This week's Deeper Roots show takes us through a blend of genres, making a free form journey across the landscape of America's music from the past century. We'll bring you Cannonball Adderley right alongside Hank Thompson and The Neville Brothers, The Doors, Patsy Cline and Mink Deville to start. Dave Stroud's done some scouring through those dusty digital archives for well- (and little-) known gems with stories and ballads. He'll be taking you to where country meets soul, jazz meets boogie woogie and where there's an unlikely fusion of reggae, folk, and zydeco. Topics include wedding days, jiggers of gin, honeydrippers, and the topic of Texas and some big blue diamonds. Tune in this week. Jump blues was the precursor to rock, emerging in post-war America. You can count Chuck Berry and Little Richard among those who were heavily influenced by jump blues. This lively and rhythmically driven music genre is characterized by the fusion of elements from jazz, blues, and rhythm and blues with a nod to big band. Urban migration led to this blending of musical styles and seemed to foster a faster and more electrified sound. Our show today zeroes in on some of the most influential performers in the realm of jump blues including Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, Lucky Millinder, and Jimmy Witherspoon. The incredible Gemma Sugrue joins Alexa this week to take a deep dive into the world of mix voice and belt techniques. We're thrilled to explore this topic with Gemma, especially after our enlightening conversation with John Henney in episode 101. Raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Ian Nelson began his acting career at a young age. He is best known for his screen debut in the blockbuster film THE HUNGER GAMES, his arc on the hit MTV series TEEN WOLF, and his leading turn on Peacock's THERE'S JOHNNY. Over the last 11 years, he has had the privilege of starring alongside actors like ROBERT DOWNEY JR, JENNIFER LOPEZ, BETTE MIDLER, JAMES MARSDEN, and LAVERNE COX to name a few. Together the two began collaborating on what would become Nelson's debut single: “21st Century Love.” Nelson got the idea for the song when he was on a dating app and matched with a beautiful red headed girl, whom he knew nothing about, yet couldn't get out of his mind. Perplexed by how real his attraction felt, Nelson wanted to write a song that explored the changing landscape of loneliness, intimacy, and the desire for connection in our technology-dependent modern age. The music video was shot in April of 2020 at the beginning of the Pandemic, as the deserted streets of Los Angeles provided the ideal setting to express the themes of the song. At the crack of dawn, Nelson and Co-Director, LA celebrity photographer, COLLIN STARK, embarked on a socially distanced shoot to capture the one-take video that also features one of Nelson's passions: tap dancing.
