Political campaign charter aircraft, tariffs and the aerospace industry, Boeings NGAD fighter contract, the adaptive cycle engines to power it, corrosion issues on A220 jetliners, the shutdown of Heathrow, and the resilience of airports to power outages. Guest Jonathan Tasler is Vice President at Advanced Aviation Team. He manages charter aircraft for political campaigns and high-net-worth VIPs. We learn what is involved in transporting presidential and other political candidates, and Jonathan tells us some interesting stories. Jonathan describes how he ensures that a political campaign charter is flown safely to the intended destination on time. We learn that the charter requirements can change as a campaign progresses and presumptive candidates emerge. For example, larger dedicated planes with special campaign livery can become necessary. Jonathan explains how critical it is that candidates do not miss major events. Sometimes he even arranges backup planes and standby crews. We also discover why some charter airlines don't want to be involved in political campaigns and others are happy to be part of a campaign. Jonathan also tells us about campaign security and how the Secret Service may participate in some flights. Jonathan is a veteran of political campaign charters. He grew up in the industry as his father coordinated all the charters for the Bush/Quayle campaign. Over the years, Jonathan has worked with both Republicans and Democrats, including George W. Bush, John Kerry, Mitt Romney, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, and many others. He coordinated aircraft charters for a major party candidate in every US Presidential Campaign cycle since the Bush/Cheney campaign in 2000. Find Advanced Aviation Team at their website, on X, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Some political campaign charter incidents: John Edwards' Campaign Plane Makes Emergency Landing - John Edwards' Boeing 727-200 had to make an emergency landing after a press member's battery exploded in the overhead bins. Ann Romney's Plane Makes Emergency Landing - Ann Romney had electrical fire and smoke in the cabin of Challenger 600 and made an emergency landing in DEN. John Kerry's Boeing 757-200 developed a crack in the windshield in flight. This subsequently developed into a complete spiderweb. Obama plane incident could have been disaster - Barack Obama onboard Midwest Airlines MD81 had control surface issues after an inflatable slide opened in flight. ‘Several failures' led to 2016 plane crash with Vice President Mike Pence, investigation says - Mike Pence's Eastern Airlines B737 overran the runway at LGA. (Not an Advanced Aviation Team contract.) Aviation News Trump's Tariffs Could Deal a Blow to Boeing and the Aerospace Industry The aerospace industry is concerned that tariffs on aluminum and steel will raise manufacturing costs. There is particular concern about tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products since the North American aerospace supply chain is highly integrated. At a recent investor conference, Boeing's chief financial officer said the direct effects of the tariffs on Boeing would be limited, however, they could impact companies further down the aerospace supply chain. Those suppliers have struggled with material and labor shortages. Kevin Michaels, a past guest and a managing director of the AeroDynamic Advisory consulting firm, said the tariffs could raise costs for the aerospace industry by about $5 billion annually. Boeing wins Air Force contract for NGAD next-gen fighter, dubbed F-47 The U.S. Air Force has awarded the contract to develop the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter. Lockheed Martin competed with Boeing for the F-47 sixth-generation fighter, while Northrop Grumman dropped out of the competition in 2023. The Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) contract is thought to be worth about $20 billion.

Ralph welcomes back William Hartung of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. They'll discuss the Cost of War Project's latest reports on US military spending in support of Israel, and the humanitarian costs of the war in Gaza. Then, Ralph is joined by Palestinian writer and analyst Sumaya Awad to discuss the mass civil disobedience at the New York Stock Exchange, which was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace to protest the weapons manufacturers that are making millions off the genocide in Gaza.William Hartung is an expert on the arms industry and US military budget, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He is the author of Prophets of War: Lockheed Martin and the Making of the Military-Industrial Complex, and the co-editor of Lessons from Iraq: Avoiding the Next War.In all my years of watching the operations of Washington—including the Bush/Cheney criminal invasion of Iraq—I have never seen such a servile position by top officials of an administration to a foreign power. Not even close. They are humiliating the United States of America. They are jeopardizing the United States of America—because as you know, the Department of Defense, CIA, NSA have studies and scenarios of blowback. So this war in the Middle East is gonna come back to the US in terms of reprisal and retaliation. And we are not able to anticipate that because we think, as the ruling empire in the world, that we're invulnerable. But we're not invulnerable.Ralph NaderThe Biden administration is living in the past. They've got this “Israel, right or wrong” ideology. They think it's a political detriment to criticize Israel, and the fact that the younger generation is not locked into that point of view. But I think they're going to hurt themselves more by enabling the war crimes that Israel is committing than they would by taking a stand. And of course, they keep trying to say that they're pushing for a ceasefire…But as long as they're doing the weapons and the financing, that is laughable.William HartungIt's just stunning. Given the record of this century—two failed wars, $8 trillion spent, hundreds of thousands killed—and yet they could say with a straight face, “We need a dominant military.” As if that's the tool that's gonna solve any of these problems, rather than make them worse.William HartungSumaya Awad is a Palestinian writer and analyst based in New York City, and she is the spokesperson for Jewish Voice for Peace's mass civil disobedience event at the New York Stock Exchange. Ms. Awad directs strategy and communications for the Adalah Justice Project, and she is a cofounder of the Against Canary Mission Project, which defends student activists targeted by blacklists for their Palestinian rights advocacy. She is the co-author of Palestine and Elections and co-editor of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction. There were over 200 arrests—the majority of them anti-Zionist Jewish New Yorkers, who want to send a clear message both to the US government and the American people that Israel weaponizes their identity in order to justify crimes against humanity and that they are not okay with this. That they refuse for their identity and Jewish people to be weaponized in this way. And that in fact, what Israel is doing and what the US government is funding and politically backing is actively making this country and certainly the rest of the world unsafe not just for Jewish people, but for others.Sumaya AwadWe are strategizing about how to push back against the role of AIPAC and the grip of AIPAC. I think the reality is that there are many people in Congress that are actually benefiting financially from what is happening in Gaza. We know that at least 50 members of Congress have links to the military-industrial complex—whether that's through stocks or other things. And so it's about unraveling this network, these connections between our government, the way it's profiting from the genocide and then what that means in terms of these elections across the country.Sumaya AwadIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantisNews 10/16/241. The Israeli government is finally dropping the facade that the genocide in Gaza is about ‘returning the hostages.' Haaretz reports “According to senior defense officials, the Israeli government is not seeking to revive hostage talks and the political leadership is pushing for the gradual annexation of large parts of the Gaza Strip.” Not only that, apparently “Israel's political leaders have not held any discussions with the various security branches about the condition of the hostages.” In other words, Israel clearly does not care about the hostages at all and are simply using them as political props to prolong their campaign of terror. In addition, the AP reports “Netanyahu is examining a plan to seal off humanitarian aid to northern Gaza,” and if Palestinians are unable or unwilling to leave their homes, they “would be considered combatants — meaning military regulations would allow troops to kill them.” Last weekend, Israel launched an offensive against the Jabaliya refugee camp, resulting in gruesome footage of Palestinians burnt alive while still connected to IV tubes in field hospital tents.2. Responding to a report by NBC, the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), is sounding the alarm that “US officials have discussed joining Israel in offensive strikes against Iran, and passing them off as ‘defensive' after the fact.” As Just Foreign Policy notes, this would not only violate the War Powers Resolution, but “Unnamed US officials” are seeking to circumvent the debate and Congressional vote required for such an act under the Constitution. Now the question becomes whether the American empire will allow itself to be drawn into a rapidly escalating regional war based on Israel's aggression.3. On October 10th, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported “This morning, two peacekeepers were injured after an IDF Merkava tank fired its weapon toward an observation tower at UNIFIL's headquarters in Naqoura, directly hitting it and causing them to fall. The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital.” Beyond this attack, UNIFIL also reports that the IDF fired on the UN positions in Labbouneh and Ras Naqoura, ending by writing “Any deliberate attack on peacekeepers is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and of Security Council resolution 1701.”4. On October 8th, Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal released a statement decrying the lack of action by the organs of U.S. foreign policy regarding the killing of American citizen Aysenur Eygi in the West Bank. Jayapal writes “It has been 32 days…and we have seen no movement toward an independent investigation by the U.S. government and no additional information on changes in the practices of the…IDF…units that are using live ammunition on those who are peacefully protesting…I am frankly appalled…If the Israeli government is unwilling or unable to follow our own domestic laws as well as international humanitarian laws…we must initiate our own investigation into Eygi's killing.”5. In the UK, Jeremy Corbyn and the parliamentary Independent Alliance have sent a letter to Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressing their “disgust over the government's complicity in one of the greatest crimes of our lifetime.” This letter goes on to explain how “the government could have...opposed the genocide in Gaza. It could have ended military, economic and diplomatic support...[and] defended the equal application of international law. Instead, the failure to bring Israel to justice emboldened it to kill thousands of people in Lebanon and now, wage war on the UN.” The letter then asks a series of questions to the British government, including “what red lines, if any, does Israel have to cross for the government to end its diplomatic and political support?” and “does the UK government oppose genocide?”6. In a humiliation for Elon Musk, Forbes reports that Tesla stock slid by nearly $70 billion following the “sour” reaction to the company's unveiling of their absurd new products including a “robotaxi” and “Optimus” humanoid robots. In fact, disappointment in Tesla's “cybercab” was so acute that Uber shares spiked by 11% and Lyft's by 10%. Another story signaling that Tesla is vastly overvalued comes from the Orange County Register, which reports the Irvine Police Department spent over $150,000 on the first ever police Cybertruck. What is the department planning to use this eye-wateringly expensive boondoggle for? According to this report “the department does not plan to use the truck for patrols. The Cybertruck will…principally be driven by DARE officers to schools.”7. According to USA Today, “A study from the University of California Berkeley's Institute for Research on Labor and Employment found that a California state law [which] raised the minimum wage for fast food workers did not lead to large job loses or price hikes.” The law in question, AB 1228 established a “$20 per hour minimum wage for those working at fast food restaurants with less than 60 locations nationwide and restaurants located inside airports, stadiums and convention centers. The law further gave employees stronger protections and the ability to bargain as a sector.” The study found that this law effectively raised average pay of these non-managerial employees by almost 18%, a truly remarkable margin, while prices went up only about 15 cents per $4 item. Hopefully this study will finally put an end to the old canard that raising wages for fast food workers leads to widespread job loss and price increases.8. A depressing story from NPR exposes the US Department of Agriculture's “Wildlife Services” program, described as “a holdover from the 1930s, when Congress gave the federal government broad authority to kill wildlife at the request of private landowners….So long as livestock or human life are threatened.” Employees of this program continue to kill “hundreds of thousands of noninvasive animals a year…Even species considered [endangered]…like grizzly bears.” Yet even within the broad mandate of this program, data shows “employees frequently kill native wild animals without evidence of livestock loss,” including 11,000 in Montana. The USDA and the Bureau of Land Management now face increasing calls to overhaul this outdated program.9. Politiken, a prominent Danish newspaper, reports local harbormaster John Anker Nielsen encountered US Navy vessels at the scene of the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage operation in 2022, per Al Mayadeen. Nielsen, the harbormaster of Christianso, told Politiken that in the days after the explosion he tried to initiate a rescue mission “after noticing ships with their transponders turned off and presuming an emergency.” Yet once they drew near, they discovered the vessels to be US Navy warships. According to Nielsen, “the Naval Command then instructed…[him] to turn back.” This report conforms to the narrative of the Nord Stream sabotage as presented by legendary investigative journalist Seymour Hersh and directly contradicts the narrative put forward by the U.S. government.10. Finally, on October 11th the Democratic National Committee released what it claims is “its first-ever ad focused on third-party candidates,” per DNC Chair Jamie Harrison. The ad features Green Party nominee Jill Stein grotesquely morphing into Donald Trump with dialogue arguing that “a vote for Stein is really a vote for Trump.” As many have remarked, the DNC feeling the need to disseminate such an ad is an ill omen for their chances in the coming election, particularly in Michigan where recent polling shows Stein drawing 40% of Muslim voters, compared to 18% for Trump and just 12% for Kamala Harris, per Reuters. Of course, the DNC could instead direct their efforts to improving their standing with Muslim and Arab voters in Michigan – as well as young progressives throughout the country – by taking a stand against the ongoing genocide in Palestine, but then that isn't really their style. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Like all of the Never Trump lunatics, they're trying justify their turncoat ways by saying that they are voting for a commie to save the country and the Republican Party. There's no way to spin that illogical garbage to make any sense, of course. Kamala Harris is a threat to the Constitution and a host of freedoms that we currently enjoy. As C.A. Skeet wrote yesterday, Dick Cheney's endorsement of Harris is "worthless," but there's a larger point: But his endorsement also speaks to something darker. It speaks to betrayal. If you don't like Trump or his personality, I understand why you wouldn't enthusiastically endorse him. But we rank-and-file conservatives nevertheless expect you to hold your nose and vote for him. Why? Because that's what we've done for you for over two decades now. The Bush-Cheney ticket was nobody's idea of principled conservatism. Your coinage of "compassionate conservatism" rang a lot of instinctive alarm bells, but we held our noses and voted for you anyway. And then we held our noses and voted for McCain. And then we held our noses and voted for Romney. We didn't call for the packing of the Supreme Court after the disastrous Roberts-led decision upholding Obamacare in 2012. We didn't endorse Obama after Bush bailed out Wall Street in 2008. Bingo.  Conservatives — especially those of us who are grassroots activists — have been putting up with less-than-ideal circumstances and candidates for a very long time now. I have never once thought that the best way to express my discontent was to vote for a Democrat for president.  The Democrats of 2024 are not the Democrats of 20 years ago. The party has been lurching hard to the far left for a long time now. There is no common ground to be found with them anymore. Dick and Liz Cheney have adopted the language of the leftists because they are now leftists themselves.  Nikki Haley had some choice words after Liz Cheney said she couldn't understand the former governor's support of Trump. This is from my RedState colleague Jeff Charles: Haley continued, arguing, “This is about my family. This is about America.” “If you don't like him, say you don't like him, but you can't say that his policies are worse than Kamala Harris'. That's just not a fact,” Haley concluded. Sane, truly principled conservatives understand the threat that Kamala Harris poses to the country. As I have written on many occasions, this is not the time to let feelings get in the way. Actually, that's never a good idea, especially in a presidential election. We're trying to choose the leader of the free world, not find a life partner.  The Cheneys and all of the other Bush remnants don't have any principles; they're simply having a years-long temper tantrum because they know that their once-special place in Grand Old Party no longer exists. If the party ever does return to something that is acceptable to the mentally unwell Never Trump crowd, the country probably won't see another Republican president. Again, Donald Trump is the candidate that the Republican Party needs in this election. The party and the country don't need any of the Capitol Hill Club Republicans who find it easier to roll over for the Democrats than to fight tooth and nail for the continued existence of the Republic.  Dick Cheney, J6 Lizzie, and all of the other Never Trump Republicans should plan on hanging out with their commie Dem friends forever now. In the long run, the GOP will be much stronger because they're gone.   Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-kevin-jackson-show--2896352/support.

