Have you ever wondered how much of your past has shaped who you are and the experiences you have today? How would you feel if you discovered that the person you dislike the most in this life was the one you loved the most in your last one? As with all of her books, Dena Merriam's latest book, To Dance With the Dakinis: In Search of Self is a study of the universal law of cause and effect, how events in our life, our deeds, thoughts and reactions impel the process of rebirth. But what makes this one different is that she brings the Law of Karma to life by sharing a story that begins in 12th Century Tibet, and then unravels the threads that link together two more incarnations of the same soul - her own - illustrating how the events set in motion in one life, led to the crisis she experiences in the ones that follow. Dena Merriam has been a student of Paramahansa Yogananda and a practitioner of Kriya Yoga meditation for over 40 years. She began working in the inter-faith movement in the late 1990s, and founded the Global Peace Initiative of Women (GPIW) in 2002. She is currently the Chair of the International Advisory Council of the Auroville Foundation in India. Her books include My Journey Through Time, The Untold Story of Sita, When the Bright Moon Rises, Rukmini and the Turning of Time and To Dance with Dakinis. Dena joins us this week to share the 10 best spiritual books that influenced her the most on her life journey, along with some of the great teachings that she learned from her past lives that we can apply to our lives today. #DenaMerriam #ParamahansaYogananda #Incarnation #SandieSedgbeer #NoBSSpiritualBookClub #Lifestyle #Spirituality #Science #Metaphysics #Books --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sandie-sedgbeer/support

To Dance with Dakinis is a study of the universal law of cause and effect, how events in our life, our deeds, thoughts, and reactions impel the process of rebirth. The story begins in 12th century Tibet, with a woman's search for the Goddess and the deeper truths of life. You meet ordinary people dealing with human suffering and you visit magical lakes and mountains. You also meet the great Mother, and through her dakinis, adepts, gurus, and loving souls who guide us life after life, without revealing their spiritual stature. Then we meet the great Guru Rinpoche, known to Tibetans as Padmasambhava. We will learn more of the spiritual history of Tibet and India and the deep interconnection of these two great civilizations. The story unravels the threads that link together three lives. Through a crisis that Padma, our main character encounters, she is led to a Master who helps awaken memories of her previous life in medieval France and an earlier life in China, during which events were set in motion that led to the crisis she now faced. This book recounts deeply touching tales of her experiences and learnings amidst the cultural settings of the times she lived in. In the process of her journey, great teachings are conveyed, teachings that we can apply to our lives today. Call it Life's sense of humor or divine justice, that the person you resented the very sight of, becomes a dear relative in the next; an illiterate low-caste woman in one life is reborn as a queen; the unfulfilled love of one life comes to ultimate fruition in another one; and so much more. It may suddenly strike you that all our feelings of resentment, anger or pride are ultimately futile—and what a liberating realization that is! Life doesn't forget anything – neither your good deeds and vows, nor your wrong deeds or thoughts that you tried to hide from all. Dena Merriam began working in the inter-faith movement in the late 1990s when she served as Vice Chair of the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders held at the United Nation in New York in the year 2000. She subsequently convened a meeting of women religious and spiritual leaders at the Palais des Nations in Geneva and from that gathering founded the Global Peace Initiative of Women (GPIW) in 2002, an organization chaired by a multi-faith group of women spiritual leaders. In 2008, Ms. Merriam was one of the founding members of the Contemplative Alliance, which later became a program of GPIW. The purpose of the Alliance is to bring together meditation teachers and practitioners in a collective effort to uplift and transform society, while caring for and honoring our Mother Earth. This book is told through the voice of a dancer in ancient Dwarka, a city on the western coast of India. It was on a pilgrimage to Dwarka a few years ago that Dena experienced her life. But even though this book recounts events in her life and follows her through three incarnations, this story is not truly about her but about Rukmini, the one who was working behind the scenes, as Rukmini and Shri Krishna set the framework for the era that was beginning to unfold. This narrative shows how Rukmini Mata enabled those around her to fulfil samskaras from past births―the karma one has accrued in the cycle of life, death, and rebirth―bringing closure to unfinished relationships and desires. Dena include many stories told by women to other women, recounted by those living in Dwarka in close association with Rukmini, in the hope of showing how an incarnation of the Universal Mother comes to guide an evolving humanity. A JOURNEY