Emo ambient? That's just one way to describe the ever-evolving work of boundary-pushing artist Mari Maurice, better known as more eaze. Her prolific output defies the norms of the music world, blending ambient, noise, autotune, and pedal steel with a deeply personal, human touch. In this episode, Mari shares her unique approach to making music that dissolves the lines between pop and what's considered, in inverted commas, „serious“ music. Her collaboration with claire rousay on Never Stop Texting Me beautifully exemplifies this artistic ethos. We talk about the challenges Mari faced in Austin's experimental scene and the creative freedom she‘s discovered since relocating to New York. Immersed in the city‘s rich musical landscape, she's embraced collaboration and opened up new dimensions in her sound, drawing from both minimalist and maximalist influences to reshape her approach to composition.Mari also reflects on the joy of making experimental music more accessible, sharing how a live performance sparked her own musical journey and shaped her ethos as an artist. Along the way, we explore the serendipitous nature of sound creation and the growing acceptance of pop elements in avant-garde music. If you're enjoying the show, please consider subscribing and leaving a rating or review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen. New York City-based underground hip-hop artist Billy Woods might be best known as half of duo Armand Hammer, but is also well known as a solo artist. His 2024 releaseMaps, in which he worked with beatmaker and producer Kenny Segal, earned a “Best New Music” designation from Pitchfork. On this episode, in which Woods was interviewed before a live audience by guest host and former guest of the show Claire Rousay at the 2024 Big Ears Festival, he talks about how songs by Public Enemy, MF Doom, and Juggaknotts paved his way artistically.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
San Francisco-based Irish musician Shane Culloty aka Winter Aid released his second album under the moniker, titled Pull the Sky Inside, on May 17. He talks through all 15 songs on the record on this episode of the TPOE podcast. -- The 15-song collection, produced with Larry Crane (Elliott Smith, The Decemberists) and Chuck Johnson (Daniel Bachman, Claire Rousay), finds Culloty stretching the extremities as to what is sonically expected from a collection of Winter Aid songs, weaving in electronic sonic strands and new percussive elements. Having uprooted from Dublin to San Francisco with his wife, assimilating to life in a new city and country shortly led into the pandemic and lockdown. The songs that came out of this gestation period finds Culloty fully exploring his new surroundings. It's an urban pastoral record, full of flickering images, still lifes from once bustling streets, and a world suddenly torn in different directions. Upheaval, inequality, fear and uncertainty, all captured within the beauty of life, love and a fragile environment in need of nurture. The title track, 'Pull The Sky Inside', was written in the midst of the pandemic, a period of struggle in a new city, far away from family. “I would spend a lot of time watching the sun go down over San Francisco,” notes Culloty. "I was struck by the idea of pulling the sunset sky indoors to preserve it and fall asleep in it. It seemed like a good solution to the darkness I was experiencing and once I finally recorded the line and finished the song, things felt a lot easier.” Ultimately Pull The Sky Inside captures that sense of displacement: feeling a bit unmoored and out of place, but constantly trying to explore new scenery. It's a record with one foot in Culloty's home back in Ireland, while very much a reflection of his new surroundings, attempting to make sense of everything going on around him. -- Buy Pull the Sky Inside on Bandcamp: https://winteraid.bandcamp.com/album/pull-the-sky-inside

This week's Talkhouse Podcast came together in a fun way, when a new-ish artist referenced the work of a more established band in a song, and the head of a legendary indie label thought they should meet. That sounds complicated, but don't worry I'll explain. Our guests are Claire Rousay and Kevin Drew. Kevin Drew is best known as one of the founders of Broken Social Scene, the influential Canadian band slash collective that's been around for 25 years now. The band has amassed an incredible catalog that broke out with 2002's unstoppable You Forgot It In People but all of its records reward a deep dive—as does the solo work that Drew has also released over the years. Last year he released a moving record about loss—among other things—called Aging, and as you'll hear in this conversation, he hopes to reignite Broken Social Scene for one more run that includes some of the collective's members that have gone on to big careers outside the band, like Leslie Feist and Emily Haines. I personally would love to see it. I imagine the other half of today's conversation, Claire Rousay, would as well. The impetus for this conversation is her song “Lover's Spit Plays in the Background.” In case you're not familiar with the aforementioned Broken Social Scene album, You Forgot It In People, it features a song called “Lover's Spit.” Rousay's song is from her fantastic new album Sentiment, just out on Thrill Jockey Records, on which she leans more into song structure than on past releases, which have been tagged “emo ambient.” Rousay uses found sounds, hazy atmospherics, and Auto-Tune to tell sometimes crushingly depressing stories in a way that somehow turns out gorgeous. Check out “Lover's Spit Plays in the Background” right here. This conversation ended up happening because Thrill Jockey's Bettina Richards reached out to Drew to let him know about the nod on Rousay's song, and the rest is history: As you'll hear, they connected pretty quickly, and they chat about blackout curtains, influential record labels, the death of Kevin's mom, and what Drew dubs Claire's “beautiful, vulnerable, shadowy womb/sleeping bag of a record.” Enjoy. 