Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the Performance Psychcast. Today we are very fortunate to be speaking with Colin Wilson.  Colin Wilson started his performance and coaching journey in sport from age nine, winning national and international age-group medals in Table Tennis from the age of 13, and two Commonwealth silvers, aged just 16. Colin was always curious from a young age, and fascinated by questions like, “Where does High Performance Really Come From?”. As a result of having two amazing sport-specific and philosophical mentors, Colin became a coach educator age 19. He coached England Women, Men, Girls and Boys and later his son Sam became England Under 21s No. 1. After gaining an Economics and Statistics Honours degree at UCL, he was asked to help coaches and coaching programmes in other sports too and worked on sport-wide development programmes in partnership with BASES, UK Sport, sportscoachUK (now UK Coaching) and the British Olympic Association. Working to develop Olympic level coaches was another wonderful opportunity and a further vertical learning curve. With further fantastic mentors and training in traumatology and psychodynamics he bridged the journey to becoming an executive coach and organisational leadership developer, and was invited to support Nokia, BT Global, HSBC, Barclays, Delphi, Unilever, a major political party, and more. He now specialises in developing senior leadership capability and supporting multi-stakeholder, multi-agency situations with significant human dynamics. Ultimately, he relishes helping people and teams to find themselves, their best direction/strategy and their optimal, adaptable development path over time to fulfil their desired aims. Welcome to the Humans of Nutrition Podcast brought to you by Registered Nutritionists Anna Wheeler and Prof Danielle McCarthy. Look at Matt Lawson's CV and you'll probably see under ‘Work History' PFA Dietitian, The Football Association; Development Football Head, University of Nottingham; Team GB Dietitian, British Olympic Association. Under ‘Skills & Experience', you'll find UEFA Licenced Coach. Get a chance to look in his little black book, and you may see names like Sven Goran Eriksson, Ellen White and Carly Telford, Sophie Bradley and Alex Greenwood (major shout out to England's women's football team, past and present!). Talking of which during this episode, Nutrition Talent's Anna reveals a secret football ambition from her 10-year-old self, and how she was an inadvertent women's rights campaigner at this tender age – go Anna! Matt still considers himself a dietitian, first and foremost. Just how did Matt become a top sports dietitian? He jokes that it was primarily because he “failed in (his) bid to be a footballer”! But this early love of sport triggered an interest in how the body works, how what you eat and drink impacts performance, leading him to the world of dietetics. Matt talks about the common one-way system from dietetics towards clinical work, but he never let go of his true interest in sports and nutrition, choosing to go on to complete an MSc Nutrition with a dissertation in sports, then going on to study at Loughborough University to attain Sports accreditation. We hear about his early days, the challenges of improving the diet (and by extension performance) of his first football club – faced with a team eating burgers and chips when he first met them, he certainly had his work cut out! We are reminded that athletes are as human as we are – advice needs to be evidence based and individualised (seems so obvious now, but who considered that the dietary and performance needs of the striker would be different than the defence?!!). And some of these athletes live with diabetes, coeliac disease, IBS, disordered eating behaviours etc. – “they're just normal people at the end of the day”. There's a multitude of other topics covered – supplements (banned or otherwise), recreational players and the opportunities to have a positive impact on nutrition and exercise at a grassroots level. Matt welcomes the evolution and developments in sports science, which of course informs his practice, and ends with a wish – to see both England teams win the championships…to be continued! Team development strategies from the world of sports psychology As one of the first psychologists to work with elite sports teams in the UK, George Karseras knows a thing or two about winning ways. His many years of experience in occupational psychology have led to the creation of a science-backed code for better organisational teaming. George offers a new perspective on team building that puts mental trust and shared purpose before emotional safety and prioritises probing questions over psychometric testing. He talks of using deals and contracts, skin in the game and lists of demands to get on the same page and even has a (gentle) crack at Patrick Lencioni! Cracking the code on performance means stepping out of your comfort zone - are you ready?! P.S. His book, Build Better Teams, is my favourite on team building - EVER! Why you should listen: task-first team development Leadership principles for building trust - HINT: it's not about ‘getting to know you' We explore leadership strategies for hybrid teams  Important agreements for team development - we must do this first! This episode is born from KORE Software's 2019 free whitepaper, Storytelling in Sponsorship: The importance of storytelling in selling, reporting, and activating partnerships in sports and entertainment. Storytelling drives our lives. A myriad of new OTT broadcasters, the rise in popularity of Instagram and Facebook