This episode offers an awesome lens into a really unique corner of the human performance world: NASCAR pit crews. These teams perform physically and cognitively demanding tasks under highly stressful conditions where speed and teamwork are both vital. Our guests are not only accomplished pit crew athletes in their own right, but also coaches who have led teams to achieve at the highest levels. Shaun Peet and Mike Metcalf are the co-founders DECK Leadership and co-authors of 12 Second Culture. They are working to transforming the modern workplace by uncovering opportunities for Diversity, Efficiency, Culture, and Kindness rooted in the principles of a pit crew experience. Together they have over 25 years of experience in NASCAR and have worked with many Fortune 500 companies. They are Co-Head Pit Crew Coaches and Directors of Culture and Community at Trackhouse Racing. Shaun played hockey in the Ivy League at Dartmouth College, where he picked up a double major in Psychology and Sociology. He then played eight years in the minor leagues. A chance meeting with a fan then afforded him an opportunity to work in NASCAR as a Jackman on a pit crew for the next 12 years where he was a part of the Red Bull Racing Crew that won the 2008 World Pit Crew Championships. Mike was a fullback for Appalachian State University football and then entered the world of motorsports in 2006 as a member of a NASCAR Pit Crew. In addition to competing he started coaching in 2012. He's also very engaged with several volunteering efforts in his community. Tune in to find out what principles they use to build elite pit crew teams, and how this episode only came to be thanks to chance meeting following a car wreck in a tiny French village. There's lots to celebrate, and also a lot to hold each other accountable for in today's workforce. You may have remember seeing a lot of organizations make public pledges, commitments and investments to diversity, equity and inclusion programs in 2020. While the intention to diversify work may be good, the real question is has there been progress? Did organizations follow through on their commitment, were programs developed? Do these programs or initiatives have sticking power in an ever-evolving workforce? During today's week's Digital Meetup, we'll take a deeper look. Today, Jess and Jason are excited to host leaders who are voices of hope, inclusion, diversity, and humanizing work to discuss DEI proof, progress and accountability. We'll unpack this important #NowofWork topic during a Special 90-minute live chat with leaders who you may have seen on past meetups, but never together in this sure to be dynamic panel setting: -Torin Ellis, Speaker/ Founder/Advisor -Jackye Clayton of Textio -Shaun Peet and Michael Metcalf Jr. of NASCAR and DECK Leadership. In this episode of the Aww Shift Podcast, we have invited Michael Metcalf and Shaun Peet, Co-Founders of Deck Leadership. Michael and Shaun pursue their endeavors by helping leaders shift their mindset through the D.E.C.K Leadership stratagems – Diversity, Efficiency, Culture, and Kindness. Today, they will share how leaders should operate, their clients, and leadership as the lagging aspect to success. [07:26] Why should we listen to you? We are still in this high-octane environment where both of us operate on the edge of human brilliance—failures, taking lessons, and parallels. It is easy to translate being a father, husband, leader, etc. but if you are not growing, you are dying and all we want is to see people grow. [12:52] Who do you work with? We worked with Marshall McFadden, Linebackers from Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Football Teams, Softball stars, Navy Seals, Swimmers, etc. for all genders. The landscape and our scope had changed tremendously since we had started this endeavor. [13:55] Leadership as a Lagging Aspect Speed is the currency of business and we are an expert in speed. We don't have great talent recruiting search, poor resources, and not even have the best facilities but we empower and weaponize our culture. We figured out our formula which is D.E.C.K or Diversity, Efficiency, Culture, and Kindness. When you put these four aspects into practice in your company, team, and life, you start seeing successful interactions sprout. Attract higher talent, you can be more competitive. [17:11] Key principles to apply in your life Fail quickly. You will not get it all correct all the time but if you fail quickly and not let it carry and affect you on your next try, you give yourself a chance to succeed. Many people think failure is the end but we think otherwise—don't put a period when life intended a comma. [18:15] You cannot mandate greatness where you tell someone to be the best at something immediately, but you can inspire them to be one. Even if there are rough times, do it in a way that pushes them to their limit. Taking care of yourself, being connected to things you are passionate about, people who care about you, and being authentic makes a lot of difference. [26:00] What should we expect from you? You will get authenticity. We are not