I'm elated to introduce Brittney Bearden to The CVASPS family in this week's episode of The Podcast. Britt has done some fantastic work with our guys over the past three years helping them to transform their nutrition routines. In the 33-minute discussion Brittney and I get into: 1) What drove her to go into sports nutrition and how the education steps to get licensed impacted how she practices today. 2) What is truly involved in how we select food, and how important it is to individualize nutrition programs based on the specific athlete. 3) The value in understanding where the athlete is in their nutrition voyage, and working with them to build from there. 4) Where the “line” is for where strength coaches may step out of their scope of practice, and what issues could arise if we over step our boundaries. A huge thank you to Brittney Bearden for joining us today. She has been a huge addition to our group and has done great work helping our guys better understand how they fuel themselves, and also puts out awesome stuff so make sure you give her a follow @sportrdbritt on Instagram. After a brief run down of how he got to ASU he dives right into his initial onboarding evaluations, including the what’s and why’s behind the evaluations, moments he observes, and metrics he looks at. He then shares with us how these impact their training and how understanding the psychological aspect of who the athlete is can help drive training decisions and improve buy in. Marsh then dives into the role of strengths and weaknesses in athletes, and where those can drive training for athletes. We finish off talking about a different topic, cooking, and how that was almost a different career path for Daniel. Enjoy the content? Then you should check out The Strength Coach Network! Recently I had the opportunity to talk eastern medicine with Mike Guadango. After a intro how Mike got into training, we dive right into where the idea of acupuncture came from. This leads us down the rabbit hole of what acupuncture has taught him about what we, as coaches, can do better. Many of these issues revolve around our need to prove our worth, driving us to push athletes further then may be required for elite performance. These lessons stem from his time working with elite and pro athlete’s and seeing how doing work with them to feel better was more impactful for performance then any key performance indicators we tie to training. We finish off discussing the role of teaching skills in training, and where we may or may not truly make an impact. This week I had the opportunity to discuss the development of a long term athletic development model with Rick Franzblau. After a quick run down of how he got down to Clemson we discuss how longevity in one location has helped us each develop the thoughts and processes that we are trying to continue to build upon at our institutions. He then shares with us how the model that he’s working on at Clemson got started, includes what was the driving factor behind the evolutions to this model. He then shares with us a pretty in-depth breakdown of their progressions in their model, where there are some places where they individualize the program, and how different teams move at different paces. He also runs down the rabbit hole of technology, the pros and con’s of it, and the importance of the strength coach understanding what the metrics mean and how to impact them. Rick has developed an ever evolving but scaleable LTAD program, and gives some really great insight into each aspect of it that can really help each of us reflect a bit on what we are doing and possible ways to improve how we evaluate what we are doing. This week I have the absolute pleasure to catch up with Jill Zeller and talk about professional growth. After a quick run down of how she got out to USC we get into our evolutions as coaches. This leads her to her pillars of training and why having these as your totem to fall back on is so important. Tying into that we discuss mentors, what they have taught her, and things she has brought from each of her stops on the way out to LA. She then dives into how being a single sport strength coach helped her learn better ways to find solutions to make sure the team is moving in the right direction. After a brief run down of how Karim got to Vald, we dive into how being a coach first has impacted how he views the “tech” and the metrics that he utilizes to assess athletes. This includes his three step model that he looks at when discussing monitoring decisions with coaches and athletes. He also shares with us examples of metrics he would look at for athletes in sports, and what those metrics would mean to him and the athlete that he is assessing. Next, Karim discusses the role of collaboration, why he feels it’s so important, and where he’s seen successes and failures with it. Karim is a fantastic resource, not just because of his knowledge, which is world class, but also his experience as a coach make his insight absolutely priceless when it comes to monitoring metrics and how “the team behind the team” can work together to find better ways to be better for their athletes. He shares with us some of the extra roles he had at Coppin last year, and how he’s been able to maximize his role as a performance coach. Having to do some extraneous work initially at this position has been a huge learning experience for him, and one that he’s taken many positives away from that have helped him become a better. I had the pleasure of sitting down to discuss the evolution from an athlete to a coach with Jena Ready in this weeks episode of The Podcast. The conversation starts right out with how she got into training, the role of her first strength coach in her love of the weight room, and how being a student athlete impacted her decision to become a coach. We then discuss the power of being given a chance, and how having the opportunity to be a head coach at a young age really helped us both evolve at a greater pace than we would have expected. We then go into how being involved with a large number of teams was vital to set the groundwork for our ability to dedicate our time to one team and provide more value. We finish off discussing what her experience as a college lacrosse player impacted her in both personally and as a coach. Enjoy the content? Then you should check out The Strength Coach Network! I’m a family guy, someone who takes care of my family and I like to translate that to my kids at school. 1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career? Coming to CVASPS and meeting Dr. Yessis made me question how we were training our high school athletes. 2) If you could ask one question and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why? Did I make a difference in kids lives? What happened with the election? 3) What’s your escape? I enjoy digging into politics and dive into my own faith. Enjoy the content? “I’m not going to train those kids like powerlifters, I’m going to take some principles from the powerlifting side and apply it.” This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. I had the pleasure of sitting down and discussing training and running a powerlifting team with Guillermo Blanco in this weeks episode of The Podcast. After a run down of how he got to McKendree we roll right into the world of D2 sports, and how there are similarities and differences to both D3 and D1. This leads into a great discussion about what he feels his most important role is in the training process, any why he feels it’s so important. We then discuss the team he is a head coach for, the Powerlifting team. This includes the training and meet program, how that is set up through out the year, and how academics impact this year round sport. Guillermo’s coaching and the uniqueness of a powerlifting team is great insight into how we can work better to develop better training, and even use their “ideas” to provide better means for our athlete’s to improve. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share three different ways we are looking at doing just that, that hopefully can even drive better conversations and more collaboration in the athlete’s general physical preparation phase.
