Dr. Jacqui Lewis, the Senior Minister for Public Theology and Transformation at Middle Church, to discuss how to reject stigmas and advance liberation. It's Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish holiday marking the New Year. And this year, it falls at a time when Israel has just invaded Lebanon, and is approaching the one-year mark of Hamas' attack on Israel. Jo Berry has founded the charity ‘Building Bridges for Peace and is an international speaker and workshops facilitator committed to bringing peace to the world. Jo is also an executive committee member of Uniting For Peace which promotes a culture of peace, non-violence and sustainable development. She is on the Board of the Global Alliance for Ministries and Infrastructures for Peace and is working to create a Department for Peace in Europe. Jo is also a founder member of Survivors Against Terror. Its mission is to help our country tackle terrorism more effectively and ensure victims and their families get the proper support. Jo shares her story below. On October 12th 1984 my father, Sir Anthony Berry and 4 others were killed in the bombing of the Grand Hotel, Brighton as they attended the Conservative Party Conference. I made a personal decision just two days later, to bring something positive out of this emotionally shattering trauma and to try and understand those who had killed him. I chose to give up blame and revenge, instead taking responsibility for my pain and feelings, transforming them into passion for peace. The journey of healing began with my intention and I trusted that life would then bring me the opportunities to heal and grow. Two months later I randomly shared a taxi with a young Irish man whose brother had been in the IRA and had been killed by a British soldier. We should have been enemies but instead we talked about a world where peace was possible and where there were no enemies. As I left the taxi, I had a flash of inspiration, this was one way I could make a difference, I could build a bridge across the divide. The hardest bridge to build was with Patrick Magee, who was sentenced for his part in planting the Brighton bomb and released as part of the Good Friday Peace Agreement in 1999. I made enquiries from mutual friends and finally met Pat for the first time in November 2000 at a friend's house in Dublin. My intention was to hear his story so that I could experience him as a human being rather than a faceless enemy. I was scared and had doubts, but the strongest part of me needed to see him and speak to him. I asked him many questions and shared a little about my Dad. At first he began to express his political perspective, which though I was familiar with was hard to hear but I could see he was a sensitive and intelligent person. Then something changed. He stopped talking and said he didn't know who he was any more, he wanted to hear my anger, my pain and what could he do to help. It was as if he had taken off his political hat and had now opened up and became vulnerable. The conversation was very different after that and a new journey started, one which we are still on. He now had a need to meet me and rediscover his lost humanity. When he planted the bomb he was not seeing human beings in the hotel, they were just a means to an end. During our meetings, he began to develop the awareness that he had killed a human being with a soul, someone he could have sat down and had a cup of tea with. He would later say that he was disarmed by the empathy I gave him, that he would have found it easier if I had met him shouting, blaming and defending my position. I wasn't there to argue my point; I was there to listen and experience his humanity. After three hours I could not talk any more and ended our meeting by thanking him for his willingness to engage with me so honestly and he said he was sorry he had killed my Dad. Looking back on the years which have passed since the bomb, I am so touched by the amazing people I have met and the opportunities I have had to make a difference. I have now shared a platform with Pat Magee over 300 times and I see how our dialogue has inspired others to choose a non-violent solution. I have learnt so much from this challenging dialogue and continue to do so. I have learnt about my capacity for violence and for non-violence. I am learning to give up blame and choose empathy. I passionately believe that there is humanity in everyone, and every time we demonise the “other” we are delaying the onset of peace in this world. Once we find our own humanity, and we see the humanity in the other, then we are going to want them to have their human rights, their good housing, food, medicine, education and freedom to be themselves, to be safe and secure. We will want for them all what we want for ourselves. Peace happens when we treasure everyone, all creatures, our land, our planet, and work together to find solutions in which everyone wins. We have been speaking in many different places including Lebanon, Rwanda and Israel and Palestine. We have been all over Europe and in the UK we have spoken in schools, Universities, religious groups, youth groups and many organizations. I am now focused on working with young people and and empowering them to be positive changemakers.
