In this robust assessment of the ANC's reaction to US President Donald Trump's recent pronouncements, political scientist Dr Frans Cronje points out parallels with what led to SA's economic crash that followed PW Botha's Rubicon speech in 1985. Cronje explains that unless the ANC leaders stop finger-wagging and actually listen to what the SuperPower is telegraphing - particularly, SA aiding Iran's nuclear weapon ambitions - the country risks a disaster similar to the 1985 Debt Standstill that sent SA interest rates to 25%, collapsed thousands of SA businesses, sent hundreds of thousands into unemployment and sparked a wave of corporate disinvestment. He spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.

In a recent interview on BizNews Radio, Dr. Frans Cronje, chairman of the Social Research Foundation, provided insights into the public's perception of the Government of National Unity (GNU) in South Africa, approximately 100 days after its formation. He reported a significant uptick in support for the ANC, which has risen from 40% to 45% in voter preference, suggesting a potential return to over 50% if current trends continue. While the DA has also seen slight gains, concerns remain for smaller parties like the EFF, which has lost considerable support. Cronje emphasized that while both the ANC and DA appear to be performing well within the GNU, the future depends on the government's ability to deliver tangible improvements in citizens' lives. If they fail to do so, the shifting sentiments among moderate voters could open the door for a resurgence of more radical parties. In a compelling keynote session at the BizNews Investment Conference BNIC#1, Dr Frans Cronje offered a deep dive into South Africa's Government of National Unity (GNU), unravelling its strategic importance and potential pitfalls. Cronje emphasized that the GNU's strength lies in its coalition between the ANC and DA, aligning the aspirant and established middle classes. He highlighted key challenges such as radicalization and energy policy, cautioning that the success of the GNU will depend on navigating these issues effectively. Cronje's analysis provides a crucial perspective for investors and policymakers looking to understand South Africa's evolving political landscape.

With results of South Africa's watershed election now baked in, political scientist Dr Frans Cronje says the country faces a one-off, historic opportunity to catapult ahead. Whether or not it happens depends entirely on which way a badly bruised ANC jumps. The High Road lies in an ANC which opts to embrace a working partnership with the DA, IFP and others. The alternative is what he calls “the Chernobyl option” when it retains political power in the short-term through a coalition with MK and the EFF - but thereby sows the seeds of its own destruction. The SRF chairman spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg. Sign up for your early morning brew of the BizNews Insider to keep you up to speed with the content that matters. Polling results released today by the Social Research Foundation show a continued slide in support for SA's ruling political party. SRF chairman Dr Frans Cronje says the poll's conclusions on the impact of Jacob Zuma's MKP are consistent with what has been reported in other recent polls. The newcomer's current 13% slice has established it as SA's third biggest political party behind the ANC and Democratic Alliance (25%). Cronje outlines the possible alternatives for politicians, and by extension all South Africans, in the unlikely event that these figures are held in the next 49 days. He spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.
During his Q&A session at BNC#6 in Hermanus, Frans Cronje discussed the shifting landscape of South African politics, emphasising the inevitability of coalition governance. He highlighted the decline of ANC dominance, suggesting a future where no single party holds executive control. Cronje underscored the importance of private actors navigating this transition for societal progress. Despite concerns, he believes in the resilience of institutions against worst-case scenarios, advocating for policies fostering economic growth and certainty to unlock business investment.

In his keynote address at the BizNews Conference in Hermanus, SRF Chairman Dr Frans Cronje shed light on South Africa's evolving political landscape, emphasising the need for strategic analysis over simplistic labels like "positive" or "negative." Cronje delved into the country's economic trajectory, challenges faced by Eskom, and shifts in political power dynamics, including the upcoming election's potential outcomes. Despite gloomy outlooks, Cronje highlighted South Africa's resilience, with private sector interventions, moderate public opinion, and the advantages of geostrategic positioning offering avenues for growth and stability. Cronje's keynote address encapsulated his insights on navigating South Africa's complexities while remaining cautiously optimistic about its future.

The Social Research Foundation polled Jacob Zuma's popularity in his home province of KZN just days before the popular politician announced his support for the new;t formed MK party in opposition to the ANC. SRF chairman Dr Frans Cronje says the data shows Zuma's re-entry is a “game changer” for an ANC which he says is now in panic mode. With Zuma's MK set to draw 10% nationally and around a quarter of the vote in KZN - primarily from the ANC - the ruling party can no longer expect a benign post-election future where it retains power with the help of a smaller party or two. Among the consequences of the Zuma fracture is increased pressure for provincial secessions from a union imposed by the British colonial power in 1910. Cronje spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.
Political scientist Dr Frans Cronje's poll-based Election24 projections for the ANC are more favourable than everyone else, including the party itself. But in this forthright interview, Cronje explains how seen from a historical perspective, his forecast of an ANC vote of around 50% is actually catastrophic, reflective of a deeply embedded downward spiral. He says the penny has already dropped among urban voters where the party is supported by only one-third of voters. Worse is coming, he adds, predicting the ANC will pay a very heavy price for continued abuse of State assets - notably among its currently staunch rural Christian base after the sale once more of SA's global voice, this time to radical fundamentalists. The chairman of the board of the Social Research Foundation is at his brilliant best here. He spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.

In this in-depth interview, Dr. Frans Cronje of the Social Research Foundation offers detailed insights into political dynamics across South Africa's provinces with particular emphasis on the Western Cape where the SRF has just concluded in-depth research. Cronje examines shifting voter sentiments in the DA-run province, concluding that newcomers Action SA and the Patriotic Alliance are attacking the wrong target - they would do better by focusing on former ANC voters whose support in the Western Cape is down from a recent 30% to just 10%. Cronje, currently engaging with movers and shakers in Washington also shares excellent news on AGOA and the US's renewed interest in Africa after realising the gains made on the continent by Russia and China. A month after DA leader John Steenhuisen proclaimed a Moonshot Pact to sweep the ANC from power next year, the coalition has collapsed at a relatively low first hurdle. Although they had the numbers to eject the ANC alliance from power in the Johannesburg Metro, opposition politicians could not agree on some key issues. Steenhuisen is "unavailable," but an official DA statement's reference to "former" coalition partners speaks volumes. Political scientist Dr Frans Cronje, who has been closely involved in the negotiation process, admits things "loop kak" - i.e. discussions are going very badly. But the head of the Social Research Foundation says the turbulence is not unexpected when seen in perspective. He says not all participants appreciate the "epochal change" occurring in SA politics. So mindsets will require time before adjusting to a very different future, which contrasts starkly with an effective one-party state for virtually all of South Africa's past four centuries. The latest polling data from the Social Research Foundation, shared here by chair Dr Frans Cronje, shows that SA's opposition political parties wasted a golden opportunity to punish the ruling ANC when it was most vulnerable. With the notable exception of the IFP (especially in KZN) Cronje says the ANC's other competitors dropped the ball when the tryline beckoned. Biggest loser, research shows, is the radical EFF whose share of the vote has almost halved to a modest 6% in recent months. Cronje believes the ANC's fortunes will be further boosted ahead of the 2024 National Election by a virtual end to loadshedding as long-term plans start to have an impact.
