condense his many synthesized melodies into a single keyboard strapped around his neck. Although born and raised in Cresskill, New Jersey, Wright founded the British rock group Spooky Tooth in 1967. Wright would later become most recognized for his two solo hit singles “Dream Weaver” in 1975 and “Love Is Alive” in 1976.  Gary Wright will be joining the ‘Sail Rock 2013' tour along with Christopher Cross, Orleans, Firefall, John Ford Coley, Robbie Dupree and Player beginning August 5th in West Allis, Wisconsin. Visit Pollstar.com for all the latest concert dates.  SPOOKY TOOTH: Gary Wright joined the band 'Art' in 1967. The ‘V.I.P.'S' morphed into 'Art' after several lineup changes since its inception in 1963. The British R&B music ensemble had featured various distinguished musicians including Mike Harrison, Greg Ridley, Jimmy Henshaw, Keith Emerson, Luther Grosvenor, Walter Johnstone and Mike Kellie.  Keith Emerson (The Nice, ELP) left in 1967 when the name was changed to Art. The band eventually turned into Spooky Tooth with a lineup of Wright (organ, keyboards, and vocals), Harrison (vocals, keyboards) Ridley (bassist), Grosvenor (guitar, vocals) and Kellie (drums). In 1968, Spooky Tooth released their debut album entitled … It's All About. The album featured covers by Janis Ian and Bob Dylan. Most of the other tracks were either written or co-written by Gary Wright. The bands next release Spooky Two (1969) released on Island Records was hailed by critics as one of their finest recordings. The album featured many of the bands standards including “Evil Woman” and “Better by You, Better Than Me” a tune written by Wright and eventually covered by Judas Priest in 1978. Spooky Tooth quickly became a highly sought concert attraction and a mainstay on progressive rock radio. The band shared the stage with such legendary music acts as Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones. Bassist Greg Ridley left in 1969 to join Humble Pie, Andy Leigh replaced him.  Also in 1969, the group released Ceremony (Spooky Tooth and Pierre Henry album) a progressive collaboration with the French electronic composer. Session musician: Wright left Spooky Tooth briefly to produce albums for Traffic and Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller and his production company. Gary Wright became an esteemed session musician and was asked to play on George Harrison's triple- album set All Things Must Pass (1970). Wright and Harrison began a long lasting friendship and musical collaboration that included Wright playing or sharing songwriting tasks on several of Harrison's subsequent albums including … Living in the Material World (1973), Dark Horse (1974), Extra Texture (Read All About It)(1975), Thirty Three & 1/3(1976), George Harrison(1979), Cloud Nine (1987). The Last Puff album (1970) primarily featured Mike Harrison while Wright focused on other projects. The release featured an incredible cover version of The Beatles, “I Am The Walrus.” Joe Cocker Grease Band members Henry McCullough, Chris Stainton and Alan Spenner were brought into the studio to work on the album. In 1971, Gary Wright performed “Two Faced Man” with George Harrison on the Dick Cavett Show. He also played piano on Harry Nilsson's #1 hit, a Badfinger cover tune entitled, “Without You.” In 1972, Gary Wright and Mike Harrison reformed Spooky Tooth with a different lineup. The new lineup featured future Foreigner founder and guitarist Mick Jones. Subsequent Spooky Tooth albums … (You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw (1973), Witness (1973), The Mirror (1974) and Cross Purpose (1999) (Reunion album without Wright, Greg Ridley returned). Spooky Tooth disbanded in 1974. Gary Wright and George Harrison visited India in 1974 as a guest of Ravi Shankar. Wright developed a long-term relationship with Shankar after the visit. SOLO CAREER: Gary Wright