Thom Francis welcomes poets Ed Rinaldi, Karen Peters, & Samuel Maurice who shared their work at the 2024 Word Fest Open Mic at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts on April 27, 2024. Poet, Peace Activist, and Photographer Dan Wilcox recently wrote on his blog: "The very 1st Albany Word Fest was held on September 8, 2001, at the Greenhouse Shelter in Thatcher Park, in the mountains outside of Albany. It was the brain-child of [Albany-area poet and host] R.M. Engelhardt. That day featured readings by 31 poets, divided into five groups. There was even an open mic, where six poets shared their work. "Over the years there were various iterations of Word Fest, including strings of multi-day events, even folding in the Third Thursday Open Mic as well as other regularly-scheduled events into a grand Word Fest week, all held in Albany, many at the UAG Gallery on Lark St., eventually in 2005 switching from the Fall to April (to coincide with National Poetry Month). Then the pandemic." In April of this year, the Word Fest and the Open Mic made it's return, this time in Troy and West Sand Lake. The two-day event was filled with books, writers, featured spoken word artists, and an amazing lineup of open mic poets. Today, we are going to hear from three poets who took the stage at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts. Ed Rinaldi, who has started to come back out to literary events, read an untitled philosophical meditation. Karen Peters, who was a new voice for many in the room, read poems with rain and snow and a paper bag. The final reader was Samuel Maurice, who as an intern for the Hudson Valley Writers Guild was around all day setting up the venue. Samuel, who co-hosts the Invocation open mic series at The Eleven on Lark St. in Albany, read one poem, “Love Poem to My Hangnail.” You can find more information, photos, and videos on all of the Word Fest events on the Hudson Valley Writers Guild website, hvwg.org

Barak Sella is an educator, activist, writer, researcher, and one of the leading Israeli experts on US-Israel relations and World Jewry. Born in Texas, Barak moved to Israel in 1994, exactly one year before the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, the Israeli Prime Minister who was most dedicated to making peace with the Palestinians. This event deeply affected him and became an inseparable part of his socialization in Israeli society. Ten years later, as a soldier in the Israeli Defense Forces, Barak was part of the disengagement from Gaza and in the unit that evacuated the very last Jewish settlers from the region. We talk about all of this in this episode and how those formative events have impacted the way Barak understands his family's past, the world presently, and his hopes for the future. Throughout his career, Barak has focused on building bridges within communities in Israel and worldwide. He was formerly the Executive Director of the Reut Institute, one of Israel's foremost think tanks on strategy and leadership. During his years at the institute, Barak worked with leading actors in the Israeli government and with NGOs from Israel and the US on various issues: Israel delegitimization, antisemitism, Jewish Peoplehood, and Israel-US relations. Barak recently graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School for Government and is currently a Middle East Initiative fellow at the Harvard Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. Yafa Sakkejha was named after the city of Jaffa, where, until 1948, her Palestinian grandparents lived and owned property and managed orange groves. Sakkejha's mother grew up in East Jerusalem, but left the country during the First Intifada in the late 1980s. Sakkejha, who was born and raised in Toronto, feels deep pain over the devastation that has resulted from Oct. 7—not just for the Palestinian people and her own relatives still living in the war zone, but also for the Israeli victims, hostages and Canadian Jews facing antisemitism. Which is why Sakkejha is now taking an active role in an Israeli peace-building initiative called Friends of Standing Together. It's a branch of the original organization founded in 2015 by Israelis–both Jews and Palestinians living in Israel–to work for peace, civil and human rights, and security for both sides. Since the war began, Standing Together has focused on calls to end the fighting. Yafa Sakkejha joins The CJN Daily to speak about her personal experiences since Oct. 7, and what she wants her Jewish neighbours to understand. In a society plagued by youth violence and trauma, how can we stop the cycle of harm and help young people make better choices? Through empathy, compassion, and forgiveness, we can address youth violence. We can't fight