Stories, TikTok and YouTube's increasingly influential stars, and a multitude of news sources where the dilemma of credibility and authority are changing the ways information is shared, all impacting our everyday. Stories are at the heart of this new world of information sharing. For what is the foreseeable future, they will continue to shape relationships, understanding, and behaviors. In this episode, we want to shine a light on how both brands and rights holders can utilize storytelling to their advantage, across the whole lifecycle of their partnerships. In a world of instantaneous conversation and differentiation, expectations of audiences as well as clients have changed. In this episode, we look at the three most important aspects of the partner relationship; selling, activating, and reporting. To help us explain best practice in storytelling, we've pulled together insights from around the world of sponsorship, with help from some of the biggest and most influential national and international brands and rights holders, including HSBC, the Golden State Warriors, and the British Olympic Association. We explore how brands and rights holders can survive and thrive in this new, evolving world of storytelling. Today, it's vital to understand how both can find that mutual area of understanding and value creation; what are the key differentiators of the relationship, where can value be added and importantly, how can storytelling help them to achieve this. Whilst branded content and sponsorship have always allowed brands to become a more intrinsic part of fan and audience engagement, as audiences become tech-savvy ad blockers, and the advertising and media landscape continues to shift, sponsorship will become an even more important vehicle in the years to come. You can download a copy of the whitepaper here. We also welcome Leo Baudino, Product Marketing & Communications Manager at KORE Software who joins us to discuss her latest blog, 4 Essential Steps to Selecting the Right Partnerships. This is the last of my conversations with the 2021 cohort of the AI for Social Impact Program run by Microsoft for Startups and the Social Tech Trust. I've been looking forward to speaking to these guys for quite a few weeks, but we've held off until now to coincide with their official launch – which just happens to be taking place at 10 Downing Street shortly before the interview gets aired. That recognition from the Government is a hint at the importance of what they are doing. We are talking about a game-changing, science and data-driven approach to Safety in Sport, which is going to have a major impact on our long term enjoyment of all types of sports from childhood to old age and across the spectrum from schools to elite level clubs. So there's a very obvious positive impact on our physical and mental health and wellbeing, but the social and economic implications go far beyond that. It's a real privilege for me to be meeting these guys at this exciting early stage – it seems like I'm in the right place at the right time. They've already put a super-strong, highly experienced team together, including big names from the sporting world, and have very significant momentum. My guests are Andy Hunt and Damian Smith, respectively CEO and CTO of Podium Analytics, an NGO that seeks to significantly reduce the incidence and long-term impact of injury in sport. Their very straightforward objective is to help ensure that more people can participate in sport for a lifetime. So this is social impact on a potentially massive scale. The organisation was founded by Ron Dennis, founder and former CEO and Chairman of McLaren, who has been at ther forefront of safety in sport for many years. He is still very much involved as Chairman. Andy came on board as CEO 18 months ago, from his previous role as CEO of World Sailing. Prior to that, he has CEO of the British Olympic Association for 5 years, including leadership of TeamGB at the London 2012 Olympics. He's also a non-exec on the boards of both England hockey and Gloucester rugby. Damian joined Podium last year, having previously been head of Information Technology at the England & Wales Cricket Board for a number of years.

Nick goes on to share helpful information around the recovery pyramid which provides a structure for tailoring interventions and practical solutions. If rest and recovery is something you can improve on this is well worth a listen! Essential Learning Points From This Episode • Fatigue is multifactorial both physiological and psycho-social. • In team sports the individuals needs can sometimes be ignored, an ice bath doesn’t work for everyone. • Look after your sleep, take care of your nutrition and body management first then look at other things such as compression garments, hydrotherapy… • Be brilliant at the basics! • If you can find ways to relax you’re going to make better decisions when you train and compete. • Being professional around rest and recovery can help the longevity of an athlete’s career and help them maintain consistency of performance. • Coaching messages and the organisational culture, as well as where athletes seek out messages can impact their perceptions around rest and recovery. • Endurance athletes can be obsessed with putting in the miles where resting up or doing a short session may be a better answer sometimes. • Athletes and support staff can sometimes lose sight of what is important and what actually drives performance. • Look to monitor and measure with a training diary recording your day to day thoughts and feelings. • Ask yourself the question - how do my current recovery strategies make me feel?

