Who will be the 33 competing for this year's Borg-Warner trophy?IMSA and WEC raced this weekend as well at Laguna Seca and Spa respectively. In the final installment of our interview, Jamie McMurray not-so-fondly remembers his time with Roush Racing, his victory in the 2010 Daytona 500 and how he wound up parting ways with team owner Chip Ganassi and the contentment it EVENTUALLY brought him. We then take a swing at the July 12, 2007 issue of NASCAR Scene. Jamie McMurray beats Kyle Busch to the checkered flag in a heart-pounding finish at Daytona, in a race that saw Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin not playing nice with each other. Mother Nature does Boris Said dirty and a there's a feature on the new Roush Fenway Racing alliance. We start this week with a tribute to the late Bill Baumgardner, the BACE Motorsports team owner who won three consecutive Busch Series championships in 1995-97 with drivers Johnny Benson and Randy LaJoie. Then, in the first of what will be three installments of our interview, Jamie McMurray talks about the perception that he was afraid to race hard, getting hooked up with Winston Cup team owner Chip Ganassi and how he ended up filling in for Sterling Marlin late in the 2002 season. We then take a look at the July 23, 1998 issue of Winston Cup Scene. There's a massive series of stories in this issue dealing with recent injuries to drivers and what could be done about it safety-wise … and from the seriousness of that topic … we move on to the silliness of a Go Kart race with Buckshot Jones … and Tony Stewart. Gossip time! Why did Ross steal that Ferrari from Chip Ganassi? Just who dropped that tire on Jeff's toe at Daytona and became his sworn enemy for life? Which aging F1 driver did Sam give a wedgie to in the pits at Lime Rock? Listen and find out! (Warning: This episode may not actually contain the above information.) This episode's working title was "The Dumbest Things We've Seen in Racing." When we sat down at the mic, it got way more interesting—a discussion about high-pressure environments, room for error, and how "dumb" doesn't always mean what you think. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. This format is called “Ross and Jeff Teach Sam a Thing." Related Trivia: Jeff was at Mosport this weekend with the AWA IMSA Corvettes. Ross was coaching LMP2 remotely from his home in Seattle. Sam was at Road America for the WeatherTech vintage races. Only one of them spilled a Siebken's Root Beer on his shoes and doesn't regret it. Remembering the great Parnelli Jones June 14, 2024 Show host Bruce Martin remembers the great Parnelli Jones, the first driver to break the 150 mile an hour barrier at the Indianapolis 500 in 1962 and the winner of the 1963 500-Mile Race. Martin has exclusive interviews with two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Arie Luyendyk and 1982 Indy 500 Fastest Rookie and one of the great team owners in IndyCar history Chip Ganassi as they remember the racing hero, Parnelli Jones. Phil and Josh return for E213 of the GSP to actually talk about Formula 1, since the Smooth Operator Carlos Sainz returned from an appendectomy and won the Australian Grand Prix. Sainz had overtaken Fish Lips on the track but the Red Fool leader fell out with brake failure. The guys talk about his first DNF in two years, Sainz getting a dominant win with a Ferrari 1-2, McLaren being with them, Mercedes being terrible, Daniel Ricciardo looking at the exit door and Logan Sargeant holding Alex Albon's manpurse. A generally uncompelling weekend at the Thermal Club saw a usual result, with defending series champion Alex Palou win pole and dominate the main event to win his Chip Ganassi team $500,000. The other standout was former 10 car driver Felix Rosenqvist, who's new home at Meyer-Shank suits him well. Phil and Josh look at the race, what can be changed and who made/missed the show. Circuit of the Americas hosted NASCAR and saw William Byron become the first repeat winner of 2024 in dominant fashion. Track limits played a part along with pit road penalties in a race that generally lacked any drama. The new "short track" package continues to suck in actually allowing cars to pass and provide more driveability. Hendrick and Toyota continue to lead while Ford struggles. Chris Bell made a list of enemies, including former teammate Kyle Busch. On the XFinity side, Yung Money benefitted from Bobby Hill parking his car in front of SVG on the final lap of the race, costing both a chance at victory. Sam Mayer finally gets a decent result and there was a mixed bag among the contenders. For the Truck Series, Corey Heim barely had any resistance on his way to his first win of 2024. The revelation was Conor Zilisch, who made his debut and qualified on pole. After a tough start, the Trackhouse development driver moved his way back into the top five at the end of the race. On the flip side, Marco Andretti's rear end fell out of his Roper Racing truck. The GSP Roundup covers F2/F3, Supercars, MotoGP/Moto2, WSBK, NHRA, WRC and Formula E before leading into previews and picks for the Easter weekend races at Richmond for NASCAR Cup and XFinity. Josh lets us know about everything going on in iRacing on his Sim Segment before the Show Close.
