Hosted on Acast. “When I talk about being sober·ish, I am talking about me really paying attention to how I am paying attention to me. It's a choice, not a label.”   Today's episode is with my dear friend Dana Kaplan who shares how sober·ish not only applies to booze but to food, exercise and other things that we can use as a coping mechanism. The core memory of feeling so loved and vulnerable that she turned to booze for numb that beautiful feeling. The awe she still carries about never having to go to rehab. How for many years she thought she was undateable and would self-sabotage herself with booze to try and prove it. The importance of having these types of conversations with kiddos which is her life's work.  Sober·ish? Sober curious? I want to hear from you! Episode #88- The kids are not okay- with Dana Kaplan is currently ranked #3 in our most popular podcasts of all time. We even did a follow up The Kids are not okay 2- episode 103- where we talk about the paradigm shift that needs to happen with parents and teachers. Leila Salmons is weighing in on where kids are today from the perspective of a speech and language pathologist who helps kids find their voice. It wasn't just the communication and grades that were the problem, but the mindsets, the labels and limits that the teachers and parents put on these kids. Leila realized that kids, teens, and young adults needed accountability, and new beliefs but the parents needed support as well. Connect with: Leila! A transgender Vermont high school student who was the target of a transphobic hate campaign is breaking her silence.“I want to be able to go out there and kind of just say, ‘I am trans, I am here,'” said the 14-year-old first-year student at Randolph Union High School, who asked to be identified as Rabbit in this interview. The Vermont Conversation and VTDigger are protecting the student's privacy out of concern for her safety. In late September, Vermont television station WCAX aired a news story about the girl's volleyball team at Randolph Union High School. Rabbit had recently joined the team, and WCAX featured a single student who objected to Rabbit's presence in the girl's locker room. The story was immediately picked up by right-wing media outlets including Fox News, the New York Post, the British tabloid the Daily Mail and the conservative Heritage Foundation. This unleashed a “wildfire of bigotry and hatred,” according to Rabbit's mother, and a torrent of transphobic hate messages to Rabbit, her family and the school. The school district website was hacked and forced offline after the site was flooded with transphobic messages. Rabbit temporarily left school in fear for her safety. In fact, Rabbit was being bullied by a small group of students, her mother said. WCAX soon removed the story from its website. But the damage had been done. “I was in danger,” Rabbit said. “And not only me, but the trans youth community of Randolph and of Vermont due to this disgraceful and defaming news article.”This incident comes as transgender people are under unprecedented attack, especially in Republican-led states. Four states have enacted a partial or total bans on gender-affirming care, and 20 other states are trying to pass such bills. Texas Gov. Greg Abbot declared that parents and health care providers who provide gender-affirming care to trans youth can be investigated for child abuse. Some 85% of trans or nonbinary youth say their mental health has been negatively affected by these laws, and more than half have considered suicide in the past year, according to the Trevor Project, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group.“So much of Rabbit's story absolutely mirrors what is happening across the country and here in Vermont,” said Dana Kaplan, executive director of Outright Vermont, an LGBTQ+ advocacy and support organization. “There's a continuous barrage of messages that are targeting queer and trans young people telling them that they are not valued, that they're not cared for, that they're not allowed to exist, that they're not allowed to access their joy, and really typical things that all young people need to be able to do to develop self confidence (and) to thrive.”At the same time, there has also been an outpouring of support for Rabbit from everyone from her volleyball teammates to strangers who sent her letters.“I just want you to remember that we're children,” volleyball team captain Lilly Patton said to a crowd of about 350 people who attended a public meeting in Randolph in October. “It's one child on the receiving end of all this hate. You're saying all these things to a child who is already at high risk, who already doesn't feel accepted. This child didn't do anything to anyone, especially you adults. I was there. She was where she was supposed to be.”Rabbit said she appreciates these allies. “Any message of support that you can give to trans youth or trans people in general…make it known because, oh my god, it helps so much,” she said.“My hopes and dreams are to show people that they can just be who they are and that they don't need the approval of others or the approval of even their family members,” Rabbit said. “You just need to be you.”

