In their conversation Peter tells us about his new project, a book documenting his and his business partner Brian Ranks collection of vintage Marshall amplifiers titled “Collecting Loud History”. Peter tells us about his early collection and his band in the ‘80's and what Hollywood and the greater LA area were like at that time. Peter tells us about his tv and film career starting on the Young and the Restless, Soap, the Voice and eventually doing a documentary on his friend and teacher Randy Rhodes. Peter tells us about purchasing guitar parts from Grover Jackson and his collection of Charvels as well as his other guitars within his collection. Peter tells us about Randy Rhodes before Ozzy and his tapes of his lessons and note books of Randy's notes to him and describes a bit of the documentary he made of the pre Ozzy relationship between Randy and singer Kevin Dubrow from Quiet Riot. It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. What the Riff?!?
1992 - February: Ozzy Osbourne "No More Tears"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 21, 2024 48:35

No More Tears, the sixth solo studio album by Ozzy Osbourne, was released at an interesting time in rock music.  Hair metal acts were in decline, and grunge was about to take off.  Nevertheless, Ozzy hit it big with this album, reaching number 7 on the Billboard 200 charts, and providing Osbourne's only solo top 40 hit.  No More Tears is generally considered his best album since his first two solo albums, "Blizzard of Oz," and "Diary of a Madman," both of which featured the late Randy Rhodes on guitar.  The songs on the album are largely written by Ozzy, drummer Randy Castillo, and guitarist Zakk Wylde.  Motorhead bassist and front man Lemmy Kilmister wrote the lyrics to four of the tracks on the album.  Additional musicians for this album were Bob Daisley on bass, and John Sinclair on keyboards.  This would be the last Ozzy album to feature Castillo and Daisley. As became more common in the compact disc era of the 90's, the tracks on this album tend to be longer than the typical single.  None of the tracks clock in at less than 4 minutes, and the longest falls just short of 7 1/2 minutes.  In addition to boasting Osbourne's first top 40 hit, he also received a Grammy for "Best Metal Performance" for the track "I Don't Want to Chane the World" when released on his "Live & Loud" album in 1994.Rob brings us this heavy metal throwback for this week's journey back to the 90's.Mama, I'm Coming HomeThis track peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Osbourne's only top 40 solo single.  This power ballad contains lyrics by Lemmy Kilmister, the front man from Motorhead.  The song is about his wife Sharon, who helped turn his life around.DesireA crunchy deep cut talks about going for what you want - not changing over time, seeking the same desire.  Osbourne also makes a reference to "Crazy train," his hit from the early 80's.  "It's the same old desire, nothing's changed, nothing's the same.  Burning like fire, don't you ever take my name in vain."Road to NowhereThe last song on the album is a reflection on life.  Osbourne had gone sober after 20 years of drugs and alcohol, and he looking at how "the road to nowhere leads to me."  "I was looking back on my life and all the things I've done to me." No More TearsThis very dark title track has an epic feel, and despite its length hit number 5 on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, number 71 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 32 on the UK Singles chart.  The lyrics are told from the perspective of a stalker in a red light district seeking a victim to torture.    ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Wayne's World by Aerosmith (from the Saturday Night Live skit “Wayne's World”)This skit finds Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) partying in their basement with the band Aerosmith. STAFF PICKS:Tough It Out by Webb WilderWayne starts out the staff picks with a deep cut.  Webb Wilder was born John Webb McMurry in Mississippi, and carries a high energy combination of rock, psychedelic, blues, and rockabilly genres in this song that encourages the listener to keep fighting for dreams even when the odds seem stacked against their fruition.  Alive by Pearl JamLynch brings us a song which evolved from songwriter and front man Eddie Vedder's original intention.  Vedder reflects on the feelings of a boy discovering that he was a stepchild.  While the lyrics were intended as reflecting the curse of an emotional weight from family history, fans interpreted it as an affirmation of life.I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie RaittBruce takes the energy way down with this soft hit off Raitt's eleventh studio album, "Luck of the Draw."  Bruce Hornsby provides the piano accompaniment.  Nashville writers Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin wrote the song after hearing about a drunk man being sentenced for shooting at his girlfriend's car.  When asked if he had learned anything, he said, "I learned, Your Honor, that you can't make a woman love you if she don't."Anybody Listening? by Queensryche Rob finishes the staff picks with a "prog metal" song off the "Empire" album that questions whether we really are communicating with people, and wondering if we are understood whether by word or deed.  It was an epic with multiple tempos, dynamics, and key changes that finished off the album. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Masquerade by YesWe close out with a surprisingly short song by the prog rock virtuosos off their "Union" album. Sup VoiceHeads! We do a quick case study on the great Van Halen to look at the stellar advantages of matching lead tones!  Even the biggest David Lee Roth fans would admit Sammy Hagar had the superior vocal instrument- so why is the classic Van Halen era so much more iconic and beloved by fans? The easy answer is showmanship of course.  DLR is the split-jumping motor mouth macdaddy who seduced an MTV generation, but there's something more relevant to the music itself.I believe it's because David Lee Roth succeeded in matching Eddie Van Halen's lead guitar tone with his voice.  Almost all the great bands do this.  Joe Perry matching Steven Tyler, Robert Plant matching Jimmy Page, James Brown matching the lead brass, Bon Scott and Brian Johnson matching Angus Young's SG, Raymond Zarick matching Jim Morrison, Steve Vai and Randy Rhodes matching Ozzy Osbourne...It's a delicate art with various hard vocal techniques that we can acquire and master both to imitate the greats, and to create great art of our own!If you've ever wondered what makes the difference between seeing a band with the original line-up, or with changes made to the line-up and whether or not the fans feel like they're getting what they came for, this podcast episode is just for you!www.allvoicemedia.comIf you're interested in training your voice directly with me, check out All Voice Media: Backstage.  Reach out by email direct at ian@allvoicemedia.com