violence for violence, as it will not solve things. However, doing good can help us overcome resentment, forgive others and ourselves, and ultimately find fulfillment and peace even amid life's greatest challenges. Meet Azim Khamisa, author and peace activist in San Diego, California. In 1995, his 20-year-old son Tariq was murdered by a 14-year-old gang member. This tragic event prompted Khamisa to establish the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to promote nonviolence and prevent youth violence. In this episode, Azim Khamisa shared his personal story of loss and grief, emphasizing the transformative power of forgiveness in healing and empowerment. Tune in to learn more! We grapple with this question as Diana recounts painful instances where her younger son faced discrimination, and how the family rallied to protect and affirm his worth. Our dialogue brings to light the power of speaking up against injustice—how a simple act of intervention can be a beacon for change and support. Parents and educators alike are called upon to be fierce advocates for our children, creating respectful, safe spaces that celebrate diversity rather than merely tolerating it.Wrapping up our conversation, we plunge into the transformative potential of personal stories to bridge divides and promote social justice. Diana's transformation from a soldier into a peacemaker echoes throughout our discussion, inspiring us to consider how we can all contribute to building a more inclusive and just society. We also touch upon the Waging Peace Project, an initiative close to my heart that fosters local acts of courage to spread joy and justice. As we close, we leave you with a reminder of the imperative to engage in conversations around race and identity in every household and how this paves the way for our children to thrive in a world that yearns for unity. Join us for this enlightening dialogue and learn how you can follow Diana's work and delve into her wisdom further. COME SAY Hey!! Even if you don't know Jules Rabin, there's a good chance that you have seen him protesting or read one of his many letters to the editor or commentaries in local publications. Rabin is Vermont's most tenacious and dedicated peace activist. He celebrated his 100th birthday on April 6 by asking friends to join him in downtown Montpelier to protest Israel's war on Gaza.Rabin grew up in Boston, the youngest of five children. His father worked in a junkyard sorting metal and the family struggled to get by. His experience living in poverty in a working class community during the Depression made him a lifelong crusader for social justice. Rabin attended the Boston Latin School, then went on to get a bachelor's degree at Harvard and studied anthropology in graduate school at Columbia University. He lived in Greenwich Village where he met his wife Helen. In 1968, he moved to Vermont to teach anthropology at Goddard College, where he taught for nine years. After Goddard downsized and he lost his teaching job, Jules and Helen started Upland Bakers, baking sourdough bread for 35 years in a wood-fired oven that they built. Their bread earned such a loyal following that a local store posted a sign to customers: “To prevent RIOTS and acts of TERRORISM, we ask you to please limit your purchase of Upland French Bread to no more than three loaves.”Jules Rabin attended his first protest at the age of 8, and has protested wars in every generation. From 1960 to 1961, he participated in a 7,000-mile march from San Francisco to Moscow to promote nonviolence and nuclear disarmament. He spent years protesting against the Vietnam War, and in the early 2000s, just as the Iraq War was starting, he could be found in a weekly peace vigil in front of the Montpelier Federal Building in a protest that continued uninterrupted for nine years. Rabin, who is Jewish, has long protested Israel's mistreatment of Palestinians.“How could the Nazi genocide of Jews 1933-45 be followed by the Israeli genocide of Palestinians today?” asked Rabin. He held a sign with a similar message at a recent protest. “I feel so strongly that what Israel is doing today to Palestinians so much resembles what Germans did to Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto and everywhere else in Europe and World War II. It's kind of a pitiless wrecking of human flesh.”Jules and Helen Rabin have lived in Marshfield in the same house for 56 years, where they raised their two daughters, Hannah and Nessa. They have three grandchildren.I asked Rabin what keeps him protesting. “It's not that I'm a morbid person always looking for the darkest corner of the room to squat in and be miserable in,” he replied. But he added, “One can't look the other way when something dreadful is going on.”

