It's a bumper Spotlight in a bumper week of big sports news. To cover it comprehensively, Ross & Gareth are joined by Sean Ingle of The Guardian to discuss the election of Kirsty Coventry to lead the International Olympic Committee. We explore her path to victory, enabled by Thomas Bach's support, and how she might lead the organization through looming challenges, including the integrity of the IOC's bid/host city selection process, and women's sport. On the subject of women's sport, Sean also chats to us about World Athletics' announcement that it will introduce pre-clearance screening for athletes wishing to be eligible for the women's category. It's a move that forms part of Sebastian Coe's declaration to 'doggedly' defend women's sport. We explore how sex screening works, and issues it may raise, and solve. We then shift to cycling to discuss a remarkable Milan-San Remo performance by Tadej Pogacar, showcasing superiority and versatility not seen in cycling for a very long time. It tees up the compound score, accounting for power output and performance in both absolute and relative terms. World Athletics has approved the introduction of cheek swabbing to determine if an athlete is biologically female. The global body's president Sebastian Coe says the decision is further evidence his organisation will protect the women's category in competition. The intention is to have the testing in place for September's world championships in Tokyo. Former Olympian and Otago University Emeritus Professor Dave Gerrard says the science behind the proposed tests is solid - and it's a reliable testing method. "It's used in common medical practice for genetic issues - and to determine the sex of individuals. So it's sound, and it is sound science."

Aujourd'hui, Kirsty Coventry a 41 ans.

Have you ever heard of high intensity interval training? That's quite a mouthful, isn't it? Luckily, we usually just call this type of workout HIIT. It's a training style that has recently gained a lot of popularity. In this Chatterbox episode, hosts Andrew and Anna explain the entire concept of HIIT and share their stories related to it. Chatterbox is a Culips series where two native English speakers have a quick and natural conversation about interesting topics. This series is designed to be beneficial for intermediate and advanced English language learners. Fun facts Although HIIT has been gaining in popularity recently, the concept has been around for a long time. Famously, British athletics coach Peter Coe used the principles of HIIT to help train his son, Sebastian Coe, who would later go on to win several Olympic medals as a middle distance runners! From Danny Boyle's opening ceremony, through Super Saturday and a record-breaking Paralympics, 2012 was a golden summer of national pride and sporting success. But to what end? A decade on from London 2012 – with nearly a third of UK adults and children classed as inactive – we explore whether the Olympics and Paralympics really delivered a sporting legacy for our country. We hear from sprinter Desiree Henry, rowing legend Dame Katherine Grainger, London 2012 chief Sebastian Coe, Sport England chair Chris Boardman and Paralympic icon Tanni Grey-Thompson as we assess why it takes more than magic moments and star athletes to get people into sport and exercise. E, appunto, insopportabile.(Riccardo Cascioli, La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana, 4 luglio 2022)
Our Great Coach on this episode is Frank Dick. Frank Dick is the current President of the European Athletics Coaches Association. From 1970 until 1979 he was Scottish National Athletics Coach. Then in 1979 he was appointed as the British Athletics Federation's Director of Coaching. In this position Frank led the British Athletics team into its "golden era" with Olympic gold medalists such as Daley Thompson, Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe. And ultimately victory in the European Cup in 1989. His contribution to sport and coaching was recognized with the awarding of an OBE in 1989 and an induction to the UK Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999. He has also coached athletes from other sports such as F1 driver Gerhard Berger, Ice Skater Katarina Witt, Tennis player Boris Becker and Golfer Justin Rose. Amongst the many other successes on his impressive resume are a Fulbright Scholarship in 1965, the publication of 4 books, stints as chair of the British Association of National Coaches, and British Institute of Sports Coaches , the appointment as High Performance Director for the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, and strategic planning consultant for the England Rugby Leadership Team under Eddie Jones. Frank is a master coach, and a fabulous story teller and some of the key parts of this interview for me were His view that the great coaches have curiosity and try to look at the world differently to learn new things. They are also challenging and do this through asking good questions. His thoughts on learning faster than the competition, and holding your self to the same expectations around learning that you have for your athletes. And that Teams are selected for their diversity, and from that you must create harmony and so your job as a coach is often as the conductor of the orchestra. This was a great conversation, I left feeling inspired and educated. And I hope you enjoy it as much as Jim and I did. Paul goes solo on this special supplemental episode to discuss college football S&C, what Torre Becton brings to Texas (spoiler: Paul doesn't know), and many of the fallacies and dichotomies that define the conversation around training for speed, power, strength, and agility. What can we learn from Ben Johnson, Sebastian Coe, and Barry Sanders with respect to the value of strength training? Is being strong ever a weakness? Why is improving force production the best way to improve power and why does rate of force training have inherent diminishing returns? If this topic intrigues you, give it a listen. Lunch Talk Live with Mike Tirico for Friday 5/15
Dies gab IAAF-Präsident Sebastian Coe in Doha bekannt.

Hardtalk speaks to Sebastian Coe – former British Olympic champion. He set 12 world records during his athletics career on the track and went on to hold many roles in various sporting organisations. Now he wants to become the president of the International Association of Athletics Federations, the IAAF. What more can be done to help clean up sport?(Photo: Lord Sebastian Coe addresses the media as he unveils his IAAF presidential campaign manifesto. Credit: Andrew Redington/Getty Images)
Kirsty Young's castaway is Sebastian Coe.It is more than a quarter of a century since his rivalry with fellow middle-distance runner Steve Ovett enraptured the nation. After retiring from the racetrack, he enjoyed a career in politics. Now, though, his focus is on the Olympics once again - not on individual medals this time, but ensuring the 2012 games in London are a success.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Record: The Closest Thing to Crazy, Katie Melua Book: Such Sweet Thunder: Benny Green on Jazz Luxury: A piano and guide to playing it.