THROUGH LIFETIMES with DENA MERRIAM “To make steel, you have to go through fire.” – author Dena Merriam, on growth through challenges “The foundation of the Universe is love.” – author Dena Merriam Episode Summary: Today we talk about past lives, past lives, and past lives! Dena Merriam is an author, storyteller and founder of the Global Peace Initiative for Women -- bringing spiritual resources to address critical global challenges, such as conflict, social justice, and ecological scarring of the earth. Her first book “Journey Through Time, a Spiritual Memoir of Life, Death and Rebirth” takes us on a journey back through seven consecutive lives, revealing the intricate patterns that emerge as one life leads into another. Her second book, “The Untold Stories of Sita, an Empowering Tale for Our Time” takes us back to a much earlier age, several thousand years BCE to a pre-patriarchal era when humanity had not fully separated itself from the natural world. Her third book, “When the Bright Moon Rises: The Awakening of Ancient Memories”, is currently out. She has a fourth book in the works. Listen in to hear how Dena came to know all of her previous lives and the tapestry of interconnectedness between them. Topics We Discuss: [3:55] Dena's spontaneous recollection of 7 previous and interconnected lives, and her investigation in today's world to validate her memories. Recalling pre-war Russia and WW2 in Europe while trying to navigate her current life. Being skeptical at first, Dena traveled to those locations to confirm that her memories were valid. [7:18] How patterns, aspirations and desires emerged like a beautiful mandala interweaving lives. [8:10] there's no set timeframe on how long you have to wait to come back into a new incarnation. The flexibility of time in non-[physical dimensions. When the conditions are right, we “take life”. [9:55] How people and places stimulate her ancient memories. [11:20] Visiting a temple in India caused spontaneous recollection of a painful experience of love lost. A time without warfare. A time of simple pleasures and peaceful, joyful life. [14:52] Recalling a life in China, the wisdom of the Tao, and a great spiritual depth. [16:21] Spiritual lessons, knowledge, wisdom, awakenings. How her experiences changed her relationship with death, which she calls the next frontier of science. Along with acknowledging other dimensional beings – beings we don't see. Understanding consciousness separate from the material form, separate from the body. [18:52] An exercise: take down the highlights of this life – the best and the worst of it. [19:40] The foundation of the universe is love. The mind boggling patience and love that is poured from these other realms. [20:56] The alignment for Dena to found the Global Peace Initiative for Women with lessons from previous lives. Recollections from previous pre-patriarchal times. The contribution to create more gender balance. [27:31] Future life memories, or life blueprints, or likely scenarios, or potentialities. How we can tap into and create our future. [30:50] Exercise: what is left undone for you? [32:06] Most people are creating unconsciously; reacting to circumstances vs consciously creating. [32:38] The two reasons to reincarnate: karma, or service. (Reference “Life, Death and the Space Between” episode #231 “Being Ram Dass”.) [35:46] The complexity of karma. Process of learning, awakening, rectifying imbalances. Our own thought and behavior habits/patterns. Western misunderstanding of the concept of karma. [38:44] Dena's biggest takeaways... The power of love from the great teachers and the guidance we receive. The overwhelming outpouring of love from beings that we cannot see. [41:01] Dena's most significant lifetimes. The biggest moments of transformation. [42:33] A fully awakened person remembers all their lifetimes and history. Akashic records. [43:51] Many people have glimpses of past lives. Self-reflection plus meditation is a path toward remembering. We just need ask for help. [44:30] Dena answers Amy's speed round questions. These are 2 episodes from 2008, where I speak with contributors to the book A Global Guide to Interfaith, which came out the previous year. I've mentioned before that for a program with the word "Interfaith" in its title, we don't really examine actual interfaith movements all that often. We did near the beginning, back in the 1990s. But feedback has been almost unanimously favorable on our decision to widen the parameters. Episode #1 here has us talking to Dena Merriam, a well known interfaith activist who is now on the board of directors of Hindu American Foundation. Episode #2 is with Allison VanDyke, with the Temple of Understanding in NYC. Each of these remarkable women wrote essays for the book. Listen & Learn.
In today's Stellar Experience, Dena Merriam returns with a meditation to send love to the Earth and all the forms of life that inhabit our planet—moving the logical mind to the intuitive mind to communicate with nature.
Dena Merriam, the founder of the Global Peace Initiative of Women, shares her third book, When the Bright Moon Rises: The Awakening of Ancient Memories. Dena shares a rich and extensive story of her past lives that begins in Vedic India around the 9th century B.C.E. A sweeping story of love and compassion and living with grace and inner peace.