Professor Rob Copeland is Director of The Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) in Sheffield and Professor of Physical Activity and Health at Sheffield Hallam University. Rob is a keen cyclist. He says “if it's going to be a good day, it'll start with a bike ride…” He arrived at the studio having just played host to Andy Anson, the new CEO of the British Olympic Association. That meeting focused on the work that Rob and colleagues across the city have been doing on the Olympic legacy, supporting the population to be more physically active. Rob graduated in Sport and Exercise Science from Newcastle University. He studied for a Masters at the University of Sheffield before working for two years as a Community Health and Fitness Officer in Mansfield, supporting people with chronic health conditions into physical activity. That laid the groundwork for an academic career that started at Sheffield Hallam University, where Rob took a PhD in ‘Psychology and Childhood Obesity.' Over the past 18 years Rob has worked on over 100 projects supporting people into a healthier lifestyle. The story of the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre conventionally starts with the 2012 Olympic Games, but before then Professor Steve Hake had a project called ‘Sports Pulse', which was about how academia and elite sport, particularly sports engineering, could support local companies to advance their technologies. With London 2012, Sheffield was awarded foundation partner status in the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine and received £10m of investment from the then Department of Health. Sheffield established a city-wide partnership with representation from every aspect of civic life, led by Sir Andrew Cash and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The money was used to collocate NHS clinics with leisure centres. Three leisure centres in Sheffield now host 80,000 clinical appointments per year. This in turn became part of a much bigger programme called ‘Move More', Sheffield's physical activity strategy. The ambition of that programme was to transform Sheffield into the most active city in the UK. Rob led that programme and Steve Hake became the Research Director. That programme morphed into the AWRC. At its heart is the vision of transforming lives through innovations that help people move. The AWRC is located in Darnall, a ward of 22,000 people, a neighbourhood of 90,000 people, where there is “huge health inequality”, so the centre has a contextual local vision, “it's not just a grand vision.” The £14m funding for the building came from an application to the Department of Health and Social Care. The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) provided just under £1m for the equipment. The research work of the AWRC is coordinated around three themes: Healthy and Active 100, which looks at how someone born in Darnall today could expect to live 100 years of healthy and active life; Living Well with Chronic Disease, which considers physical activity as a treatment for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke etc; Technological and Digital Innovations to promote independent lives, which talks to the NHS 10-year plan. The centre has a programme of engagement with the private sector, including new start-ups and SMEs. Deputy Director Dr Chris Lowe secured a grant of £850k from Research England to create a ‘Wellbeing Accelerator', which supports the private sector with academic expertise. To be remotely successful the AWRC will have to have tackle the 38% of the population who, according to the latest NHS report, average less than 15 minutes per day of vigorous activity. In relation to this, Rob is “wholly convinced by the power of people.” All communities have assets, talents, and drive, and the AWRC is concerned with creating the conditions within which they can thrive. But the social, economic, and environmental conditions are not the same across all communities. Therefore, this has to be a conversation about empowerment and not...

Was Eliud Kipchoge's sub-two marathon an extraordinary athletic achievement? Or was it a technology-doped gimmick? Could it be viewed as both? A little late to the party, perhaps, but full of opinion as ever - we took a look at his history-making run through the streets of Vienna.Within 24 hours of that, Brigid Kosgei was smashing Paula's time in Chicago, and so fell one of the greatest statistical outliers in the sport: the longest-standing marathon record of the post-War era. What a time to be a distance runner, eh? That is, unless you want to compete on a track on the World Athletics circuit... #DiamondWhat? We also cast our eyes over the end-of-season awards, and - with hindsight - did a pretty good job guessing the winners... Podcast 034 Show Notes – Performance People In this week's episode, Steve takes the reins on his own as he shares some perspectives about developing the next generation of performance people. Over the last few years Supporting Champions have been applying the lessons learnt in elite sport into other sports, business and education and one of the areas we keep observing/hearing about is the lack of skilled graduates. People and team development has therefore been a major area of work for us and has been for Steve throughout his time at the British Olympic Association and the English Institute of Sport. A significant shift toward this began post-Beijing, focusing not only developing the performance of athletes but that too of the team behind the team. This podcast will focus on these ideas, distilling advice for people in three key early career phases; during study, transitioning out of university and attempting to land a job and after just securing a role. Show Notes Steve starts by sharing the “Letter to the 15,000” blog he first published in 2015 which has been read over 300,000 times across the world. The blog highlights the ever-growing concentrated graduate pool and the gaps between the education system and the workplace. Here, Steve offers advice and practical tips to those who are currently studying and preparing for life after university. Steve starts to explore the transition out of university into the workplace and the hurdles people encounter when applying for jobs, managing online presence, differentiating self from others and the importance of work and personal experience. So you have got the job? Now what? Steve talks about the chaotic start you will face whilst immersing yourself into your new role and environment. He emphasises the requirements of having to skill up quickly, find role clarity, broaden your network and all of this whilst still being incredibly effective under pressure. Steve highlights the startling facts behind the university-employment gap widening. and urges you to take action, ownership and responsibility of your career. Anti-doping authorities in Britain will carry out more than 7,000 drugs tests on athletes at the London Olympics and Paralympics later this year, more than at any previous games. They're also warning potential cheats that the 2012 Games will be the 'riskiest yet' with a greater chance of them getting caught. But, despite the rhetoric, the British Olympic Association also faces the overturning of its lifetime Olympic ban for any athlete banned for more than six months for a doping offence. The World Anti-Doping Agency says the BOA's stance is not compliant with its code. What message does this send in an Olympic year, and what can WADA do to combat what it sees as the growing role of organised crime in the trafficking of performance enhancing drugs? Tim Franks speaks to WADA's President, John Fahey.
