Molly talks with Veronica Roth about her book, "When Among Crows". About "When Among Crows" Step into a city where monsters feast on human emotions, knights split their souls to make their weapons, and witches always take more than they give. Pain is Dymitr's calling. To slay the monsters he's been raised to kill, he had to split his soul in half to make a sword from his own spine. Every time he draws it, he gets blood on his hands. Pain is Ala's inheritance. When her mother died, a family curse to witness horrors committed by the Holy Order was passed onto her. The curse will claim her life, as it did her mother's, unless she can find a cure. One fateful night in Chicago, Dymitr comes to Ala with a bargain: her help in finding the legendary witch Baba Jaga in exchange for an enchanted flower that just might cure her. Desperate, and unaware of what Dymitr really is, Ala agrees. But they only have one day before the flower dies . . . and Ala's hopes of breaking the curse along with it. VERONICA ROTH is the New York Times best-selling author of Arch Conspirator, Poster Girl, Chosen Ones, the short story collection The End and Other Beginnings, the Divergent series, and the Carve the Mark duology. Sacramento study recommends ways to improve the city's entertainment economy. Also, Sacramento Jewish leaders discuss how they are observing Hanukkah amid ongoing war. Finally, the author of “Poster Girl” and the story of WWII women welders. Improving Sacramento's Entertainment Economy Last year, Sacramento created a new position to build the city's nighttime economy so that entertainment venues, restaurants, bars and other businesses can thrive after hours. Tina Lee-Vogt became the city's first Nighttime Economy Manager in October 2022. In the year-plus since leading the new Office of Nighttime Economy, Tina has been canvassing downtown and midtown Sacramento listening to what's needed, the city's strengths, and the challenges to creating a vibrant entertainment economy. Tina returns to Insight with what she learned from a Sociable City Assessment and Music Economy Census conducted this year, as well as the changes that could happen in 2024. How Sacramento is Observing Hanukkah Today marks two months since the attack on Israel by Hamas. Today is also the start of Hanukkah. Rabbi Mona Alfi, from Sacramento's Congregation B'nai Israel and Rabbi Yossi Grossbaum, from the Chabad Jewish Community Center, join Insight to discuss how their congregations are celebrating the holiday while their hearts and minds are on the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. We will also understand what conversations are taking place within their communities during a rise in antisemitism. “Poster Girl” and the Story of WWII Women Welders During World War II millions of women took up jobs on production lines and in the defense industry to fulfill wartime orders for aircraft, munitions, and ships. These “Rosie the Riveters” and “Wendy the Welders” broke down barriers, and became symbols of inspiration and empowerment. On the 82nd anniversary of Pearl Harbor, we speak with historical novelist Shelley Blanton-Stroud about her newly-released book “Poster Girl,” which captures the experiences - and hardships - faced by these female patriots.

This week's guest is movie poster illustrator and designer Akiko Stehrenberger. Akiko was born in South Lake Tahoe, California in 1978. A first generation American, she is the second youngest of four children with one sister and two brothers. Akiko's father, designer Mark Stehrenberger is Swiss German and her mother Aichu Yeh from Taiwan—which, until she was eight years old was under Japanese rule— and they met when they emigrated to Los Angeles in the 60's. Akiko's mother spoke both Japanese and Mandarin but fostered more of a Japanese culture. Although she was not a professional artist, she encouraged Akiko to take up drawing and apply for art school; that being the preferred option to her enlisting for the army, which came close to being a reality. And so, in 1997 Akiko began studying illustration and design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. She also worked a variety of jobs to get through college and after she graduated in order to pursue her career and pay off student loans. New York beckoned and she moved from Southern California to learn the trade of becoming a designer and illustrator. When her mother became ill, Akiko moved back to LA. It was also coincidentally at the time when magazines were moving online that she fell into the movie poster industry, which changed the course of her life. In 2004, she officially began her career as a movie poster artist. It would be the film Funny Games, for which her poster was chosen, that put creative directors and the film industry on notice that here was an artist making her mark. Akiko is now a 23-time CLIO Award winner who was deemed the “Poster Girl” by Interview Magazine. Vanity Fair included her Funny Games and Kiss of the Damned posters in their “Best Movie Posters of All Time” list. Her "Da 5 Bloods" is on view at the Academy Motion Pictures Museum. Akiko's portfolio includes Portrait of a Lady on Fire, TÁR, Dune, Beef and Everything, Everywhere All at Once, to name just a few. Akiko combines traditional illustration techniques and modern graphic design to create textural elements with fearless experimentation showcasing her crafty intuition and versatility by capturing the essence of a film in a single image. New Life director John Rosman said: “Akiko is simply one of the best poster artists of all time.” Her first book, Akikomatic: The Work of Akiko Stehrenberger, published in 2020 will be updated with more recent posters later this year for its second edition. If you consider yourself a high achieving woman you need to give this episode a listen.3 things you'll learn, - How to identify if and when to leave your current job. - Signs of burnout - How to rest and reset if you are burnout. Sara McElroy is a former hustle culture devotee, ex-chief marketing officer, the Wall Street Journal's poster girl for pandemic career burnout, and a two-time member of the Great Resignation: class of 2021 and 2022. Following a stress-induced shingles diagnosis in early 2021, Sara decided to hit the reset button on her life; she quit her hard-won CMO job and trekked to Peru's Sacred Valley to reset her frayed nervous system. When she returned, she relocated from the buzzy metropolis of Atlanta to the beach in South Florida for a new job and a fresh start. But she once again encountered deeply ingrained cultural issues in her new role, and ultimately, she walked away again. Finding herself in the company of millions of other women who also set unfulfilling jobs ablaze during the Great Resignation, she returned to her journalism roots and began to explore the stories, breaking points, and defining moments that led women to seek greater opportunity mid-pandemic.These conversations became the genesis of Raze to Rise – an organization created to amplify women's voices from the Great Resignation and inspire others to blaze new trails in their own careers.Connect with Sarawww.sarajmcelroy.comwww.razetorise.comwww.linkedin.com/in/sarajmcelroyConnect with OliviaEmail - olivia@oliviatmcook.comLink's and freebies- https://linktr.ee/OliviatmcookAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