Canadian Israeli activist Vivian Silver dedicated her life to peace. When she was killed in the Oct. 7 attacks, her sons faced an impossible question: Is peace still worth fighting for? Read more:Vivian Silver grew up in Winnipeg, Canada, and moved to Israel in 1974 to start a new kibbutz and devote her life to peace. She arranged a solidarity bike ride on both sides of the Gaza border fence. Her friends from Gaza called her on Jewish holidays. Her politics had been unwavering. But then, Silver was missing after the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 that left more than 1,200 people dead and nearly 250 kidnapped, and sparked a war that still rages more than two months later. More than 20,000 people have been killed in Gaza so far.In the weeks that followed the attack, Silver's sons, Yonatan and Chen Zeigen, tried to square their mother's moral crusade with their desire for justice.International investigative correspondent Kevin Sieff was there, too, following the brothers as they asked an impossible question: In the wake of their mother's murder, is peace still worth fighting for?

A prominent Minnesota peace activist has died. Erica Bouza was a member of Women Against Military Madness, or WAMM. Her commitment to the anti-nuclear movement led to at least two arrests at demonstrations against the Honeywell Corporation in 1983. Honeywell manufactured cluster bombs. At the time, her husband Tony Bouza was Minneapolis' chief of police.MPR News correspondent Regina Medina spoke to Mary Lou Ott, Erica's friend and fellow WAMM member.Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation.Subscribe to the Minnesota Now podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. The entire Gaza Strip has become "one of the most dangerous places in the world," according to the UN Agency providing humanitarian aid. This weekend in London, a vigil was held outside Downing Street to demonstrate that both Israelis and Palestinians are suffering and pleading for an end to the cycle of violence. One of the main proponents of this peace movement is Robi Damelin, whose son David was killed by a Palestinian sniper in 2002. Instead of being consumed by hate and revenge, she devotes her life towards peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Robi joins Christiane in the studio. As Israel's onslaught against Gaza unleashes ever greater horrors, supporters of peace have become increasingly targeted. In Germany, most pro-Palestinian protests have been banned, often using the justification of fighting antisemitism.I speak to German-Israeli author and Jewish peace activist Tomer Dotan-Dreyfus on Germany's crackdown, the racist implications - and why it doesn't make Jewish people safer. Here's a letter from Jewish writers, academics, journalists, artists, and cultural workers living in Germany condemning the crackdown: https://www.nplusonemag.com/online-only/online-only/freedom-for-the-one-who-thinks-differently/ Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Today's guest, Ken Nwadike explains, what we need more of is love, empathy, and peace – and a simple hug can go a long way. Welcome back to The Light Watkins Show as we encourage you to use today's episode as a guide for finding your center, pressing reset, and ensuring that your mind and heart are in the right place for you to be most useful and effective as a vocal activist against all wars. Ken Nwadike returns to the show to further explain why he decided to take it upon himself to be a pillar of calm in a world set on chaos. Ken founded the Free Hugs Project, a non-profit organization that centers on facilitating peace between two conflicting groups, and he goes into detail on how he enters conflict zones and how he approaches the leaders on either side.We discuss the importance of differentiating between various political groups and agendas, how Ken's activism has evolved in the past decade, the difficulty and nuance of navigating tribal narratives, and why most Americans are more concerned with and vocal about Gaza than they are about other wars around the world.Ken also walks us through why world peace starts with loving your family, how he overcomes criticism, how we can all rise above trivial online disputes, and why those who know more about the nuances of conflict should take charge in resolving them. If you're looking for a way for your voice to be heard, you've come to the right place.
A very special episode — with the Middle East on the brink and Israel about to escalate a war that will kill many more civilians and destabilize the region for decades - all with the blind support of many nations, Trish speaks with Aziz Abu Sarah. He is a respected Palestinian peace activist, and paints a picture of Gaza and its relationship with Israel that most people don't know. After losing his brother to the conflict — he pleads that rage and retribution are not the way. He also talks about the failure of media and the mistakes being made by protestors who are being insensitive following the Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians.
