The discussion on this podcast should have been one only of positivity - as Fulham on Saturday were by far the better team against Julen Lopetegui's West Ham, but instead there was an air of frustration after a late lapse in concentration allowed Danny Ings to score a 94th minute equaliser. In this podcast we dissect Joachim Andersen's return, Raul's well-taken goal, Reiss Nelson's debut and of course, the game management that cost Fulham two points. We also look ahead to the Carabao Cup match against Preston North End on Tuesday. -- SHOW-LINKS: If you enjoy Fulhamish, please consider contributing a small amount monthly to help pay our costs. We Are West Ham Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2023 76:33

We all knew David Moyes would start Danny Ings against Burnley despite knowing it should be Divin Mubama who got the nod instead. For the first 85 minutes of the game it was so obvious that the decision was very wrong, and it was underlined, bolded and italicised when Mubama threw himself at a near-post Kudus cross and forced Dara O'Shea to divert the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-1. Soucek's second constructive late winner ensure we came away with all three points. But surely now, it's Mubama who starts games up front while Michail Antonio is sidelined through injury? It has to be the way forward for Moyes' approach. Unfortunately, we can't be so sure. On this week's show, we look back on that win at Burnley, discuss the Betway Charity Bets and then look ahead to Thursday's Europa League clash with Backa Topola and Sunday's Premier League London Derby with Crystal Palace. It is absolutely no surprise that we risk going into the busy festive period without a 'proper' striker. Michail Antonio's injury while on international duty with Jamaica means he could be out for months, leaving just Danny Ings and Divin Mubama as our only recognised strikers in the squad. One barely looks interested when he does get on the pitch, the other is only a teenager and has just 35 minutes of Premier League football to his name. Jarrod Bowen has been utilised there recently but that's not the point. When is the club going to learn that it needs to continue to invest in the striker department until they get it right? Haller and Scamacca didn't work, but doesn't mean they should just give up and just accept Antonio is the only man for the job. He's 33-years-old! We discuss all of that and more on this week's pod before the latest edition of the Claret & Blue, with this week's guest being huge Hammers fan Joe Connell. Newcastle lost in the Carabao Cup Final. But even though Callum is gutted, it feels like the start of something special. What did he make of the game itself? And how good are Manchester United? Both Michail and Callum lost to them this week, it looks like they are back. So what has changed? West Ham got a great result at the weekend against Forest, with new striker Danny Ings getting his first goal(s). Was Michail disappointed to be on the bench after fighting his way back into the side? Across London, Chelsea are struggling. Do the boys think that their manager, Graham Potter, is under pressure? Should he be given more time? They also offer their thoughts on Potter's candid press conference detailing his own mental health struggles. In last week's episode, the boys sang the praises of Liverpool and especially their keeper, Allison. That was before their 5-2 defeat to Madrid and a horror mistake from the Brazilian. So is a rethink in order? And was Callum right to downplay Liverpool's return to form? The boys answer a question about facing abuse from fans in the stadium in Footballers Unfiltered. And we hear a brilliant nomination for the Strikers' Union from a Newcastle (and Callum) superfan. Want to nominate yourself or a friend? Have a question for the boys? Email them at ffp@bbc.co.uk.

It's been a while since we won a football match, let alone one so comfortably. David Moyes returned to a back four against Nottingham Forest, citing the need for more midfielders post-match, and also gifted Danny Ings his first start since signing for the club. The result? A 4-0 thrashing, Ings scoring twice and West Ham looking utterly devastating in the final third. Arguably for the first time this season. It was a must-win game and that's exactly what we got. But is it a sign of what we should expect for the remainder of the season? Also this week, we look ahead to Wednesday's FA Cup 5th Round clash against Man United at Old Trafford, with talkSPORT's Toni Afoke joining us to preview that one. What a Sunday of Premier League football. Aaron Paul is joined by former Southampton defender Francis Benali, Aston Villa defender and Scotland captain Rachel Corsie and Luke Edwards of The Daily Telegraph to go through some huge results at both ends of the table. Newcastle moved into the Champions League places after winning at Tottenham. Hear from Eddie Howe as the panel discuss how several players look reborn under the Newcastle boss. Could Callum Wilson be making a late charge to be on the plane to Qatar? Arsenal dropped points for only the second time this season as Southampton held Mikel Arteta's side at St Mary's. Does that ease the pressure on Ralph Hasenhuttl? At the bottom end of the table, Aston Villa ran rampant with a 4-0 win over Brentford. Three goals in 15minutes was a huge statement after the sacking of Steven Gerrard this week. Brentford meanwhile, were 'shambolic' according to their striker Ivan Toney. The pressure continues to build on Jesse Marsch as Leeds lost 2-3 to Fulham at Elland Road. We ask if the Leeds boss could be the next victim of 'sacking season'. But, one man who looks to have eased the pressure on himself is Brendan Rodgers, winning by four goals at Molineux. However, what next for Wolves? One member of the panel predicts there is no way back for them. TOPICS 1'00 Eddie Howe interview 5'00 Was it a foul? Everton begin the season with consecutive losses for just the 2nd time in the PL era after falling 2-1 away to Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa side. Stateside Toffees who woke up early for this one likely felt a certain amount of regret after an uneventful first half was marked by a Danny Ings goal to put the Villains in the driver's seat. Buendia added another late in the second half which looked to effectively end the match before a Lucas Digne own goal injected some life into the Blues as stoppage time approached, where they nearly grabbed an equalizer. Ryan, Alex and James get into all the details: Doucoure's injury, Coady's first start, Onana's debut, Frank's questionable subs. As always we get some great comments from our listeners that help drive the discussion, including the critical importance of additional business being completed before the transfer window closes. Suj & James welcome Aston Villa correspondent Lee Jackson on to the Podcast discuss hopes for improvements in Steven Gerrard's first full season in charge and the majority of the squad are showing themselves as interesting options for FPL managers with great opening fixtures. Matty Cash v Lucas Digne may be a closer decision than current ownership numbers suggest in the battle between the 5.0 defenders, but their output could be affected by the formation Gerrard selects. It's 4-3-3 or a diamond but it's not clear if there's a favoured set up and the potential impact could affect several players including the popular Phillipe Coutinho (7.0), Leon Bailey (5.0) and Danny Ings (7.0). Plus, an intro to new signings Diego Carlos and Boubacar Kamara, why Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins together doesn't seem to work like it feels like it should, who will have favourtism between Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa and why the exciting Carney Cuckwuemeka may be leaving the club... Is there any reason for FPL managers not to buy Wilfried Zaha? Arguably not, but there are cheaper options that could be considered, they're discussed as are defensive enablers and so to is recently dropped Jean-Philippe Mateta.