It's happened again. Alex Palou has caused another big contract dispute, or it's continued on from last year depending on who you ask - And we called in our super-sub Ryan Erik King to fill in for Cam Buckley to try and make sense of this hot mess. So the latest chapter of the Palou dispute has now had the Champion-Elect Spaniard tell Zak Brown he's backing out of his agreement to join McLaren in 2024 despite having an agreement in place. It's caused yet more tension as Zak's kicked up a stink and ran to Jenna Fryer, Chip Ganassi has commented on the story for the first time ever and rips into McLaren, and even Palou's old management has severed ties with Palou as a fall out of the drama. What the fuck is going on here and what the heck happens next?! We also talk about the Gallagher GP of last weekend and Scott Dixon shocked the world to pull off the Spin-And-Win from the back of the field and the opening lap of the race to win by getting back on sequence via a 2-stopper in a race of 3's. And he had to stop a dominant, 36-lap leading Graham Rahal to do it, after his first pole position in six years. We go in-depth on Dixon's 19th consecutive season with a win, in his 319th consecutive start. And we also talk on yesterday's breaking news that Jack Harvey was immediately released from his RLL contract ahead of Gateway next weekend. All that on a heaped M101!

Tonight, on Trackside with Kevin Lee and Curt Cavin, they start the show discussing the Alex Palou call from earlier today and speculate whether he would consider moving to Formula 1 if they offer a great deal before he can sign with Arrow McLaren in September, the roller coaster of a season that Romain Grosjean has had thus far, and debate if this is the weekend that Palou slips up and opens the door for someone else to win the series. Later in the first hour they look at some drivers that Chip Ganassi could call upon to fill the seats for Palou and Marcus Ericsson if both drivers end up parting ways with CGR and answer some Twitter questions from the race two weeks ago at Road America. During the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt look at how things are going in the IMSA series, discuss some first half of the season questions that Curt has come up with, hand out grades to performances for some teams and drivers, and recap some of the changes that some teams have gone through with half the season left.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Okay, this is now getting ridiculous. Alex Palou is super hot. He took control late on in the GP of Road America and has now taken his third win in the last four races and extended his Championship lead to 74 points over Marcus Ericsson. And as a result, Dre and Cameron deep dive on the man's future. Should Palou stay at Chip Ganassi as the fastest man/car combo in the series and potentially dominate for years to come? Should he still move to McLaren with an outside chance of an F1 seat? Or does he just leave the series altogether and go all-in for an F1 drive? We weigh up the options! And the same goes for Marcus Ericsson too, who's future is up in the air. Chip Ganassi is playing hard ball with an extension for the "Sneaky Swede" but still wants money for his seat, while McLaren are also sniffing with a potential four car expansion in the works. And all of this while Marcus Armstrong is proving his worth in the 11. Is Marcus overselling his own hand? Is Chip arrogant for thinking anyone can win in his cars? A deep dive there too! We also talk the mess of Andretti again as a botched final stop denies Colton Herta a golden chance of winning his first race in over a year and murmurs that Romain Grosjean's relationship with the team is under all sorts of strain. And finally, BEEF. Will Power and Scott Dixon got into it with shoves, double bird salutes and a shit truck. Seriously, you have to hear it to believe it. All that and more on a heaped Motorsport101!
Tonight, on Trackside with Kevin Lee and Curt Cavin, they start the show discussing how fun Sunday's race at Road America was with Alex Palou capturing his third win in the last four races, debate if someone will be able to catch Palou in the series standings with nine races left, and Kevin and Curt examine how some of the struggling teams at this point in the season did at Road America. Additionally, Kevin and Curt discuss the situation between Scott Dixon and Will Power during the practice session Saturday morning before qualifying and the comments that Power made towards Power and Romain Grosjean. Finally, they highlight some notes from the race and answer Twitter questions in the first hour. Managing Director Mike Hull of Chip Ganassi Racing joins Trackside to share his perspective on how dominant Alex Palou has been the last four races, when did it really click for Palou as a driver that has led to his success this season, how special of a driver and person Marcus Ericsson is, compliments Scott Dixon and Palou's teams for getting their cars ready after crashing in the morning practice session before qualifying for Road America, and discuss the future of Marcus Armstrong racing ovals. Also, Kevin and Curt discuss the future of Marcus Ericsson and where the 2022 Indy 500 Champion could be on the move to, the formality of Takuma Sato running ovals the rest of the season for Chip Ganassi Racing, and Kevin highlights how Jackson Lee performed at Road America.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis sat down this week with one of the most accomplished car owners in motorsports history: Chip Ganassi. After finding his way into the world of auto racing through slot cars and dirt bikes, Chip built his own team and established a championship-winning culture that would deliver victories in every major event in the sport, as well as countless season titles across multiple disciplines. The interview discusses Chip's upbringing and career behind the wheel at large, which saw him rise from the Formula Ford division to being the most improved driver in CART in 1983. Chip details his horrific crash at Michigan International Speedway in 1984 that made doctors fear for the worse and sidelined him for six months. He explains it was during his recuperation that he figured out his next move, and before the age of 30, he bought into Patrick Racing. In 1990, the team officially became Chip Ganassi Racing, and as they say, the rest is history. Chip's team has been one of the most dominant forces in American championship car racing over the last 30 years and has grown to have a significant presence in NASCAR and sports car competition as well.
