Shipwrecks and the Bounty of the Sea (Oxford University Press, 2022), Dr. David Cressy is a work of social history examining community relationships, law, and seafaring over the long early modern period. It explores the politics of the coastline, the economy of scavenging, and the law of 'wreck of the sea' from the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth I to the end of the reign of George II. England's coastlines were heavily trafficked by naval and commercial shipping, but an unfortunate percentage was cast away or lost. Shipwrecks were disasters for merchants and mariners, but opportunities for shore dwellers. As the proverb said, it was an ill wind that blew nobody any good. Lords of manors, local officials, officers of the Admiralty, and coastal commoners competed for maritime cargoes and the windfall of wreckage, which they regarded as providential godsends or entitlements by right. A varied haul of commodities, wines, furnishings, and bullion came ashore, much of it claimed by the crown. The people engaged in salvaging these wrecks came to be called 'wreckers', and gained a reputation as violent and barbarous plunderers. Close attention to statements of witnesses and reports of survivors shows this image to be largely undeserved. Dramatic evidence from previously unexplored manuscript sources reveals coastal communities in action, collaborating as well as competing, as they harvested the bounty of the sea. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. I'm Lizzy and I'm based 10km south of Cressy in the Northern Midlands of Tasmania. I'm an avid gardener and have begun supplying seasonal homegrown blooms to local florists in recent years. My area of speciality is dahlias. I grow my flowers in our large cottage garden on my parents 770 hectare farm “Little Forest”. The cottage I live in was built by my great grandparents in the early 1900s and i have completely rebuilt the flower garden, large orchard & vegetable garden since moving in back in 2007. This winter I'm increasing my dahlia growing area & moving into the paddock to meet local demand! I'm slowly turning my hobby into a little financial business.
As we wind down from the Wimbledon hype, Dean and I discuss some of the top forehands of the past 23 years and take a bunch of fan mail questions. Shoutout to... my mom.
James Gray, George Bellshaw and Calvin Betton dig into the biggest issues of the week in tennis. 1:35 - Daria Kasatkina reveals she is dating a woman, and her concerns about the taboo over same-sex relationships in Russia. The Russian No 1 also said she wanted "war to end", a significant statement both for its anti-war sentiment and even for defining the invasion of Ukraine as a war, something the Russian regime continues to call a "special military operation". 14:53 - Lleyton Hewitt is inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport, giving an emotional speech in which he said he never expected to be a HoFer, that is was something for his idols. How did the Australian make it so far? And what about that Wimbledon win in 2002? 23:55 - Maxime Cressy wins the title at Newport, serve-and-volleying his way to victory over Alexander Bublik. What is his ceiling? He will now probably be seeded at the US Open, which could make him a tricky early-round opponent for someone. And Calvin's got another theory about the return of S&V in modern tennis... 38:45 - Serena Williams reveals her plans for the summer will take her to Toronto and Washington before New York. How much work does she need to put in to be competitive at the US Open? 45:18 - Inside the secret world of tennis umpires, a Guardian long read. The best and brightest in the Tasmanian Dairy Industry have gathered at Cressy for this year's DairyTas Awards.
Tim Boeseler is a senior editor at Germany's Tennis Magazin, where he has been covering the sport for years. Tim joins me to talk about Michael Stich, the man ranked 123rd on my Tennis 128 list. We discuss the German tennis scene before Stich arrived, how Stich was more than just a serve-and-volleyer, and the nature of his relationship with Boris Becker--not a close one, but one that allowed them to team up to win a gold medal. We also get into the serve and volley and the strategy's best-known current exponent, Maxime Cressy. We talk s-and-v strategy, both for guys like Cressy and for other players who might benefit from mixing it up a little bit more. Finally, we dig into the nuts and bolts of how the German tennis federation works, and how it is changing.
Ohhhhh Jessssieee Pegulaaaaaaaaa.... She made her QF. Who the f*ck is gonna beat Madison Keys? Not Badosa. Krejcikova maybe? Sabalenka to the semi final. Shapovalov looks very good. Don't sleep on Sori Cirstea. Medvedev x Cressy is a science experiment. Line movement, good or bad? Usually good if it's AGAINST you.
We sat down with Laurie LaDow from Cressy and Everett Real Estate. Here's what she had to say...