Today's guest for the Mads Singers Management Podcast is none other than Dana Kaplan, all the way from New York City. Dana is an emotional intelligence and education consultant, coach, and the pioneer of DEIAB in ACTION from the womb to 12th grade (*Diversity Equity Inclusion Access and Belonging- IN ACTION). She is an educator who believes that learning is more than the four walls. Following her dream and passion for teaching at-risk children, Dana realized that more should be done in teaching emotional intelligence and bringing diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and belonging into action. Because of this process, Dana discovered that it doesn't matter what the curriculum is or the assignments are if we don't have a strong sense of self. Believing who we are as individuals like our own personal hero led her to develop Empathetic Education with Dana.Despite being at the top of their game, many leaders, business owners, and managers often struggle with emotional intelligence and understanding themselves and the emotional state of the people around them. As Dana pointed out, we are aware of our emotions most of the time. However, we don't know where we create meaning with our emotions most of the time. This is where Dana brings up our childhood experiences, where we associate them with negative experiences, but rather than blame and shame our negative experiences, Dana says we should use those negative emotions as reference points on why we are feeling that way. Having a rich self-awareness allows you to become this rich leader, an even richer participant, and an active listener that will enable us to be engaged in a community. The more you are aware of yourself, the more you understand about yourself, the more you can take action and utilize it for your day-to-day activities. Through playing, one can discover more about ourselves, and when we are willing to play, we are not so focused on the outcome or process but rather on what we can do to play the game; this is something most of us forget once we become adults.    While we may all come in and bring different things to the arena, each of us has something to share with others and a role to play, and in a world of diversity, we should always have spaces where people are not afraid to speak up or share their stories. The most challenging conversations we will have will often be with ourselves, and what may be hard for you won't be hard for another person. The raising of voices, the passive-aggressiveness, hiding from feedback, and pointing the finger at other people can be prevented when we allow ourselves to open up what other people have to share with us and take the opportunity to sit and absorb it.Key Learning Points: Dana aims to create cultures filled with compassion, curiosity, and courage because, ultimately, we all want our voices to be heard, listen to learn, and build a space where we feel a strong sense of belonging. - 02:16 Dana says that while we are aware of our emotions, we often don't know where we create meaning with our feelings- 03:31 Remembering negative emotions from bad experiences doesn't mean we need to relieve them but rather use them as a reference point for what upsets us. - 04:40 Dana says that emotional intelligence can be summed up as knowing who you are as a human and then knowing who you are in an ample space. - 05:41 Mads says that he has always been keen on understanding one's himself because, for him, that is the most effective way to get the most out of yourself and live your best life.. - 06:13 Dana says that when we create a space that invites curiosity, we create opportunities for ourselves, whether in management, leadership, or even just life in general. - 11:28 When asked about what play looks like for adults or people in the corporate world, Dana says it's all about perception; what we do with your object (toy) will be different from what another person will do to their object (toy)- 13:36 While there may be people who don't want to play with you, things can change when they see their leaders roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty and play. - 16:23 Dana says the most challenging conversations we will have will often be with ourselves. - 21:13 Dana says that we should be more open by focusing on the good things that happened around us rather than focusing on that one bad thing and dwelling on negativity to create a culture that propels the people around us and allows them to use their voice again. - 27:52 Resources Mentioned:Adam GrantBrené BrownConnect with Dana Kaplan:LinkedInWebsiteFacebook PageInstagramLinktreeWork with Dana Kaplan