This week, Patrick and Tracy welcome Veronica Roth, author of POSTER GIRL. About POSTER GIRL: WHAT'S RIGHT IS RIGHT. Sonya Kantor knows this slogan—she lived by it for most of her life. For decades, everyone in the Seattle-Portland megalopolis lived under it, as well as constant surveillance in the form of the Insight, an ocular […] The post Episode 559-With Veronica Roth appeared first on The Functional Nerds.
Veronica Roth joins the program to talk about her amazing new book, Poster Girl! We had a real emotional moment last night on Dancing With The Stars... One of the celebrities withdrew from the competition. Who was it?
On this episode of Complicated Conversations we chat with Veronica Roth, the New York Times best-selling author of the #1 bestselling Divergent series, the Carve the Mark duology, Chosen Ones, and the short story collection The End and Other Beginnings. We discuss her latest novel, POSTER GIRL, a dystopian mystery with so many relatable themes. We chat with Veronica about her protagonist, Sonya, and why she veered from writing about the hero to someone who is guilty instead; how her books are always about the theme of freedom vs. duty, which is the essential struggle of every woman because we are taught not to not listen to ourselves or our wants in any profound way; what nickname she calls herself when she needs to be reminded to be her strongest self; Veronica's obsession with voluntary mass surveillance and how the reward system in her novel has eerie parallels to social media; why she keeps writing even when every professional goal she initially set has been hit; how she knows what ideas to follow; and how her astrological chart confirms that she is in fact the very best writer!
Casey Dellacqua has always had her eyes on the prize. She wanted to be a world-class tennis player and represent her country in the Olympics one day. What she didn't want, was to be a poster girl for queer athletes around the world. She wanted it to be, justifiably, about her tennis. But then, the media noticed she was playing less even though she was ranked very high. They started to ask questions. The reason? She was at home with her partner, Amanda, who was pregnant with their first son. Casey was too excited to keep that information to herself, so she came out publicly for the first time with the whole tennis world watching. Most of the press was extremely positive. Support poured in from around the world. But Margaret Court decided to write a letter in the newspaper lamenting a "fatherless generation" in response. And although Casey never intended to be a spokesperson for the LGBTQIA+ community, she stood up for herself and her family and has since become a powerful advocate for queer athletes and parents around the world. Meet two incredible, mega-bestselling author guests on this show—Veronica Roth and Gabrielle Zevin. Veronica is the New York Times bestselling author of the phenomenally popular series of books and movies, Divergent, who has also penned The End and Other Beginnings, Chosen Ones, and the Carve the Mark duology. She joins us to discuss her brand-new dystopian mystery novel POSTER GIRL, pushing her boundaries as a writer, and exploring big themes through science fiction. Gabrielle Zevin is the internationally bestselling and critically acclaimed author of several novels, including Margarettown, Young Jane Young, and book-cub favorite The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry which spent several months on the New York Times Best Seller List and was just released as a major motion picture. She joins us to discuss her super buzzworthy tenth novel, TOMORROW AND TOMORROW AND TOMORROW, which was published earlier this year and was a NYT bestseller and named a Book of the Month finalist for Book of the Year. We hear from Gabrielle about the role of gaming in her life and in this novel, seeing her work come alive on the big screen, and the friendship/love story at the heart of her new book.
Behind the scenes at PFW, we're gushing about RHOBH, The White Lotus, Two Nights In Lisbon, Physical with Rose Byrne, Part of Your World, and Poster Girl. NO SPOILERS.
This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute. Nina Jankowicz has been plucked from obscurity to be the famous person she yearned in song to become. In her new role as arbiter of what is unacceptable “mis- and disinformation,” she has become the poster girl of the now-intensifying Marxist Revolution in America. Tucker Carlson observed last night that Ms. Jankowicz's past antics – notably, her sometimes salacious and deeply partisan renderings of popular music, her screeds inveighing against ideological opponents and, yes, her own actual and absurd disinformation – obscure, like Joe Biden's affable senility, serious “Stalinist” tendencies. What can possibly go wrong with having such a person given free rein in a law enforcement capacity to go after political opponents – even school board-criticizing moms now officially called potential “domestic terrorists” – simply because she deems their exercise of First Amendment rights to be impermissible? The short answer is “plenty.” This is Frank Gaffney.
Carole is in conversation with Lynne Bowman from Northern California. Lynne is a very creative woman and has many many stories. She was homeless for a while when she had to take her children and flee across the country away from a domestic violence situation. Lynne has worked in advertising in difference industries; silicon valley, hair cosmetics and the Californian wine business she has been an actress and a weather woman. There is nothing this woman couldn't do, she has written a few books and her latest book is a great cook book for diabetics and people who love them " brownies for breakfast." She is passionate about life, food, her children and community and activism in community.
Zara Larsson, Nina Nesbitt, Brian Higgins, Darin and Jörgen Elofsson discuss how important avoiding competition is, how getting dropped from a label affects your self-esteem and the creative process, and how difficult being both a fan of music and a musician can be. Darin is a Kurdish-Swedish vocalist. He started writing songs at 14 and signed his first record deal at 17. He's co-written with pop icon Robyn, released 8 albums, set up his own record company, and is now the most played artist on Swedish radio. Swedish star Zara Larsson is one of the world's biggest pop singers, topping charts in multiple countries. Her third album, Poster Girl, was released back in March. Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt is known for her bubblegum Pop songs and viral TikTok videos. She's worked with Ed Sheeran, written for Jessie Ware, and calls Taylor Swift a fan. Brian Higgins has written major hits for artists like Kylie, Pet Shop Boys, Bananarama and Girls Aloud. He co-wrote Cher's Grammy-winning hit Believe in 1998, which sold more than 11 million copies worldwide, and won him three Ivor Novello Awards. And Grammy-nominated songwriter Jörgen Elofsson hass written for Celine Dion and Britney Spears, was behind Kelly Clarkson's pop anthem Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) and Will Young's Evergreen, which became the UK's fastest selling debut single in its first week.