Talk at the 2014 Integral Yoga Retreat in Greenville, SC.
Dena is a long-time meditation practitioner in the lineage of Kriya Yoga. She came in contact with her guru Paramhansa Yogananda at the age of 20, long after he had left his physical form, and devoted many years to practicing his teachings and studying the texts of the ancient Vedic tradition. During her years of meditation, many vivid memories of past births began to emerge, revealing an intricate and subtle patten of cause and effect, the law of karmic unfolding. These memories became the subject of her books. The purpose of sharing these intimate stories was to help people see the long arch of their life, whether they retain memories or not, to help overcome fear and anxiety about death, to understand more fully the workings of cause and effect and to know that each one of us, moment to moment, is creating the blueprint for our future. Her first book My Journey through Time: A Spiritual Memoir of Life, Death and Rebirth takes Dena on a journey back through seven consecutive lives, revealing the intricate patterns that emerge as one life leads into another, picking up and furthering themes initiated at an earlier time. Her second book The Untold Story of Sita: An Empowering Tale for our Time takes the reader back to a much earlier age, several thousand years b.c.e. to a pre-patriarchal era when humanity had not fully separated itself from the natural world. There are many messages from that time that are particularly relevant today. A third book called When the Bright Moon Rises: Awakening Ancient Memories will be released in the fall of 2020. A fourth book is also in the works: The Seeds of Satya Yuga recounts memories of a life in a far higher age and how events in that life effected subsequent births, carving a path for the soul's awakening. Dena's story is the story of each one of us, of course with much variation. The history of each one of us is filled with patterns and interweavings, that unfolding of so many events, the birth and fulfillment of desires and aspirations, loss and gain, all of which have made us who we are today. While on her own spiritual journey of awakening, Dena has been active in the public sphere. Having founded the non-profit organization The Global Peace Initiative of Women in 2002, she has worked to bring spiritual voices to address global challenges. She has spoken in many forums on the need for a shift in consciousness if we are to address successfully ecological decline, economic and gender imbalance, climate instability, violence and other critical issues. Before writing about her own spiritual experiences, Dena wrote about art and spirituality, publishing a number of books on contemporary artists and for some years editing the magazine Sculpture Review. She received her Master's Degree from Columbia University, has served on numerous boards and in 2014 received the Niwano Peace Prize for her international work.

When the Bright Moon Rises is first and foremost a love story: love between the sages and the cosmic forces known as the deities, love of the sages for the people, and love between individuals seeking to express this universal force of love that exist within all of us. It is also a study of karma, the cosmic law of cause and effect. This narrative begins in Vedic India, around the 9th century BCE, with the meeting of two people and the seeding of a love that cannot be fulfilled but which comes to fruition nearly 10,000 years later during the Tang Empire in China, where they are reborn as the renown poet Li Bai and his poet wife. The awakening of her memories of previous births initiates an inner struggle that is only resolved under the guidance of her Daoist Master. This is her story. Dena is an author, storyteller, and the founder and convener of the Global Peace Initiative of Women. Bringing spiritual resources to address critical global challenges, such as conflict, social justice, and ecological scarring of the earth. Over the years sshe has worked to bring greater gender balance and balance between the Abrahamic and Dharma- based religious traditions for a more inclusive interfaith movement.

