The arcade was our favorite place to hang out. But there were some games that we blew thousands of quarters on because they were too hard. What do people think were the hardest retro arcade games? We get frustrated until we're broke on Enjoy Stuff. Pass the token 'pon the left hand side! We're gonna need ‘em all with the hardest games in the arcade. Don't get frustrated! Enjoy Stuff.   News In retro news: Garfield phones invade the beaches of France! Star Wars: Andor season 2 premieres this week on Disney+   Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay continues to ride the trail of Western Movies, but adds a little prehistoric this week with his viewing of One Million Years BC. The quality of this Ray Harryhausen movie may not have been at the top of his list, but it was still an interesting idea and had some crazy genre mashups. Shua found some cool YouTube channels that have some great, high quality classic Pink Panther cartoons. It's a great way to have some retro in the background.      Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay gets real with the 2011 Hugh Jackman movie Real Steel. This often overlooked film has a lot of great robot action in the boxing ring, like a mechanical Rocky. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Video Games!  We loved spending time in the arcade as we were growing up. We tried to use our quarters wisely and budget them for the maximum experience possible. But sometimes we had to cram a lot of them into games over and over because they were so hard. Which ones were the most challenging? Were they the same ones you struggled with? Let's see what the internet said and decide if we agree.  What challenging games did we miss? First person that emails me with the subject line, “I need a cheat code” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. “Good luck! You'll need it!” The twin-stick shooter never fully caught on in the arcade's golden age, and yet, some years after the beloved Robotron 2084, Eugene Jarvis and his team returned to that particular mechanical interface wellspring for another go round, with 1990's spiritual successor Smash TV. Leon, Jesse, Michiel and community contributors scream bloody murder at Smash TV's ultraviolent, loud, frenetic, brutal and relentless dystopian 1999 gameshow. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_659.mp3   Music featured in this issue: 1.

Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Finished the game! My guest today is the American video game designer and programmer Eugene Jarvis. Born in California, he studied computer science at Berkeley, where, in the basement of the physics laboratory, he played the early video game Spacewar. After graduating he worked for Hewlitt Packard, but quit after three days to join Atari, where he began programming for some of the first computerised pinball machines. In the late seventies he joined Williams where he and a colleague came up with the idea for a side-scrolling arcade game set on an alien planet. Defender became a hit in the arcades; the game has grossed more than $1.5 billion since 1981. More hitsfollowed: Robotron 2084 –– the first twin-stick shooter -- Smash TV and Cruis'n USA. In 2008, my guest was named DePaul University's first Game Designer in Residence. He remains the only game-maker to have one of his creations featured on a U.S. postage stamp.  Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. Hosted on Acast.

Your Sinclair was one of the "Big 3" Spectrum magazines, alongside CRASH and Sinclair User.  It was considered to be more humourous and zany than its contemporaries.  Its final issue was in September 1993, which was an incredible run, considering the 16-bit computers had taken foothold years prior.  In 1991, they published their top 100 games list, which was compiled by staff writer Stuart Campbell.  It was a comprehensive list of games featuring many classics (and some curveballs).  Join Drisky and Kingy as they go through the games on this list.  With thanks to Gary Arnott for recreating that final cover for our own poster for this episode.  Here are the first 50 games in the first part: 100    Zzoom 99    Maziacs 98    Pheenix 97    Mined Out 96    Cruising on Broadway 95    The Train Game 94    RoboCop 93    Gyron 92    Green Beret 91    Avalon 90    Bounder 89    Cobra 88    Wheelie 87    Codename Mat 86    Trashman 85    Guardian 2: Revenge of the Mutants 84    Technician Ted 83    Football Manager 82    Hyperaction 81    Dark Star 80    Sir Lancelot 79    Atic Atac 78    Flying Shark 77    Gyroscope 76    Three Weeks in Paradise 75    Wriggler 74    Pang 73    Popeye 72    Hijack 71    Frankie Goes to Hollywood 70    G-Force 69    Match Point 68    Tapper 67    The Way of the Exploding Fist 66    Splat 65    Batty 64    Buggy Boy 63    Scrabble 62    Thrust 61    Eric and the Floaters 60    Knot in 3D 59    Hyper Sports 58    Operation Wolf 57    Dun Darach 56    Bounty Bob Strikes Back 55    Saboteur 54    Rastan 53    Ping-Pong 52    Jumping Jack 51    Robotron: 2084   Snow Notes: World of Stuart top 100 reproduction https://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/ys100/ystop100.htm?fbclid=IwAR2J01M29bQutvprNe91s7dmoxSpndRIAyKFS2nw9ozOuHGmR0G0xfvKp3I Kingy's Mined Out remake https://archive.org/details/mined Gyron Arena https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/2193/ZX-Spectrum/Gyron_Arena Joy Chant - The High Kings https://www.amazon.co.uk/High-Kings-Joy-Chant/dp/0553243063 Saturday Superstore - kids playing Speccy games https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9aUgK9rBGI Steven Smith's games (including VR ones) https://stephensmith.itch.io/ First Class TV show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cg-jmty8XuQ Neadeital https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/36565/ZX-Spectrum/Neadeital

