For today's episode, I am joined by Caroline Kingsbury to discuss how art can transform feelings ranging from joy to grief. We also discuss the rich queer history of rock and roll, prioritizing queer joy, and her upcoming tour with Pom Pom Squad. ✨ MORE ABOUT CAROLINE KINGSBURY ✨With a sound that fuses the anthemic spirit of The Killers, the raw vulnerability of Bruce Springsteen, and the theatrical bombast of Kate Bush, Caroline Kingsbury crafts electrifying pop that's nostalgic, refreshingly modern, and unapologetically queer. ✨ KEEP UP TO DATE WITH CAROLINE KINGSBURY ✨Web: https://www.carolinekingsbury.com/Instagram: instagram.com/kingsburyxx/YouTube: youtube.com/channel/UC2nfrwFICTfHpugoytxeyFwTikTok: tiktok.com/@carolinekingsburyxxApple Music: music.apple.com/us/artist/caroline-kingsbury/1113174915Spotify: open.spotify.com/artist/0uE0bzpIfuZ9XVduu0byzg✨ CONNECT WITH IZZY ✨Blog:https://agrrrlstwosoundcents.comYouTube:youtube.com/channel/UCv6SBgiYCpYbx9BOYNefkIgInstagram: instagram.com/agrrrlstwosoundcents/Twitter: twitter.com/grrrlsoundcents

Pom Pom Squad is the band led by singer and guitarist Mia Berrin; their debut album, Death of a Cheerleader, offered a gimlet-eyed, often ironic view of pop culture through a queer lens. Now Pom Pom Squad has released its sophomore LP called Mirror Starts Moving Without Me, full of punk attitude and blazing guitars, but also moments of intense vulnerability and reflection. The band plays in-studio. Set list: 1. Downhill 2. Messages 3. Everybody's Moving On
Mit einer sechsteiligen Video-Serie komplettiert Odd Beholder das tiefschürfend-schöne Album «Feel Better» (2023), inspirirert vom Walliser Fasnachtsbrauchtum der «Tschäggättä». Now, she's returned with Mirror Starts Moving Without Me, a record that dives into the complexities of navigating life after success. In today's episode, we chat with Mia about Mirror, the challenges of writing from a new perspective, and how influences ranging from Leonard Cohen to Sabrina Carpenter shape her music. Caroline Kingsbury and I go far back, almost three years ago now we started to follow each other's careers and I can't express in words how much I gasped waking up one random morning earlier this year, finding out her banger of a song Kissing Someone Else got a lot of attention overnight. Heaven's Just A Flight, her debut album from 2020, helped me through my first heartbreak and that way actually became my most streamed album on Spotify ever with 1,145 scrobbles, according to my last.fm statistics, and it sounds about right. In this episode, we go in depth of the lyrics of the songs off her newly-released EP I Really Don't Care!, as well as her debut album. We discuss the past year that changed her career after almost giving up and how grief is the touchstone in her songwriting and it always is there, even when writing on love.Instagram: @kingsburyxxWatch a clip of this interview here.Go see her live in NYC, Chicago and early next year she's supporting Pom Pom Squad → tickets are available here.“I Really Don't Care!” is out now: get the vinyl here.Bonnie's writing on cowboys and how the past can haunt us is available on thecrylounge.com (her books + zinepaper)

Bartees Strange reflects on important moments during his musical development, including: Learning to sing alongside his opera and gospel singer mother, who brought him to most of her performances as a child, until eventually he was singing alongside her. “There's something magical being a child in an opera Hall, hearing sound without microphones, bouncing off of the wood, bouncing off of the space, and then looking up on stage and seeing like a 5'2” black woman who's your mom just fill it. And it's like, ‘I know not everybody's moms do this.'” Seeing the hardcore band Norma Jean in a church basement when he was in middle school, and realizing that music — especially live music — has the power to make an entire room full of people feel an energetic connection. “I was like, ‘Oh, this is just a music thing. Like, this is just what happens when music works, regardless of a classical space, hardcore space, or like a gospel space, like music can just do this. And I was just like, ‘how do I wield this magical power?'” Moving to New York after a stint working in politics in Washington, D.C., and finding inspiration in the music scene he plugged into there. “I grew up in a very rural area of Oklahoma and dealt with a lot of racism and questions about who I was and who I was allowed to be, and I don't think I was fully comfortable in my body until I moved to New York City and I started meeting all these artists — like are you familiar with the band L'Rain, Taja Cheek's band, and Kia and Melanie Charles? These black artists in Brooklyn who I honestly fell in love with and was so inspired by, because I always felt so alone and singular. My whole life, I was the only black kid. And in my musical space, I was often the only black person. And when I was making records, I was often the only black person in the studio, and people didn't listen to me, they didn't think I knew what I was talking about. I was struggling with even trusting my gut on knowing if I knew what I was talking about. I had listened to the gaslighting so much that I don't think I even knew who I was until I saw those artists and I was able to connect with them on a level where I was like, ‘Oh I'm like you. I'm not weird. Actually this is what *we* do.' And being around them it kind of created the space for me to spread my wings and try some stuff and feel comfortable sharing music with people who understood my experience and where I was coming from, and then once that happened, I was kind of able to lay it all out.” How his goals have evolved between his 2020 debut album, Live Forever, and his recently released sophomore LP, Farm To Table. “Honestly, I wanted to kind of show people it wasn't a fluke, like, I could do it again. And that was also why I put it out so fast. I was like, ‘I'm not letting three years pass before I drop another one. Because I don't want people to think ‘Oh, like, that was cute,' I want them to be like, ‘Oh, Bartees, this dude is a pretty serious cat. He's gonna stick around.'” What he has planned for his first major headlining tour in North America, and why you have to see openers Pom Pom Squad, They Hate Change and Spring Silver. The tour is on the road until 12/19/22. Get tickets HERE.

