The phrase "Nobody is coming to save you" has become a powerful mantra in various contexts, emphasizing personal responsibility, resilience, and the need for self-reliance. Here's a detailed exploration of its implications and interpretations:Personal Responsibility and Self-Reliance Empowerment Through Responsibility: The idea that "nobody is coming to save you" underscores the importance of taking responsibility for one's own life. It suggests that waiting for external intervention or rescue is futile, and instead, individuals must actively engage in their own salvation or improvement. This concept is echoed in various self-help and motivational literature, where the emphasis is on personal growth through self-action 91015. Overcoming Trauma and Grief: In the context of the film "No One Will Save You," this phrase takes on a deeper meaning. The protagonist, Brynn, must confront her past trauma and grief alone, symbolizing that healing and forgiveness often require internal work rather than external validation or rescue 37. A Shift in Narrative: Traditionally, stories often revolved around a hero or savior figure. However, modern narratives, like those in "No One Will Save You," reflect a shift towards stories where characters must save themselves, highlighting a cultural move towards individualism and self-empowerment 23. Critique of Dependency: The phrase also critiques the societal expectation or desire for someone else to solve our problems. It challenges the notion of dependency on external figures or systems for salvation, whether in personal life, career, or societal issues 412. Facing Reality: Accepting that no one is coming to save you can be a harsh but necessary realization for personal growth. It forces individuals to face their realities, make decisions, and take actions that might be uncomfortable but are essential for progress 116. Therapeutic Implications: In therapy and personal development, this concept can be liberating. It encourages individuals to seek internal resources for coping with anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues, rather than relying solely on external support 4. Existentialism: This phrase resonates with existentialist thought, where individuals are seen as free agents responsible for giving meaning to their lives through their actions. It aligns with the idea that life's meaning is not given but created through personal endeavor 13. The Journey of Self-Discovery: The realization that one must save oneself can lead to a journey of self-discovery, where individuals explore their capabilities, desires, and the essence of their existence 17. Cultural and Societal ReflectionsPsychological and Emotional GrowthPhilosophical and Existential PerspectivesConclusionThe phrase "Nobody is coming to save you" serves as a stark reminder of the necessity for self-reliance and personal responsibility. It's not just about facing life's challenges alone but about recognizing the power within oneself to overcome them. This concept, while initially daunting, can lead to profound personal growth, resilience, and a deeper understanding of one's own strength and potential. Whether in literature, film, or personal life, this mantra encourages a shift from passive waiting to active engagement with one's own destiny.

This week, look, we know you don't care, but we didn't kill our wife, okay?? We're heading out on the run with a hairy Harrison in search of the one-armed man, as we have a hell of a time with one the great dad thrillers of the 90s. It's 1993's The Fugitive, directed by Andrew Davis, and starring Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones, Sela Ward, Joe Pantoliano, Jeroen Krabbé, Daniel Roebuck, L. Scott Caldwell, Tom Wood, Andreas Katsulas, Julianne Moore and Jane Lynch. Both a perpetual chase action movie as well as a taut conspiracy thriller, the movie is boosted enormously by a lineup of U.S. Marshals in dogged pursuit of our hero that all get to be funny and likeable without ever really feeling like the villains -- such a likeable bunch in fact that they'd all come back for a Ford-less sequel in 1998, four years after Tommy Lee Jones won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Plus: Hayley's hooked on puzzles, and Justin's landed square in the middle of a red hot pro wrestling feud! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our conversation, The Fugitive is currently streaming on Crave and Starz in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Love Guru, Monday Night Raw, The Bikeriders, Azrael: Angel of Death, No One Will Save You, Mission: Impossible, Mission: Impossible 2, The Town, Lost, The Late Shift, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lupin the Third, John Wick, Air Force One, The Departed, The Sixth Sense, Emilia Perez, The Incredible Hulk, The Living Daylights, Soldier of Orange, The Fourth Man, Minority Report, Die Hard, U.S. Marshals, The Matrix, The Simpsons, and Wrongfully Accused, among others. We'll be back next week as we continue to barrel toward January's canon consideration of Ocean's Eleven (2001) at the end of the month, and having already checked in with Bernie Mac to kick off the new year, it's time to recruit the leader of the gang in one of his