released two critically acclaimed solo albums on A&M Records … Extraction in 1971 and Footprint in 1972. Wright signed a record deal with Warner Brothers Records in 1974 and achieved his biggest commercial success with the release of The Dream Weaver album (1975). The single “Dream Weaver” reached #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart and #1 on the Cash Box charts. The album also spawned the hit “Love is Alive” (1976) reaching #2 on Billboard's singles chart. The album peaked at #7 on Billboard's Hot 100 albums chart. The song “Dream Weaver” has been spotlighted on numerous television shows and motion pictures. “Love is Alive” was covered by several legendary artists including … Chaka Khan, Joe Cocker and Richie Havens.  The Dream Weaver album featured guest musicians …guitarist Ronnie Montrose, drummers Jim Keltner and Andy Newmark, Hammond organist David Foster and Bobby Lyle on additional synthesizers. In 1981, Gary Wright scored again commercially with “Really Wanna Know You” (#16 Billboard Singles Hit). Gary Wright Solo albums … Extraction (1971), Footprint (1972), The Dream Weaver (1975), The Light of Smiles(1977), Touch and Gone (1978), Headin' Home (1979), The Right Place (1981), Who I Am (1988), First Signs of Life (1995), Human Love (1999), Waiting to Catch the Light (2008), The Light of a Million Suns (EP) (2008), Connected (2010). In 2004, Wright, Harrison and Kellie reunited Spooky Tooth for several concerts in Germany. As a result of their triumphant return, they released the Nomad Poets DVD in 2007. The same lineup played a series of European dates in 2008. Most recently: Gary Wright toured with Ringo Starr and His All-Star Band in 2008. In 2010, Wright released his latest studio album entitled Connected and features guest artists … Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. Gary Wright is currently writing his 'memoir' for the Penguin Group and should be available sometime near the end of 2014. I had the great pleasure of chatting with Gary Wright recently about ‘Sail Rock 2013,' Spooky Tooth, George Harrison, the music business, metaphysics and much-much more.   Support us on PayPal!

The ending of the song I Am The Walrus is one of the most mysterious and intriguing parts of the Beatles' catalogue. It features a mix of nonsense lyrics, random sound effects, and a snippet of a BBC radio broadcast of Shakespeare's King Lear. Some people claim that the version of the song on the new Red and Blue album, a compilation of remastered Beatles hits released in 2023, differs from the original version that appeared on the Magical Mystery Tour EP and album in 1967. They say that the vocals are clearer and more isolated, and that some of the background noises are different or removed. To test this claim, we have isolated the vocals from the ending of the song. Here is what we found: The vocals are indeed more audible and less distorted than the original version. This is probably due to the improved sound quality and remastering process of the new album. The lyrics are still mostly nonsensical, but some of them can be deciphered more easily. For example, a French voice talks about the 'nouvelle republique' and the Vietnam war.  The radio broadcast of King Lear is also the same, but it is slightly more synchronized with the vocals. The broadcast was recorded by John Lennon from a transistor radio that he randomly tuned in while recording the song. The broadcast features the lines “O, untimely death!” and “I know thee well: a serviceable villain”, spoken by the characters of Edgar and Gloucester, respectively. In conclusion, the version of I Am The Walrus on the new Red and Blue album does have some differences from the original version. The mystery remains whether the words that we can now hear are added new, or that they existed in the original but were mixed so low that we can't distinguish them.

