Texas House Democrats are urging Gov. Greg Abbott to call a special session to increase public school funding, while Abbott is criticizing them for opposing legislation last year that tied increased funding to his pet project — school vouchers. The Austin American-Statesman reported the Democrats sent a letter, written by Rep. Jon Rosenthal, D-Houston, calling for a 30-day special session focused on both increasing per-student funding and investing more in school safety. A number of Texas school districts are facing funding shortages for the 2024-25 school year budgets after no additional school funding was approved during the last legislative session,...Article Link

The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Republicanism is about dispersing power and opposing its concentration in any one person or institution – so why have Texas Republicans, from legislators to the governor to Supreme Court justices, punted so often and been afraid to act on the clear wrongs in the Texas Disaster Act? Is it political cowardice, ignorance, or a desire to have such power? No matter the answer, we are not well served by all the dancing around the fundamental problems shown by Abbott's use of the Disaster Act, for many years, to amass centralized power.Brad Johnson, of The Texan, covers this issue as well as it has been covered in: Constitutionality of State Disaster Powers Remains Unaddressed by Texas Supreme Court. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Texas House Democrats take advantage of Republican in-action on property tax relief with their own vote-buying planthat will get good press. Back in July, Texas House Democrats left the state and headed to Washington D.C. in order to deny Republicans the quorum needed to pass voting restrictions in order to suppress the vote. Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett (representing the 100th District) was one of those legislators, and she joins the show today, still holding strong in D.C., while some of her colleagues have decided to return to Texas therefore reinstating quorum. She explains that while she hopes they're onto something she doesn't yet understand, she wants to know why they'd potentially assist in passing legislation that includes provisions directly targeting their county and constituents. She also discusses the possibility of federal lawsuits against the state of Texas for passing such restrictive legislation, infringing on citizens' right to vote. Republican lawmakers in Texas seem obsessed with passing extreme voter suppression legislation, banning critical race theory and outlawing abortion outright. In protest, Texas House Democrats have fled the state en masse and are making national news while camped out in the U.S. capital. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to arrest legislators when they return from Washington, D.C., *and* vowed to call special session after special session until the elections bill passes. On Saturday, July 31, thousands of people descended upon the Texas Capitol with signs demanding lawmakers “Protect Voting Rights," “End the Filibuster” and “Say No to Jim Crow."So … what the heck is happening in Texas?! If you haven't been following along, don't worry—we've got you covered in this week's edition of “On the Issues,” 15 Minutes of Feminism. (Okay, 17 minutes!) Helping us to sort out what the heck is happening in Texas is: Texas state Representative Donna Howard, one of the Democrats that fled the state. She represents Texas's own district 48, based in Austin. She's an Austin native, has served in the Texas House of Representatives since 2006, and is a member of the House Appropriations Committee and State Affairs Committee, as well as the chair of the Women's Health Caucus. On The Texan's "Weekly Roundup" podcast, the team gives updates and details enforcement actions that have — and haven't — been utilized to bring the still-missing Texas House Democrats back to Austin. Additionally, the reporting team discusses a state senator's attempt to strip the governor of power, UT's plan to exit the Big 12, the results of the special election in Texas' 6th Congressional District, the National Guard assisting at the border, CRT in the Austin police department, STAAR test results, COVID-19 numbers, and more.
On July 12th, Texas House Democrats boarded two planes headed for Washington DC in a last-ditch effort to deny Republicans the quorum they would need to pass restrictive voting measures during a special legislative session. The Democratic exodus not only stalled the GOP-led election bills, it also delayed Texas Governor Greg Abbott's longer agenda for this special session, including legislation to ban trans youth in sports, further limit access to reproductive healthcare, and dictate how U.S. race history can be taught in school. The Texas Democrats who fled said they aren't returning until the special session expires on August 6, but Governor Greg Abbott said he will continue calling special sessions into next year. Joining us to talk about this legislative stand off is Sarah Labowitz, policy and advocacy director at the ACLU of Texas.
This week, Jim talks with Washington, D.C. based political journalist Jonathan Tilove about his reporting on Texas House Democrats’ strategy in the final weeks of their quorum breaking trip to Washington.

It has been over two weeks since the Texas House Democrats fled their state for Washington, DC to prevent quorum and block Republican voting legislation from being passed into law. They also appealed to Congress to take action protecting voting rights at the federal level. Back home, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has warned he plans to arrest the Democrats who left the state and assured the public he will continue calling special sessions until the voting rights legislation is put to a vote. One of those State Representatives, Democrat Harold Dutton Jr., joins to discuss why he has returned to Texas, the conversations he has had with Republicans about his issues with the legislation and the importance of election integrity and ensuring that voting laws make it easier for Texans to vote. Plus, commentary by Guy Benson, host of the Guy Benson Show.

