We return like the bad pennies we are (hey, we prefer to think of ourselves as a high-class currency, but ...), and on this occasion we're joined by Mark Lewis. Mark Lewis is the man behind the burgeoning Youtube channel, Better Than Average - a channel which takes a different tack to the 'look at me, I'm perfect, buy my products' approach taken by the bulk of the Instafitness generation. Through his channel, the content he creates, and the challenges he takes on, Mark hopes to inspire us to believe and go for the reality that we can, actually, be better than we already are with a bit of grit, a bit of wit, and bit of a sense of humour and achievement along the way. Periodically, as part of his channel's varied and always entertaining output, he takes on a challenge to show the gap between what we think an elite athlete does - and what they ACTUALLY do. He first came to our attention when he, as a non-rower, who'd not been on a rowing a machine for the best part of 25 years, decided to see if he could row as fast as Sir Steve Redgrave did on his worst day on an erg - the infamous pre-Sydney 6 - 15 2k test collapse. (If you haven't watched this video, or indeed any of Mark's content, the links are down below. We won't spoil the ending for you, but it's well worth your time). As rowers, we knew we had to have a chat with this tall, fit interloper who thought he could into our sport, smash our records and this bugger off back to Youtube. We also wanted to have a chat with Mark because he has been very open on his channel in talking about his Testosterone Replacement Therapy medication. As individuals and a sport who has always taken a hard line against any form of drugs in sport, we really wanted to find out more about how this usage squared with his fitness goals, looking at the ethics, morality and advantages that it might give someone who is, essentially, a professional Youtuber whose success depends on his ability to work and inspire physical performance in others. Well, we're glad we got in touch with Mark as it turned out to be a fascinating and nuanced chat. Taking in his early life and background, his trajectory into sport, we also found out about his trajectory out of it, something exacerbated by lifestyle choices and social factors we can all identify with. Openly discussing his lowest points, and also his conscious decision to put the doughnuts away and starting fighting back, Mark showed a human side not usually associated with the filtered perfection of the professional social media fitness type. In this context, he talked about how even though he was eating better, and exercising regularly, and the weight had shifted somewhat, he still struggled with motivation and enthusiasm, going on to explain that going onto TRT was a lightbulb moment - one that gave him back the energy and the drive that he had been lacking even when he was doing all of the right things. This is an important discussion. The UK is well behind America and Europe in terms of Hormone Replacement Therapies in both sexes; and as Mark points out, a lot of issues that are diagnosed as depression have roots in hormone imbalances that can be addressed, but aren't by an NHS that is behind the curve. We discuss morality and ethicality of his TRT use, and its implications for age-group sports like rowing as its use becomes more and more widespread. After all, what could possibly go wrong with giving a therapeutic drug that also gives you more energy and drive and recovery to a cohort who really, really like to go a bit faster than they already are? A fascinating chat with a great guy, and an important discussion. TRT is coming, and as rowers and older sportsmen and women, we have to get our heads around it. Drew Ginn is a five-time world rowing champion, four-time Olympian, triple Olympic champion (and silver medallist in one of the greatest Men's Coxless Four Finals in history); member of Australia's original Oarsome Foursome, and recipient of the rowing's Thomas Keller Medal; as well as an inductee into Sport Australia's Hall of Fame. Beyond the medals, the statistics, the awards and the plaudits, Drew is, quite simply, a legend of the sport of rowing, described by triple Olympic champion Andrew Triggs-Hodge as Australia's equivalent of Sir Steve Redgrave. This episode of Broken Oars Podcast was a long time in the making (over a year). But we think you'll find, like us, that it was worth the wait. We sat down with an icon and ended up talking to one of the most passionate, knowledgeable, approachable and creative people we've ever met. Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent are as successful a sporting duo as you'll ever meet. Steve has won 5 gold medals at 5 successive games and is a 9 time world champion, Matt has won 4 Olympic golds and 10 world championships. They were successful before Britain became good at sport, winning before the UK Olympic system grew sophisticated. But not just the occasional win - sustained and dominant winning. I had the privilege of working with Steve and Matt from 1998, supporting them, along with Tim Foster and James Cracknell to the Sydney Olympics. I can't tell you how much influence they both had on me as a professional sports scientist and as a person. Their focus, standards, intensity, but also thinking, understanding and at times philosophy was so impressive you couldn't help but learn from it. You'll hear that though in this conversation, which was surprising, fun and at times emotional. Notes Tokyo delays how would they have responded? ‘Just what we wanted' & ‘Control the controllables' A hairline crack in the rig puts a race in jeopardy Are you feeling nervous yet? Changing the conversation The step up from Barcelona to Atlanta the pressure changed hugely Steve's infamous quote and the pressure of build up It wasn't a long retirement! The challenges that Steve felt in returning to rowing, both physically & mentally The way in which Matt & Steve supported each other, the deep level of understanding What are Matt & Steve's reflections on pursuing a goal pushing and driving but doing it well? Hello everybody! We're back for part 2 of our big old greatest British sportsperson debate! We had so much to say, we split it into two parts! Lucky you, it would've been an hour and a half otherwise, oh my.If you haven't heard part 1 of this little debate then please do check it out, that is where we start the conversation off by talking about Sir Lewis Hamilton, Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Andy Murray. We go a bit less mainstream for this episode and there's no messing around, we're straight into it, most sports get a shoutout for their most respected stars, even Snooker (but is Snooker a sport?), so much to discuss and hopefully we do everybody justice! We are still joined by special guest Henry Clark who joined us for part 1. He continues to be a delight and continues to be found at @HenryWAClark on Twitter. Henry continues to predominantly be a Cricket journalist with experience at Wisden Cricket, Sky Sports News and the Daily Mail. He also continues to be studying for a BA in Journalism Studies at the University of Sheffield. Henry continues to have been a long time supporter of Winging It so it continues to be brilliant to have him on.More of his work continues to be found on his website at henryclarksportsjournalist.wordpress.com. We rattle through a lot of sporting people in this the Winging It Assorted Sports special and we really hope you enjoy! Why not let us know if we've missed anyone out? 057: James Cracknell on Endeavour A note about Coronavrius We, individuals, groups, communities, society look up to sporting heroes, we revere and admire their dedication, their persistence, their focus, the sacrifices they make to make the most of their often rare genetics and to do so on the greatest performance stage. As the world battles Coronavirus, we're all going to be required to make sacrifices that we've never made before in pursuit of applying ourselves, to the collective goal of public health. We've thought hard about whether while the world is taking dramatic turn, whether the appropriateness of us publishing podcast episodes about a topic of human performance is even relevant. Certainly we can appreciate that if you normally tune in but your head is elsewhere at the moment then it might be better to switch off, go an focus on what you need to do (which hopefully isn't stock piling toilet rolls) and listen to this again when it suits you best. We've decided to continue because perhaps these episodes can offer some inspiration, maybe an hour's worth of distraction, perhaps to help refocus you on what you need to be doing. Also, there are a lot of people now distancing and isolating for the first time in their lives – I hope in some ways these episodes can be some supportive company and a positive influence as the worry and the noise surrounding the outbreak increases. This week's episode features my interview with James Cracknell. Two time Olympic Champion in coxless four rowing, part of perhaps the most renowned rowing crew of all time the Sydney 2000 four – a team I was honoured to support. On retirement, James didn't put his feet up, in fact almost the opposite. He crossed the Atlantic with Ben Fogle, raced to the South Pole, kayaked the length of the Thames, was at the time the fastest Briton to run the Marathon de Sables, competed in the Yukon Arctic Ultra and has run the London Marathon numerous times with a best time of 2:43 which for a 90kg guy is phenomenal (at the time of recording James was headed for the London Marathon in a few weeks, but the event has now been postponed for now to October). In 2010 James undertook Ride Across America and was hit by a petrol tanker suffering a contrecoup brain injury – he is now a campaigner for the use of bike helmets – which effectively saved his life. Last year James became the oldest competitor and the oldest winner, in the history of the Oxford – Cambridge boat being twice as old as his crew mates and competitors and older than some of his crew mates dad's. I worked with James in the pursuit of this goal and it was one of the most challenging cases I've worked on, to problem solve and innovate in such unique ways. James did so through some trying personal circumstances which played out in the press. In this conversation James and I discuss his early in drivers, becoming part of a crew with some of the highest achievers in sport Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent. Why he kept pushing towards goals after he retired from Olympic sport and his passions for public service and how through public policy he aspires to make the biggest