On this episode, Laura Chandler is joined by writer, activist, and Founder of the Global Peace Initiative of Women, Dena Merriam, to talk about her latest book, When the Bright Moon Rises: The Awakening of Ancient Memories. The book spans several periods from Vedic India to the Han and Tang Dynasties of China. It is an eloquent testimony to the evolution of a soul and the lessons learned over lifetimes. Dena and Laura discuss the remarkable awakening that was the impetus for writing the book, as well as the significance of the times we are living in and the part past lives play in understanding our current life. Dena is the author of two other books, The Untold Story of Sita: An Empowering Tale for Our Time and My Journey Through Time. In addition to being the Founder of the Global Peace Initiative of Women (GPIW), Dena was the Vice Chair of the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders held at the United Nations in New York in the year 2000. She is a long time practitioner of Kriya Yoga meditation and a devotee of the spiritual master Yogananda for over 40 years. She received her master's degree from Columbia University in sacred literature, and has served on the boards of many prestigious organizations, including the Harvard Center for the Study of World Religions and the Interfaith Center of New York. Our featured music is from Rajeev Taranath, one of India's foremost classical musicians, and a master of the sarod. Do you believe in karma, the law of cause and effect? To quote Wayne Dyer: “How people treat you is their karma – how they react is yours.” Another wise man said that we are free to choose, but we are not free from the consequence of our choice. But how often have we seen people doing horrible things, lying, cheating, hurting others – and they still seem to get away with it? Does this mean that karma doesn’t exist and that there is no justice in the universe? But what if our karma is like the blueprint for future lives? What if we had past lives and are working through our old karma this time around? This is how many Eastern philosophies view our existence. You may think past lives don’t exist because you have no recollection of living in ancient Egypt or during the medieval times. But my guest on this next episode of Get Real, Dena Merriam, has very clear memories about her past lives and wrote several bestselling books about it. During her years of meditation, many vivid memories of past births began to emerge, revealing an intricate and subtle pattern of cause and effect, the law of karmic unfolding. The purpose of sharing these intimate stories is to help people see the long arch of their life, whether they retain memories or not, to help overcome fear and anxiety about death and to understand more fully the workings of cause and effect. Join Dena and I to open your mind to the possibility that each one of us, moment by moment, is creating the blueprint for our future. 00:00 - Can people do terrible things and get away with it? 07:00 - Research around the link between phobias and past memories 10:33 - How past life memories are triggered 14:28 - Reliving trauma of a past life 18:30 - Fear of death, and how knowing our past and future lives affect it 20:19 - How challenging relationships need to balanced out 24:00 - Karma as representations of desires 26:43 - The emerging patterns of divisiveness and domination 33:47 - Where are we heading towards as a collective? 35:10 - What can we do as individuals to progress?

Some people experience past life memories through past life regression. Dena's memories returned spontaneously in conjunction with her meditation practice.Dena says the memory of her past lives was so vivid she would enter a location and then realize it was familiar and that would trigger vivid scenery and other images of that past incarnation. When the Bright Moon Rises: The Awakening of Ancient Memories is Dena's third book about her past life memories. She writes in novel form about a love story that spans 10,000 years and she includes the between life time encounters with a spirit guide who offers support and coaching in the interim. The locations are India and China. We learn through the characters about the history of the eras and what it might be like to experience knowing the purpose of each incarnation and knowing death is not final.Past life awareness can sometimes offer healing in the present incarnation. Dena's memories from this past life saga have reconnected her to a love of poetry. And now the poems have begun to flow again. --- Bio: Dena is a long-time meditation practitioner in the lineage of Kriya Yoga. She came in contact with her guru Paramhansa Yogananda at the age of 20, long after he had left his physical form, and devoted many years to practicing his teachings and studying the texts of the ancient Vedic tradition. (Encore Show) Title: The Untold Story of Sita / Global Peace Initiative For Women Author: Dena Merriam www.GPIW.org
The Untold Story of Sita replaces the traditional narrative of Sita's life as told in the Ramayana with Sita as she truly is -- an incarnation of the great Devi Narayani. Sita comes to Earth to join Sri Ram in setting the foundation for a new civilization at a time when humans are becoming separate from the natural world. She seeks to embed a great love for the forests and rivers, plant and animal life in the hearts and minds of the people, and to share the high spiritual accomplishments of the great women rishis and sages, many of whom you meet along Sita's journey. This is a story of a woman's wisdom, courage and strength, her love for the manifest and unmanifest worlds, and her selfless sacrifices for the welfare of all. So step into Sita's time and see what life was like during a more spiritually more advanced age, when there was an understanding of Dharma, not just as duty but as an alignment with the higher forces of love that make possible the preservation of our world.

