If you loved Sinners, you'll wanna tune in. This week on Black History Year, we're asking, "What happens when a whole town decides the map no longer defines them--and then proves it?" On this special crossover episode with the film-fanatics at The Micheaux Mission, host Darren is cracking open the must-see Afro-Brazilian thriller "Bacurau" (2019). Part Western, part sci-fi, part anti-colonial manifesto (YES, that), they explore how collective audacity can turn survival into revolution--and why this genre-busting film might be a blueprint to getting real, trill freedom. Be sure to find Len Webb and Vincent Williams of The Micheaux Mission at https://www.micheauxmission.com/. New episodes of their podcast go LIVE every Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET. 031: From Segregation to Split Shift: Dr. Regina Vincent-Williams on Education, Resilience, and the Radical Truth

In the 1960s, as images of police dogs and fire hoses unleashed on Black Americans filled TV screens across the nation, a generation of children—Black and white—were learning, in real time, the searing reality of racism in America. It was a pivotal time, one that promised change with the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954, but failed to deliver on that promise for decades. Today, those struggles echo loudly in our current climate, as books are banned, history is whitewashed, and communities once again fight for a seat at the table. On this episode of Your Radical Truth, I had the honor of speaking with Dr. Regina Vincent-Williams, a transformational speaker, author of Split Shift: Busing and Desegregation, 1954–2024, and a living witness to the trauma and resilience of school integration in Alabama. “We Survived It”: A Firsthand Account of Integration Growing up in Alabama just miles from Birmingham, Dr. Regina experienced the fallout of a society grappling with change. In 1970—sixteen years after the Supreme Court ordered school desegregation—her high school, Talladega High, finally integrated. But what should have been a move toward equality came with devastating consequences. Students were separated by "split shifts"—a scheduling scheme that limited educational access and fractured lifelong friendships. Some students, many of whom had never even been in a fight, were permanently expelled with no hearing, no return date, and no diploma. “I wondered myself how I got into college,” she said. “I didn't have advanced math, foreign language, or hard sciences. Yet somehow, I made it. Others weren't so lucky.” This wasn't just Talladega—it was systemic across the South. Communities had over a decade to prepare for integration, yet when it finally came, the result was chaos, displacement, and erasure. Full post at: https://www.YourRadicalTruth.com/031-Dr-Regina

We're back--we hope you missed us! And we brought scissors, and we are not afraid to use them in spatchcocking a turkey for Thanksgiving. "Spatchcocking?" You may well ask. It's not just a word for removing the spine of the turkey to make for a wonderfully evenly roasted bird in half the time--say goodbye to over-cooked, dry breasts and under-cooked thighs (the turkey's, that is). But it's more than that as chef, teacher and cookbook author Kim O'Donnel explains in "Spatchocking: A Culinary Term for Our Times." Written in 2022 after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, but perhaps even more resonant today, O'Donnel reflects on her own freedom to make choices that have shaped who she is."The right to decide allowed me to become the woman I am . . . The choices that were mine to make allowed me to forge my own path. They've given me the wisdom to know this: Without safe, legal abortion, this country is spatchcocked."Kim O'Donnel, "Spatchcock: A Culinary Term for Our Times," Lulu Pork Chop, July 3, 2022But what about Rhinebeck?! While other podcasters might broadcast live from the New York State Sheep and Wool Festival, we prefer to wallow in the womb of time and reflect on our experience for a month. What did we conclude? It wasn't just fun, it was joyously inspiring. We met so many designers and knitters we admire--Aimée Gille, Vincent Williams, Patty Lyons, Sarah Schira, Jamie Lomax, Bristol Ivy, Gigi Queen of Orange, the Grocery Girls and Rosann Fleischauer. What about Andrea Mowry? Don't worry, her pattern "Framed" clearly caught the collective fancy this year and was everywhere in all colors and sizes. It was magical to see so many people wearing hand-knit their framed garb on the hill for the meet-up.

In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with singer-songwriter Cliff Cody. We talk about how he went from bouncer to songwriter to give it a shot in Nashville.  With nothing lucrative insight and family life calling, Cliff gave up music and moved to his wife's hometown in Ohio.   After many nights staring at his guitar sitting in the corner, Cliff picked up that 6 string again to give it one more shot, (with a little motivation from his wife), and the rest is now history! More on Cliff Cody Working as a bouncer at a West Texas honky-tonk, Cliff Cody's life changed forever when the waitress dared him to sing at Karaoke Night. Lucky for Cliff, a band was in the audience looking for a lead singer. They offered Cliff the job that night. The next day he bought a guitar, a week later he had written his first song and 6 months after that, he moved to Nashville.   After living in Nashville for 4 years with little success, Cliff went back to school and became an RN. While at a songwriter's retreat in Wyoming, he met his songwriting hero—D. Vincent Williams and he told Cliff something that would change his path. “Whatever “it” is, you've got it and I don't think you even realize it.” That was the encouragement he needed and in 2005 Cliff signed his first publishing contract with EMI/Sony Music. “Chasin Whiskey” was Cliff's first cut and recognized as a highlight of Julie Roberts' album “Men and Mascara” by Rolling Stone Magazine. Cliff's second cut was "Glad You're Gone", a song he co-wrote with the members of Halfway to Hazard David Tolliver and Chad Warrix.  He co-wrote "Gotta Go to Heaven" with artist Josh Thompson and co-wrote the first single on D. Vincent Williams' freshman album, "Down by the River."  Since first playing the Key West Songwriters Festival 12 years ago, Cliff has become a favorite and regular performer in the Keys. He has opened for Dwight Yoakam, Gary Allen, Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Phil Vasser, Aaron Lewis, Blackberry Smoke, David Allan Coe, Parmalee, Tracey Lawrence, Travis Tritt, The Charlie Daniels Band, Chris Young, Justin Moore, Ashley McBride and many more. Cliff made the Top 15 national finalists on the ABC talent Show "Rising Star" and wrote a song for the book, "The Shoe-Burnin' - Stories of Southern Soul" available on Amazon. His soulful voice and story telling style of writing has helped Cliff build a loyal following. He makes fast friends and forever fans and once you hear him, you become both. Cliff met his wife Amy at the legendary Bluebird Cafe and they married in 1998. They live in a log cabin with their 125 pound rescue dog--Bronx in the hills of Appalachian Ohio. They are enormously proud of their only child, Veronica who is an honor student at Ohio Wesleyan University—who doesn't call home nearly enough.  Where to find Cliff Website: https://www.cliffcody.com Where he's playing: https://www.cliffcody.com/calendar Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cliffcody

In Vincent's words, they hope to give 'Rolling Stone' style examination to these under appreciated works of art. Together they hope to find the perfect wine to drink with Pam Grier's Coffy, the five movies, since 1985, in which Samuel L. Jackson does not appear, and someone else who agrees with Len that The Last Dragon is a bad movie. The Micheaux Mission is named for Oscar Micheaux, regarded as the first major African-American feature filmmaker and the most successful African-American filmmaker of the first half of the twentieth century.  Len and Vincent have spent the last few years bringing the good word of Black film to the masses in a fun and engaging way. Along the way, they have been featured in The Philadelphia Tribune, Houston Chronicle, Radio New Zealand and won the Expression in Radio Award at the 2019 PhillyCam Cammy Awards. Today’s episode features the 2012 film, An Oversimplification of Her Beauty. According to the Micheaux Mission, Writer/director Terence Nance has created a literal poem of a movie, a heartfelt exploration of one man's feeling for his homie-lover-friend, that has enthralled Vince and Len unlike any film before on the Mission.