difference to the people's health and well-being. I do believe there is a lesson in here about creating intensity about doing what we need to do to accomplish something. I also think there is a message about feeling the fears but rather than being paralysed by them – acting upon them. Happy listening, keep your distance and wash your hands folks! Show notes Steve and James discuss their long-standing relationship Honesty and being unafraid to be unpopular James's return to high level sport and The Boat Race James required a bespoke recovery programme that enabled him to come back stronger The triple whammy of ultra-endurance endeavours, starvation on The Island and being 45! Any reputation James had disappeared rapidly at the 5K ergo Earning respect by beating Steve and Matthew There are different ways to skin a cat! James's physiology Being the best at everything that takes no natural talent Defending titles and building on success. “Anyone can win once” Switching sides and doing the double The part vanity has to play in winning or losing Pressure Setting extraordinary goals The challenges full time athletes face! Motivating other people, being a burden, enjoying sport and rewarding yourself Relationships, perspectives and differences Swapping lycra for goretex or a gown at Cambridge and the binary nature of winning and losing Strictly what's the worst that could happen?! Do not show weakness. Do not show the opposition you are tired. Showing vulnerability Don't let them see you being sick Winning by a second or 4, break the world record…no?! Konkura is a site where people from all over the world can come and compete against each other in all different sports and hundreds of different challenges. www.konkura.com is a new and exciting way to make sport and exercise more fun, varied and engaging for everyone, whether the user is a keen athlete, health fanatic …or just wants to have a laugh with friends, there are challenges for everyone! If the user can’t find a challenge that suits them, they can create one of their own in moments, then invite friends to participate and compete with each other, and discuss training tips, exchange friendly banter and mutual encouragement. The challenge itself can be something of a serious nature such as a challenging gym workout or a running training schedule, something fun but fitness-related like The 10 Second Speed Punch Challenge or The Push Ups in One Minute Challenge or it can be off the wall, “record breakers”-style stuff like: how many t-shirts can be put on in one minute, the crème caramel eating challenge or the fastest texter challenge! Members of a sports club, can really benefit from challenges being set by the team captain or coach, and having to regularly post efforts for all the team members to see. This acts as an excellent way to get ready for the next big game or race, pushing the user and their teammates to perform better and have a laugh doing it! Challenges can be based on the team’s weekly training schedules, enabling coaches and captains to see who is training hard…and who isn’t! Of course, training hard is also as important as playing hard, so the user can spice things up and encourage club bonding by setting fun challenges to kick off socials with a bang, such as how many t-shirts you can put on in one minute or the crème caramel eating challenge, video the competitions. Brothers Phil and Ian Worthington from Preston, United Kingdom are the creators of Konkura and are delighted with how the site has taken off. Phil commented, “We’ve been marketing the site using social media and also spreading the word via friends and family. We’re getting plenty of sporty people visiting the site, and we would love to see more like-minded people getting involved by joining or making up their own challenges and inviting friends to get involved. You don’t have to be as competitive as Lance Armstrong or Sir Steve Redgrave to use the site – if you’ve got any competitive spirit at all, we think you’ll get a kick out of Konkura.” Ian added, “we’re aiming to build a worldwide community of people who enjoy the extra fun, motivation and friendly rivalry that comes with adding an element of friendly competition to your sport, fitness or weight-loss goals." Go visit Konkura I know you are going to love it.

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the Olympic gold medallist Matthew Pinsent. Matthew Pinsent won his fourth Olympic gold medal at this summer's games in Athens. His first three were all won rowing with Sir Steve Redgrave - as a pair in 1992 in Barcelona and 1996 in Atlanta and as part of the coxless four in 2000's Sydney games. This summer's success saw him lead the four to victory - in a photo-finish that saw them beat the Canadian team by less than a tenth of a second. He won his first Gold at the Junior World Championships aged just seventeen. Between 1991 and 2002 he won a gold medal every year at the World Championships and his life was given over to rowing - he took a year out from his studies to compete in the 1992 Olympics, fitted his wedding around the rowing calendar and followed a rigorous training regime to maintain his 6'5'', seventeen-stone frame at the peak of its strength and fitness.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Fields of gold by Sting Book: World Atlas, extended Luxury: Shaving kit