JD Vance headlined another extraordinary night at the RNC. Donald's granddaughter Kai shared her experience of grandpa. A sweet, thoughtful Donald who checks on her grades, brags to his friends about her, calls her during her school day and sneaks her candy and soda when her parents aren't looking. The Gold Star families, parents and relatives of the fallen 13 at Abbey Gate, shared the same sentiment. President Trump spent 6 hours with a grieving mother, knew all of their names and shared the burden and grief the family was experiencing. A stark contrast to a Joe Biden that refuses to acknowledge the fallen 13 and checked his watch during a moment they were meant to be honored. Finally, JD Vance headlined, sharing a heart-warming story of his grandmother "Mamaw" and his mother's battle with addiction, getting clean and celebrating 10 years of sobriety. She cried tears of joy as she proudly listened to her son. JD also set the tone on a new Republican party, one not tarnished with the Bush-Cheney endless war reputation. A Republican party and administration that only uses its strength when necessary. Our amazing panel gives their thoughts on the night and the continued fallout in the Democratic party. Biden tested positive for COVID and retreated to Delaware. Will he use this moment to drop out of the race? Tonight is the finale of the RNC and President Trump is headlining. By withdrawing from the race, Stone thinks his votes will be split down the middle with half the voters believing DeSantis was America First and the other half seeing through his flirtation with the establishment RINO wing of the party. With DeSantis out, we finally have a race between the America First peace candidate in Trump and the neo-con candidate of the Bush-Cheney wing of the party in Haley. The contrast couldn't be more different. Stone believes Trump is headed towards a massive victory in New Hampshire, possibly a 60% plus win. Latest polling shows Trump getting 67% of the vote in New Hampshire. Then it's on to South Carolina next weekend where the people who know Nikki Haley best are supporting Donald Trump. Stone says it's difficult to beat any incumbent because they control all the levers of power. This Administration has demonstrated a tsunami of Lawfare using all levels of judicial power against Donald Trump. He says these people are willing to do whatever it takes to win. Stone wonders if a declaration of war on Russia is outside the realm of possibility? Or even another pandemic? The last pandemic was used to change state voting laws and the expansion of early voting, which allowed them to keep counting votes long past election day. There is an entrenched uni-party that does not want to give up power and Stone believes they are capable of everything. Stone prays for Donald Trump's safety, as public documents now show that there was government involvement in JFK's murder. First, we sit down with Senator Ted Cruz to discuss the recent political attacks on the Supreme Court and what conservatives can do about woke corporations. Later in the show, General Sami Sadat of Afghanistan calls in for a no holds barred conversation of the United States' withdrawal from his country. Finally, friend of the show Chris Campbell returns with an update on the negotiations over raising the debt ceiling. -Ted Cruz grew up in Texas. His father, Rafael, fled Cuba after being tortured and imprisoned and came to Texas with just $100 sewn into his underwear. Rafael got a job washing dishes making 50 cents an hour and learned English. He worked hard and attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning a degree in mathematics. He later started a small business in the oil and gas industry. Today, Rafael is a pastor in Dallas.Ted's mother, Eleanor, was born in Delaware to an Irish and Italian working-class family. She became the first in her family to go to college, graduating from Rice University with a degree in mathematics. She broke boundaries at Shell as one of the few women working as a computer programmer at the dawn of the computer age.Ted earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton and his law degree from Harvard Law School. After law school, Ted clerked for Chief Justice Rehnquist and then worked in private practice. In 1999, Ted joined George W. Bush's campaign for president as a domestic policy advisor. The best thing about Ted's experience on the Bush-Cheney campaign, by far, was meeting Heidi Nelson, who also worked on the policy team. Heidi and Ted married after the campaign. After working at the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission during the Bush administration, Ted moved back home to be the Solicitor General of Texas. As Solicitor General, Ted argued eight cases before the Supreme Court of the United States, and defended our freedom of speech, our right to keep and bear arms, and our religious liberty in courts across the nation. Following his service as Solicitor General, Ted returned to private practice, where he continued to litigate high stakes cases and argued his ninth case before the Supreme Court.Ted and Heidi also started their family, welcoming Caroline and Catherine.-General Sami Sadat was born 1986 in Afghanistan. After graduation from school in Kabul, he studied military information operations in NATO school in Germany, he also holds a BBA, he then studied advance command and staff college in UK defense Academy and was graduated with highest distinction and also has finished his MA in Strategic Management and Leadership from UK Charter Management institute. His work experience is mostly visible in security sector, he worked as Deputy Director for Strategic Communications and as Policy Advisor to the Minister of Interior in Afghanistan. Mr. Sadat is a founding member of Afghanistan Analysis and Awareness (A3) a Kabul based Think-tank. A3 is a strong lobby group focusing on Afghan-US and other Afghanistan friend countries to foster better strategic relations.-Prior to Kroll, Chris was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Financial Institutions from 2017 to 2018. In that role, he was responsible for coordinating the Department's efforts regarding financial institutions legislation and regulation, legislation affecting federal agencies that regulate or insure financial institutions and securities markets legislation and regulation. Why did Bush/Cheney order the destruction of all US Army investigation data on Al Qaeda terrorists pre-9/11?! We speak directly with Lt. Colonel Anthony Shaffer, (US Army, Ret.) about his role in the US Army data mining project Able Danger which uncovered 2 Al Qaeda terrorist cells that were already being “infiltrated” (recruited?) by the CIA. We'll get to the bottom of what really happened with Tony - and what he thinks about the 22-page bombshell sworn testimony of Guantanamo defense investigator Don Canastraro, which points indelibly to CIA complicity—at least in actively shielding two would-be hi-jackers and their Saudi-intelligence handler from the FBI's awareness, and spying on the FBI — but in “infiltrating” the hi-jackers, and potentially exposing much greater involvement in 9/11. It's all coming to light. And, Tony Shaffer worked with Canastraro for ten years, so we're getting lots of insight here. Our Guest on RichardGage911:UNLEASHED! is Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer (Retired). He is the President of the London Center for Policy Research, a New York Times bestselling author, and CIA trained intelligence operations officer with 35  years of experience in global and national security. He is also an advisor to senior members of the White House, the Intelligence Community, Pentagon and key members of Congress. As a senior DoD intelligence officer, he received the Bronze Star and the Commander's Award for Civil Service for his work on cutting edge, highly