0:00 - Intro 2:29 - Start of the chat 4:49 - On Claire's unusual introduction to Broken Social Scene's music 9:24 - On music as a lifesaver 13:47 - On the future of Broken Social Scene 17:35 - On being jealous of your peers 21:42 - On blackout curtains 31:27 - On signing to Thrill Jockey 36:46 - On negativity and career expectations Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Claire Rousay and Kevin Drew for chatting. No Tags is going weekly!Since launching last year we've managed to stick to an episode every fortnight, but the time feels right to try and make things more frequent. So in that spirit, we're going to be recording more regular Tom-and-Chal-only episodes. Anything you particularly want us to tackle in these? Email, comment or DM us.This week: we tackle Cindy Lee's Diamond Jubilee and the revelation that Pitchfork isn't only still going, is still able to break albums! Is it the best long-player since Fetch the Bolt Cutters, or is its success simply nostalgia for the last embers of the pre-streaming age?We bed-rot with claire rousay and her new album sentiment, perhaps the most 2024 album of 2024 so far. It all boils down to porn bots and the numb, over-scrolled horniness of existing online in 2024.There's also thoughts on Coachella, the haunted nostalgia of the modern-day festival circuit, and why there might be more DJ sets like that Grimes disaster-class to come. In this chat, we get to meet claire rousay. claire is best known as an ambient composer, crafting soundscapes with keys, found sounds, drone, and other experimental elements. But in this chat, she and I talk quite a bit about her brand new album sentiment, which is out now on Thrill Jockey, which includes much more singer-songwriter style material. Now, it's still a claire rousay record, and we discuss how she tried to keep a hold on her experimental spirit despite having more lyric- and guitar-focused songs than ever before, including her choice to produce all the vocals on the album with a sort of robotic autotune effect. We also talk about inspirations, how emo and folk music impacted her as a music listener and creator, live performance, and more. It's a very candid, down to earth, and occasionally lovably self-deprecating chat with one of our most intriguing voices in current-day experiment pop music, and I think you'll enjoy. Thanks for listening.
For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite claire rousay on the show! When I was developing this show last year, claire was one of the people I knew I wanted to have as a guest. With her excellent new album, “sentiment,” out on April 19 via Thrill Jockey, it was the perfect opportunity to bring her on the show. We talk about her connection with more eaze, what DJ Khaled's life must be like, the all-time greatness of Prince's “Dirty Mind,” Kath Bloom and Loren Connors making magic, the most cringe Myspace music there is, learning to love Elliot Smith, Mark Kozelek, how Young Thug is the greatest artist of the last 20 years, and so much more!Listen to all of claire's picks HEREclaire rousay “sentiment”claire's tour datesSongs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark. It's our yearly tradition here at Queen Venerator as we're counting down our Top 100 Albums of 2022. To say that this was a good year in music would be a massive understatement. This was one of the best years in music in recent memory. A lot of great albums didn't make the cut, which is kind of insane considering there are 100 albums listed here. And what a 100 they are. Dance bangers from across Africa, ambient bedroom projects, a ton of hip-hop, wild free jazz, midi-infused pipe organs, fiery hardcore punk, modular synths for days, ear-shattering electronics, the smoothest desert blues, a guy rummaging around in a box for an hour, and so much more. Enjoy! We had the pleasure of interviewing EDEN over Zoom video!Singer, songwriter, and producer, EDEN shares his latest full-length album ICYMI. The project is a sonic odyssey through loss and life, dovetailed by EDEN's effortless welding of genres between electronic, R&B, and something else entirely his own. ICYMI deftly weaves between euphoric dance beats, ambient field recordings, and an unshakeable sense of urgency as EDEN catapults towards catharsis.ICYMI is experimental in both its sound and its creation, and EDEN's acute conceptual grasp on the project is evident. Over the 11-tracks, EDEN flexes masterful production and intimate songwriting with both echoing synths and thought-provoking lyrics that echo long after listening. ICYMI is EDEN's first full-length release since his most recent album, no future (2020). After clocking in at No. 26 on the US Billboard charts with no future, EDEN returns with the eagerly-awaited and highly-ambitious ICYMI. He has released 4 EP's along with debut album vertigo (2018) which peaked at No. 34 on the US Billboard charts. A producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, EDEN (real name Jonathon Ng) is a musical tour de force. Most of the Dublin-based artist's work is self-produced and recorded in his London at-home studio. ICYMI boasts that all songs were “written, recorded, performed, and produced by Jonathon Ng in Dublin, London, Miami, Cancun, and Los Angeles,” with the exception of a few instrumental/vocal contributions. EDEN has been sampled by Meek Mill, and has released projects with rappers Vic Mensa and ATO, and producers Kai Whiston and Ryan Hemsworth. An innovative and well-respected influence across genres, EDEN has been cited as an influence to emerging hyperpop artists Ericdoa and Underscores as well as producer Claire Rousay. We want to hear from you! Claire Rousay's music combines field recordings, Auto-Tuned vocals, conventional instruments, spoken word, and other elements with a subtlety that both attracts and subverts terms like "ambient" and "sound art." In this episode, she discusses how tracks by Ryu Hankil, Elliott Smith, and K. Mulhern shaped her work. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZz...
