Nothing stifles a comms team like constant day-to-day firefighting. It's refreshing to get the team together, set some proper goals and go about achieving them with determination and focus. In one recent media training session delivered by my business, Comsteria Limited, we were discussing pitching stories to the media when one participant commented that 'you win some you lose some'. This of course is true. But we don't need to sit back and accept our fate. We can be proactive - take on specific battles and make absolutely sure we win them. It's the same when people talk about this desire for 'engagement' or 'awareness'. Specifically, what sort of engagement? From whom? We unpick all this in our training sessions, pulling in tactics from the wider business world as well as sport and popular culture. Jessica Ennis knew she was going to win London 2012 Olympic gold. Music producer Brian Higgins knew 'The Promise' would be a massive hit for Girls Aloud and become a defining sound for a generation.  Have a listen to this podcast for more on the power of intent, the importance of clear, specific goals and how bringing in an outsider could be the breath of fresh air your business or comms team needs.

Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill is an Olympic gold medallist and three-time world champion heptathlete, and is one of the most successful women in British sporting history. She was the face of Team GB during the 2012 London Olympics, and her image adorned billboards and hoardings across the country in the run up to the Games. Born in Sheffield, Jessica discovered sport as a youngster after attending a local athletics camp during the school holidays. By the time she was 13 she was working with a coach and had joined the City of Sheffield Athletics Club. In 2006 she won bronze at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games but in 2008 she suffered an injury to her right foot which dashed her hopes of competing in the Beijing Olympics. She spent the next year working her way back to fitness and by the 2012 London Olympics she was at the peak of her powers. When she crossed the finish line on 4 August – known as Super Saturday when Team GB won three athletics gold medals in less than an hour – she took the gold medal with a British and Commonwealth record score which remained unbeaten for seven years. Just 15 months after the birth of her first child, Jessica won the heptathlon world title in Beijing – her third World Championship gold medal in a row. She won silver at the Rio Olympics in 2016. In October of that year, at the age of 30, she retired from competitive athletics. Presenter: Lauren Laverne Producer: Paula McGinley

Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill is an Olympic heptathlon gold medallist and a three-time world champion. This is a woman who knows what it takes to succeed at the very highest levels, and who has learned to process failure when she doesn't win. I learned so much from her insight. And she's still only 35! We had a truly fascinating conversation about the psychology of competitiveness, the importance of loyalty and roots, how injury taught her the value of rest and how losing the 2011 World Championship to a woman who later turned out to be a drugs cheat fuelled Ennis-Hill's desire to do better. We also talk about the specific challenges facing female athletes - from dealing with heavy periods to suppressing menstrual cycles altogether in order to compete - and how the fact that these issues weren't really talked about has now motivated Ennis-Hill to make fitness more accessible to women. Plus she talks about making the difficult decision to return to athletics after the birth of her first child, and why she wishes she'd trusted her own instincts. Oh, and obviously I ask her about the London 2012 Olympics. Enjoy! * Ennis-Hill's fitness app for women, Ennis, is available here. * My new novel, Magpie, is out on 2nd September. Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill is triple World champion, Olympic champion, European Champion and British record holder in the heptathlon and World indoor champion in pentathlon. Perhaps more significantly Jess is an icon of British sport and global track and field athletics – as much for carrying the weight of expectations of a nation at the London Olympics in 2012. To give you an example a 4000m2 portrait of Jess was painted beside the Heathrow airport runway emblazoned with the message, welcome to our turf, that was the message that greeted every athlete, coach, official, reporter and spectator to the London Olympics Now I had the privilege of working with Jess from her Junior days all the way to her retirement and still work with her now, but this conversation was a chance to look back on the entirety of her career and recap, reflect and in some cases help each other remember aspects of the journey. So it was great to take a chance to take stock with Jess but it was equally a dose of what also makes jess uniquely Jess, what makes her so adored, revered and connected to people is her overwhelming sense of values, ego-less sensibility, grounded kindness, and personability.   Show notes Life after retirement First GB selection at 15 and school sports day. School athletics and experimenting with events within the sport Changes in physiology after pregnancy A defining career moment and important lesson in approaching training… have no weaknesses The balance of endurance over power, the way in which Toni focussed the training towards Jess's strengths The mental challenges within the heptathlon event. Mila, Jess's dog, Jess talks about the impact of Mila and the distractions she brought 2007 Osaka, First World Championships, placed 4th. Excited and motivated to do her best A bank of confidence derived from hard training particularly in the 800m 2008, Götzis, a turning point in Jess's career. Toni and Jess changed too much, and injury struck! Injury and the devastation of pulling out of competition and the ramifications of not being able to compete in the Olympics Team Jennis pulling together to get Jess back on track. Unloaded training in order to cope with injury and maintain fitness A change in training, sensible training and sensible recovery introducing new elements in order to allow the body to offload 2009 planning after injury, planning the comeback! The face of the Olympics- how did that happen…? The World Championships, Daegu, and a 2nd place. Happiness tinged with sadness, what do I need to do to win?! The song I have sent you this week is one that failed to make the classical music charts which it should have done. It came about after Radio City’s Norman Thomas told his listeners how he went out to buy a dibber…which is a garden tool used for manually boring holes in the ground to plant seeds in….so Norm buys what he thinks is a dibber only to get home and find he’s bought a handle off a shovel….he took a lot of stick over this so I came up with The Dibber Song and sent it to him….he played it every day for about a fortnight. On one occasion he was interviewing Cilla about her forthcoming panto and played this song to her and got her to join in on the chorus….but sadly never put it on any of her albums…….I wonder why. We have a new golden girl….the wonderful Jessica Ennis is world champion again….she is a great role model for sport which,as we discussed recently,is about WINNING. Let’s hope a good proportion of our youth switch off their computers and iPhones and get out there…..then perhaps they’ll stop moaning about being bullied on line….and hats off to Usain Bolt who did it again …just as well because if the other guy had won we would never have heard the end of it….all good stuff….better not mention the final test match. 3.The BBC are “sacking” the Met office who have been supplying them with weather predictions for years….it’s about time too…the forecasts can be very iffy….I use the weather channel on the phone and it is very accurate…so why don’t the Beeb use this instead…….the local forecast has been atrocious and Diane Oxberry comes on next day and makes a joke of it….”oooh we got it wrong yesterday hee hee” which is all very well but a lot of people depend on the forecast and base their day on it…..so with a bit of luck we might start getting decent forecasts from the Beeb for a change. 4.There has been huge news coverage of the plane crash at the display in West Sussex….again a terrible tragedy…these things seem to be happening a bit too much lately. The fact that passers by lose their lives makes it worse. How unlucky can you be to be hit by a plane whilst travelling on the main road…..I think this needs to be thought about a lot more…..the Red Arrows give a display every year in a local place called Hoylake…but they do it over the sea for this reason…maybe this practice should be adopted by everyone….the “experts” have been saying that there has been no public fatalities since 1952…which they seem to think makes it all O.K…..ONE loss of life is one too many…nothing is worth that…..anyway it looks like things will change. 5.I’ve lost a lot of sleep lately since hearing the news that One Direction are splitting up….Oh My!!...there has been a lot of tears…mainly from their management and record company…oh yes and from the teeny boppers. I’ve never felt this bad since The Dooleys split up !!!....Harry Stiles?...that’s the only name I know…and they have sold 50 million records….it’s a sad time for us all…I’m sure the immigrants who are running for their lives will be very upset about it. They all sound the same to me…but then again I am 60 years outside the age range. I don’t know why they call these guys BANDS…they are a vocal group…a BAND plays instruments…like McFly….who are good….and have a bit of talent.

Integrating athlete care – ‘one stop shop' to optimize athlete care - sports medicine with a focus on PERFORMANCE. Dr Paul Dijkstra has vast experience in elite track and field athlete care. He shares his experience from UK Athletics – the team won 4 gold medals at the London Olympic Games. What's new in this approach? This model of athlete care emphasises the partnership among not only the health professionals, but also with the strength and conditioning team and the coach(es). Also emphasised is performance – too often clinicians tend to focus exclusively on health whereas the athlete's focus is performance. Dr Dijkstra provides case scenarios -- how the management model works in real life. He shares the public domain case of UK heptathlete Jessica Ennis who forewent the Beijing Olympic Games (2008) because of a navicular stress fracture, but chose full healing and a longer future over ‘patch up' to get to the 2008 Olympic Games. The paper outlining this approach was featured in the April issue of BJSM supported by the IOC (Injury Prevention, Health Protection). Leapy Lee Mr Little Arrows

Make no mistake-Team GB has enjoyed a wonderful Olympic success. Leapy is the first to acknowledge this. However, Leapy has been misunderstood. As a fan of Athletics he was concerned that Britain had little chance of medals in a lot of the events. In the euphoria after the success of Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis and Greg Rutherford in the Long Jump there has been a number of events which have not seen success. Leapy hastens to add he didn't mean to generalise and he applauds the wonderful successes that have been achieved in so many disciplines.. There are areas where the Olympic Committees will be looking at their strategies but overall these wonderful athletes and competitors have put the GREAT back in GB. There is a valid point that money must be invested to back the efforts of all competitors. The success in Equestrianism, Rowing, Sailing, and Cycling comes at a price. There must be an investment strategy and this has been the case with GB. How can the same success be transferred to the Blue Ribbon event?
