VP of Marketing Steven Clarke Joins QSR editorial director Danny Klein to discuss the 35th anniversary of Golden Krust, a brand that remains to this day a family-run operation that started from a single location in the Bronx, New York, before expanding nationwide. After immigrating to New York from Jamaica in the 1980s, Lowell F. Hawthorne and his 10 siblings founded Golden Krust in 1989. Clarke is carrying on that legacy, looking ahead to growth, and balancing modernizing the brand while also paying tribute to what's made it such an icon since day one.

With an indelible legacy as a key figurehead in the Bristol sound, he has never compromised since emerging in 1989 as a member of Fresh 4. As a founding member of Full Cycle, the first non-London label to truly mould and manipulate the jungle schematic, and Reprazents, one of the first D&B acts to infiltrate the popular psyche and win critical Mercury Music Prize acclaim, his designs continue to help shape our understanding of what drum & bass is.He is regarded as one of drum & bass and jungle's founders and pioneers noted for his unique musical style. Epic experimentalism of Krust's can be heard in his 1997 single ‘Soul In Motion' and similarly ground-breaking ‘98 single ‘True Stories' for Talkin Loud. An in-demand remixer, Krust has reworked tracks for Bjork, Korn, Moloko, Claude VonStroke, DJ Krush, Adam F, Shy FX, Alex Reece, DJ Ron, DJ Rap and many more. His recent album entitled Edge of Everything was released in 2020 on Crosstown Rebels and received critical acclaim. It was nominated for a album of the year with AIM Award and DjMag.In addition to making music Krust has helmed Adapt The Canvas, a lifestyle coaching consultancy that holds workshops and seminars giving advice on time management, overcoming personal challenges, creative thinking, wellness and the development of the working mindsets, which have taken place in music colleges, universities and The Barbican, London. D:U:LIVE is coming in June! My first live set since 2013.... London / Bristol / Manchester - all tickets: scubaoficial.io/liveWe haven't covered Drum n Bass anywhere near as much as I'd like. dBridge was an early guest, and we've also had Fracture, Chris from Hospital, and Krust. So that's not even 5% of the episodes so far, and DnB really is a fascinating topic.Doc Scott was there from the very start. A teenage attendee of acid house raves like Sunrise, he was on the dancefloor at Rage, and a regular on the decks at one of the most legendary club nights of all time of any genre - Metalheadz at the Blue Note.An important producer in the 90s, including the all-timer Shadow Boxing, he hasn't released a tune in over 20 years, but still runs his label 31 Recordings and DJs all over the world. We talk about the history of the scene, those acid house raves, the detailed story of the Rage - Jungle Fever - Speed - Metalheadz progression. And we get deep into the DnB scene today, which he regards as being as good as ever. This is a great conversation, and hopefully the first of more DnB coverage coming up!If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! There are two tiers - "Solidarity" for $4 a month, which features the show without ads, regular bonus podcasts, and extra content. And "Musicality" which for a mere $10 a month gets you all the music we release on Hotflush and affiliate labels AND other music too, some of which never comes out anywhere else. You can also make a one-off donation to the podcast using a card, with Paypal, or your Ethereum wallet!

A quick thank you to everyone listening in the UK... we made it into the top 10 music podcasts for the first time last week! Non-UK listeners: tell your friends so we can get up those international charts too! What is creativity? Why do we value it so much as a society? And how do you unlock it? These were not questions I was anticipating a deep dive on when I started researching this episode. As a long-time Krust fan, I was looking forward to talking about early Jungle and the Bristol DnB scene. And we do that in this episode, but quite a lot more as well. After going on a multi-year hiatus in the early 2010s, he launched a coaching and consultancy business called Adapt The Canvas through which he works with a wide range of people to help unlock their creativity. So we discuss all of that, as well as his own creative process, his last album The Edge Of Everything (which was released on previous NDP guest Damian Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels), the experience of touring himself into the ground with Reprazent, and the development of Jungle and DnB. This is a good one, a worthy follow-up to last week's episode which was the most popular we've ever done!If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! On this week's episode, we see Krusty's decline from hilarity into obscurity, and his eventual triumphant return into a Bill Hicks type character. This is also the Canyonero episode, which is arguably the best Simpsons song of all time (in Andy's very isolated opinion). Anyway, enjoy!!

Nothing's changed in fifty episodes, as we have plenty of giggles, music chit-chat, navigate dodgy internet connection and deal with a leaking roof...In this episode, we put our usual programming on hold to get rather sentimental and nostalgic about running this humble DIY podcast for just over two years and fifty episodes! We begin by discussing some of our favourite moments as a podcast and our hopes for the future, before getting stuck into Awake All Hours' Greatest Hits - starting with some honourable mentions before each highlighting five of our favourite ever releases covered on the show, featuring aya, Lyra Pramuk, Manni Dee, Wordcolour, Krust and many more!As always, a HUGE thank you to everyone who has listened and contributed to Awake All Hours in any way.