classified, DoD special activities. He has detailed operational and policy expertise regarding the full spectrum of strategic national security issues; from being a pioneer in cyber operations, to being at cutting edge of U.S. counterterrorism efforts and helping develop and use of “weaponized technology”.Tony has commanded and directed several key operational intelligence organizations that conducted “compartmented” (black) operations. These include Special Mission Task Force STRATUS IVY, that conducted direct support to DoD compartmented activities (OSD, SOCOM, JSOC, Army) which was focused on offensive information operations. In addition, he commanded Field Operating Base Alpha, a joint DIA/CIA unit conducting classified collection and special operations support regarding terrorists just after the 9/11 attacks. He was brought to active duty by the Army for the first Gulf War in 1991 and transitioned into the Army's Military Intelligence Excepted Career Program (MIECP) where he became the chief of Army's global Controlled HUMINT collection program and ran specific Special Access Program (SAP) operations. In 1995, Tony transitioned to Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), as part of the consolidation of all Service (Army, Navy, Air Force, USMC) HUMINT into the Department of Defense. He became a Senior Intelligence Officer (Operations) and created Task Force STRATUS IVY that conducted the full spectrum of support to Department of Defense, Special Operations Command and other non‐ DoD agencies. This included support to the controversial counterterrorism project known as ABLE DANGER – a pre‐9/11 offensive operation suite designed to detect, degrade and counter Al Qaeda capabilities. In 2001, just after the 9/11 attacks, he was returned to active duty for a 30-month period, during which he commanded a DIA special mission operating base (OB Alpha) and had two successful combat tours to Afghanistan. During his two successful, undercover, combat tours he participated in the search for senior Al Qaeda leadership in Afghanistan.

We continue our indictment of the U.S. war machine by welcoming William Hartung of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft to break down the bloated military budget and what we can do about it. Then Cindy Sheehan, joins us to talk about her journey as the mother of a fallen soldier to become the most prominent anti-war activist of the Bush/Cheney era. Plus, Ralph comes down hard on states that deny their citizens Medicaid.William Hartung is an expert on the arms industry and US military budget, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He is the author of Prophets of War: Lockheed Martin and the Making of the Military-Industrial Complex, and the co-editor of Lessons from Iraq: Avoiding the Next War.The Pentagon wants to get rid of some of these weapon system programs, and the Congress says “Oh no, we're going to continue them because… it's a jobs program. It creates jobs, or it retains jobs that are already in shipyards or elsewhere.” Of course, you can never get these members of Congress to understand that a billion dollars in civilian infrastructure investment in this country creates far more jobs than a highly capital-intensive billion dollars in another unneeded weapons system.Ralph NaderI think there's three pillars…What are the costs of this—the opportunity costs?...What do we need to defend ourselves?...And then I think people need to feel like they can influence the government. I think a lot of people have given up. They forget that citizens' movements have had tremendous victories in the past, and they can do so again.William HartungCindy Sheehan is the mother of Casey A. Sheehan, who was killed in action in Iraq on April 4, 2004. She is an anti-war activist, the founder of Gold Star Families, and an organizer of the 2018 Women's March on the Pentagon. She is the author of Cindy Sheehan's Soapbox Newsletter on Substack.I think that as long as you stay in the safe zone of only criticizing Republicans if you're a Democrat, or only criticizing Democrats if you're a Republican, then they give you a platform, they let you use your voice on this national stage. But once I recognized that the Democratic Party were, at that point, enablers of the Bush/Cheney war of terror around the world, and I left the party, then I started to be even more marginalized. And I lost so much support.Cindy SheehanWhat gave me a little bit of hope was the county DA of New York indicting and arresting Donald Trump— for things I think were far less damaging and far less criminal than what the other living presidents like George Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama did. I think that if the DA can prosecute Donald Trump for something less than mass murder or genocide, then maybe my DA in my county I live in can prosecute George Bush for murdering my son.Cindy SheehanIn Case You Haven't Heard1. CNN reports that seven investigators from the Centers for Disease Control fell ill “while studying the possible health impacts” of the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. These investigators experienced sore throats, headaches, coughing and nausea, the same symptoms many residents have reported. In testimony before the Senate in March, Alan Shaw, CEO of Norfolk Southern, said “I believe that the air is safe. I believe that the water is safe.”2. A contingent of left-wing youth at the recent protests in Israel burned their IDF enlistment orders. While this exceedingly courageous act garnered much attention on social media, the sad reality is that the overwhelming majority of Israeli youth are in fact more right-wing than older Israelis and far more right-wing than young people in most every other country. A 2021 poll written up by Haaretz, revealed that “nearly half of ultra-Orthodox and national religious Israeli youth expressed hatred toward Arabs and noted support for stripping them of their citizenship, a sentiment shared by 23 percent of secular youth.”3. A new poll, published in Forbes, shows the impact of Governor Ron DeSantis' education policies: “91% of prospective college students disagree with the governor's policies, 1 in 8 graduating high school students won't attend college in Florida due to the education policy in the state, [and] 1 in 20 current college students in the state plan to transfer because of those policies.”4. The Huffington Post reports that Amazon spent $14.2 million on anti-union consultants in 2022, up nearly $10 million from 2021. This is clearly in response to the successful unionization vote at the JFK8 facility under the auspices of the independent Amazon Labor Union last year.5. In a related story, Bloomberg reports that a federal appeals court has ruled that Elon Musk “must delete his 2018 Twitter post suggesting that Tesla...workers could lose stock options if they formed a union, as it violated labor law.” The panel of 5th circuit judges unanimously opined that “Tesla's history of labor violations supports the NLRB's finding that employees would understand Musk's tweet as a threat to commit another violation by rescinding stock options as retaliation,” for union organizing.6. Rep. Rashida Tlaib is collecting signatures on an official letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland calling on him to end the Justice Department's campaign to have Julian Assange extradited to the U.S., according to the Intercept. So far, other signatories include Reps. Jamaal Bowman, Ilhan Omar, and Cori Bush, with Reps. Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal, and AOC expected to sign on before it is sent.7. A new report in the Intercept details the increasing size of settlements being paid out to victims of police violence in the 2020 protests, including tear gassing and “kettling” – the police tactic of trapping and surrounding protesters, usually to carry out mass arrests. Due to the legal structures in place, local taxpayers, not police departments, will foot the bill for these settlements.8. In a historic shift, the Vatican has responded to calls by Indigenous activists and repealed the so-called “Doctrine of Discovery” which “legitimized the colonial-era seizure of Native lands and form the basis of some property laws today.” The Vatican acknowledged that this doctrine “did not adequately reflect the equal dignity and rights of Indigenous peoples." This was reported by the indigenous-led news service Indian Country Today.9. From Reuters: The Biden Administration “plans to send Mexico an "act now or else" message in coming weeks in an attempt to break a stalemate” over Mexico's decision to nationalize energy and other key resources. Under the rules of the neo-NAFTA trade agreement signed in 2020, the U.S. is entitled to international dispute talks, but has not called for them thus far, instead opting to work with the Canadian government to threaten retaliatory measures against Mexico. U.S. Republicans meanwhile are calling for an invasion of our southern neighbor.10. Bowing to ranching and mining interests, the Intercept reports President Biden is continuing a Trump-era policy of rounding up wild horses in order to clear more land for cattle grazing and extraction. Once the horses have been corralled, the mares will be dosed with contraceptives. Manda Kalimian, president of the wild horse and environmental advocacy group Cana Foundation, is quoted saying “We feel betrayed, because we thought this was an administration that really believed in wildlife protections.”11. Mark Joseph Stern of Slate reports that Judge Reed O'Connor struck down a “major provision of the Affordable Care Act requiring insurers to cover a vast amount of preventive care cost-free.” These include contraception, cancer screening, the HIV prevention drug PrEP, and much pregnancy-related care. The ruling applies nationwide.12. Remember the egg shortage? According to CNN, Cal-Maine Foods – the largest egg producer in the nation – reported that their revenue doubled and profits surged to 718% last quarter as consumers struggled to afford the basic food item. Corporate greed, plain and simple. Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

Ralph welcomes old friend, Judge Andrew Napolitano, to talk about why the U.S. government offered a plea deal to the supposed mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and four others. He asks, “Why would the government agree to such a plea for the persons it claims are the monsters who murdered 3,000 Americans on 9/11?... What does the government fear?” Plus, Ralph gives us his take on the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. And then on a lighter note, we talk about the Super Bowl.Judge Andrew Napolitano is a former Superior Court Judge, a syndicated columnist, and host of the Judging Freedom podcast. Judge Napolitano has taught constitutional law and jurisprudence at Delaware Law School and Seton Hall Law School, and he was Fox News' Senior Judicial Analyst from 1997 to 2021. He is the author of several books on the U.S. Constitution, the most recent entitled Freedom's Anchor: An Introduction to Natural Law Jurisprudence in American Constitutional History.“I would try (Bush & Cheney) for war crimes for which there is no statute of limitations… the war crimes are well-known. The war crimes are leading us into war under false pretenses; intentionally targeting civilians in the Middle East; authorizing torture and purporting to protect it against state law if done in the U.S. and international law. These are all well-known war crimes for which the penalty is life in prison. They can also be execution… There is still an E.U.-wide arrest warrant live out there issued by Spanish authorities for the arrest of George W. Bush, because of the war crimes I have just summarized.”Judge Andrew Napolitano“George W. Bush, arguably the worst president in the post-World War II era for bringing us into two totally useless and very costly wars – Afghanistan and Iraq – which cost us in excess of two trillion dollars, which had over 850 thousand people killed – only five thousand were Americans – which destroyed the moral order in that part of the world for a full generation also instituted a regime of torture. I believe, Ralph, as do many of us who follow this – we haven't seen it in writing – that Bush somehow pardoned or granted immunity to the torturers, because the torture was so vast and so extensive, and no one has been prosecuted for it. Obama and Holder who said loudly that they were against torture had every opportunity to do it. And they knew the names of the torturers, but it just didn't happen.”Judge Andrew Napolitano“I do believe that Rupert Murdoch called up Donald Trump and said to him, to Murdoch's credit - to his face, although it was on the phone – ‘you are just not institutionally, constitutionally, or temperamentally, or intellectually qualified to be the president of the United States and we will not support you.'”Judge Andrew NapolitanoThis is super Sparta on steroids—the aggressiveness, the lack of diplomacy, the lack of waging peace by the US government. It's like they've mothballed the charter of the State Department, which was diplomacy. They've turned it into a bellicose agency, sometimes much worse than the spokespeople for the Defense Department.Ralph Nader Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

Three generations of evil carried the Bush family name, and all of them were focused on trying to dismantle America while pretending to do the exact opposite. From financing the rise of Adolph Hitler to running the CIA, to shooting American presidents and kicking off multiple wars in the Middle East, the Bush family has been deeply involved in just about every major war over the past century. If George H.W. Bush was the Emperor, then Dick Cheney was Darth Vader, using fear and intimidation to silence the media from questioning his intentions to forcing his will on Congress and the courts to support Draconian changes to the laws regarding privacy and due process. Dick Cheney was the most destructive Vice President in American history, but there is more to his story than most people realize. It's tough to talk about religion without discussing politics... For my generation, the two subjects are kind of "joined at the hip." You had Christian church on Wednesdays and Sundays, and republican church every night of the week thanks to good ol' Fox News. In fact, I'll bet I've logged almost as many hours listening to the likes of Shawn Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and Bill O'Reilly as I have listening to pastors. As a kid, I attended Right to Life demonstrations, handed out yard signs for republican candidates, and there's even a picture of me unknowingly holding a Bush/Cheney sign at a trainside rally in the bustling metropolis of Durand, MI (home of Uncle Buck's Northern Exposure, a strip club with a bare butt beaver on the sign). How's that for a resume builder?   Our guest today is journalist Katherine Stewart, author of the books "The Good News Club: The Christian Right's Stealth Assault on America's Children," and "The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism." Katherine's most recent book is the culmination of over ten years of research, and it catalogs the efforts of powerful evangelical and political leaders to organize and mobilize the Christian community. The Washington Post called it "required reading for anyone who wants to map the continuing erosion of our already fragile wall between church and state." It's a fascinating, albeit troubling read that we can't recommend enough!   Enjoy the episode, and get in on the conversation by joining our Discord server! Find the link on our social media pages.

