SAN JUAN, Texas - Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa recently spoke at a luncheon hosted by Hidalgo County Tejano Democrats and LUPE Votes.The event was organized to show support for Democrats in the Texas House of Representatives who have broken quorum in the current special session in Austin. Most of the 58 Democrats are now in Washington, D.C., to urge U.S. senators to pass a federal law that would supersede voting restriction legislation Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is trying to get passed at the state level. Hinojosa said the Texas House Democrats were being asked to make a quorum so Texas House Republicans could vote “to pass Jim Crow legislation, to deprive their own constituents of the right to vote.”How can they ask our people to do that, Hinojosa asked. He said that it would be like having one's family lined up to face a firing squad, “and the guys that are going to shoot your family said, can you load up the weapons for us?”The luncheon was held at Azure Bistro in San Juan. Other speakers at the event were Juan Maldonado of Hidalgo County Tejano Democrats and Danny Diaz of LUPE Votes. They said their communities fully support the Texas House Democrats that broke quorum. “We applaud efforts from our delegation to preserve our voting rights and resist Senate Bill 1 and House Bill 15,” Maldonado told the Rio Grande Guardian. The attached podcast features Hinojosa's speech.

SAN ANTONIO - The future of the San Antonio Police Department is at stake, staring down Danny Diaz, the new president of the San Antonio Police Officers Association (SAPOA). On his first day on the job, Diaz went one-on-one with Randy Beamer about the critical timespan now facing SAPD. Diaz spelled out his number one priority - negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement that in recent years has turned into a bitter, messy battle with the City. The negotiations begin soon with the current CBA set to expire later this year. Diaz and Randy also talked about an attempt to remove these bargaining rights. Currently, there is a group trying to get these rights on the May ballot. Diaz says efforts like these are similar to the ‘Defund the Police' movement. Plus, Mayor Ron Nirenberg is up for re-election. Randy asked Diaz if the SAPOA will stay out of the race. And in answering, Diaz says there are other council districts that may get SAPOA's attention. Diaz became president of the San Antonio Police Officers Association on February 1, 2021. Prior, Diaz served for nearly 30 years with the San Antonio Police Department. During his tenure, Diaz served on South Patrol, in the Street Crimes Unit, and for 20 years as a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit. While executing a narcotics warrant in 2010, he was shot three times. For his service, he was awarded the Meritorious Conduct Award and the Purple Heart. He has also earned several merit awards for apprehensions.