Apparently, Jen Psaki thinks Americans are not smart enough to catch her flip-flopping on the facts about what she actually says! Last week, she clearly said, "We're flagging problematic posts for Facebook that spread disinformation. We're working with doctors and medical experts…who are popular with their audience with accurate information, … so, we're helping get trusted content out there.” So now she is saying they “have not asked Facebook to block any individual posts”. America's entire electrical grid is in very poor shape. Those massive transmission tower systems are old and are not being rapidly rebuilt (think “infrastructure”). Our systems of electric generation can be both haphazardous and problematic (remember the 2021 Texas Freeze). As of March 18, 2021, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, reports our primary ways of generating electricity are 1.) natural gas - 40%, 2.) nuclear energy - 20%, 3.) coal - 19%, 4.) wind - 8.4%, 5.) hydropower (dams) - 7.3%, 6.) solar - 2.3%, 7.) biomass - 1.4%, and 8.) geothermal - 0.4%. Even so, the Socialist-Democrats, including the Biden Administration, wants to force the automobile industry to only produce products which would have zero emissions output by 2025!Our American Mamas, Teri Netterville and Denise Arthur, do not think it is funny to get sick with the Coronavirus. But they do think there are a lot of very odd things going on with those Texas House Democrats — all to avoid having to vote and lose on some Texas Election Reform Bills! Thus, they fled out of Texas, in mass, on private chartered planes, with at least one case of beer and no masks. What they did is NOT for “the cause of democracy”! It specifically was to block democratic rule in the Texas House of Representatives! In addition, a big question is if they were all vaccinated and none have any symptoms, why were they tested for COVI-19? WOW! So older generations were told to save money for their retirement and senior years, and apparently a lot of them did! The Wall Street Journal reports, “Baby boomers and older Americans have spent decades accumulating an enormous stockpile of money. At the end of this year's first quarter, Americans age 70 and above had a net worth of nearly $35 trillion, according to Federal Reserve data.” Needless to say, the Biden Administration and the Socialist-Democrat Members of Congress want a big chunk of that money for themselves!People are making personal decisions about getting vaccinated based upon “risk/benefit” calculations. In other words, do my age, my health, and the size of my community make me more likely to get COVID-19 or less likely to do so. Older people living in bigger, more densely populated communities are probably going to get vaccinated. Younger people, especially if living in more rural communities are not. Using a pronoun for a person which is not that person's “preferred gender” has been made a violation of law in a number of states, as well as by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights provisions. California had such a provision in its long-term care facility code (HSC § 1439.51). This meant caregivers in long-term care facilities could be fined $1,000 and a year in prison. With a 3-0 ruling, a California Court of Appeal has struck down this pronoun provision saying it violates the 1st Amendment Right of Free Speech because it was restricting speech based upon the content of that speech. This is a very specific ruling on California law, but it is encouraging.

SAN JUAN, Texas - Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa recently spoke at a luncheon hosted by Hidalgo County Tejano Democrats and LUPE Votes. The event was organized to show support for Democrats in the Texas House of Representatives who have broken quorum in the current special session in Austin. Most of the 58 Democrats are now in Washington, D.C., to urge U.S. senators to pass a federal law that would supersede voting restriction legislation Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is trying to get passed at the state level. Hinojosa said the Texas House Democrats were being asked to make a quorum so Texas House Republicans could vote “to pass Jim Crow legislation, to deprive their own constituents of the right to vote.”How can they ask our people to do that, Hinojosa asked. He said that it would be like having one's family lined up to face a firing squad, “and the guys that are going to shoot your family said, can you load up the weapons for us?”The luncheon was held at Azure Bistro in San Juan. Other speakers at the event were Juan Maldonado of Hidalgo County Tejano Democrats and Danny Diaz of LUPE Votes. They said their communities fully support the Texas House Democrats that broke quorum. “We applaud efforts from our delegation to preserve our voting rights and resist Senate Bill 1 and House Bill 15,” Maldonado told the Rio Grande Guardian. The attached podcast features Hinojosa's speech.

There's no end in sight to this political standoff. Texas House Democrats remain in D.C. Austin remains at a standstill. The inevitable is likely only delayed. But is there any room for compromise? Will this legislation change how you vote? And what's up with that case of Miller Lite on the bus with Democrats? Wheeler took off to put his feet in the sand for a few days leaving Whitely on his own to pop the top on a Miller Lite with the youngest member of the Texas legislature, state Rep. James Tallarico. In this episode, state Rep. Craig Goldman, a Fort Worth Republican, also joined Y'all-itics to talk about the lonely days in the legislature and the backchannel conversations that the GOP is having with Democrats in D.C.
On July 12, Texas House Democrats packed their bags and headed for the nation's capital in a high-profile effort to block passage of GOP-backed voting restrictions.Democrats hoped their exodus would break what's called a quorum — the minimum number of lawmakers needed to conduct business — so Republicans couldn't pass legislation that could ban drive-thru and 24-hour voting, among other sweeping restrictions. The move quickly garnered condemnation from Republican officials, who vowed to do what they could to compel Democrats back to Austin. Democrats, meanwhile, hoped to leverage the national attention and advocate for a pair of federal voting bills.Join your host Sean Reynolds, owner of Summit Properties NW and Reynolds & Kline Appraisal as he takes a look at this developing topic.Support the show (https://buymeacoff.ee/seattlepodcast)