When he turned to law enforcement and the FBI, Spencer was met with hostility and dragged into a Kafkaesque situation that nearly killed him. Turning to the courts for relief and justice, he found himself before a bought judge mandated to kill his case. David Waldman welcomes you to today’s post-holiday KITM special! How was your Presidents Day, George Washington’s second birthday, the Ides of February (following the Nones, before the Pridie to the Kalend, et cētera)? You learn a lot on this show! For instance, do you know who’s responsible for the “Reid Rule”? You would, if you’ve been paying attention in class... Joan McCarter reminds us that the filibuster is the enemy of democracy. Krysten Sinema and Joe Manchin believe the filibuster is their friend, but it just makes them Republican tools voting against popular and needed legislation. Reconciliation probably won’t hurt Democrats unless Republicans really want it to. The House adopted a new set of rules which also helped aid majority rule (which of course, aids minorities). Federal Judges rush to senior status, assured their replacements won’t embarrass them. More than four million people are still without power in Texas. If only they could just harness the energy of Republican blame shifting, they’d be ok. With Donald Trump, blame shifters have a lot of heavy lifting ahead of them. They’ve stayed in shape, though. They are doing to Nancy Pelosi what they plan to do to Kamala Harris, and what they did for years with Hillary Clinton. David remembers the first time they pulled their “what did Pelosi know and when did she know it?” shtick with the Bush-Cheney torture “debate”. Unfortunately, the aughts are a long-lost time, back when the internet was horse-drawn, folks watched a thing called Adobe Flash Player, and Glenn Greenwald hadn’t yet descended into madness.

On matters of war, Donald Trump has consistently spoken and acted in contradictory and unorthodox ways. He campaigned in 2016 with a mixed message of attacking the legacy of the Iraq war and U.S. military adventurism, while simultaneously pledging to commit war crimes and promote imperialism as a matter of policy. On part four of American Mythology, we take an in-depth look at Trump’s war and national security policies. He escalated drone strikes in Somalia and Afghanistan, authorized troop surges and massive bombings in Iraq, launched cruise missile strikes in Syria, and threatened to “totally destroy North Korea.” On the other hand, he signed a deal with the Taliban to withdraw U.S. forces, attempted to end the Korean War, and claims to have fired John Bolton to avoid being in “World War 6.” In assessing Trump’s war policies, we seek to navigate past the rhetoric from Trump and his critics and examine his place in the history of U.S. presidents. In many ways, Trump has represented a continuity of U.S. policy with largely tactical differences from his predecessors. Overall, Trump built on some of the worst excesses of the Bush/Cheney administration and took advantage of the weak guardrails left behind by the Obama administration. If George H.W. Bush was the Emperor, then Dick Cheney was Darth Vader, using fear and intimidation to silence the media from questioning his intentions to forcing his will on Congress and the courts to support Draconian changes to the laws regarding privacy and due process. Aired Tuesday, 31 July 2018, 5:00 PM ESTHeartland Security and a NEWER World Order – The International Rule of Law and the “Eisenhower Moment”An Interview with Jonathan Granoff, President of the Global Security Institute“If war is a ‘necessary evil’ why not establish peace as a necessary good?” — Swami BeyondanandaGlobalism.Over the past two decades, the word has devolved from the ideal of a “Spaceship Earth” where the peoples of the world transcend national borders to work and act for the common good of all, to a nefarious totalitarian “new world order” imposed by the ruling elite.Indeed, the neo-conservatism of the Bush-Cheney years, and the neo-liberalism of Obama and the Clintons certainly seem to have institutionalized corporatism as our planetary ruler. Playing on the understandable mistrust of the corporate state, Donald Trump vowed to liberate America from non-beneficial agreements globally, and “drain the swamp” at home.Drain the swamp he has, and now the liberated alligators are everywhere.Meanwhile, Trump’s National (In)Security Advisor, John Bolton has taken on the task of abrogating the Iran Nuclear Treaty and setting us on a path toward war.Our guest this week Jonathan Granoff is an attorney, author and international advocate emphasizing the legal and ethical dimensions of human development and security, with a specific focus on advancing the rule of law to address international security and the threats posed by nuclear weapons. He serves on numerous governing and advisory boards including: Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy, Fortune Forum, Jane Goodall Institute, the NGO Committee on Disarmament, Peace and Security, Parliamentarians for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament, and Middle Powers Initiative. He is a recipient of the Rutgers University School of Law’s Arthur E. Armitage Distinguished Alumni Award and a 2014 nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize. His most recent article (http://thehill.com/opinion/national-security/386913-trump-us-dont-have-the-legal-right-to-violate-iran-nuclear-deal#) is about the illegality of our withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear deal. Our conversation will be about how to take the word “globalism” back, and take the cause of global peace forward. Many years ago, Dwight D. Eisenhower famously said, “I think that people want peace so much that one of these days government had better get out of their way and let them have it.”Have we finally reached that “Eisenhower moment” where the truth of unity will overgrow the illusion of separation, and where we can evolve past tribalism to recognize ourselves as cells in a super-organism called “humankind”? And … how can what our colleague Caroline Casey calls “the sane and reverent” among us create a spiritual firewall to overgrow Trumpism AND the corporate state?Tune in this Tuesday, July 31st at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET as we discuss how we can collectively “go sane” : http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/Or, find us on the Wiki archives on Wednesday: http://wikipolitiki.com/archives/How you can support Wiki PolitikiIf you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/ Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! Another Tuesday night and you know that means great guests on the Tami Jackson Show*! In the first 1/2 hour I will be speaking with Rich Botkin. Rich, a retired Marine officer, served four years active, eleven in the reserves. Botkin is the author of Ride the Thunder: A Vietnam War Story of Honor and Triumph, a magnificent work of military history centered on the Easter offensive and the American and Vietnamese Marines. The tome highlights many brave men, including: Col G.H. “Gerry” Turley, Col John Ripley (“Skipper”), and Maj Le Ba Binh, who fought in a war demonized and undermined by the Mainstream Media and The Left. Ride the Thunder tells the story of American Marines, Covan, and the TQLC, a story not well-known by so many Americans. Ride the Thunder is the result of 5 years of writing and 4 trips to Vietnam, and was made into a motion picture in March of 2015. Rich and I will talk about his new article, Will Ken Burns' Twisted Version of Vietnam War Endure? The article begins: “No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now.” Richard Nixon's 1994 post-war observation remains as prescient as ever. With the release of the Ken Burns/Lynne Novick epic 10-part PBS documentary on the war last month, it is safe to say that the misreporting and misremembering have only been compounded and exacerbated. Sadly, the American taxpayers have funded this new Burns/Novick series which only continues The Left's narrative of the Vietnam War. Listen as Rich and I debunk what Ken Burns and Lynne Novick assert. Botkin writes in his article: If nothing else, the release of the Burns/Novick work has ignited a firestorm of passionate response from those men who honorably served. And it was their stories, including those of our South Vietnamese allies, that went largely untold in 18 long, tortuous hours. Our hope is that perhaps a backlash will occur, that thousands will obtain copies of the Ride the Thunder movie, now available in DVD and Blu-Ray, and that the light of truth will reveal the Burns series to be a terrible misrepresentation of the war and those who honorably served. ******************* In the second 1/2 hour I will be talking to Doug Ibendahl. Doug Ibendahl is a