first leading man movie star roles, the very first film ever released by DreamWorks Pictures: 1997's The Peacemaker, with George Clooney and Nicole Kidman which is sadly not available to stream north of the border currently but can be rented on Cineplex and YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Hello, and welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I'm chatting with Ramsey Avery, the Production Designer behind Disney & Hulu's sci-fi horror film 'No One Will Save You'. Written and directed by Brian Duffield, ‘No One Will Save You' follows Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever), an exiled anxiety-ridden homebody, who must battle an alien that found its way into her home. What makes the movie particularly unique is that it features only 5 words of dialogue in the entire movie. This made Ramsey's job an interesting challenge as he needed to help showcase all of the unspoken storytelling through his production design. It meant that his sets and designs had to be intricately planned and executed to make up for lack of words and to use the world around the main character to explain everything from who Brynn is and her backstory to the reasoning behind her choices and her relationships with other people in town with whom she only has a single non-verbal interaction. It's a fantastic little film, and if you're in the UK you can watch it right now on Disney+, or in the USA you can find it on Hulu.In the interview, we not only discuss Ramsey's work on ‘No One Will Save You', but also his impressive back catalogue of projects including ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power', ‘Minority Report', ‘Star Trek Into Darkness', and ‘Team America: World Police'. He's also worked on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2', ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming' and the upcoming ‘Captain America: Brave New World'. Plus, he has designed various theme park attractions, including the Avengers Campus at Disney's California Adventure. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Hosted on Acast. Brian Duffield is one of the most original writer-directors in genre cinema right now – a spec script maestro whose films are homages to the popcorn thrill rides he grew up on, without being nostalgic replays of those ‘90s classics. Instead, his movie's always offer something new. Take Spontaneous, for example – his brilliant coming-of-age directorial debut romcom, set in a high school in which students are spontaneously combusting. Or even more pertinently, one of last year's most thrilling horrors: No One Will Save You, Brian's tale of a young woman with a chequered past, whose solitary life is interrupted by an alien invasion. The film plays out almost entirely without dialogue. We had the pleasure of chatting with Brian about who Brynn was to him, the idea of this story being about alienation in more ways than one, and exactly what is happening as the film reaches its ending – a moment that had the internet rife with theories as to exactly what goes down as Brynn's fight to survive takes on a dreamy, seemingly utopian turn. Joined by Quarterly King Ian Olson, this is one of our more heavily debated films, as opinions widely vary between the three of us on what this film is trying to say and whether or not it succeeds at what it's aiming for. It's perhaps a bit unfair to compare the new NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU to UNDER THE SKIN, a film widely considered (by us) to be one of the best science-fiction films of the last 20 years, but at least one of our co-hosts was taken by Brian Duffield's virtually dialogue-free story of a solitary woman fending off extraterrestrials. In the first half of this week's episode, they get into it with the rest of our panel — joined once again by comedian Joe Kwaczala (“Funny Songs and Sketches”) — over the film and whether its divisive ending is a subversively dark conclusion or an arbitrary attempt to be shocking. Then we bring UNDER THE SKIN back in to compare how these two films fill the space between their minimal dialogue and the degree to which they let us into the headspace of two alienated women with opposing yet complementary motivations. The new NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU follows a lonely, socially isolated woman through an alien invasion, a narrative it shares with UNDER THE SKIN, though in Jonathan Glazer's 2013 instant classic, said woman also happens to be the invading alien. Both protagonists are enigmatic in their own way, and the films around them follow suit, with heightened tones and minimal dialogue providing two distinct takes on human nature through alien eyes. This week we plunge into the eerie depths of UNDER THE SKIN with the help of comedian and film fan Joe Kwaczala (@joekjoek), to talk through the dynamic of of Scarlett Johansson's central performance against the array of non-actors embodying her victims, the subtle shifts in power that take place between them, and the enduring horror of that beach sequence. And in lieu of Feedback this week, we consider some of the other films that join UNDER THE SKIN in contention for the title of greatest science-fiction film of the 21st century.