Na edição de hoje do Resumo do Som, nós vamos relembrar como foi que Ozzy Osborne, o guitarrista Randy Rhodes, o baixista e letrista Bob Daisley e o bateria Lee Kerslake criaram o clássico Crazy Train. Of all the impossible obstacles you could voluntarily place in front of you, being a Christian metal band in Nashville has got to be right at the top. Seriously. What's the Christian metal scene in Nashville like? We don't know — but we're betting that Keith Smith's band Oblivion Myth IS the Nashville Christian metal scene. And that's a tall order, man. But Keith has always preferred the road less traveled — and that's why we love him. He's got guts. On this episode we talk to Keith about going to school with Gabe and Scott, balancing his love of secular metal with his faith, the best Randy Rhodes solo, jam spots, Scott Overby, Numbskull and Wrath, Mark Lanegan, and Gabe finally gets one for the Maiden column. “I Haven’t Written My Favorite Song Yet” Mike Viola has written some of my all-time favorite songs. But the Massachusetts-born singer/songwriter tells me in this interview that what keeps pushing him creatively is that he hasn’t written his favorite song yet. Viola's musical career began when he was a teenager, playing in a hard rock band that garnered some pretty serious regional attention, including opening for Todd Rundgren and Joe Perry of Aerosmith. Viola’s solo career started with an EP in 1985 and since then he’s put out nearly 25 albums of some of the most perfect pop music you’ll ever hear. He’s produced for everyone from Ryan Adams to Fall Out Boy, recorded with Shania Twain, The Monkees, Jenny Lewis and Rachel Yamagata and he’s written tracks for and with Matt Nathanson, Mandy Moore, and John Wesley Harding. Along with his buddy Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, Viola wrote and co-produced the Oscar Nominated title track for the 1996 Tom Hanks film That Thing You Do. Viola also wrote must for the film Walk Hard and Get Him To the Greek and he currently is the VP of a and r over at Verve Records. Viola’s new album Godmuffin is a thing of wonder. Filled with songwriting finesse and masterclass pop phrasing, it might very well be his best effort yet. From ruminative tracks like "Ordinary Girl" to the aching grind of “Creeper" to the bluesy pop ripple of "Drug Rug," on Godmuffin Viola has proven once again that he’s a practically peerless songwriter who knows how to land a hook better than anyone I can think of. Godmuffin is the album that we needed in 2020 to remind us that there are still good things in their world. In this conversation, Viola talks about his love of horror movies and monsters, giving up his ticket to see Randy Rhodes, parenting during a pandemic and memories of hanging out in L.A. with Dan Bern.