Chicago attorney and former General Counsel of the Illinois Republican Party. In 2000, he was named Illinois Coordinator for Young Professionals for George W. Bush (YP4W), a national volunteer coalition of the Bush-Cheney 2000 campaign. Doug also served on the Bush-Cheney legal team in Florida during the 2000 Presidential recount. Before starting his own law and consulting practice, Doug was an attorney with one of the world's largest law firms, Mayer Brown LLP in Chicago. His practice concentrated in the firm's corporate, finance and government groups, and included Fortune 500 corporate clients, as well as governmental entities. Ibendahl is the Co-Founder of Republican Young Professionals (RYP), an all volunteer grassroots organization dedicated to introducing younger people to political and community involvement. He has worked on numerous political and legislative campaigns. Doug is a widely read political commentator and Editor-in-Chief of RepublicanNewsWatch.com. From 2008 to 2010 he also co-hosted a popular Sunday morning political talk show on AM 560-WIND. Doug and I will be talking about President Donald Trump, his successes, his adversaries, and the controversy over Trump's condolence call to Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, one of the soldiers killed in the ambush in Niger. Ibendahl was an early Trump supporter and predicted he would win. Now we'll hear how he thinks the president is measuring up. Join Dr. Carlos as he explores if American intervention has gone too far? A companion to Oliver Stone's ten-part documentary series of the same name, this guide offers a people's history of the American Empire: “a critical overview of US foreign policy…indispensable” (former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev); “brilliant, a masterpiece!” (Daniel Ellsberg); “Oliver Stone's new book is as riveting, eye-opening, and thought-provoking as any history book you will ever read. It achieves what history, at its best, ought to do: presents a mountain of previously unknown facts that makes you question and re-examine many of your long-held assumptions about the most influential events” (Glenn Greenwald). In November 2012, Showtime debuted a ten-part documentary series based on Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick's The Untold History of the United States. The book and documentary looked back at human events that, at the time, went underreported, but also crucially shaped America's unique and complex history over the twentieth centuryFrom the atomic bombing of Japan to the Cold War and fall of Communism, this concise version of the larger book is adapted for the general reader. Complete with poignant photos, arresting illustrations, and little-known documents, The Concise Untold History of the United States covers the rise of the American empire and national security state from the late nineteenth century through the Obama administration, putting it all together to show how deeply rooted the seemingly aberrant policies of the Bush-Cheney administration are in the nation's past and why it has proven so difficult for Obama to change course. In this concise and indispensible guide, Kuznick and Stone (who Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Garry Wills has called America's own “Dostoevsky behind a camera”) challenge prevailing orthodoxies to reveal the dark truth about the rise and fall of American imperialism.Peter Kuznick is professor of history and director of the award-winning Nuclear Studies Institute at American University and is currently serving his fourth term as distinguished lecturer with the Organization of American Historians. He has written extensively about science and politics, nuclear history, and Cold War culture.

At the Harvard Business School, which George W. Bush attended, there are many case studies about business partnerships.  One of the recurring themes is that in tough times partnerships are easy. When everyone is struggling for a common goal, unity is always easier.  But when a business starts to succeed, the partnership is always a lot tougher.Political partnerships are different, but still similar.  There is no bottom line to worry about, but when one partner starts to succeed politically,  ahead of the other, usually there is trouble and strain on the relationship. The Bush/Cheney partnership is a good example. It seems that every modern Presidential aspirant, when he picks a Vice-Presidential nominee, says that it’s going to be a unique and special partnership.  The Bush /Cheney partnership was certainly true to that, especially given the events of 9/11 and the impact that the partnership had on the nation, in ways that we’ll be living with for decades to come.  That’s why New York Times, Chief White House correspondent, Peter Baker's new book, Days of Fire: Bush and Cheney in the White House is so important and so central to understanding the history of the Bush administration. My conversation with Peter Baker:

Virtual Memories - season 3 episode 6 - Cartoon Character "Political cartoonists have it easy: we turn on the TV or computer and Sarah Palin has said some inane thing . . . and the cartoons can write themselves. In the world of cartooning, we're the lazy bastards." Matt Wuerker, winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning, joins The Virtual Memories Showto talk about his career (including his fascinating non-comics work and his prescient move to the online world with POLITICO), the experience of winning "the Academy Award for cartoonists", his artistic and political influences, what it takes to get on the NRA's Enemies List, the opportunities for editorial cartoonists in a post-print world, how his parents felt about his decision to become a cartoonist, whether he had it easier during the Bush/Cheney era or the Tea Party era, and why he thinks the golden age of cartooning is still ahead of us! "One of the great cosmic quandaries for cartoonists is that what's bad for the world is great for cartooning." Enjoy the conversation! Then check out our archives for more great talks! Follow The Virtual Memories Show on iTunes, Facebook, Tumblr, and RSS! About our Guest Matt Wuerker has been POLITICO's editorial cartoonist and illustrator since its launch in 2007. In 2012, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning, POLITICO's first Pulitzer win. In 2009, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in editorial cartooning. Over the past 25 years, his work has appeared in publications ranging from The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times to Smithsonian and the Nation, among many others. Along the way, he's also pursued other artistic tangents that have included claymation, outdoor murals, teaching cartooning in prison (as a visitor, not as an inmate), book illustration and animating music videos. Matt thinks Saul Steinberg is a cartoon god and the Peter Principle explains pretty much everything, and he also thinks the maxim "If you're not confused, you're just not thinking clearly" is one of the wisest things ever said. Matt lives in Washington, D.C., in close proximity to the National Zoo and the Swiss Embassy. Depending how bad things get, he hopes to find asylum in one or the other. This week on The Farm Report, Erin Fairbanks is joined by wealth of guests to discuss the issue of hydraulic fracturing, better known as hydrofracking. Erin talks with Heather Carlucci-Rodriguez and Alissa Westervelt of Chefs for the Marcellus, a group of New York City chefs and food purveyors raising awareness about the harmful health effects of fracking. Joining via the phone lines is Greg Swartz of Willow Wisp Farm, talking about how hydrofracking circumvents the Clean Water Act via exceptions granted by the Bush-Cheney administration. Also calling in is Luce Guanzini of Highwood Farm. She discusses the “No Surface Rights” lease that prevents gas companies from entering private properties. How do these technologies impact our food systems? This episode has been brought to by Hearst Ranch. “It [fracking] directly impacts our watershed. You can’t do anything without water, namely grow food. It doesn’t relegate itself to farm-to-table…but it really affects everything – industrial food and fast food.” —Heather Carlucci-Rodriguez on The Farm Report “If hydrofracking safe, why do they need an exemption from basic environmental legislation?” —Greg Swartz on The Farm Report

Don't Piss In My Pocket And Tell Me It's Raining