An IKEA study found that 1/3 of women say their careers have been held back because they do more in the home than men. Which is why IKEA worked with a relationship expert to launch a game on Instagram Stories that can help start a global conversation about equality at home. This game helps couples (or flatmates) talk about and address any imbalance in the home. We must educate each other, and we must educate women all over the world! Team UNPLUGGED.

Hockeyroo golden girl Anna Flanagan was at her lowest ebb and living in her car when police arrested her in the Sydney suburb of Northmead last September, charging the Olympian with high range prescribed concentration of alcohol and resisting arrest. Disgraced doctor Geoffrey Edelsten, who made a name for himself with his flashy lifestyle and string of young wives, has died aged 78 at his apartment in Melbourne. A major gender war has erupted over health funds' extremely high-cost pregnancy policies. And Sydneysiders are staying in their local night-life hubs rather than venturing into the city as late night hospitality giants struggle to entice revellers to the city. Ilaria is the poster girl for 'savage swiping' - that means she's doing dating apps, and doing them well. She's looking for a relationship, but she knows that 'numbers' are the way to get there. She's no stranger to the Bumble message, "There are no more bees in your hive," and has some serious dating KPIs. She's had a series of long term relationships and one pseudo soul mate, but last year during Covid she thought it might be time to start looking in earnest. We talk through her dating apps strategy, her experience on exclusive invite and celebrity only dating app Raya, and what her top tips are for dating app newbies.

Zara Larsson lançou uma “edição de verão” do seu mais novo ábum, “Poster Girl”. E, para quem já é fã, nós reunimos várias referências nas letras sobre relacionamentos, drogas, amores tóxicos e muito mais. On our third episode, we paired Swedish Pop singer and songwriter Zara Larsson with Dr. Carrie N. Baker, an American lawyer and Professor at Smith College, to discuss the vastly (over)complicated world of contraception. What were some of the earlier forms of contraception? Why is there not a widely-used contraceptive pill for men? Will Zara Larsson grow to enjoy TikTok? Let's find out. "V Wanna Know" was created and is hosted by Mathias Rosenzweig. The show is produced and edited by Ryan Killian Krause. This is a V Magazine podcast, powered by Yoox. (Zara Larsson's latest album Poster Girl is available now)