Not all greatest hits albums are for house-people and little thems. Some, like “1967-1970” (and its red, commie companion) are as essential as the bands they represent. This week, the Twerk Twins dish deep on the packaging, origin, and legacy of these history-making collections and their 2023 remixes, and also ask:

When you are all stuffed up with a cold or the flu or Covid, it can be very hard to sleep because you can't breathe. This episode begins with some excellent ways to open things up so you can breathe better and get some rest. http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/features/cold-relief-6-sleep-tips-to-help-youbreathe-easi There are a lot of ways to experience that sense of awe and wonder. And it turns out that the experience is really good for you both mentally and physically. Joining me to discuss the science of awe is Dacher Kelter. He is a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley and author of the book Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life (https://amzn.to/3YYVMvh). Listen and you will be seeking out and finding awe a lot more often. Here is the website he references in the interview: https://ggia.berkeley.edu/ Every song has a story – often several stories. Listen and hear the stories behind some of the most famous and loved songs including You're So Vain, Yesterday, Satisfaction, I Am The Walrus and others. My guest is music critic David Cheal who works at The Financial Times in London and is coauthor of the book The Life of a Song: The Stories Behind 100 of the World's Best Loved Songs (https://amzn.to/3jIUvbp) Sticking to New Year's resolutions or to any big change is hard. And there's actually a good reason why that is. Listen as I explain why change is hard and a better way to make a change that is more likely to stick. Steven Cockcroft, co-host of the tremendous Nothing Is Real podcast, joins Tyler this week to delve into the many connections between the Beatles and the Goons. A major influence on all four Fabs - especially John - The Goon Show ran until 1960 but Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan were to go on and develop friendships with all the Beatles and even work with them professionally (notably Sellers and Ringo appearing together in The Magic Christian). Tyler and Steven try to identify as many connections as they can (no matter how tenuous!) and among the things they touch on are: Spike & Across The Universe; George Martin; Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds; Richard Lester; Sellers in Get Back; The Beatles Cartoon; Paul's poem to Spike; I Am The Walrus; George and Peter in Disneyland; Sellers does A Hard Day's Night; The Grandma Awards; The Goon Show Scripts; You Know My Name Look Up The Number; Unchained Melody; Spike and The Primal Scream; The Nerk Twins... and much much more! It's a fun conversation which anybody with even a passing interest in the Goons and/or the Beatles will enjoy! (And it wasn't until the show was edited and in the can that Tyler realised that the young John Lennon could not have possibly seen Idiot Weekly or A Show Called Fred on television as these were only screened in the London region - HOWEVER, he *could* have seen Son Of Fred as apparently that show was screened in the North in late 1956!) JP en ik hebben mekaar leren kennen in 2014. We hebben 3 lange avonden gebabbeld, op het voetpad voor zijn winkel. Het ging over maatschappij, politiek, kunst, filosofie. En The Beatles. Hello Friends, and today we're going with a slightly controversial option, and that is The Beatles 1967 US-Only LP 'Magical Mystery Tour'. Originally released as a double EP in the UK (as well as a number of places in the rest of the world), the US rejigged the track order, and filled Side 2 with the non-LP songs from earlier in the year. While another Capitol Hodge-Podge, this album works extremely well, and has now been assimilated into the official catalog, and so today, we're going to be looking at all 11 tracks from this wonderful beastie. With far too many mixes of I Am The Walrus, along with a couple of later mixes from the 70s to bump things up, let's hop on the Coach and go off to meet the Fool on the Hill.   Happy Listening,   Frederick   Support the show and get hours of extra content at: https://www.patreon.com/backtomono Email the show at: backtomonoradio@gmail.com Listen to companion podcast Back to Mono: https://www.mixcloud.com/backtomonoradio/playlists/back-to-mono-complete/  Find me on Instagram @hypnoticfred Join the Facebook Community here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/backtomono

