I've known my next podcast guest, Debbie Bliss, for many years. We met last century when I was a fashion assistant stepping in for the fashion editor to style one of Debbie's knitting pattern books. The most published knitwear designer in the world has over 35 books, 20 booklets, her own range of yarns and her own knitting magazine. If you want to know anything about knitting, Debbie Bliss is your woman. After working together, we initially kept in touch but living at opposite ends of the Victoria Line came between us, so I am thrilled to have made contact with her again. She cares deeply about democratic design, carefully develops collections to complement the qualities of each yarn - and is very, very funny. In this That's Not My Age podcast episode, Debbie talks movingly about having breast cancer, which has seen her undergo a mastectomy, lymph node removal and over six months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. 'Anyone who has ever had cancer will understand, you're never quite removed from the fear that it will come back, and you'll have to go through it all again,' she says. 'People tell people who have been diagnosed to be positive; but I think that bring realistic works better for me.'PODCAST CREDITSProducer and audio engineer: Linda Ara-TebaldiHost: Alyson WalshGuest: Patrick GrantMusic: David SchweitzerArtwork: Ayumi TakahashiDigital technician: Tom Hole at StirtingaleCoordinator: Helen Johnson
Debbie Bliss has spent over 30 years building an international yarn and design brand. She is recognised for her classic and contemporary designs and use of bold and beautiful colour palettes. She is also the most published knitwear designer, with over 35 books, 20 booklets and her own magazine and was recently awarded with an MBE in the Queen’s 2015 Birthday Honours List for her services to hand knitting and the craft industry.

Brooke Nico is the co-owner of Kirkwood Knittery, where she uses her eye for detail and fashion experience to keep her store ahead of trends in knitting. However, lace is where Brooke has really made her mark, and her talent has been recognized by Vogue Knitting, Knitters, and Debbie Bliss magazine. She has taught lace classes at VKLive, VKLive LA, and several Stitches (XRX) events. Brooke lives in Kirkwood, MO. I think you have to keep the big picture in mind, so over the course of a year, I have a work/life balance. Today, I may feel guilty because I'm missing a soccer game. But next week I'll make the soccer game and have something else to do. I can't take each day as a snapshot. I have to look at the whole picture. Episode Highlights: 03:50 Brooke and Kara discuss how they met. 05:00 Kara digs into Brooke's extensive knitting background. 06:40 Brooke talks about purchasing Knitting for Dummies as her intro to knitting. 08:45 Kara asks if Brooke took to knitting right away or if she was frustrated at first. 09:30 Brooke says to "Pick something that you will love" as a project. 11:16 Why lace? Does Brooke find it similar to Cablework? 12:30 What advice Brooke gives to intimidated newbies. 15:10 Designing and authoring books vs. opening Kirkwood Knittery. 17:30 Brooke's work/life balance mindset. 19:20 How knitting "chose" Brooke. 22:00 What advice would Brooke give her future self? 24:47 Is Brooke afraid of losing her passion for knitting? 26:35 What's the best piece of advice she's ever been given? Follow us @Purlescence on Twitter! Events: (00:31) - New York Sheep and Wool Festival (Rhinebeck): Oct 17-18. Meetup TBD. On the Needles: (2:41) Jasmin's Tangled Yoke Cardigan is nearly finished. Gigi is working on her Origami Wrap Pullover. Jasmin talks about buttonbands, and picking up three stitches for every four rows when picking up stitches for a buttonband. Gigi is working on a few pairs of vanilla socks, out of Regia Galaxy. Jasmin is knitting a pair of socks for Andrew out of her Crown Mountain "Albatross" handspun. Gigi is working on a crocheted edging for pillowcases. Jasmin talks about the yarn swap at Purlescence, where she came away with a skein of sock yarn, and a sweater's worth of Brown Sheep NatureSpun (in Cranberry Fog). Contest: (25:44) Post your contest ideas in our Ravelry group! Mother Knows Best: (28:08) We discuss "breakout projects". Jasmin's favorite "learning" baby sweater is the cardigan from Debbie Bliss's "Quick Baby Knits". We also recommend the Print of the Wave Stole (errata for the edging here), the Twist Cardigan, and the Lady Eleanor Stole. When Knitting Attacks: (35:54) Gigi has been foiled by not being able to find the issue of Interweave Knits with the Frost Flowers Stole (by Charlene Schurch). Jasmin's enthusiasm causes trouble, again, with her Tangled Yoke Cardigan. Gigi's Swallowtail Shawl hits some snags. We talk about lifelines. Gigi's Scandanavian Socks continue to be troubled. Straw into Gold: (51:15) Jasmin spins a little more of Duchess (to become the Carnaby Street Pullover). She has also been spinning some of the Crown Mountain Superwash in "Hey Jude". Jasmin experiments with dyeing pindrafted roving in the coil.