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on 1991's Eye of the Beholder, from Westwood Studios and published by Strategic Simulations Inc. We set the game in its time before exploring its primary mechanics and the feel of being in this world. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: First level or two Issues covered: knowing who the evil is, tactical top down Gold Box, the opening cutscene, being amazed at how much they get into the Game Boy version of a Metroid game, lots of movie tie-ins, a wide variety of machines, lack of automap, being everything one wanted for a Forgotten Realms nerd, one of the ten games, semi real-time, living inside the depths of Waterdeep, a style of play which continues today, having to rest immediately, gaining information through audio, uncovering the whole map vs racing towards the goal, tournament play, losing is fun, the only way out is through, annotating a later map, interacting with the play space, accessibility and the mouse, contextualization and abstraction in game design, having to throw weapons in the world, how cool the audio is, using items to locate yourself, creating a party, crunchy spells, shout-outs to upcoming work, difficulty in the bosses in Metroid games then and now, games influencing games, getting the green light, justifying the game via the sweet spot of trends, why not just make this a Star Wars game, how green lighting changes with bigger franchises, games that changed our perspectives. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Gold Box games, Westwood Studios, Dune 2, A Link to the Past, Super Castlevania IV, SNES, Mega Man 4, Final Fantasy IV, Metroid II: Return of Samus (and Metroid series), Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega Genesis, Battletoads, Rare, Stamper Bros, Civilization, Another World, Space Quest IV, Monkey Island 2, Wing Commander 2, Hudson Hawk, Terminator 2, American Gladiators, Hunt for Red October, The Godfather, Amiga, PC-98, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Apple ][, Spectrum ZX, Amstrad, Questron, Disney, Legend of Kyrandia, Command and Conquer (series), Electronic Arts, Earth and Beyond, Louis Castle, Brett Sperry, Strategic Simulations Incorporated, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Pool of Radiance, The Ruins of Myth Drannor, Ultima (series), Wizardry (series), A Bard's Tale (series), Ultima Underworld, Dungeon Master, Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest (series), Diablo, Wasteland, Temple of Elemental Evil, Legend of Grimrock, Etrian Odyssey (series), The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, The Tomb of Horrors, Infocom, Ocarina of Time, Rogue, Deluxe Paint, Baldur's Gate, Jarkko Sivula, Single Malt Apocalypse, Sierra, LucasArts, Wierd Tales, Amazing Stories, Tintin, Pippin Barr, David Wolinsky, Game Thing, The Stuff Games Are Made Of, Walker, Dark Souls, Nintendo, Skyrim, Breath of the Wild, Johnny Pockets, Mad Max, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, Republic Commando, Sam and Max: Freelance Police, Bounty Hunter, RTX Red Rock, Gladius, PlayStation, Tomb Raider (series), Halo: Infinite, Quake, MYST, Lode Runner, Sabotage, Robotron 2084, Joust, Dark Forces, WoW Classic, Everquest, MUD, Ultima Online, Meridian 59, Adventure, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Totally awesome video games! That's what Joysticks promises. Eugene, McDorfus and King Vidiot are running interference while we chew up the scenery of this 1983 T&A buffet. This movie has everything you do AND don't want you in your early 80s celluloid war chest. Scott McGinnis and Corrine Bohrer round out the casting staples of any great, but forgettable 80s flick. Joe Don Baker must have been blackmailed to be in this movie. Come to think of it, he was blackmailed IN this movie as well. Art imitating life...imitating art? Who knows. I'm as lost as that senile wizard wandering around the Gauntlet landscape with this summary anyway. PAC-MAN, Galaga, Defender, Asteroids, Zaxxon, Tempest, Two Tigers, Dragon's Lair, Pole Position, Track & Field, Star Castle, Centipede, Dig Dug, Tron, Missile Command, Donkey Kong, Robotron, Frogger, Burger Time, Rampage, 1942, Berzerk, Q*Bert, Joust, Rolling Thunder, Contra, Double Dragon.....that's enough characters for a great summary, right?

It's a news roundup this week. Fresh off the heels of sending Pinkertons to hassle someone with pre-release Magic cards, Wizards of the Coast is upping the price of their D&D books! Fortunately, though, Kobold Press' "Tales of the Valiant" Kickstarter launched and it's already clocking in at more than $750,000, so you'll have options if you want to play some mainstream TTRPGs even if you bail on D&D. Also, there's going to be a 24-hour ad-supported D&D streaming service; I thought we already had one called Twitch. Also, we talk about Robotron and, bizarrely, Bibleman and his connection to D&D. Finally, from now through June 3, any purchase on our online store will have 30% of its proceeds donated to Richmond Mutual Aid Disaster Relief's free community market.   SIGN UP FOR OUR MONTHLY NEWSLETTER https://goblinsandgrowlers.beehiiv.com/subscribe JOIN 800+ GOBLINS ON OUR DISCORD http://bit.ly/goblindiscord Catch you all next episode! For New Business, the guys go over the games they played over the break - Valfaris, Demon's Tilt, Brain Training, SolSeraph, Robotron 64, Dragon Quest XI, Resident Evil 2 (remake) and more! After a brief Now Playing, the guys tackle the news. With a little bit of quick bites out of the way, the crew goes in deep on the new Nintendo Switch Online trial game coming to NSO members for FREE in Japan and touch on some more details of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan. After JC takes a quick dive through the trash (finding some actual good games for a real bargain!), there was some unfinished business with The Fammies 2019.