Pom Pom Squad - Popular (feat. Matthew Caws of Nada Surf) - a 2021 single on City Slang. Back in December, Pom Pom Squad turned a joke tweet into reality when they covered Nada Surf's “Popular” and remade the classic video shot by shot. “I'm gonna recreate the video for “Popular” by Nada Surf but I'm gonna play every character,” Mia Berrin tweeted in March 2021. Nine months later, that dream was realized. It's a fitting tribute for a band that's built their imagery around cheer parody. Their latest album Death of a Cheerleader saw Berrin explore the coming-of-age high school stories that Matthew Caws was subversing on Nada Surf's 1996 hit. There are different implications or meanings, though, hearing some of these lines from the voice of a queer woman of color rather than a straight white man. “Being attractive is the most important thing there is,” goes one the more iconic spoken-word lines from the song. “If you wanna catch the biggest fish in your pond, you have to be as attractive as possible.” For the video, Pom Pom Squad journeyed back to the same high school the original video was shot and enlisted real students to star alongside Berrin, who plays the teacher, football star, coach, and, of course, cheerleader. For an extra boost of authenticity, Caws joins the band on the football field to play guitar and sing backing vocals. Watch the video for “Popular” below and catch Pom Pom Squad at Neumos on Friday, March 11th. For Mia Berrin of Pom Pom Squad, how a song looks is as important as how it sounds. And her latest album Death of a Cheerleader looks and sounds red. Pom Pom Squad's video for “Head Cheerleader” is fantastic. (The song itself is amazing and one of my favorites of 2021.) It's rife with colors, images, and symbols. But what Berrin did with the video is not surprising if you know her background: she first moved to New York to study acting at NYU. And while the video is awash in vivid colors, red stands out. That color played a big part of the songwriting process for Death of a Cheerleader. In fact, she surrounded herself with it during recording, “Lots of red velvet and red vinyl. I had red curtains and wore red gloves,” Berrin says. It was important for her to carve out a physical space during writing that “looked like the internal space of the record. And red is what I wanted the world of the record to look like.”Berrin cites John Waters and David Lynch as influences in the making of her videos, which she says are heavily stylized representations of the world.
This week Oliver looks at two great up and coming indie artists, Pom Pom Squad and KIT.