On Sunday April 16th, 1972 the Electric Light Orchestra made their debut at a small pub in Croydon London called The Fox Hounds. Formed in the autumn of 1970 in Birmingham, England their mission was to pick up where the Beatles song "I Am The Walrus" left off. They wanted to create modern rock and pop songs with classical overtones, combine rock and roll instruments like the electric guitar, bass, guitar and keyboards with classical instruments like the French horn, the the cello and the violin. They also wanted to accomplish what the Fab Four hadn't - take that same music created in the studio and effectively present it in a live setting as well. Lofty dreams that proved to be much more difficult than anticipated. But with a lot of hard work, a bit of trial and error and a determination to make it work the Electric Light Orchestra, later to be known by most as simply ELO would go on to sell over 50 million records worldwide. From 1972 to 1986, the band accumulated 27 top 40 songs on the UK Singles Chart and 15 top 20 songs on the US Billboard Hot 100. They became Rock and Roll Hall of Famers in 2017.In this episode you'll hear the story of how the band formed, their slow rise to success first in the US, eventually around the world, what led to the band's decline and disbanding in the mid 80s to their eventual return in the 2000s. Ep24 of TSORR Radio Show took to the air on a chilly winters night in Midrand Johannesburg on 21 June 2019.  The thing I love about Radio is that things do not go as planned.  The State of the Nation address by the President of South Africa took place earlier that night and I started the show mentioning that instead of blasting into full throttle R ‘n' R it would be more fitting to start with Running To The Edge Of The World, Marilyn Manson's apocalyptic slow burning anthem of death and destruction.  The intro was great but it didn't record so the show starts abruptly in the middle of Manson's masterpiece.  Now you know why :-)After that it is was full blast, up tempo, two fisted rock and roll with Dio.  For a while the song titles did indicate the heavy smog of politics, (Digging My Own Grave & The Joker & The Thief), but I cleared the air with Bowie's Move On and then one last crazy bit of technical mayhem before settling in for a smooth run.  Check out the outro solo on James Reyne's Ain't it Always the Way, one of the best ever for pure emotion and the intersection between I Am The Walrus and Time is just great radio.   Among others the show featured The Winery Dogs, Stone Sour, Megadeth, Joe Jackson, Motorhead, David Bowie,  James Reyne, Marilyn Manson, Judas Priest, Joe Bonamassa, Wolfmother, Clutch, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Five Finger Death Punch, Dio, Anti-Flag, Steve Earle, Dokken, Jimi Hendrix, Stiff Little Fingers, In Flames.  The South African contributions came from The Black Cat Bones, Springbok Nude Girls and Jack Hammer.

The Beatles were never an overly self-referential band.  However, there are a few instances:  All You Need is Love,  I Am The Walrus, Glass Onion, perhaps What Goes On.     However, once they were no longer band-mates. each of the four would reference the group, the individual members, and songs from the Fabs (even releasing a sequel or two) on any number of occasions.    This week we look into some of the references, and build a playlist for those of you looking for a deeper dive.

As you listeners will remember, Dave had a lot to say about the Beatles well beyond the parameters of that TV show. Well he’s back, and the subject we set out to discuss was the Beatles’ use of acoustic instruments – something Dave is well-versed in. But as conversations will, we went far afield from that, covering subjects ranging from sincerity to darkness versus happiness to re-arranging songs on the fly to what the Beatles were doing alongside their contemporaries. And as the momentum mounted, I realized that there were more things discussed than any one show could reasonably contain. SARAH MCQUAID is a gifted and captivating performer whose warm, haunting alto is delicately cradled by her "sparkling guitar" (Sing Out!). She is both song crafter and song collector, equally at home with traditional Irish and Appalachian folk songs, Elizabethan ballads and 1930s jazz numbers. She is also renowned for her guitar work and is the author of acclaimed The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book. Her musical output is a direct and unfolding reflection of her own eclectic background: Sarah was born in Spain, raised in Chicago, holds dual US and Irish citizenship, and currently lives in rural England. Her new album, "The Plum Tree and the Rose," represents a departure from Sarah's previous albums, which focused on her arrangements of traditional material, in that nine of its thirteen tracks are originals. PERT NEAR SANDSTONE emerged from the same roots-based musical hotbed in Minneapolis that gave birth to Bob Dylan, The Jayhawks and Spider John Koerner. Originally formed by four friends from the same hometown, Pert Near Sandstone formed unintentionally over weekly, whiskey-fueled picking sessions in an old house in St. Paul, MN.The band rejuvenates American stringband music with raw energy; they play tightly-crafted original material that lends itself to the modern audience, as well as being stewards of the old-time and bluegrass traditions. Check out their high octane version of The Beatles "I Am The Walrus. The band's latest release is "Paradise Hop."