Big government is the new boogieman. Or should I say the old one. Ronald Reagan famously said that government is the problem, and this simplistic statement has found resonance with generations of conservatives, from the greedy elites, who adore the fallacies of trickle-down economics, to the angry populists of the tea party movement. When it comes to the tea partiers, their new-found hysteria over deficits underscores how well they’ve been manipulated by the likes of Beck and Hannity, because during Bush’s 8 years, while deficit spending soared, not least because of unprecedented tax breaks for the super rich that yielded little for the middle class, the tea partiers, the pundits, and the Republican congressmen and senators who now loudly decry Obama’s deficit spending were all curiously silent. In fact, those elected officials were actually complicit, voting for drug bills, increased privatization, boondoggle arms procurements, no bid contracts, tax breaks, and, of course, ill-fated military adventures, all of which cost every tax payer dearly. Now they shed crocodile tears and have become born-again fiscal conservatives. And the average Joe on the street has likewise once again caught the fever of fiscal conservatism; Except when it comes to his tax breaks; Or our obscene and ultimately untenable military budget; Or the two wars that are costing more than all of the fiscal stimulus plans put together. What’s more, that same man on the street, who somehow feels that taxes are an unnecessary burden, expects the National Guard to save his house from floods, the forest service to protect his home from wildfires, the military to protect him from foreign aggression and domestic insurrection; Somehow.Even more of a disconnect becomes apparent when you study the demographics of these fiscal conservatives. They dominate the red states that voted for Bush Cheney, and also for McCain Palin. But most of the red states are fiscal leaches, net beneficiaries of federal funding to states. In fact, some 76% of the states that voted for Bush in 2000 are pigs at the federal trough, taking far more than their fair share. Some of the worst offenders include that fiercely independent state, North Dakota, which gets over 2 dollars back from evil big government for every dollar it puts in. Mississippi, which nets $1.84, and of course, when you include their unshared oil revenues, America’s biggest socialist experiment and welfare state, Alaska. And the biggest losers? Places like New York, Massachusetts, and California. Those miserable liberals who want to waste people’s hard-earned tax dollars are wasting them on… subsidizing born-again populists who keep whining about the bloated federal government while they feast on its largesse. It’s so ironic as to be laughable, but I’m not laughing. At a tea party meetup the other day, a speaker accused the federal government of ‘stealing our hard-earned tax dollars to send to those liberals back east’ – an almost complete inversion of the facts. But let’s not confuse these folks with the truth. The fact is that almost all of the Bush tax cut money went to the super-rich. A stunning 1.8 trillion dollars, a sum that exceeds even the health care bill. That, plus his reckless war in Iraq has cost the American taxpayer far, far more than any Democratic president in modern history, but that’s another inconvenient truth. Ironically, what damaged Bush’s reputation the most was not his profligate spending and mad cowboy disease warmongering. What really turned the American people against him was the failure of big government after Katrina. People were rightly incensed that the most powerful country in the world seemed completely helpless and useless. Some even blamed big government for this, pointing out that Wal Mart and other non-governmental organizations provided speedier, more efficient aid. But they missed the larger point: the capable James Lee Witt, director of FEMA during the Clinton administration, was sacked by Bush and replaced with the clueless, do nothing, fiddle-while-Rome-burns ,‘Brownie’, Michael Brown. Under Bush, FEMA’s budget was slashed, and it once again became a dumping ground for political appointees, hacks like Brown who were owed favors. It wasn’t big government by its nature that failed the residents of the Gulf coast, but rather the hollowing out of big government, which has been destroyed by privatization, budget cuts, and cronyism. If the tea partiers really want to put their money where their mouth is, they should start sending our government the money they’re stealing from the liberals back East. Bill Lindley will interview David Swanson on his latest book: Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union.Daybreak is a prescription for political reform that literally ends with a to-do list for citizens, and draws inspiration from the misdeeds and missteps of the Bush and Obama presidencies. What powers were stripped from Congress and handed to the White House while George W. Bush lived there, and what would it take to permanently move them back? Which of these powers is Barack Obama making use of or even expanding upon? And in the future, how can we expand our rights, create democratic representation in Congress, and make presidents into executives rather than emperors? This is a citizens' guide to the long-term task of removing power from the hands of one person, placing it in a body of representatives, and (here's the hard part) making that body truly representative of the American people. Swanson's analysis makes clear that the imperial presidency, which advanced so dramatically during the Bush-Cheney era, will not be stopped merely by electing better presidents. Major structural changes are needed in our system of government to rein in both the imperial presidency and, at the same time, the presidential empire. Only through the active efforts of citizens, Swanson argues, can we restore and protect our rights, and expand our conception of political rights to meet new challenges. The publisher is Seven Stories Press. Two contradictory statements cannot both be true. These contradictions show, therefore, that individuals and agencies articulating the official story of 9/11 have made many false statements. Congress and the press clearly should ask which of the contradictory statements are false and why they were made. This book is purely factual, simply laying out the fact that these internal contradictions exist. As such, the book contains no theory. Politicians and journalists who deal with the issues raised herein, therefore, will not be giving credence to some "conspiracy theory" about 9/11. They will simply be carrying out their duty to ask why the official story about 9/11, arguably the most fateful event of our time, is riddled with so many contradictions.  The New Pearl Harbor Revisited: 9/11, the Cover-Up, and the Expose Griffin has now written The New Pearl Harbor Revisited, which provides a chapter-by-chapter updating of the information provided in that earlier book. It shows that the case against the official account constructed by independent researchers – who now include architects, engineers, physicists, pilots, politicians, and former military officers – is far stronger than it was in 2004, leaving no doubt that 9/11 was a false flag operation, designed to give the Bush-Cheney administration a pretext to attack oil-rich Muslim nations. The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions About the Bush Administration and 9/11 Taking to heart the idea that those who benefit from a crime ought to be investigated, here the eminent theologian David Ray Griffin sifts through the evidence about the attacks of 9/11 – stories from the mainstream press, reports from abroad, the work of other researchers, and the contradictory words of members of the Bush administration themselves – and finds that, taken together, they cast serious doubt on the official story of that tragic day p>  9/11 and American Empire: Intellectuals Speak Out, Vol. 1 Practically from the moment the dust settled in New York and Washington after the attacks of September 11, a movement has grown of survivors, witnesses, and skeptics who have never quite been able to accept the official story. When theologian David Ray Griffin turned his attention to this topic in his book The New Pearl Harbor (2003), he helped give voice to a disquieting rumble of critiques and questions from many Americans and people around the world about the events of that day. Were the military and the FAA really that incompetent? Were our intelligence-gathering agencies really in the dark about such a possibility? In short, how could so much go wrong at once, in the world's strongest and most technologically sophisticated country? Both the government and the mainstream media have since tried to portray the 9/11 truth movement as led by people who can be dismissed as "conspiracy theorists" able to find an outlet for their ideas only on the internet. This volume, with essays by intellectuals from Europe and North America, shows this caricature to be untrue. Coming from different intellectual disciplines as well as from different parts of the world, these authors are united in the conviction that ...
