On this week's episode, Henry Hill is joined by Patrick van Straaten and Samuel Obaseki to cast their eye over everything transfer-related. They take the top six clubs (plus one - Arsenal or Leicester, take your pick), and bring up a few names each should be looking at. Before that though, they discuss the Kylian Mbappe situation now Real Madrid have finally put a bid in for the PSG man, and whether or not Mino Raiola should be commanding all that money for his client Erling Haaland, who probably doesn't care about any of it. So who should Man City target up front - Lautaro Martinez or Harry Kane (yes we filmed this before his announcement, you don't need to tell us), and should Chelsea prioritise a centre-back in Jules Kounde, or Saul Niguez in midfield? Patrick explains why Rodrigo Bentancur is perfect for Man Utd, whilst Spurs and Leicester lack any decent squad depth - could one of them go for Philippe Coutinho? Then of course, they talk Arsenal, and Patrick is surprisingly optimistic. Maybe it's because he's a new dad. Enjoy!

Wind back to 2018, and Liverpool spent more heavily in the transfer market than they ever had before. Backed in part by the £143m deal that had seen Philippe Coutinho move to Barcelona six months earlier - though £75m of that had already been splashed on Virgil van Dijk - Liverpool then went and signed Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri for a combined total of around £170m. But they could very easily have spent another £52m, having been minutes away from a transfer being announced for French attacking midfielder Nabil Fekir. So, for this special podcast, Matt Addison is joined by Kristian Walsh, who was working on the Liverpool ECHO's sports desk at the time, Spanish football writer Andrew Miller, who specialises in Real Betis, the club that Fekir plays for now, and finally Jonathan Johnson, a French football expert who gives the view from Lyon, as they explain why the deal collapsed, and how that has impacted the player himself and Liverpool since. Certainly, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool could have taken a very different path had they pressed ahead with a move for the number 10...Get exclusive podcasts direct to your inbox every week for FREE by joining the Blood Red Club. Billion pound debt | Messi on a free | Cutting huge Coutinho losses | Gini snub | Pedri future... just what's going at Barcelona?

Blood Red: The Liverpool FC Podcast

There was devastation for Spain last night as they lost an incredible game to Italy on penalties in the first Euro 2020 semi-final. But the performance of Barcelona's brilliant young midfielder Pedri shows that the future is bright for Spanish football. But what about the 18-year-old's club side? You don't need reminding that the last time Liverpool came across Barcelona was back on May 7, 2019 when Jurgen Klopp's team produced one of the greatest comebacks of all time. That 4-0 defeat shook Barca to their core. But as we'll learn on this special podcast, as seismic as that result was, the club's problems had set in long before then, and has certainly accelerated since. Samuel Marsden reports on Barcelona for ESPN and Diario Sport, and Paul Wheelock picked up the phone to him for the first time since before the Miracle of Anfield to find out exactly how bad things have gotten at Camp Nou. Sam talks about Lionel Messi, and whether Barca will be able to sign the world's greatest player to another contract or be forced to let him leave on a free; whether the reports are true that they would really accept a £120m loss on Philippe Coutinho; their decision to sell Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid last summer, and why Gini Wijnaldum didn't become the latest Liverpool player to join Barcelona this summer. And given the stark financial situation at the club, will they be able to keep hold of Pedri, who has been linked with Liverpool. Sam answers that, and gives a great insight into many more subjects we hope you find interesting.Get exclusive podcasts direct to your inbox every week for FREE by joining the Blood Red Club. Rebecca and Alex are back for a Champions League quarter-finals special, after all four games seriously lived up to the hype - with some pretty shocking jokes and (hopefully) some better analysis. In the biggest shock of the round, Manchester City lost to Lyon and while the pundits spent the majority of their time looking at how Man City went wrong, we bring focus to what Lyon did right, their star men, and a nod to the SPFL along the way, before we look at why Pep keeps coming unstuck at the quarter finals stage and those strange tactical decisions. Barcelona were hammered 8-2 by Bayern Munich, with Rebecca risking the wrath of Liverpool Twitter with her opinion on Alphonso Davies, while we praise Thomas Muller again (both for his dad jokes and his on pitch performance), and chat about just where Barcelona go next, with Messi pulling the strings for far too long and a change needed from top to bottom at the club. Atletico Madrid were disappointing in their loss to RB Leipzig and anyone who's listened to the podcast regularly will know our love for Atleti; which is why we're so angry about their performance in this quarter-final. We question why Simeone keeps setting up one of the best teams in Europe to play like underdogs, whether this is the end of the cycle, issues around Joao Felix and Diego Costa, and that phenomenal centre back showing from Dayot Upamecano. PSG broke all our hearts with their late comeback to knock out Atalanta. We praise Atlanta for nearly getting the job done, PSG's injury issues, defend Neymar, and whether PSG can finally go all the way and win the Champions League this season. Plus, one-legged ties, Arturo Vidal's pre-match comments, whether Philippe Coutinho is the worst transfer of all time, midfield seasoning, 'Moosacres', sharing bottles of wine, 'Man in the Mirror', Pinky and the Brain tactics, Argentinian tea, Cafu-like creatures, fluffy handcuffs, and stealthy Noah strikes again. **Please take the time to rate and review us on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts, as it makes it easier for other potential listeners to find us. When Brendan Rodgers took the Celtic job he was advised to jettison Scott Brown. Instead, Brendan invited him to his London home where they chatted about what behaviour he expected from a captain, and also how he could incorporate ‘Broonie' in a different role. Despite the relatively advanced stage in his career, Scott transformed his attitude and style of play, and coach and skipper lifted trophy after trophy in Glasgow. When Brendan took over at Leicester, he again forged a crucial relationship with the incumbent captain, Wes Morgan, and there's great stuff about Leicester and England talents James Maddison and Ben Chilwell. Brendan also reflects on why Philippe Coutinho was adored at Liverpool but failed to hit the ground running at Barcelona. Finally, there's a moving testament on how Brendan considers himself duty-bound to help preserve the legacy and vision of beloved Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who died in such tragic circumstances in 2018. The View from the Kop Liverpool FC fans’ podcast returns as host Paul Wheelock is joined by big Reds Paul Philbin and Kai Delaney. One year on from the Champions League final win in Madrid and trophy parade back in Liverpool, the pod kicks off with the panel’s memories of that magical weekend – as Kai tells a story that not many Reds supporters will top! We then fast-forward to the current day and what Philbo believes is another stroke of genius from Jurgen Klopp, and what the Liverpool boss should do when his side inevitably win the title – perhaps even the first game back against Everton at Goodison Park! Or perhaps not, even, as there is no guarantee that the match will be staged at the home of the Blues, which follows reports suggesting that Liverpool could be prevented from playing their final home games at Anfield. Philbo and Kai give their opinion on that before delivering their verdict on what they feel have been the best matches so far this season. They are then asked about how Klopp and Michael Edwards can go about improving this magnificent team, and whether that should include Philippe Coutinho, before the podcast ends with a tribute to captain Jordan Henderson, nine years after his arrival at Anfield.