This week we focus on the Prince of Darkness as we celebrate our Top 5 Ozzy Osbourne Songs 1980-1986! One year after being fired from Black Sabbath in 1979, Ozzy came back with a vengeance with Blizzard of Ozz. The combination of Osbourne's lyrics and the guitar gymnastics of Randy Rhodes took the rock world by storm. Additionally, bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake rounded out an incredible sonic assault that would rattle the early 80's. Top 5 Ozzy   Not only known for great songs, Ozzy's reputation grew by leaps and bounds in the 1980's. The "Satanic Panic" movement was in full swing and Ozzy was at the top of the list. His crazed antics freaked parents out and, in turn, spawned even crazier rumors about the former Sabbath front man. We touch on our memories of Ozzy during this time as well as our first experiences buying his music. Following Blizzard Ozzy releases three other great albums during this period. Diary of a Madman continued the momentum before tragedy struck with the untimely death of Rhodes in a plane crash. Enlisting former Mickey Ratt guitarist Jake E. Lee, Osbourne soldiered on with stellar material on Bark at the Moon and The Ultimate Sin. What are YOUR Top 5 Ozzy Songs from this era? Let us know in the comments and SHARE with a friend! A career side woman who’s also released 7 solo LPs and 2 as band leader of The String Revolution, Janet was also lead guitarist for all-girl band Precious Metal, at 17. Also took guitar lessons from Randy Rhodes for 6 years & talks about the things beyond “guitar” that Randy gave her. She was hand-picked by Lindsey Buckingham to tour with him to support his 1992 solo album, and Lindsey became a mentor to her in many ways over the years (and WAIT till you hear about her audition). Dealing with hard times, a run-in with Donald Trump, her cool guitar collection, why everything is temporary, the upside of turning 50. VERY real, tons of energy and laughter, great convo: Subscribe https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/subscribe/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EveryoneLovesGuitar/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everyonelovesguitar/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ELovesGuitar

Meet Sean Manning; from legendary Rock and Roll band to financial markets “professor.”

How does someone go from the highest levels of Rock and Roll to stock trading success? Come in, meet Sean Manning, world class rock and roll star to stock and commodities educator, and hear the fun. What an amazing man and story. Sean was a onetime lead guitarist for Quiet Riot (yes, that Quiet Riot), the American heavy metal band founded by the great guitarist Randy Rhoads and company; and today a leading educator for stock traders. As a not so side note, Sean, as guitarist for Quiet Riot, had to fill a line of quality shoes, including Randy Rhodes legendary shoes when he took on the positon of guitarist for that band. How good was Sean? Let's chat about Rhodes for a second to get an idea. Rhodes was considered one of the great guitarists of his day. He was so good that when he auditioned for Ozzy Osbourne's band, Osbourne said that he interrupted Rhoads' warm-up for the audition to hire him. This is the legacy that Manning had on his shoulders when stepping in to Quiet Riot's history and legendary guitar shoes. Huge shoes. My first passion is music, rock blues in particular. There's also nothing at all quite like a well written piece of pop. I've always loved music. Sean Manning has done all this. I'm terribly envious! So it's no wonder that one of the greatest days I had - which I'll never forget – was when I met Sean as business colleagues, discovered who he was, was immediately star struck and without hesitation invited myself to a guitar lesson from him. Being the obliging and kind Englishman that he is, he stepped up and I enjoyed a great lesson from a brilliant guitarist that I still remember today. (Hey Sean, how about another one?) Sean is smart, wise beyond his years, a gifted musician and a talented teacher; a man filled with great stories about of some of music's greatest success, and walks among some of the financial world's great success stories too. Today he is the General Manager and Senior Coach of Online Trading Academy Dallas. He's worked with thousands of traders over the past 17 years and managed 18 traders from the CBOT in one of the first mentoring programs for professional traders in areas such as stocks, foreign exchange, options, futures, and now real estate and wealth management. Come in, have fun, it's a good one full of fun….. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-who-are-you-podcast/support