The reason I left the classroom is because my passion for education and for emotional intelligence and for creating a culture of compassion for all is so infused in everything that I do that the only way I could really brought in and become my best self for the world is by stepping out of the classroom - Dana Kaplan   Compassion is one of the virtues we seek to instill in our children, yet they are sorely lacking in many adults today. Even though human beings are social creatures by nature, compassion doesn't come naturally to all of us. Some people are more compassionate than others. Why is that? Well, compassion is an innate and a learned skill that is shaped by how we are wired when we are born, and our own environment and life experiences. To experience compassion to some extent, it means that we have to get in touch with our emotions.   Dana Kaplan, founder of Developing Empathetic Education with Dana (DEED)® gives us a deeper understanding as to the different reasons why there is a decrease in compassion in our society and how most adults are disconnected from their authentic self without even knowing about it.    Dana is a retired award winning classroom educator turned lifetime educator of the world who helps children permanently activate their positively powerful voice while guiding parents on how to release their conscious and unconscious biases, expectations, labels, and limits they place upon their children and their selves.    ----more----   Check Out Dana Kaplan: Find Out More About Dana Kaplan Follow Dana on Instagram Connect with Dana on LinkedIn Add Dana on Facebook   About Your Host: Find Out More About Heather Doran Follow Heather on Instagram Like Heather's FB Page Join Heather's No-Cost Membership   ----more----   Show Notes:   Dana Kaplan 02:54 - And what I was discovering along the way is that adults have missed the mark so much that we don't know where to connect anymore. If we're living authentically, or if we're doing what we think everyone else wants us to do.    Heather Doran 05:08 - We never really understood what was going on and we didn't have the tools to heal, we just became wounded adults in a work environment or in our business    Dana Kaplan 10:03 - The reason my heart and soul is so deeply rooted in kindergarten is because that is the age when we find our voice. When a child between the ages of four and six sees another person crying, they're not going up to that child and saying what's wrong with you? They ask, are you okay? And that shift in question is so critical, because what's wrong with you is a lot of times that we hear from adults speaking to kids, and then that phrase is what sticks with us what's wrong with you. And that phrase is then taken in all places and spaces.    Dana Kaplan 14:43 - But what ultimately we're doing is we are not learning how to help we are labeling and we're preventing growth.   Heather Doran 19:50 - We have to understand that this goes back to knowing ourselves. That it's very hard for us to be vulnerable because we don't know enough about the things about ourselves to even know what's going on to be like, "I'm actually feeling vulnerable right now."   Dana Kaplan 26:49 -  It is critical that spaces are provided now, for humans of all ages, all races, all ethnicities, all identities, where we can actually go back and learn how to use our voice through the act, acts of simple play, the act of having a snack together the act of learning how to build that compassionate culture.   Heather Doran 28:35 - We have been living under this umbrella of this '5am Wake Up' this 'Nine-to-Five Cycle' and this whole thing, but there's people out there who actually do their best work at 10 o'clock at night and work till two, three o'clock in the morning. That's their body cycle. But yet we have forced them into this into this bubble.   Heather Doran 29:24 - The reason why I left the classroom is because I saw like all the red tape policy and all the bullsh*t that we do for education. It just wasn't an alignment.   Heather Doran 31:10 - How many of us go years and years and years, and being so f*cking miserable. Because we never even realize that we have a choice.   Dana Kaplan 33:27 - Parents are like, why are my kids so different from how they were at school? Because they've been structured all day long...   Dana Kaplan 38:51 - When we're so fixated on the outcome, we don't pay attention to the present.    Dana Kaplan 40:51 - Create Your Compassionate Culture™

Today I speak to Dana Kaplan, owner and creator of DEED, a program that ensures everyone has a space to expand beyond barriers with confidence and clarity necessary to achieve and master highly effective communication, critical thinking and owners of their personal learning expedition.  Dana is passionate about teaching, knew at a very young age this is what she wanted to do.  Dana gives the space for social-emotional awareness. From a young age we learn to not speak out or about what is bothering us, what makes us uncomfortable and that follows us to our adult years as well, lets listen, really listen to our kids and give them that space to feel like they are heard.  Dana teaches this to not just children, but adults as well.  We talk about effective communication and learning its ok to have a voice, and to use that voice.  Its powerful Quote from a 5th grader on her blog: "Whenever I felt afraid, she  made me feel brave.  Whenever I felt like I couldn't do something, she made me feel like I could.  Whenever I felt shy, she made me realize I could shine." We all could shine a little more in our lives!   Dana talks to us about the shift that will enable you to effectively communicate in a POSITIVELY POWERFUL way through all phases of your life and provide the necessary tools. We as adults so often hear people tell us to believe in ourselves, but how many of us really do?  Facing fears and self acceptance starts at childhood,  But, it is not too late to change, never too late.  I can still change with my grown kids,  you can too. We love Dana and she has such an amazing light and spirit.
