Today, we are delighted to welcome British Olympic legend Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. An Olympic gold and silver medallist, European champion and 3x world champion, Jess competed at the highest level in the heptathlon for over a decade. Under the pressure and expectation that came with being the face of London 2012, Jess's gold medal at the Games will forever be one of the most iconic moments in British sporting history. For all the achievements on the track and in the public eye, there is so much more to her story. From starting a family while still competing, to founding her business, Jennis, developed off the back of her experiences as an athlete, Jess demonstrates how the role of the modern sportsperson is increasingly about far more than records, medals, and trophies. In today's show, we discuss: The focus of the athlete: From starting out in athletics camps to entering elite competition, how the origin story can shape the outcome. Coping with pressure: what does it take to retain absolute control over performance when the outside noise gets louder. An athlete's relationship with winning and managing the disappointments when the result doesn't go your way. From winning a first major medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games to the disappointment of missing the Beijing Olympics through injury. London 2012 - from face of the games to winning gold, how did Jess deal with the pressure of public expectation while balancing the commercial duties that surrounded the build up to the Olympics. Motherhood & athletics: Marriage, children, performance: how do you fit all these together while ensuring you don't let the ball drop? Is it possible or do sacrifices need to be made? It is not expected that female athletes have children while competing, so what happens when you have a baby and don't want to retire? What did Jess have to do to get back the elite level of performance she was so used to, and how did she have to adapt her regime to accommodate the changes she had gone through? The sports industry has a lot to learn when understanding the impact of pregnancy on the female body and challenges it presents when returning to elite competition. Why is this? Modern day role of the athlete: The value of the athlete has extended well beyond the field of play. How do professional sportspeople play an extended role in society today? How does Jennis seek to empower women at the elite end of sport and in the wider community? Why is it so important to build this education into the industry and beyond? The role of social media and exposure to brands is something that plays a significant part in the lives of the most successful athletes in today's world. Is this something they just have to learn to deal with or do they need additional support to manage effectively? Seeking investment in companies around women's health is a tough business, and educating the financial community on the opportunity to develop women's healthtech is crucial.
“The importance of the team around you, having focus and discipline and the awareness of facing setbacks… it's been great to bring the things I've learned from sport into the business world.” From the 2012 Olympic poster girl to Founder of FemTech brand, Jennis… today's 40 Minute Mentor Replay episode is with none other than Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. Jess speaks about how she's determined to help women unlock their performance goals and understand more about their bodies, and GP and menopause specialist Dr Louise Newson also joins to discuss the hormonal changes that can occur particularly in midlife. In this clip from this week's HealthTech Hour, Dame Jessica Ennis Hill explains to Steve Roest, CEO of PocDoc, that during her athletic career, even surrounded by the highest quality team, there was no discussion nor support around hormone related issues for female athletes. Partly due to the male dominated coaching teams, but many other factors played a role.

Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill is an Olympic gold medallist and three-time world champion heptathlete, and is one of the most successful women in British sporting history. She was the face of Team GB during the 2012 London Olympics, and her image adorned billboards and hoardings across the country in the run up to the Games. Born in Sheffield, Jessica discovered sport as a youngster after attending a local athletics camp during the school holidays. By the time she was 13 she was working with a coach and had joined the City of Sheffield Athletics Club. In 2006 she won bronze at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games but in 2008 she suffered an injury to her right foot which dashed her hopes of competing in the Beijing Olympics. She spent the next year working her way back to fitness and by the 2012 London Olympics she was at the peak of her powers. When she crossed the finish line on 4 August – known as Super Saturday when Team GB won three athletics gold medals in less than an hour – she took the gold medal with a British and Commonwealth record score which remained unbeaten for seven years. Just 15 months after the birth of her first child, Jessica won the heptathlon world title in Beijing – her third World Championship gold medal in a row. She won silver at the Rio Olympics in 2016. In October of that year, at the age of 30, she retired from competitive athletics. Presenter: Lauren Laverne Producer: Paula McGinley
Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill is an Olympic heptathlon gold medallist and a three-time world champion. This is a woman who knows what it takes to succeed at the very highest levels, and who has learned to process failure when she doesn't win. I learned so much from her insight. And she's still only 35! We had a truly fascinating conversation about the psychology of competitiveness, the importance of loyalty and roots, how injury taught her the value of rest and how losing the 2011 World Championship to a woman who later turned out to be a drugs cheat fuelled Ennis-Hill's desire to do better. We also talk about the specific challenges facing female athletes - from dealing with heavy periods to suppressing menstrual cycles altogether in order to compete - and how the fact that these issues weren't really talked about has now motivated Ennis-Hill to make fitness more accessible to women. Plus she talks about making the difficult decision to return to athletics after the birth of her first child, and why she wishes she'd trusted her own instincts. Oh, and obviously I ask her about the London 2012 Olympics. Enjoy! * Ennis-Hill's fitness app for women, Ennis, is available here. * My new novel, Magpie, is out on 2nd September. Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill is triple World champion, Olympic champion, European Champion and British record holder in the heptathlon and World indoor champion in pentathlon. Perhaps more significantly Jess is an icon of British sport and global track and field athletics – as much for carrying the weight of expectations of a nation at the London Olympics in 2012. To give you an example a 4000m2 portrait of Jess was painted beside the Heathrow airport runway emblazoned with the message, welcome to our turf, that was the message that greeted every athlete, coach, official, reporter and spectator to the London Olympics Now I had the privilege of working with Jess from her Junior days all the way to her retirement and still work with her now, but this conversation was a chance to look back on the entirety of her career and recap, reflect and in some cases help each other remember aspects of the journey. So it was great to take a chance to take stock with Jess but it was equally a dose of what also makes jess uniquely Jess, what makes her so adored, revered and connected to people is her overwhelming sense of values, ego-less sensibility, grounded kindness, and personability. In this episode I talk to long standing colleague, coach and friend Toni Minichiello, coach to one of the World's greatest athletes Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. I've worked with Toni since 2001 and while we've talked about everything and anything over the years, it was fascinating to capture his thoughts about the key area of communication, his thoughts, ideas, techniques and how they have evolved over the years; Show notes Communication and conveying knowledge and ideas for maximum impact Gleaning information from the athletes of different ages/abilities/experience Athletes critiquing themselves negatively Toni Minichiello's coaching style Communication assumptions! High performers and communication Finding a mutual vocabulary/language Motivational styles and mindsets Succinct information at critical points…deliver two points Motivation, confidence…pushing the positive The coach has to make the decision based on your knowledge and experience of the athlete…coach what you see Working/communicating with a coach…add value!