polished or tell you something theoretical, we will tell you the things that worked for us in an extreme and intense environment. We figure out what your culture needs to “eat” all of your competitors. [27:27] What promise did God make to the world when He created you? Michael: To be a bridge between people and bring them together. Shaun: To be the one who turns on the lights of anyone's brilliance. Key Quotes: [22:04 – 22:07] “You are not pushing hard enough if no one opposes you.” [22:45 – 22:48] “It's all about inspiring human brilliance regardless of what you do.” Learn more about Michael and Shaun on: Michael's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-metcalf-80b0b0155/ Shaun's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shaun-peet-907ba9154/ Learn more about DECK Leadership and services on: Website: https://deckleadership.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/deck-leadership/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DeckLeadership Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DECKleadership Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/deckleadership/
Pit crew coaches and co-founders of DECK Leadership, Mike Metcalf and Shaun Peet, know what it takes to create high-achieving teams on and off the racetrack. Drawing on their 10 years of NASCAR experience, Mike and Shaun highlight the unexpected parallels between effective teams in the pit crew department and within business. And while speed is the currency of business today, as Mike and Shaun demonstrate, allowing ourselves the time and space to think is key to winning in a performance-driven profession.
How do you get a NASCAR pit crew to work together as one, to have a successful pit stop lead to a successful race? We talked with Mike Metcalf and Shaun Peet, two crew coaches who have turned the lessons they learned on the track into a leadership program for businesses across the country. For more information on their DECK Leadership program, you can check out their website. You can also learn more on the site dedicated to their book, 12 Second Culture.
Shaun Peet and Mike Metcalf believe that speed in business is the careful result of intentional culture that inspires human brilliance. The athletes, authors, and business leaders build high-performing teams on the principles of DIVERSITY, EFFICIENCY, CULTURE and KINDNESS. They're the founders of DECK Leadership and co-authors of 12 Second Culture. They're also pit crew coaches for the most diverse pit crew in NASCAR. They assemble and train 5 HUMANS to change 4 TIRES and add 2 CANS of fuel in a race car in 12 SECONDS, so they know a thing or two about the effectiveness of speed. It doesn't matter if you're changing tires, making widgets, delivering professional services or IT systems. You can't build the fastest, highest-performing teams on the planet without learning how to BECOME a team — and then become MORE than a team. Ryan Malkes and Jess were thrilled to welcome Shaun and Mike as guests on today's episode.

It was a ton of fun on the Top Cheddar podcast as Shaun Peet joined Lolly and Mooner to chat about his hockey journey from the BCHL to the Calder Cup and how that journey led to his new career in Nascar Racing! Shaun Peet played in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) with his hometown Nanaimo Clippers and the Penticton Panthers. From there, he secured a scholarship to Dartmouth College and played four years. After he graduated from Dartmouth, Peet played 7 years of professional hockey. He played in the Western Professional Hockey League, East Coast Hockey League, Central Hockey League, Southern Professional Hockey League and the American Hockey League. That included a run to the Calder Cup (AHL Championship) with the Wilkes-Barre Penguins in 2000-01. While on a hockey suspension, a chance meeting led to an opportunity to tour the inner workings of Nascar. Well, one thing led to another and soon a new career path was on tap for Shaun. Can you imagine spending your career hunting down NFL Quarterbacks AND changing all four tires of a race car in less than 12 seconds? Marshall McFadden can! In this week's episode Marshall and I sit down and talk about both careers. Marshall's football story is about coming from humble beginnings and showing up during the brightest moments. Overlooked by most major college football programs, Marshall took his talents to South Carolina State, a program far off the radar of most NFL scouts. However, he used this to drive him to constantly show up when the lights were brightest, ultimately landing him a job on Sundays playing in the NFL spending time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, and St. Louis Rams. Today, Marshall has traded his football cleats in for a NASCAR uniform as a member of the Chip Ganassi racing team pit crew. We talk about he applies what he's learned on the football field to the high-pressure moments on the race track. It's extremely hard for pro athletes to transition to the next phase in life, but McFadden has done a beautiful job with it. Tune in and enjoy a great conversation!
