In this episode of Wake Up and Read the Labels, host Jen Smiley dives deep into clean eating, the art of gathering around the table, and the truth about the ingredients in our food. Joining her is Leah Delyte, chef, educator, and owner of EAT Marketplace, who shares her inspiring journey of using food to foster joy, health, and connection.Disclaimer:The content provided by Wake Up and Read the Labels and Jen Smiley is for informational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice. This supports our ability to bring you quality content. Key Takeaways:The Connection Between Food and Health: What you eat directly impacts your gut health, immunity, and overall wellbeing. Modern wheat and processed foods differ drastically from those of the past due to genetic modification, chemical use, and ultra-processing. Tips for Eating Clean: Read labels and avoid products with more than 4-5 ingredients. Watch out for misleading "organic" claims on processed foods, and stick to whole, unprocessed ingredients. Regenerative Farming Is the Future: Regenerative farming rebuilds soil health through practices like animal rotation, producing more nutrient-dense foods while reducing environmental harm. Reducing Food Waste: Upcycle kitchen scraps into stocks, soups, or casseroles, and compost when possible. Simple cleaning methods like vinegar rinses make even non-organic produce safer to eat. Family Meals Matter: Regular family meals improve self-esteem, lower risks of substance abuse among children, and foster joy, connection, and better emotional health for everyone. Navigating Dining Out: Ask restaurants what oils they use (opt for butter, olive oil, or ghee over seed oils), stick to smaller local spots, and use tools like the Seed Oil Scout app to find seed oil-free options. Finding Joy in Food: Cooking and sharing meals can be joyful and meaningful. Simple steps like prepping meals with music or loved ones turn a chore into an enjoyable ritual. Leah's Philosophy: "Vote with your dollars" by supporting ethical, sustainable brands and farms. Food is more than nourishment—it's a way to connect, heal, and bring people together.Leah Delyte's Links:Website: https://eatmarketplace.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chefleahdelyte/?hl=enLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leahdelyte/Jen's Links:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wakeupandreadthelabels Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WakeUpAndReadTheLabelsThe Wake Up Label Letter: https://jensmiley.substack.com/subscribeApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wake-up-and-read-the-labels/id1618784569 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7v3WcgicHQrjU9iCEcLZLX

Have you been discouraged in your wellness journey? Maybe you feel like you're putting in a lot of effort, but not seeing the progress you hoped for.Or maybe you feel like there's a million more things you should be doing in your health journey. Perhaps you're so worried about achieving "perfect health" that you're stressed out and haven't been able to rest and enjoy your time (by the way, perfect health doesn't exist). In a world where there's so much new information all the time - new trends, new studies, and new fad diets - sometimes it's important to go back to the basics and steward your body by focusing on nourishment, rest, and joy instead of trying to keep up with all of the latest biohacks. In this episode, Jordan gives encouragement for your health journey, shares Biblical insights about health, and talks about foundational health practices that helped her get through the stress (and lack of sleep) that comes with having young children. You'll Learn:How foundational health practices can help your body handle stressorsWhat to do when you feel like you're not doing enough for your healthWhy small shifts make a huge differenceThe impact that purpose, joy, and rest have on your healthWhat the Bible teaches us about the foundations of good healthWant to dig deeper into this topic? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Sarah Oreck, co-founder and CEO of Mavida Health, to discuss the importance of maternal mental health care and, specifically, all things ADHD. Dr. Sarah shares what Mavida Health does and why they are filling a gap in the mental health space, why ADHD is a big part of their support platform, and how ADHD is often misunderstood, starting in childhood. She shares lifestyle techniques to help work with ADHD symptoms, why it seems like so many mothers are struggling with ADHD right now, and why it's so important to know how your hormones affect both your physical and mental health. We talk about executive functioning and why it's so important, how to communicate your mental health needs to your partner, and why task paralysis happens. Considering discovery calls, doing them now or thinking you might be missing out on them? Check out the full 'sode to better understand the conversion process! The first thing to recognize is where these 'discovery calls' - which are really sales calls - come from. They come from the 'ortho bro' model and selling big packages. Here's why we aren't a fan:1. It's inconvenient for patientsYou're creating an extra barrier for patients. Instead of just filling out a contact form, they have to find a time on your schedule that works. They have to decide to spend a half hour of their time with you and wait days/weeks to even know if you can help! What's actually happening is many patients are seeing this on your website, looking at the times and then disappearing instead of booking.2. Gives the wrong impression of pelvic healthWhat other doctorate-level medical professional does a 'discovery call'? Good luck getting your urologist on the phone to see 'if you're a good fit!'If we're trying to normalize pelvic rehab, it's the wrong impression to be sending. 