On today's episode, I talk to rappers Brian Warren and Quentin Branch AKA Angry Blackmen. Both living in Chicago in the mid-20-teens, Brian and Quentin met through a mutual friend and eventually a few years later began making music together. Brian asked Quentin to form a duo saying, "I was looking at probably like, OutKast or something, and I was like, 'If they can do it, we can do it'." Their first album TALKSHIT! in 2019 netted them an online following, and subsequent albums were released on Deathbomb Arc. This includes 2020's HEADSHOTS!, 2021's REALITY! and their most recent, the fantastic The Legend of ABM, which was released back in January. My guest this week is New Jersey-based singer, songwriter, and producer Fielded. We spoke about No One Will Save You, Silence of The Lambs, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, the work of Ari Aster and Todd Solondz, why we're attracted to dark and disturbing movies, their journey from a musical family to creating the Fielded project, linking with Backwoodz Studioz, and the creative process behind their latest album Plus One. Reel Notes stands in solidarity with SAG-AFTA as they strike for better working conditions and better pay for the people who power the movies and TV we love. Please consider supporting them directly by donating to the Entertainment Community Fund or The Snacklist mutual aid fund to get food and drink to strikers across Los Angeles. ¡Bah!

George is joined by Brian Miller of Deathbomb Arc, Foot Village, Rose for Bohdan, etc to discuss the only doc he taped off of PBS, Frederick Wiseman's 1968 classic High School.High School took a look at a a month of footage from a Philadelphia high school that was miles removed from the Summer of Love and splays open the ongoing generational conflict between the Greatest Generation and The Boomers, the latter starting to question social values and the former clinging to them for dear life. Grumpire 3, Gravity 0 Welcome to the third episode of Grumpire, the podcast that says you don’t need to bite your tongue while discussing art. Today we invite Brian Miller, founder of the Deathbomb Arc […]
This is how we chill from episode 93 til... Dos Monos are Botsu, Zo Zhit, and Taitan Man. Theyre a Tokyo based hip-hop trio making some of the most interesting music today. Often described as experimental, avant garde, and deconstructionist, their debut album, Dos City, is one of 2019s best projects. It dropped earlier this year on Deathbomb Arc, alongside releases from Death Grips, Clipping, and Jpeg Mafia. @Dos-Monos are gaining a huge foreign following, which is typically very difficult for Japanese rap artists. What's even more wild is that Dos City is the first music they ever made. The first track they made together is on the project. The legendary Meiso, joins us as cohost and we find to find out their origin story, where the inspiration comes from, their musical tastes, their approach to making music, translating the lyrics into English, and a bunch of other suchness. They also share a new unreleased track that should be dropping sometime later this year. Shout out to Dos Monos! Shout out to Meiso! Check out part two that drops next Tuesday with all the other music shares, including a new joint from Meiso and Bugseed. ROCKTOBER continues!George Chen sat down with musician Ed Balloon to discuss the documentary series Hip-Hop Evolution (2016). They discuss Russell Simmons' socks, living in Nigeria, The Get Down, Wild Style, Boston's music scene, and much more. Ed's latest EP Flourish just came out on Deathbomb Arc.While Ed Balloon has never shied away from soul bearing with his streamlined and catchy music, with each new release he brings more socially-focused content to the minimal sound his fans already love. In a unique space between club tracks, love songs, and pop anthems, Ed is able to find the core of a sound, shed the rest, and produce such a focused sound that it is at once huge and cosmic and also as intimate as a cuddle. It is the perfect musical forum for contemplating the ways our world’s huge issues fall right in our laps. Ed Balloon is the best friend we all wish we had; able to tell us those hard truths in a way that is a pure act of love.Hip-Hop Evolution features in-depth, personal interviews with the progenitors of DJing, rapping, and production, culminating in what is now taken to be Hip hop music and rap, adding to the existing understanding of hip-hip's earliest decades. Such original artists, producers, DJs, and promoters include DJ Kool Herc, Coke La Rock, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Fab Five Freddy, Marley Marl, Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Moe Dee, Kurtis Blow, Doug E. Fresh, Whodini, Warp 9, DJ Hollywood, Spoonie Gee, The Sugarhill Gang, and Russell Simmons. Thanks to Jonathan Snipes for lending us mics and letting us record in his kitchen!