Title: The Untold Story of Sita / Global Peace Initiative For Women Author: Dena Merriam www.GPIW.org
Topic: Can an ancient story from India provide a templet for us to grow spiritually through leading a balanced life of mindfulness, service, and compassion… even in today’s topsy-turvey world? We’ll talk to Dena Merriam, author of “The Untold Story of Sita: An Empowering Tale For Our Time”. We think you’ll see the parallels. Website: gpiw.org
The Untold Story of Sita: An Empowering Tale for our Time, by Dena Merriam, takes a new look at the classic Ramayana by tearing away the patriarchal lens through which the story is traditionally viewed. In the traditional account, Sita is a secondary figure, and her true nature is hard to access. In this story, told by the people of Sita’s household, the role of the sacred feminine is predominant. Sita is a beloved figure throughout Southeast Asia. Her life and message extends beyond and particularly relevant for the modern age when a new understanding of feminine wisdom and leadership is needed, and when we are facing an unprecedented ecological crisis. Mata Sita and Sri Ram were instrumental in setting the foundation for a new civilization during a time of transition from one era, or yuga, to another. We stand at a similar time in history, where we are experiencing the passing of one era and intuitively feel the birthing of another, as yet unknown. One thing seems inevitable, however, that the new society we are striving for must be ecologically-based. There is an excellent value in looking to lessons of the past to move forward. Dena Merriam is the Founder and Convener of the Global Peace Initiative of Women, bringing spiritual resources to address critical global challenges, such as conflict, social justice, and ecological scarring of the earth. She received her Master’s Degree from Columbia University in sacred literature. Dena has served on the boards of the Harvard Center for the Study of World Religions. In 2014 she received the Niwano Peace Prize for her interfaith peace efforts. Join Dena Merriam and me on Tuesday, July 16, 10-11 A.M. CT US. We will be having a conversation about her remarkable spiritual journey, and her latest book, The Untold Story of Sita.
A Journey Through Time… Examining Past Lives, Reincarnation, and the Materialization of our Present Realities Author and peace activist Dena Merriam's new book “My Journey Through Time” tells the story of how the events and people she has encountered in life served to awaken memories of past births, memories that help her to understand her current life and provide spiritual direction and guidance. As she remembered past teachers and loved ones, she realized that the most important message is the continuation of these relationships through time...through death and rebirth. The body may perish, but love continues, only to be reawakened at another point in time. We meet old friends again and again in different forms and situations to continue what was left unsaid and undone. Join us for an enlightening conversation on bridging our past and present life experiences. Dena Merriam is the Founder and Convener of the Global Peace Initiative of Women (GPIW), bringing spiritual resources to address critical global challenges, such as conflict, social justice, and ecological scarring of the earth. Over the years she has worked to bring greater gender balance and balance between the Abrahamic and Dharma-based religious traditions for a more inclusive interfaith movement. Merriam served as Vice Chair of the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders, held at the United Nation in New York in the year 2000. She subsequently convened a meeting of women religious and spiritual leaders at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, and from that gathering founded the Global Peace Initiative of Women in 2002. Among GPIW's many programs is the organization of a session on the inner dimensions of climate change at the annual UN Climate Summits. In 2008, Ms. Merriam was one of the founding members of the Contemplative Alliance, which later became a program of GPIW, to explore how meditation and contemplative practices are reshaping the spiritual landscape of our societies. The UNTOLD STORY OF SITA: An Empowering Tale For Our Time In her latest book, The Untold Story of Sita: An Empowering Tale for our Time, Dena Merriam takes a new look at the classic Ramayana by tearing away the patriarchal lens through which the story is traditionally viewed. In the traditional account, Sita is a secondary figure and her true nature is hard to access. In this reading of the story, told by the people of Sita’s household, the role of the sacred feminine is predominant. Author and peace activist Dena Merriam's new book My Journey Through Time tells the story of how the events and people she has encountered in life served to awaken memories of past births, memories that help her to understand her current life and provide spiritual direction and guidance.

Aired Wednesday, 11 July 2018, 8:00 PM ETDena Merriam – My Journey Through TimeAstrophysicist, author and host of Cosmos, and skeptic Carl Sagan once asked the Dali Lama what he would do if reincarnation was disproved by science. The Dali Lama, with his great wisdom and equally great sense of humor responded, “If science can disprove reincarnation, Tibetan Buddhism would abandon reincarnation… but it’s going to be mighty hard to disprove reincarnation.” What if we do come back, lifetime after lifetime? Would we learn from each existence and bring that wisdom back with us? Would it make us more loving, compassionate and better stewards of this world that we have been entrusted with?My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Dena Merriam, experienced events in her life that awakened memories of previous lifetimes. My Journey Through Time: A Spiritual Memoir of Life, Death, and Rebirth ~ Dena Merriam My Journey Through Time is a spiritual memoir that sheds light on the workings of karma— the law of cause and effect that creates one’s present circumstances and relationships—as we see it unfold through Dena’s vivid memories of her previous births. We travel back in time as Dena learns of a life in early 20th century Russia, ranging from the overthrow of the Czar through Nazi Germany; then it’s back further to a life in early 19th century America in the Deep South. With each past life, you can see the way in which it has impacted her present life, how it has stemmed from the end of the previous birth, and how it will influence her next life.