3. It's not sustainable for a growing businessThis might be feasible when you're small and growing slowly....but if you're doing this, you're costing yourself the leads that could help you grow faster! But once you're busy, these discovery calls take time away from patient care. And if you're trying to outsource these to your clinicians, they are going to struggle and resent it. Patients can still feel heard and taken care of. You just need a good phone script, NOT a discovery call! Much of the existing research on aging has predominantly focused on identifying "cures" rather than exploring strategies for healthy aging. Dr. Esther Walton's is breaking new frontiers with the unconventional approach that aging begins at birth and should be approached through a comprehensive life course strategy that integrates studies of early development, adult psychiatry, and mental aging in later life. Her research program, BrainHealth, aims to fundamentally redefine, enhance, and distinguish mental aging throughout the lifespan by examining patterns of mental aging within the innovative framework of 'brain health'.With the BrainHealth program, Esther hopes to: 1) characterize brain health from birth to old age by establishing robust predictors of brain health in childhood and adolescence2) improve brain health by identifying modifiable protective factors to enhance brain health across the life course3) differentiate between physical and mental aging by developing a tissue-specific mouse model of lifelong brain health. If successful, this program will revolutionize the approach to healthy aging by permitting the early identification and alteration of unhealthy aging trajectories - a key societal challenge of our time.In this week's Everything Epigenetics podcast episode, we explore the fascinating intersection of brain health and epigenetics with Dr. Esther Walton, Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology at the University of Bath. Dr. Walton discusses her pioneering work on DNA methylation and its crucial role in brain development and mental health. This is especially exciting because little is known about the extent to which DNA methylation is linked to individual differences in the brain itself, and how these associations may unfold across development - a time of life when many mental disorders emerge. By combining epigenetics with advanced neuroimaging techniques, her studies continue to uncover how these epigenetic modifications affect brain structure and function over time.In this episode of Everything Epigenetics, you'll learn about: Why Esther studies the brainWhat DNA methylation measured in blood can tell us about the brainHow strongly mental health is linked to physical healthWhat role epigenetics plays in the link between mental and physical healthBrain age How strongly brain age is linked to epigenetic age How to measure brain age Developmental timingThe importance of examining the relationships between methylation, early-life stress, the brain and mental healthSpecific brain age associations that appear and disappear at different life stagesWhat Esther means by “aging starts at birth”The methylation imaging and neurodevelopment (MIND) consortiumWhere to find Esther:University of Bath ProfileLinkedInTwitterSupport the Show.Thank you for joining us at the Everything Epigenetics Podcast and remember you have control over your Epigenetics, so tune in next time to learn more about how.

A Note from James:Dave Asprey was this fat aging tech entrepreneur who realized he was going on a bad path and so he completely changed his life around. He kind of went to the scientific sources and did the research himself and practically started the field of biohacking, of doing experiments on himself with his diet, with the supplements, with the devices he uses. And now it's as if he's 20 years younger than he was 20 years ago.He started Bulletproof Coffee, which I'm sure many of you have heard of, and a new coffee company called Danger Coffee. You've probably listened to him on this podcast. And now he just wrote the book Smarter, Not Harder. I'll describe that in a second.I want to tell a story when Dave asked, but he's been on the podcast a bunch of times when he was on in 20, I think it was 2016, it happened to be coincidentally the first day I was trying standup comedy. So at the end of that episode, it might have even been after we shut down the cameras, at the end of that episode, I asked him, "Dave, I'm doing standup comedy for the first time tonight, and I'm really nervous. What's your advice?" I just wanted to, he's a smart guy. I respect him. I just wanted to put him on the spot a little bit and see what his advice would be. And he thought about it for about a second. And then he said, "When you get up there, love your audience." And that is the best advice for a standup comedy that I have ever heard before or since. And it's really worked well for me. And I would say the same holds true when I write, I always love my audience. And when I do public speaking or even this podcast, I always picture in my head loving the audience. So what does Dave write about in Smarter, Not Harder? Well, his very interesting point is that humans, from an evolutionary perspective, should be somewhat lazy.We need to have a lot of energy when our fight or flight reflex triggers. Like when you have to run from the lion that's chasing you, you have to use a lot of energy very quickly. And then, you rest. But Dave's point is that in our society, just staring at screens, we get that fight-and-flight response sitting still. And so our body and mind don't know what's happening. And his argument is the same for exercise. His point is, and he, and you know, we'll see a lot of people are going to have different opinions on this. His point is you might not need to exercise for hours at a time because. That's not what the human body is supposed to do. It exerts itself for very short spurts of time and then rests. So his whole book is kind of his biohack experiments on exercise, sleep, diet, and how you can live your life to perform more optimally. You know, it's an anti-aging book, so it's in that category. We've done a lot of anti-aging.Podcasts and they're always very fascinating to me and I ask him very, very specific questions about food, supplements, and exercise because I always want to know what I should do. The answers are always enlightening. So anyway, once again, here is Dave Asprey. Episode Description:In a comprehensive discussion about biohacking for better health, Dave Asprey, the founder of Bulletproof Coffee and Danger Coffee, shares his journey from overcoming personal health issues to pioneering in the biohacking space. The conversation expands into Asprey's latest venture, Danger Coffee, and the release of his book Smarter Not Harder, offering insights into efficient exercise, debunking nutrition myths, and providing a deep dive into bodily and mental wellness. The episode covers a broad range of topics including the importance of dietary choices, quality animal proteins, managing stress, optimizing hormones, and the role of supplements like NAD+, zinc, and magnesium. Asprey also touches on technological advancements with an AI tool for supplement guidance, and the crucial balance of testosterone for health. Through personal anecdotes and expert advice, the episode serves as a guide for listeners to navigate their health, dietary habits, and supplement intake for a holistic approach to wellness.