This week on Coming Out Chats we're joined by musicians Mia Berrin from Pom Pom Squad and Phoenix Arn-Horn from Softcult. In this episode, Mia and Phoenix talk about their experience of homeschooling, who they first came out to, why hardcore scenes thrive in small towns, making connections with other queer people through music, falling in love with your best friend, being mistaken as the "straight best friend" in a gay club, and how everyone has that "one shitty uncle". Pom Pom Squad is more than a punk band. Led by singer and songwriter Mia Berrin, their music is a romp through many musical styles: a seemingly disparate collection of punk and grunge, Motown, crooner jazz, and wall-of-sound 60's pop all built on feelings - heartbreak and injustice and intimacy, and navigating the way through treacherous waters. Their 2021 album Death of a Cheerleader takes a knowing, ironic look at pop culture through a queer lens, focusing on the romance and glamour of 20th century film stars, and the iconic figure of the cheerleader from teen movies past, especially the 1999 film, But I'm a Cheerleader. The full lineup of Pom Pom Squad (Mari Alé Figeman, Bass: Shelby Keller, Drums and Percussion, Alex Mercuri, Lead Guitar, and Mia Berrin) plays remotely. Berrin is working on "re-training the muscle" of playing live shows for when the band is scheduled to go on tour later in the fall. Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer and produced by writer and photographer Laura Studarus. For our fourth season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives. Social media has taught us all to be chameleons of sorts, reflecting and refracting our various influences, but Maia Berrin of Pom Pom Squad reflects on how this can make us more introspective artists and human beings. It can be equally joyous to see ourselves reflected in others as it is painful to see ourselves erased from the media landscape, all of which Mia chats about in our interview and sings about on her new album Death Of A Cheerleader. Ultimately, we are all in charge of our own perceptions but it certainly helps to have guiding lights along the way. Thanks again for listening!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Pom Pom Squad over Zoom video! Pom Pom Squad (the Brooklyn-based four-piece led by the powerhouse Mia Berrin) announces the new album ‘Death Of a Cheerleader’ set to drop June 25th. A sonic collage of deeply personal odes to self-identity, raucous lashings against society’s BS, and snapshots of messy, complicated and fraying love affairs, ‘Death Of a Cheerleader’ will be their first record following their recent signing to City Slang Records. Produced by Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties and co-produced by Berrin herself, it’s a record that plays out like an exorcism in front of your bathroom mirror -- confronting the dark we’ve had planted within us and then ripping it out, all while watching every second of it. Equal parts grimy garage rock authenticity and swirling cinematic flourishes, ‘Death Of a Cheerleader’ explores the terrifying yet liberating topics of independent self-acceptance, smashing the white male patriarchy, being okay with not being okay, and fully embracing your own skin for the first time in your life — in a way, learning to become your own special kind of cheerleader. With Berrin at the creative helm, ‘Death Of a Cheerleader’ is a record for those struggling to find themselves and then shouting from the rooftops when they finally do. Mia Berrin spent her childhood trying to find where she fit right in the world, looking to the pop culture icons on TV in hopes of finding an image she connected to. She connected with the films of John Waters and David Lynch, loved the dark campiness found in Heathers, was in awe of the power of women like Courtney Love and Kathleen Hanna. Growing up as a female of color who would later in her life unearth and embrace her queerness, discussing and reconciling who she is with the perception of who people think she should be, has become a lifelong mission for Mia. But with the COVID pandemic changing the rules of how we all live, followed by the wave of protests against systemic racism and police brutality in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, Mia’s world became more solitary, and she took this time of reflection to pay respect and homage to the people of color who helped lay the groundwork for the musician she is today. The likes of Sade, Billie Holiday, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, all ring a bell. All of these components throughout Mia’s life have bonded together, fortifying a talent that for years has shaken NYC venues, and now is set to shake the world. We want to hear from you! Mia Berrin, frontwoman of Pom Pom Squad, tells the story of a difficult freshman year of high school in Florida. She endured racially-motivated bullying, exclusion and depression, but started to find her own path when she put on pair of Doc Martens and discovered the music of Riot Grrrl bands like Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Hole and Heavens to Betsy. Soon she started writing her own songs and going to shows and even met an important musical partner. Mia gives some advice to her younger self about the importance of practice and patience. The cheerleader: a symbol of power, femininity, even purity should she be coated in porcelain. She’s despised and desired, and according to Mia Berrin, this image colored her formative girlhood experiences as a pillar of something unattainable. Pom Pom Squad became her project: a reimagining of the figure and an ongoing examination of the vulnerability of otherness via race, gender, and queerness. On this episode, Mia checks in with Michael to discuss how her youth paved the road to this project and her upcoming full-length debut Death of a Cheerleader. The pair also discuss the whitewashing of Black music, the power and money behind modern indie aesthetics and how to walk in one’s pain to power something beautiful.

The Subway Emergency Brake Saboteur 72 years ago on May 29, 1947 — United Flight 521 crashes during takeoff from LaGuardia Airport Airbnb and New York City Reach a Truce on Home-Sharing Data The city's number of measles cases have flattened out in data this week showing just 12 new cases since May 20th and 54 new cases in the month of May. This brings the total number of cases observed during the current outbreak to 535 within the city and 940 cases nationwide in 2019. As of May 24, there have been 122 summonses issued to individuals for failing to comply with the city health commissioner's public health emergency plan introduced in April, which required everyone within affected zip codes to show proof of vaccination. Although new cases have been seen in Sunset Park outside the initial Williamsburg cluster, the health commissioner is confident that the high vaccination rates in Sunset Park will prevent the disease from spreading. Measles is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air as sick individuals cough or sneeze. The measles vaccination is included in MMR shots, standing for measles, mumps, and rubella, that contain a specially-weakened form of the virus that trains the body's immune system on how to defend against that virus in the future. For information on where to obtain a measles vaccination, call 311 or view information from the Department of Health at nyc.gov/doh. Mia Berrin -- leader of former Artists of the Month Pom Pom Squad -- joins the Going There podcast to discuss the bias that "mental health" means always feeling and acting happy, calm, and confident. The world would have us believe that being "normal" involves continuous positive and optimistic thinking, and being accepted or popular socially. If we don't behave this way, our mental health and well-being can be questioned. This bias can create a stigma whereby people are unduly judged or criticized. Berrin explains that she took on these societal standards by evoking the image of a cheerleader in her music persona. She discusses how she copes with not living up to societal standards in part by embracing her own "Galaxy Brain." The term can refer to someone who rejects conventional norms and understanding, instead looking at the bigger pictures of issues and digging until they uncover how they really feel and what they want to do. Though the phrase is often meant as an insult -- like someone is making too much of an issue -- the Pom Pom Squad singer talks about how her Galaxy Brain has helped create a pathway to mental health, not an obstacle. After all, we can't cope by invalidating our feelings; we must embrace our Galaxy Mind and accept that our feelings gave value first.
